At Mastercard’s AGM this morning, the far-left groups SumOfUs and Sleeping Giants circled the venue with a mobile billboard stating: “Putting hate groups out of business? #Priceless.”

According to a press release published by the two organizations, this was coupled with a speech from Sleeping Giants co-founder Nandini Jammi, “addressing the need for Mastercard to take swift action by cutting off its services to these hate groups.”

Over time, Sleeping Giants expanded its targets to encompass any conservative media with which its organizers politically disagree, including Fox News shows like Tucker Carlson Tonight , The Daily Caller, Dennis Prager, and the Daily Wire.

SumOfUs is purportedly a “human rights” activist group that now campaigns to make speech with which it politically disagrees unprofitable. Its website lists a number of powerful left-wing foundations among its partners, including George Soros’ Open Society Foundations, the Tides Foundation, the Media Democracy Fund, and the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation.

Earlier this year, SumOfUs presented a proposal to Mastercard’s shareholders , calling on the company to establish a “human rights committee” that would monitor payments to the “far right.” The protest aimed to pressure Mastercard to accept the proposal. Shareholders voted down the proposal this morning, despite the protest.

“Over the past few years, the rise of the far-right has wreaked havoc around the world, terrorizing and harming marginalized groups,” wrote SumOfUs in its press release.

Mastercard also pressured a payment processor to cut off service to conservative activist, think tank founder and author David Horowitz last year, but later the processor reinstated service following pressure from Breitbart News and other conservative media.

As left-wing political activist groups have pressured social media companies to blacklist their political rivals, they are also intent on destroying the ability of the political right to do business on the Internet. The rise of financial blacklisting has been a trend in recent years, with repeated instances online payment processors and funding platforms cutting off their services to right-wingers and conservatives.

Chase, one of America’s big four retail banks, has withdrawn service from a number of conservatives in recent weeks, amid a rise in financial blacklisting by payment processors and credit card companies.

Martina Markota, a video host for the conservative news website Rebel Media, reported on social media that Chase sent her a letter earlier this month stating that it would terminate service to her business, Magnum Opus Productions LLC, which is linked to her graphic novel, “Lady Alchemy.”

Last week, independent reporter, Army combat veteran and purple heart recipient Joe Biggs reported that Chase closed his account. Biggs told One America News that while the bank later agreed to resume services to him, it was only in the aftermath of social media backlash from the Trump-supporting veteran’s followers.

Earlier this month, Chase’s online payment processor withdrew service from 1776.shop , an online store run by Enrique Tarrio, the American of African and Cuban descent leader of the right-wing Proud Boys organization. Chase Banks subsequently sent Tarrio a letter informing him that they would shut down his personal account as well, giving him until the first of April to move his funds and automated payments to a different bank.

In addition to the bank’s withdrawal of service, Tarrio says he has also been banned from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Airbnb, and Firstdata, as well as from payment processors PayPal, Square, and Stripe.

These moves by Chase come amid a rise in politically motivated denials of service by credit cards, payment processors and online funding platforms.

In August, Mastercard and Discover blacklisted conservative and Islam critic Robert Spencer. In the same month, Visa and Mastercard ceased service to David Horowitz. While credit card processing service to Horowitz was eventually restored, Spencer remains financially blacklisted.

Online funding platform Patreon triggered a user boycott late last year when they withdrew service from the popular critic of progressivism Carl Benjamin, aka Sargon of Akkad. Numerous high-profile users of the platform including Sam Harris, Dave Rubin and Jordan Peterson quit the platform in protest. It later emerged that Patreon’s anticipation of credit card companies’ objections played a key role in its decision.

Many of the companies involved in the rise of financial blacklisting have faced a sustained campaign by left-wing agitators including the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and Color of Change urging them to withdraw service from conservatives and Trump supporters. The former was allegedly responsible for the blacklisting of Robert Spencer, while the latter claims to have removed 158 funding sources from “white supremacist sites” — although as the group didn’t publicly name the allegedly “white supremacist” sites. The far left typically smears regular Trump supporters with the label.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center stated in a recent email that its ability to accept donations by credit card has been disabled by both Visa and Mastercard following a campaign by the SPLC to label the Freedom Center as a hate group. This situation comes shortly after Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch was forced off the funding platform Patreon following pressure from Mastercard.

The Freedom Center is the next target of the SPLC, and they are using Mastercard and Visa again in their attempt to shut down conservative voices.

In the email to supporters, the Freedom Center lashed out at the move by Mastercard and Visa, saying: “this blow could be the end of the Freedom Center. Decades of work, down the drain because the hateful Left wants to squash free speech and silence an organization that dares to question them.

Breitbart News reached out to David Horowitz who provided the following comment:

We have been attacked by the left wing hate machine whose goal is to suppress and silence conservative voices. This is the work of a Soros funded Media Matters and Southern Poverty Law Center operation. It’s cynical, calculated and supported by the Democratic Party. The reason Mastercard and Visa gave us for cutting us off and thus sabotaging our online fund-raising operation is that the SPLC told them that we were a hate group. It is wrong to focus on the Tech heads as the culprits because as businessmen they have a vested interest in keeping their platforms politically neutral. They have been threatened by Senator Mark Warner and other Democrats if they don’t censor conservatives. The fact that Mastercard and Visa are now part of this juggernaut indicates how dangerous this has become.

In other words, Verizon wants to control your online experience and make the Internet more like cable TV, where your remote offers only the illusion of choice.

3. Verizon Wants to Sell Your Data to the NSA

Verizon has been working hand-in-glove with the NSA to monitor and collect the metadata of tens of millions of phone users. The surveillance taking place under a top-secret court order that Edward Snowden exposed in 2013 gives the NSA information on all telephone calls, both within the U.S. and between U.S. residents and those of other countries.

Companies like Verizon collect these bulk records and hand them to the federal government regardless of whether a phone user is suspected of any wrongdoing. Alongside AT&T and Sprint, Verizon receives hundreds of millions of dollars a year from the NSA in exchange for cooperating with this program.

4. Verizon Wants to Censor Text Messages

In 2007, Verizon Wireless blocked NARAL Pro-Choice America efforts to use its mobile text-message program to communicate with NARAL members. Initially Verizon told NARAL that it had banned the messages for being "controversial and unsavory." After the blocking was reported in the New York Times , the phone company backpedaled and lifted the ban. The text-message blocking was a simple glitch, a Verizon spokesman declared, and the company felt really, really bad about it.

5. Verizon Wants to Block Competing Apps

In 2011, Free Press and others caught Verizon Wireless blocking people from using tethering applications on their phones. Verizon had asked Google to remove 11 free tethering applications from the Android marketplace.

Big Tech is increasingly making it impossible for Republican politicians to communicate with their constituents. In addition to social media censorship, leftists are trying to censor at the level of emails, text messages, and telecommunications infrastructure.

The Republican party is getting quicker at responding to political bias from tech companies. After studies showing that 70 percent of GOP text messages go straight to spam folders compared to just eight percent of Democratic messages, Republicans have introduced the Political BIAS Emails Act . There are also a number of Republican bills targeting social media censorship, at both the federal and state level.

But leftists are already moving on to a new target: telecommunications infrastructure.

Telecom companies have already had an impact on national politics, with Verizon and AT&T briefly shutting down Trump’s campaign texts during the 2020 election, costing him millions of dollars. These conglomerates are vertically integrated, with the major companies also distributing Cable and Satellite TV. As with other concentrations of corporate power, the left hopes to use this to censor conservative viewpoints.

They specifically targeted Fox News, Newsmax, and the One America News Network. The letter concluded by asking asked what if they took “actions against a channel for using your platform to disseminate any disinformation” and “Are you planning to continue carrying Fox News, Newsmax, and OANN. . . both now and beyond any contract renewal date? If so, why?” The implied message was clear: if the distributors did not drop conservative networks, the Democrats would push for punitive regulation.

Instead of fighting back against this intimidation, many of the telecom giants played along with the Democrats’ false narrative. Verizon’s corporate website now includes “ A Guide to Misinformation ” which gives instructions on how its users can complain to tech companies to demand censorship. Since the Democrats’ letter, DirecTV has dropped One America News and some smaller cable distributors have dropped Newsmax.

The larger and woker a company gets, then the more likely it will blacklist based on ideology. Verizon is both one of the biggest and the wokest telecom companies. It gave $10 million to Black Lives Matter and made employees attend a particularly extreme corporate Critical Race Theory training , which Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) cited as the reason to pass the STOP WOKE Act in Florida.

It tried to create its own media brand, Oath (later Verizon Media), which invested in left-wing social media sites such as Tumblr, pro-censorship tech sites like TechCrunch, which has repeatedly advocated for more tech censorship ., and the far-left Huffington Post.

Under Verizon’s ownership, Huffington Post ran articles complaining of “disinformation” over text messages. Last year, Verizon sold Huffington Post to Buzzfeed, but it still is the minority owner of both publications as they call for deplatforming conservatives both from Cable. Verizon’s media business has since completely failed and sold Verizon Media to a private equity fund last year.

The groups are calling for a boycott of the digital payment system because it is collaborating with a group that lists several conservative Christian organizations as "hate groups" or "extremists" because of their religious views.

SPLC has targeted conservative groups like the Family Research Council and Alliance Defending Freedom, but also more recently it went after Maajid Nawaz, a liberal who was a former Islamic radical. The SPLC labeled him and others "anti- Muslim extremists" but later apologized and paid him $3.375 million to settle a lawsuit. Columnist Marc Thiessen said the SPLC "has become a caricature of itself, labeling virtually anyone who does not fall in line with its left-wing ideology an 'extremist' or 'hate group.'"

In 2010, SPLC placed the Family Research Council (FRC) a conservative Christian advocacy group that opposes abortion and same-sex marriage on its "hate map." Two years later, a gunman walked into the FRC headquarters with the intention to "kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-fil-A sandwiches in victims' faces." Ao que tudo indica, o bloqueio veio em resposta a campanha do perfil do Twitter SleepingGiants, que embora tenha chego faz poucos meses ao Brasil, já conseguiu apoio de dezenas de grandes empresas nacionais e multinacionais, além de celebridades e de toda a grande mídia. Sua campanha consiste em pedir a grandes empresas o boicote contra todas as iniciativas midiáticas e culturais desalinhadas ao discurso de esquerda.

Primeiro teve foco na interferência junto a anunciantes por mídia programática, pressionando-os a pedir a retirada de seus anúncios de sites de direita, ainda que as empresas comprem mídia do Google diretamente e não desses sites. As empresas colocam os sites conservadores numa “lista negras”, proibindo o Google direcionar anúncios. Com isso, a renda de sites de direita é reduzida. Mas agora o perfil de esquerda, SleepingGiants, quer derrubar as plataformas de pagamento usadas por pessoas de direita para vender produtos físicos e digitais, assinaturas e cursos. Nessa semana, o mesmo perfil de esquerda comemorou que a plataforma Apoia.se derrubou a conta do jornalista Bernardo P. Küster, que tinha recebia doações de dezenas de pessoa pela plataforma. Semanas atrás, esquerdistas comemoravam que a maior plataforma de cursos no Brasil, a Hotmart, informou que irá censurar conteúdos fora dos padrões e políticas da empresa, incluindo temas sensíveis e polêmicos politicamente.

O movimento escancara o alinhamento das maiores elites mundiais do capitalismo aos objetivos da esquerda. É “o capitalismo a serviço da esquerda” numa caçada contra a direita. Contrariando todas as narrativas marxistas que diziam que a direita representava o capitalismo e vice-versa, agora a esquerda mostra que ela “controla o capitalismo”. O problema do “grande capital” parece resolvido para a esquerda, pois os magnatas são de esquerda e os pequenos esquerdistas os servem e sentem-se servidos pelo “grande capital”.

O boicote e as ações de censura digital chegaram em níveis nunca antes vistos, com as maiores empresas do mundo colocando todos os seus esforços em calar vozes dissonantes do discurso e opiniões de esquerda.

Enquanto toda sociedade dependia da televisão e do rádio e essas eram propriedade de poucos grupos de magnatas, as opiniões circulantes reforçavam as teses progressistas. Agora com a internet, está sendo necessário calar as vozes conservadoras e para isso, gigantes como Google, FacebookInstagramWhatsApp, Twitter, Paypal e centenas de multinacionais aderem a campanha liderada por um perfil esquerdista anônimo que faz o mapeamento de quem deve ser boicotado primeiro.

Justificam sua campanha dizendo combater discurso de ódio e fake news, contudo, 1) não conseguem apontar o que é fake news, não há objeto caracterizado no suposto delito, que sequer existe tifipicado em lei, além disso, 2) não conseguem afastar de si o mesmos o “mesmo delito”, já que sobram exemplos de fake news que grandes veículos e grandes influenciadores de esquerda publicam e reverberam. Todavia, os que são de esquerda, não sofrem qualquer censura dessas elites que dominam o mundo.

Diante desse cenário, jamais a esquerda poderá dizer-se novamente a favor da liberdade e muito menos dizer que combatem o capitalismo, pois o monstro que a esquerda dizia que era o capitalismo é, na verdade, ainda mais perverso do que diziam, porém, esse monstro capitalista hoje é a própria esquerda.

Commentary: Don’t Erase the DA from the Colorado Truck Crash Story

Back in September, I wrote about how criminal justice reformers should look to make decarceration efforts more palpable to racial and ethnic communities that are historically less interested in the criminal legal system: namely, Latinx and AAPI communities. A recent case in Colorado against a young Cuban-American man, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, has been decried as a travesty in Latinx media outlets like We Are Mitú and by popular Miami radio host Enrique Santos, representing an opportunity to change the narrative.

The situation that resulted in a de facto life sentence of 110 years in prison for Aguilera-Mederos is a classic example of prosecutors abusing the law because they — and perhaps their constituents — cannot endure the idea that a horrible tragedy can occur without somebody, even a factually innocent person, being held accountable in criminal court.

In short, Aguilera-Mederos was driving a large truck when his brakes failed on the interstate; four people ended up dead and many others were injured.

Deputy DA Kayla Wildeman argued the case, and essentially claimed that that Aguilera-Mederos was either negligent — stating “the defendant didn’t catch [the brake malfunction] like he was supposed to” — or perhaps reckless — claiming he might have “drove on his brakes the entire way and caused them to be that way,” and that he could have taken an off-ramp but thought he did not need to.

The reason for the extremely harsh sentence was that Colorado law mandates consecutive sentencing for certain “crimes of violence,” mixed with the fact that Aguilera-Mederos was charged with many assault in the first degree counts. Ironically, assault in the first degree counts as a violent crime, but vehicular manslaughter, where a person actually dies, does not.

From a legal standpoint, the case for the first-degree assault charges seems weak. The charge requires either specific intent to cause serious bodily injury, or, in the alternative, “extreme indifference to the value of human life” and knowingly engaging in conduct that “creates a grave risk of death to another person.” There is no way a prosecutor should have been able to successfully argue the first theory in this case, and even the second theory is dubious given the facts.

It is good that Deputy DA Kayla Wildeman is named in the press: her actions in this case show the kind of person she is. Yet anyone who knows how criminal prosecution works should be aware that a line prosecutor is mostly a cog. Similar to the military, there is a chain of command when it comes to making charging decisions, and the buck stops with the elected DA. Even if the DA did not personally touch the truck case — which is doubtful, since it’s the most high profile case out of the jurisdiction in years — that individual still has command responsibility.

So who is the Jefferson County DA? Her name is Alexis King. King rose to her position as a deputy DA to former DA Pete Weir, a locally well-liked Republican who spent eight years in the role. George Soros famously bankrolled Weir’s Democratic opponent, Jeff Lilly, in the 2016 DA race, and it was one of the few races that year where a Soros-backed DA candidate failed at the ballot box.

Weir, who originally charged this case before DA King took charge of the case, could not run again because of Colorado’s term limits law for DAs.

Soros’s decision to get involved in Jefferson County in 2016 received a substantial amount of backlash from the local legal community at the time. Lawyers as prominent as Bill Ritter, Jr., a former Denver DA and Colorado Governor who ran as a Democrat, did not believe that Weir had ethical issues or was unduly harsh, factors that seemed to have played into Soros’s decision to get involved in DA elections elsewhere.

Weir’s recent record was not as dramatic as some of the other DAs targeted by Soros that year, such as Devon Anderson, the Houston prosecutor who jailed a rape victim to force her to testify against her own rapist. But the vast majority of a DA’s unfortunate acts do not rise to the level of newsworthy status, at least according to legacy newspapers.

Yet, digging deeper, there were many principled reasons for reformers to oppose Weir. On policy matters, Weir fearmongered about Colorado cannabis legalization for adults causing pot use amongst kids to skyrocket; fought proposals to curb mandatory minimum sentencing; and used his authority to preserve death-in-prison sentences for kids. And while prosecutors are not authorized to lie in undercover law enforcement investigations, Weir and his prosecutors did so in order to help police conduct “To Catch a Predator”-style stings. After the public found out former Centre County (Pennsylvania) DA Stacey Parks Miller exhibited similar behavior, she had her law license suspended for over a year.

DA King is not a clone of Pete Weir, at least not nominally speaking. She is currently registered as a Democrat, though she donated twice in 2016 to Weir. She received some moderately pro-reform endorsements, such as one from Denver DA Beth McCann. King also stated after Aguilera-Mederos was sentenced that she would “welcome” a reconsideration of the prison term.

But let’s be honest. It is much easier to avert a needlessly harsh sentence than to undo it once it is done. The legal system places a high value on finality, which causes presumptions against defendants when they seek to undo injustices done to them in specific cases. DA King had the opportunity to offer a reasonable plea bargain, or simply drop and refile truly appropriate charges that balanced the community’s desire for accountability with a realistic accounting of Aguilera-Mederos’ culpability. She did not. This is the kind of cowardice that destroys lives.

If DA King is truly serious about fixing this injustice, she should do it herself. That is what the aforementioned Denver DA McCann, who endorsed King in 2020, did in the case of Marion Jetton. Jetton received a whopping 96 years in prison in a Denver court for $8,800 in bad checks, a sentence that was mostly the result of the state’s harsh repeat offender laws. McCann reopened the case, and renegotiated a plea so Jetton would be parole eligible after the 13 years he had already served. No drawn-out appeals or fruitless groveling to a governor for clemency needed.
