Since the early days of British involvement with Zionism, Churchill sanctioned the dispossession of non-Jewish Palestinians by assuring that they have no voice in the affairs of their own land. “In the interests of the Zionist policy,” he stated in August 1921 as the government minister in charge of Britain’s colonies, “all elective institutions have so far been refused to the Arabs.”
A snapshot of Churchill’s stances on Palestine and race is found in the records of the 1937 Peel Commission hearings, convened to address a major revolt in Palestine. [...]
Horace Rumbold [...] asked whether Zionist policy is worth “the lives of our men, and so on.” And did it follow, he asked Churchill, that having “conquered Palestine we can dispose of it as we like?”
Churchill replied to that and similar questions by invoking commitments given when Britain captured Palestine toward the end of 1917. “We decided in the process of conquest of [Palestine] to make certain pledges to the Jews,” Churchill said.
Apparently skeptical, the head of the commission, William Peel, asked Churchill if it is not “a very odd self-government” when “it is only when the Jews are a majority that we can have it.”
Churchill responded with a blunt argument of might: “We have every right to strike hard in support of our authority.”
The historian Reginald Coupland nonetheless told the hearings that the “average Englishman” would wonder why the Arabs were being denied self-government, and why we had “to go on shooting the Arabs down because of keeping his promise to the Jews.”
Peel, similarly, asked Churchill if the British public “might get rather tired and rather inquisitive if every two or three years there was a sort of campaign against the Arabs and we sent out troops and shot them down? They would begin to enquire, ‘Why is it done? What is the fault of these people?… Why are you doing it? In order to get a home for the Jews?’”
“And it would mean rather brutal methods,” added Laurie Hammond, who had worked with the British colonial administration in India. “I do not say the methods of the Italians at Addis Ababa,” referring to Benito Mussolini’s Ethiopian massacre of February 1937, “but it would mean the blowing up of villages and that sort of thing?” The British, he recalled, had blown up part of the Palestinian port city of Jaffa.
Peel agreed, and added that “they blew up a lot of [Palestinian] houses all over the place in order to awe the population. I have seen photographs of these things going up in the air.”
But when Peel questioned whether “it is not only a question of being strong enough,” but of “downing” the Arabs who simply wanted to remain in their own country, Churchill lost patience.
“I do not admit that the dog in the manger has the final right to the manger,” he countered, “even though he may have lain there for a very long time.” He denied that “a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the Black people of Australia,” by their replacement with “a higher grade race.”
#churchill explicitly compared what was being done to palestinians as equivalent to what was done to indigenous populations in aus and us#heard it on the podcast episode and looked it up#zionism#palestine

when the Empire's researchers realized that the cause of the ecological devastation was the Empire:
much to consider.
on the motives and origins of some forms of imperial "environmentalism".
---
Since the material resources of colonies were vital to the metropolitan centers of empire, some of the earliest conservation practices were established outside of Europe [but established for the purpose of protecting the natural resources desired by metropolitan Europe]. [...] [T]ropical island colonies were crucial laboratories of empire, as garden incubators for the transplantation of peoples [slaves, laborers] and plants [cash crops] and for generating the European revival of Edenic discourse. Eighteenth-century environmentalism derived from colonial island contexts in which limited space and an ideological model of utopia contributed to new models of conservation [...]. [T]ropical island colonies were at the vanguard of establishing forest reserves and environmental legislation [...]. These forest reserves, like those established in New England and South Africa, did not necessarily represent "an atavistic interest in preserving the 'natural' [...]" but rather a "more manipulative and power-conscious interest in constructing a new landscape by planting trees [in monoculture or otherwise modified plantations] [...]."

---
British colonial forestry was arguably one of the most extensive imperial frameworks of scientific natural resource management anywhere [...]. [T]he roots of conservation [...] lay in the role played by scientific communities in the colonial periphery [...]. In India, [...] in 1805 [...] the court of directors of the East India Company sent a dispatch enquiring [...] [about] the Royal Navy [and its potential use of wood from Malabar's forests] [...]. This enquiry led to the appointment of a forest committee which reported that extensive deforestation had taken place and recommended the protection of the Malabar forests on grounds that they were valuable property. [...] [T]o step up the extraction of teak to augment the strength of the Royal Navy [...] [b]etween 1806 and 1823, the forests of Malabar were protected by means of this monopoly [...]. The history of British colonial forestry, however, took a decisive turn in the post-1860 period [...]. Following the revolt of 1857, the government of India sought to pursue active interventionist policies [...]. Experts were deployed as 'scientific soldiers' and new agencies established. [...] The paradigm [...] was articulated explicitly in the first conference [Empire Forestry Conference] by R.S. Troup, a former Indian forest service officer and then the professor of forestry at Oxford. Troup began by sketching a linear model of the development of human relationship with forests, arguing that the human-forest interaction in civilized societies usually went through three distinct phases - destruction, conservation, and economic management. Conservation was a ‘wise and necessary measure’ but it was ‘only a stage towards the problem of how best to utilise the forest resources of the empire’. The ultimate ideal was economic management, [...] to exploit 'to the full [...]' and provide regular supplies [...] to industry.

It is no accident that the earliest writers to comment specifically on rapid environmental change in the context of empires were scientists who were themselves often actors in the process of colonially stimulated environmental change. [...] [N]atural philosophers [...] in Bermuda, [...] in Barbados and [...] on St Helena [all British colonies] were all already well aware of characteristically high rates of soil erosion and deforestation in the colonial tropics [...]. On St Helena and Bermuda this early conservationism led, by 1715, to the gazetting of the first colonial forest reserves and forest protection laws. On French colonial Mauritius [...], Poivre and Philibert Commerson framed pioneering forest conservation [...] in the 1760s. In India William Roxburgh [and] Edward Balfour [...] ([...] Scottish medical scientists) wrote alarmist narratives relating [to] deforestation [...]. East India Company scientists [...] [including] Roxburgh [...] went on to further observe the incidence of global drought events [...]. The writings of Edward Balfour and Hugh Cleghorn in the late 1840s in particular illustrate the extent of the permeation of a global environmental consciousness [...]. [T]he 1860s [were] a period [...] which embodies a convergence of thinking about ecological change on a world scale [...]. It was in the particular circumstances of environmental change at the colonial periphery that what we would now term "environmentalism" first made itself felt [...]. Victorian texts such as [...] Ribbentrop's Forestry in the British Empire, Brown's Hydrology of South Africa, Cleghorn's Forests and Gardens of South India [...] were [...] vital to the onset of environmentalism [...]. This fear grew steadily in the wake of colonial expansion [...] particularly [...] after the great Indian famines of 1876 [...].

---
The “planetary consciousness” produced by this systemizing of nature [in eighteenth-century European science] […] increased the mobility of paradise discourse [...]. As European colonial expansion accelerated, the homogenizing transformation of people, economy and nature which it catalyzed also gave rise to a myth of lost paradise, which served as a register […] for obliterated cultures, peoples, and environments [devastated by that same European colonization], and as a measure of the rapid ecological changes, frequently deforestation and desiccation, generated by colonizing capital. On one hand, this myth served to suppress dissent by submerging it in melancholy, but on the other, it promoted the emergence of an imperialist environmental critique which would motivate the later establishment of colonial botanical gardens, potential Edens in which nature could be re-made. However, the subversive potential of the “green” critique voiced through the myth of endangered paradise was defused by the extent to which growing environmental sensibilities enabled imperialism to function more efficiently by appropriating botanical knowledge and indigenous conservation methods, thus continuing to serve the purposes of European capital.

The Sign of Four: The Strange Story of Jonathan Small (Part Two of Two)
CW for graphic discussion of war crimes.
Sepoy was a term, derived from the Persian sepāhī meaning "infantry soldier", that was used to refer to Indian soldiers, generally with muskets, in the Mughal Empire's armed forces and also Maratha Army. Europeans then used the term to refer to Indians in their colonial forces. One of the names of the rebellion was the Sepoy Mutiny.
Today, Sepoy is the equivalent of "Private" in the Indian and Pakistani armies.
Cawnpore, now Kanpur, was the scene of a siege of East India Company forces and associated civilians in 1857. The EIC surrendered in return for safe passage offered by Nana Sahib, leader of the rebellion on the area. Then, for unclear reason, the departing men, women and children were attacked - no definitive evidence that Sahib authorised this has been found. All the men were killed, with the surviving women and children taken to a villa called Bibighar. 22 days later, although some sepoys refused the order, they were nearly all massacred, with their naked bodies thrown down a well. The British arrived the next day to recapture the city and then carried out horrific summary justice against any rebels who could not prove their innocence. Space precludes me from covering it in depth.
Historically, treason, like the rajah has basically done, would result in Parliament passing an act of attainder, basically seizing your entire personal property plust titles without any judicial process. Not sure what the East India Company's rules were on that. The US constitution specifically bans Congress and the states from passing any bills of attainder.
I'd need to enquire about this, but EIC sepoys apparently swore loyalty to the salt they had eaten, hence the term "true to their salt".
A postern is a side entrance in a city or castle wall, usually concealed so it can be used for stealthy entrances and exits; it could also be used during a siege for the defenders to make an attack on their besiegers. The foundations of one from the London Wall can be seen next to the Tower of London.
A firelock is a musket where the powder is ignited by sparks, either from a lit match or friction from a piece of flint.
The wet season in India lasts from around June to September, when 80% of the annual rainfall occurs. This is vital for Indian agriculture and delays in it occuring can cause real problems. In any event, you get near-daily thunderstorms and torrential downpours. This can result in roads getting badly damaged and flooding in places with poor drainage. Bollywood is a particular fan of romantic scenes involving monsoons, because they allow for sexy wet people.
I believe a mound-heap is another term for midden, an outside dump for all sorts of domestic waste, ranging from broken pottery to animal bones to human waste. Archaelogists are particular fans of them as they provide evidence of past human habitation of a sight. Poor people in Victorian London would search through them for any items of value.
The British last executed someone by firing squad in 1941 when Josef Jakobs, a German NCO convicted of spying was shot at the Tower of London. Two American soldiers would be shot at Shepton Mallet in 1944 for murdering fellow soldiers.
Before the introduction of compulsory recording of police interviews in 1992, records of interviews were generally made from notes taken during the interview or even the officers' memory, with associated problems. The interviewee would then be asked to sign the official record, something frequently refused, especially if it looked like they were signing a confession. It was also pretty common for police to engage in "verballing" i.e. falsifying the record to make it appear there had been a confession.
"The first water" means the diamonds were of the highest quality, basically having the appearence of clear water.
Commutations of death sentences were in fact quite common, especially for lower-level offences. If you see "death recorded" in a trial transcript, it means that the judge had to pass the death sentence, but clearly intended for there to be a pardon or commutation. This often occurred for sodomy convictions.
Mount Harriet is a 383-metre high hill today called Mount Manipur.
A military officer who went bankrupt, especially for gambling debts, was going to lose his commission at best. Bankruptcy is still going to be a real concern in any armed forces today, especially for your security clearance.
It is around 375 miles as the metaphorical crow flies (crows are not sea birds) to Myanmar, then Burma and a British colony. The only place you could reasonably reach from Port Blair that was not under some form of British control was Siam (now Thailand), which remained independent throughout the imperial era, except when Japan invaded it in 1941.
Yawl has several definitions, including a sail layout commonly used for racing yachts in this period.
The belief that the Andaman indigenous people were cannibals appears to have come from the account of Marco Polo.
Hundreds of people tried to escape from the Andaman penal colony, including 288 of the initial 1858 arrivals, a third of those who survived the original journey. However, the thick jungle and "the murderous attacks of the savage aborigines", as military doctor and original governor James Pattison Walker put, led to 81 survivors limping back to Port Blair. They asked for mercy and medicine. Walker had them and seven other recaptured prisoners all hanged the same day. Many who got off the island likely drowned.
Two prisoners in 1872 managed to get all the way to London, after convincing a British vessel they were shipwrecked fishermen. However, the manager of the Strangers Home for Asiatics in London where they ended up got suspicious, took photographs of them and sent them around the empire. That led to their recapture.
The calabash fruit, also known as the gourd, can be turned into bowls or other containers. Gourd is also a slang term for "mind".
The pilgrims sailing from Singapore to Jiddah (or more usually Jeddah) would likely have been heading for Mecca to take part in the hajj. This a pilgrimage considered one of the five pillars of Islam and mandatory at least once in a lifetime for any Muslim with the physical and financial ability to do it. Modern travel has made this a lot less hazardous - past pilgrims faced dangers including piracy, with even some of the Caribbean pirates sailing around Africa to attack ships for the treasures that might be going with them. At least until they reach Mecca, when everyone dresses in the same simple clothing.
At the time of this story, Jeddah, Mecca and Medina were in the Vilayet of the Hejaz, a province of the Ottoman Empire.
The 1445/2024 Hajj, ongoing as I post this, has attracted 1.833 million pilgrims. These numbers have caused stampedes and spread of disease; this year has also seen deaths due to heat stroke in 48 degrees Celsius temperatures. The Saudi authorities have taken various measures to improve safety, including registration requirements and improvements to the site layout provide escape routes.
From Jeddah (and other places in the region), pilgrims would historically travel to Mecca in large camel caravans with military escort as protection against bandit attacks. Today, Jeddah is home to the biggest airport in Saudi Arabia with a dedicated and distinctive terminal for the pilgrimage, as the vast majority of pilgrims arrive via air today. From there, modern roads and a new high-speed railway provide easy access to the holy sites.
Performing in "freak shows" was one of the few ways that severely disabled people could earn a living in these period - it was often that, begging or the workhouse; Joseph Merrick could not hold down any other employment because of his appearance. People with microcephaly i.e. a smaller than usual head were passed off as "missing links". However, by 1888, public opinion was turning against such acts.

A Christmas Carol Aftermath: Work to Be Done
NOTE: I had a lot of trouble balancing the Victorian language with modern understanding of disability and cultural/religious differences. I wanted to use wording that fit with the Dickensian storytelling, without carrying into it Dickens' period-typical prejudices (which he most definitely had) or using words that had different connotations in the 19th century. If you belong to any of the groups mentioned and find my wording offensive, please let me know so I can try to fix it!
Also, I understand there are potential underlying issues with inserting Muslim and Jewish characters into a Christmas-themed story, especially as background characters. I want to be clear that the message isn't that Christianity is all-encompassing of other belief systems, but instead that all the belief systems of the world are parts of a greater whole. I hope I managed to convey that.
...
Ebenezer Scrooge looked around, wide-eyed, as they entered the massive room. Jacob had called it “The Counting-House,” but it looked more like a library, only many times larger than any library he had ever seen. St. Paul’s and ’Change would have both fit many times beneath the soaring vaulted ceiling, which reached so high that looking up at it was dizzying. He expected if he’d still had a mortal body, he might have passed out merely trying to comprehend the immensity of the space. Uncountable high shelves divided this area into corridors, and tall rolling ladders and a system of winding bronze stairs and walkways allowed workers to access the higher levels. The shelves were filled with books, which Scrooge immediately recognized as ledgers, each one bound in leather and embossed with a different name on the spine. Some of the names were common enough, and he even thought he spotted one or two names of people he’d known personally, but others seemed strange and unpronounceable to him, and others still were printed in complex, swooping calligraphy that was utterly foreign. Ebenezer, who had an eye for such things, quickly realized that while neatly organized, the ledgers were not alphabetical; he couldn’t find any rhyme or reason to the filing system as Jacob led him past the shelves, but at the same time, it was clear there was a precise order. But to Ebenezer, the most interesting part of all was the workers. After living in London, where so many kinds of people lived shoulder-to-shoulder — rich and poor, young and old, healthy bodies and those twisted by nature or accident — he’d thought he was familiar with the variety of mankind, but now he saw how limited that view had been. They passed a woman whose entire form was covered by a long veil, only her dark eyes visible, chatting animatedly with a young woman whose dress would have been in fashion perhaps five hundred years ago. A man in a costume he associated with the ancient Orient stood beside a dark-haired woman on a ladder as she handed books down to him. Ebenezer saw a silver six-pointed star glinting on a chain around the woman’s neck. A little boy, surely no older than seven, ran barefoot past him carrying a stack of ledgers. The boy reminded Eb of Tim, back when he’d first met him, though this child had the brown skin and fantastic garb of far India. As they walked along, many they passed greeted Jacob with familiarity and obvious pleasure. A young man called out cheerfully from several rows over, and Jacob returned his greeting with a wave and a grin. Several times, they stopped for Jacob to converse: he asked how so-and-so was getting on with such-and-such, laughed at some shared joke, offered advice or a sympathetic ear. It reminded Scrooge of his walks to and from the countinghouse. Once, he had hurried along, warding off any attempt at conversation with a growl; but in the final stretch of his mortal life, he had stopped every few steps to enquire after someone’s health, drop a few coins in a blindman’s tin, pet a dog or cat, or have a snowball fight with some neighborhood children. He had found his life infinitely enriched by these small interactions, and was gladdened to see that on the other side of the veil, Jacob had also discovered this joy. At the very heart of the hustle and bustle sat an old man, shaped rather like an overstuffed armchair, with a face like a bulldog. A flurry of papers was spread haphazardly over his desk, and he hunched over to read them so that his nose nearly touched the worn wooden surface. Every so often, someone would approach him and he’d listen thoughtfully, sometimes nodding, other times furrowing his brow and frowning, occasionally scribbling a signature on this form or that. He had an ink stain on one cheek, and his hair was untidy and frazzled, but when he looked up to greet them, the eyes behind his spectacles were bright and sharp. “Jacob!” he boomed in a voice that reminded Scrooge of Fezziwig, his genial old employer back in his ’prentice days. Jacob offered his hand, and the old man shook it warmly. “Returned from your holiday, I see! Well, we’re very glad to have you back; always so much to do, as you well know, and your talent was much missed!” Those sharp eyes turned to Scrooge, and he had the peculiar sensation that the bulldoggish old man was looking through him, taking in his whole history in a glance. It made him feel naked and vulnerable, the way he had felt that long-ago night with the Spirits. Then the old man smiled, seeming to approve, and turned his gaze back to Jacob. “Have you brought us a new recruit?” “I hope so,” Jacob said, with a wide grin. “This is Ebenezer Scrooge.” Scrooge stepped forward, politely but nervously. “Mr Scrooge! I’ve heard so much about you, and I’m delighted to finally make your acquaintance! I am — well, you may call me the Record Keeper. Has Jacob told you a little about what we do here?” Ebenezer nodded, feeling unsure. He hadn’t interviewed for a position for a very long time indeed, and whatever else this was, it was a job of sorts, that much seemed clear. “Yes. As I understand from Jacob — Mr Marley — you are in the business of, well, keeping records of mortal lives; balancing the cosmic books, in a manner of speaking.” The little old man gave him another piercing glance, and Eb thought his eyes seemed cooler now. This made him even more anxious. “Yes,” the little man said, “but that’s not all there is to it, as I’m sure Jacob has explained —” “Yes, he did,” Eb hurried to agree, worried now that perhaps whatever misstep he seemed to have made could have consequences for his husband. “He was very clear on that. You also, well… you help people settle their debts. As you did for me.” This last was very quiet. “Yes.” The old man nodded. “Though mortals aren’t often as… aware of our agents as you were. Most times, we simply influence, planting small suggestions, pointing the right direction. They don’t even know we’re there. There are many different departments, but this specific department is, not to put too fine a point on it, for people like you two were.” “Hardheaded fools hellbent on digging their own graves, in other words,” Jacob put in, amused. Ebenezer shot him a slightly annoyed glance, feeling he was taking this whole thing too lightly. “So… redemption,” Scrooge said thoughtfully. “In essence, my dear sir,” said the Record Keeper. “Now, I suppose I’ll turn the floor over to you.” He sat back expectantly, waiting for Scrooge to say something. This took Ebenezer rather by surprise. He cleared his throat nervously. He knew he couldn’t actually be thirsty — the dead don’t need to eat or drink — but his mouth felt dry somehow anyway. “Well, er…” He was already off to a bad start. He gathered his thoughts and tried again. “I think I would be useful to your organization because I understand how the people you work with think. I understand the logic, flawed though it is. I also have experience working in a mortal establishment which bears some similarities to your business structure, and. Well. I mean…” His words trailed off. The Record Keeper was looking at him with a politely blank stare, not cold, but certainly not warm either. He seemed ready to get back to his papers. Ebenezer didn’t know what he’d done wrong, but he was suddenly quite sure that the interview was over. He moistened his lips. “Well, thank you for your consideration —” he began, but Jacob stopped him. “Would you please give us a moment?” Jacob asked the Record Keeper, and the old man nodded and returned to the forms on his desk. Jacob drew Eb aside. “Ebenezer… I understand what you’re thinking, but this… it isn’t like any form of employment you would be familiar with.” “So what should I say? What does he want me to say?” “I can’t tell you that,” Jacob said mildly. “But if I could make a suggestion, I’d try telling him what you told me about being useful. He knows your background, the best and the worst of it; he knows your talents and how they could prove useful. Your motives are what’s important here.” “Wouldn’t he know my motives already, too?” Jacob smiled. “Yes, probably. But what I think matters is that you tell him, and how you tell him.” Ebenezer took a deep breath — he no longer needed to breathe any more than he needed food or drink, but it helped steady him — and once again approached the desk. Jacob hung back slightly, but Eb felt his husband’s gaze on him, and that gave him courage. “Excuse me, sir?” The Record Keeper looked up, his face still blank and noncommittal. Eb closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his thoughts, then opened them and spoke slowly. His voice was unsure and lacked the formality he’d used earlier. “I want, desperately actually, to help. Much of my life, I would have said that there was nothing I could truly do for anyone else, even if I’d wanted to. That I could toss coins to beggars and feed the poor all day long, but there would still be a hundred more needy ready to take their place. But Jacob helped me realize that there is so much that I — that anyone — can do to make the mortal world better.” He paused. “Maybe our world too, actually. There’s so much I don’t know, but I would like to learn, if you would have me.” He gave a small, uncomfortable chuckle. “I’m afraid I’m not very good with words — that was always more Jacob’s talent — but please believe me when I say, I want this more than I can express.” The Record Keeper was looking at him with increased interest and attention now. “Why?” “Why?” Eb echoed, honestly confused. “Yes, why do you want it so much? Are you hoping to earn your own redemption by helping others to theirs? Balance the scales more in your favour? Because as you already know, the chains were only part of it.” With dawning comprehension, Ebenezer said thoughtfully, “The evils I did, I can never undo. Doing good works won’t change that, not for those I hurt.” The Record Keeper listened, seemingly waiting for more. Ebenezer searched for the words and found them: “Simply put, I want to help because it feels good to help.” The Record Keeper’s crinkled face burst into a wide smile. “Ebenezer! There you are!” Eb found his hand engulphed by both the old man’s own and pumped enthusiastically. “You had me worried for a moment, my dear sir, but you found your answer.” Scrooge, shocked at this sudden turn of events, gaped. He could barely believe it. “Are you saying…?” “The position is yours, dear boy! Jacob, you’ll show him the ropes, I trust?” Before Jacob could answer, Ebenezer had all but tackled him in an embrace. After a moment, he released him, looking sheepish. “I’m… I’m sorry,” he told the Record Keeper. “It won’t be repeated —” and then Jacob’s lips were on his own, kissing him deeply. “Jacob!” he said breathlessly, scandalized, when his mouth was free again, but he saw the Record Keeper was beaming. “My dear Ebenezer, your Jacob knows our business is, at bottom, the business of love. Expressions of it will never be inappropriate or out of place here… up to a point, Mr Marley!” he added with feigned sternness in response to Jacob’s slightly wicked smile. Jacob laughed heartily. Ebenezer looked between them for a moment, uncomprehending, and then a hot flush spread over his cheeks. Jacob saw it and kissed him again, more gently this time, caressing his face briefly, tenderly. “All right, all right, back to work!” The Record Keeper clapped his hands briskly. “That means everyone!” he added, and Scrooge noticed that they had attracted a small and amiable audience. As the Record Keeper turned back to his piles of papers, Eb’s hand was shaken over and over as he was introduced to his new coworkers. There was, as Jacob had told him, as the Record Keeper had echoed, and as he himself knew, so much work to be done, and he was eager to begin, with his partner and these new friends at his side.

SPECIAL NOTE: This is the first installment since @wolfenm's passing this past February. Their "Conspiracy of Spirits" was what first got me into this ship, which is now my ultimate OTP. Wolfie was a talented writer, a wonderful person, and a very dear friend, and they are very much missed. Hail the traveler!
Also in this series: “A Joyful Reunion” “Fan” Marley’s Grave Tim
DISCLAIMER: A Christmas Carol is a public domain work. However, these vignettes were also inspired by several other works, including “A Conspiracy of Spirits: The Love Story of Jacob Marley and Ebenezer Scrooge” in The Solstice Tales by @wolfenm, Jacob T. Marley by R. William Bennet, and Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol by Tom Mula. All these works belong to their respective owners, not to me.
AUTHOR’S NOTES: This installment took most of its inspiration from Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol, especially with the inclusion of the Record Keeper.
A quick shout-out to the new movie Spirited for pushing me into writing this! Funnily enough, I had only seen the first 20 minutes when I wrote this, and was amazed to see how much of it lined up with the film's messages when I finished the movie. It's almost uncanny.

Meddling Violet au: Can we get more insight of Anthony plotting to single-handed destroy every ship in England and after realizing it’s impossible go full madman to marry Kate?
Failing to convince Mary and the Bagwells to stay in Britain, Anthony tries to come up with alternate solutions to keep Kate and her family from leaving the country.
At first he thinks he could frame Bagwell for treason and have the man imprisoned, though on second thoughts he's pretty sure Kate would never forgive him for having an innocent man jailed.
Then he reckons if he set Mary up with some wealthy nobleman that she would stay put and so would her daughters. However Mary Sharma is very much not impressed with the amount of older gentlemen who keep sidling up to her at balls and enquiring if she's interested in remarrying, much to Anthony's growing vexation as he watches on from the other side of the ballroom behind a pillar.
He even pulls Mr. Bagwell aside at the gentlemen's club and privately asks if he's in any financial straits, thinking that might be the reason why the family are planning to leave the country. However much to Anthony's frustration money isn't an issue at all as Bagwell explains that his wife and mother-in-law simply miss residing in India.
At this point Anthony is at the end of his tether, losing his grip on rational thinking and thus starts genuinely thinking through the logistics of destroying every single ship in Britain in order to prevent Kate and her family from ever leaving. He gets so invested in his deranged scheme that he actually seeks out Simon to go over and verify the numbers for him. Simon just stares at him in utter disbelief, having initially believed Anthony was having a joke and then becoming incredibly concerned by the mad glint in his brother-in-law's eye.
"Anthony." Simon exhales, pinching the top of his nose in despair. "Wouldn't the easier solution simply be to marry Miss Sharma? Instead of, you know; single-handedly destroying every last boat and firing cannonballs at any incoming ships???"
At which point the fog of insanity clouding Anthony's mind clears, realising that marrying Kate is in fact the easiest method to keep her from leaving and right away runs all the way over to the Bagwell residence, barging in and dropping to one knee in the middle of the ladies tea, and asking Kate to marry him as he shoves the ring on her finger much to her astonishment.

... when you are enquiring into confusion which means disorder, how does disorder come about in every human being? Disorder implies contradiction, firstly. Right? Disorder implies, saying one thing and doing another in which there is no integrity, no honesty. Disorder implies the incapacity to see clearly, and when you see clearly there is no choice. So choice exists when there is confusion. I wonder if you accept all this. It is only a man that is confused who says, 'I am going to choose'. When the thing is very clear, there is no choice, you just do according to that clarity. But if you notice, our existence is based on choice and the pursuit of will. Will is the very essence of choice. I wonder if you follow all this?

@greyhoundai op of that post has me blocked lol so here:
it’s as simple as googling “Naxal civilian deaths” and then knowing bare minimum stuff about the way the Indian government works. Indians are afforded the fundamental right to information (RTI), which allows us to file inquiries to access government records. records on naxal death tolls are kept by the ministry of home affairs. simple google search leads you to articles about civilian deaths at the hands of Naxals which often state the name of the RTI activist who filed the request.
Here is just one pdf of a an RTI filing and the government’s response. You can find any of these by googling [person filling the report’s name] [inquiry] “mha” Other such enquirers also looked at demographics, and most civilians killed are usually people from scheduled tribes who are painted as “police informants”.
“I don’t believe the ministry of home affairs because it’s propaganda!” I don’t fucking know what to tell you like no other body is going to have access to this information at this scale. Yes, Naxals are used to gain political power, but the main reason that they are a talking point is because people in the red corridor fear for their lives and want safety.
People can imply all they want that I’m just a poor third worlder who hasn’t been deprogrammed :(( because I’m apparently “taking propaganda at face value” or whatever to which I say my opinion on Naxalism comes from personal experience alongside all the very obvious violations they commit. I’ve had family live in the red corridor and have their lives and livelihood threatened.
Naxals are also known for using the threat of violence to coerce civilians into joining their cause. Their actions cause direct harm to northeast India.
And it’s honestly really fucking western to assume that Indian bodies work the same as western ones. You cannot draw a one to one comparison from the Indian military to the American one, or the government, or just the way a system ought to run. We are a very young country ravaged by a lot of very complex geopolitical issues that I do not think westerners should feel comfortable weighing in on so confidently. I don’t think they understand partition, british raj, emergency, opening the markets, bangladesh, kashmir, naxalites, or any of the other very intense context required to have even some sort of coherent opinion on Indian politics. Sure, advocate for what you believe in, and support people when they stand up to our fascist government, but do not for a second think that you can make sweeping statements about the way the country works.
And if you really do want to be reblogging stuff like this, at least try to learn some of the structure of the countries you’re talking about. It’s not that hard to formulate a google search to find what you asked for. I appreciate your want to learn, but this just leaves such a sour taste in my mouth.

How to choose an equitable flutter app development company in India?
Numerous things regarding Flutter would have been mentioned to you. Flutter, according to some, is the technology of the future. Others believe Flutter programming to be a breeze, while some claim that the apps created using Flutter, win a lot of awards. Yes, Flutter is genuinely winning people over, and its popularity says a lot about it. Many companies have embraced technology, like Alibaba, Tencent, Hamilton Musical, Reflectly, as well as an unending list of other popular Flutter App development companies in Vadodara.
With the help of this cross-platform framework, next-generation applications with unparalleled and incredibly dependable mobile UI may be created. The fact that native interfaces can be cross-platform and have high levels of quality is wonderful.
Do you want to create one for your startup company? Don't know what advantages it provides? Do you have trouble deciding which Flutter app development firm to hire? Do not fret. We have addressed each of these concerns in this article and provided clear solutions. Let's begin with a quick overview of Flutter.
Flutter:
Google created the open-source, cross-platform programming tool called Flutter. It offers every service under one roof. Beautiful programmes that function on various platforms and have a native-like feel are possible.
We have already talked about how the most recent Flutter version 1.20 is gaining popularity. After, Flutter is ranked third. In the list of most favoured frameworks from the poll are Net Core and Torch.
The programming language used by Flutter, Dart, has a simple learning curve. One codebase can be created and used across various platforms. Flutter is simple to use, strong, and capable of handling all project complexity levels. It makes developers more productive and enables them to create applications more quickly.
One needs to be aware of the Flutter advantages that a Flutter App development company in Gujarat offers in order to maximize them.

· Faster coding:
· Better speed:

· Cost-effective app management:
How to choose an equitable Flutter App Development Company in India?
Choosing an excellent Flutter App development company in India that can assist you in offering dynamic and new-age mobile app solutions is not an easy task. The chosen business should have a wealth of experience and provide services at competitive rates. Before you begin the process of choosing a development partner, you need to take a few factors into account.
· Determine your precise business needs:
You need to be aware of your business expectations, as we have emphasised numerous times. What you hope to accomplish, how you plan to do it, and why you want to. You should know the answers to these most common questions before you contact a potential app development business.
So that the answers do not surprise you, the plan should at the very least be comprehensible. Some pertinent queries to consider for oneself are
· What features would you like to integrate?
· Which platform would you like to target?
· Who are your ideal clients?
· Specify your budget:
You must specify the financial budget you have set aside for app development. It is preferable to consult it with your potential employer. Request quotes from several businesses and compares the costs and the facility. You can also conduct a search on the internet to learn how much other businesses charge.
However, you must remember that as you switch to a developing country, the cost will alter.
· Shortlist your preferred options:
Now is the time to start looking for options after having a better grasp of the sector. You might enquire about references from your friends and family. Make a note of the businesses you have been referred to, then start looking through their websites. Keep an eye out for every minute detail and make note of any noteworthy observations.
Explore services and portfolios of top Flutter App development companies in Vadodara by visiting their websites and it will help you to shortlist a few of your preferred business options in this manner, from which you can subsequently select one.
· Verify the company's size:
Although this exercise doesn't have a significant impact on the choice, it's always a good idea to perform some background research. You can see if they can handle a project that matches your magnitude from the staffing information. Because a business with fewer staff could get overworked, which also affects the calibre of applications.
Additionally, it would be fantastic if you could learn more about the development team's skill set. Knowing the history of the skill set can help you set reasonable expectations.
· Verify the cost and prompt delivery:
Although it can appear too straight, you must inquire about their turnaround time. This is so they won't let you down by making up justifications. You can also look at their web reviews if you don't feel comfortable approaching them personally.
Verify to see whether they have been reported for missing deadlines. Make sure they have a strong team and a time-management plan in place.
Having said that, a short response time doesn't necessarily indicate that the business charges more. At the outset of the conversation, make the financial restrictions with them fairly obvious.
· Sales Support:
Additionally, we have emphasised time and time again that the development company's responsibility extends beyond simply delivering the finished product. Pitfalls within their duty to handle all future support-related inquiries. When they run into technological problems, they should offer to fix them. Find out whether they offer upgrading facilities.
· Examine the reputation:
With the advent of the internet, it is now much simpler to learn any specifics about a firm or a person. Therefore, thoroughly investigate your potential development partner. Keep an eye on their social media accounts to learn more about how they operate. Examine the testimonies and ratings posted on online platforms.
· Final Thoughts:
The online environment has been subdued by Flutter's innovative apps. It is a state-of-the-art framework that can assist developers in creating the majority of high-grade apps. We wholeheartedly concur with this. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with our experts at Nivida Web Solutions Pvt. Ltd. - a popular Flutter App development company in India, if you have any doubts about Flutter. We have the know-how and a track record of developing excellent Flutter apps. We are able to manage all the Flutter-related difficulties and enable you to achieve your project objectives.

Okay so I figured this might be a good time to share my origin story of becoming a Lionel Messi fan!
(Even if it isn't, my unhinged a** is gonna do it anyway, so enjoy:))
2014 world cup era. My dad has always been obsessed with football in general, and Maradona in particular, so of course he was supporting Argentina out of hangover. My little cousin sister from America had come down to live in India for six months, and in that time we shared not only all our toys, but also headcanons regarding their world, their personalities and their future. As life would have it, we TOTALLY COINCIDENTALLY also happened to possess this clay toy horse named 'Messi', because he was messy. And when the WC started and my dad started yelling Messi Messi at a game, my sis and I obviously went to enquire why our horse had suddenly become so relevant. Then we got to know of Leo's (legendary, spectacular, beautiful, marvellous) existence, and began ROOTING for him throughout the tournament, just because his name matched with the name of our horse. We had absolutely no other context, but that didn't make our devotion superficial. In fact, we prayed every morning so that "Messi" and his team would qualify for the next stage, and we both fought our South-Asian household as kids to stay up till 1 or 2 in the night, I guess, to watch the finals, because time zones.
Needless to say, we were DEVASTATED by his loss. I don't remember if it by was my sis or me, or us both, but the clay horse Messi was smashed to the ground into a thousand pieces in the aftermath of our heartbreak.
That was pretty much my breakup with active participation in football worship. Though in the later years I occasionally got news from my father, I never felt the need to seek out what's going on in that world.
Cut to 2022, the WC starts and I vaguely hear about it. I feel almost nothing, and then Argentina loses against Saudi. I feel this one sharp pang in my chest, but this time it's familiar and long forgotten grief, so I get over it. And then the magic happens… one match after the other, the blue and white army of bbgs keep conquering, and everything in me *screams* "don't give me hope, I can't take this one more time."
I don't watch the finals… perhaps I should mention I have chronic anxiety 🙈. But I keep checking my phone every 5 minutes for stats. Won't waste time saying how excruciating it was, but they make it. Leo makes it, finally! And I imagine our beloved four legged Messi victoriously smiling from somewhere above.
#lionel messi#argentina nt#fifa world cup#world cup 2014#world cup 2022#argentina campeon del mundo#this is the silliest messi lore ever please do not judge#but holy shit is this story so precious to me
