England vs India:  England spinner Rehan Ahmed to return home for personal reasons
Tumblr media
Young England leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed will not take any further part in the five-Test series against India as he is returning home to address some urgent family matters.
The 19-year-old picked up 11 wickets at an average of 44 in the first three Tests of the series, including a six-wicket match haul in the second match in Visakhapatnam.
"Rehan Ahmed will return home for personal reasons with immediate effect from England Men's Test tour of India. He will not be returning to India," England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement on Friday.
"England will not be replacing Ahmed for the rest of the tour."
England on Friday replaced Ahmed with Shoaib Bashir in their playing XI for the fourth Test.
There is just one game remaining in the five-Test series and England have another spinner in their squad in left-arm tweaker Tom Hartley, who is their highest wicket-taker so far in the tour with 16 scalps.
Earlier this month, Ahmed, who is of Pakistani descent, had faced visa issues after arriving from the UAE for the third Test.
He had a single-entry visa that expired once he left for a mid-series break to the UAE, and was initially stopped at the Rajkot airport upon arrival before it was resolved due to the intervention of the Indian government and the BCCI.
India are leading the five-Test series 2-1.
England had won the opening Test by 28 runs but lost the next two matches by 106 runs and 434 runs respectively.

With Broady gone and Jimmy about to retire :((( who do you think will be England's bowling attack from now on? Stuart recently made a statement that Jimmy's retirement (and his own too) leaves England wanting desperately for some experience. And I have to agree with him. I'll admit it, England aren't my team, so the only time I watch their tests is when they are playing against my team, India, and a bit of the ashes here and there. But very honestly, I can't remember any fast bowler apart from Jimmy and Stu to feature consistently in the admittedly small sample of matches I have. Woody is probably the next most consistent to these two. I remember Woakesy was there in the 2020 and the 2021 Ind test series, but I don't think he was there for the recently concluded 2024 one? Or if he did play, it wasn't more than a match or two. Again I remember Sam Curran being really good in the India series in 2018, and I'm pretty sure he played in the 2020 and 2021 series, but again, I don't recall him playing the 2024 one. Which is mystifying tbh, because Sam was absolutely great in the 2018 series, even Kohli said so and credited him with being the difference in the two sides or something like that. And I remember Ollie Robinson played a few against us, because he got into this pretty publicized sledging battle with Virat once. Apart from these three, whom I remember distinctively, I can remember some pacers like Olly (Stone I think??), Craig Overton, Josh Tongue, etc. playing, but they haven't featured consistently in squads or lineups. So who do you think can take up the Jimmy and Stuart mantle now? Because I can't seem to remember anybody who's consistently partnered Jimmy and Stu over the years, and has at least a fraction of their experience.
(God I am so not ready for Jimmy to retire, he debuted before i was born, so I assumed that he's been playing forever and he will continue to play forever 😭😭😭😭)
So I agree - one of the reasons Stuart and Jimmy never retired together was to keep the experience in the dressing room. I also very much think Jimmy has been pushed out rather than left of his own accord. I really desperately hope that he does stay on as bowling coach because at least then we don’t lose that experience.
We have all the ones you listed - woody is more impact than long spells, Jofra is hopefully coming back to tests soon, Sammy should hopefully get another chance, Gus Atkinson as well is being listed as the next one to watch. Woakesy didn’t play in the recent India test but I hope they do bring him back into the home attack. We also have tongue, Overton, stone. Personally I don’t rate Robinson but he’ll likely get a few more goes as we now try and work out what our future bowling attack looks like.
It was always going to be like this when either/both Stuart and Jimmy went because they’ve been the backbone of the England test squad for so long. I mean good on the management team seeing the India performance and declaring something needed changing. I just hope they do it right or it’s gonna be a tough few years

[ad_1] Australia outplayed India in Adelaide to level the series (PC: X) Boria Majumdar in Melbourne The Boxing Day Test is the biggest draw of the Australian summer. Talking of great rivalries in cricket, it doesn’t get better than India versus Australia. Ticket sales have been very encouraging, and if administrators are to be believed, a crowd of 90,000 is expected at the MCG on December 26 when the Boxing Day Test gets underway. There’s a lot at stake for both these powerhouses of world cricket, each aiming to make the final of the World Test Championship and give their fans the perfect New Year present. The Indian fans’ dislike of the Aussies is palpable if you speak to Indians in Australia. Take this for a statement from someone I met at the airport: “We need to beat the Aussies to avenge the attacks on Siraj and Jadeja over the past couple of weeks,” said the fan. “2018 was sweet. 2021 was sweeter. This will be the sweetest.” Australia, it is evident, have gradually become the new Pakistan where Indian cricket fans are concerned. Unlike England, against whom we no longer carry any political baggage and hence a loss is part of the game, India versus Australia cricket is now a proxy war and Australians the new sworn enemies. This works well for us in India. With bilateral series against Pakistan a thing of the past as a result of the political chaos across the border, Indian fans, with their great appetite for spectacles, needed a new great adversary. Australia fit the bill perfectly. Incidents like Monkeygate triggered it, and Australian aggression on the field became grist for the hate mill. False media reports against Indian players have helped churn the sentiment and it is certain we are about to witness more than a high-powered cricket series in the next three weeks. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here The Australian players during the first Test in Perth. Photo: Debasis Sen/RevSportz This works. Because cricket was and is the true national game in both India and Australia, it is so because it could be played against the English as part of the great imperial project. Hockey in India or Aussie Rules in Australia could not, and hence their legacies, like their origins, remain curious in the sporting hierarchies of the two countries. When George Orwell said: ‘Serious sport is war minus the shooting’, this is what he was alluding to. This is what really answers the question: ‘Why cricket, not hockey in India?’ If sport is, in fact, a metaphor (and in some cases a metonym) for war, then cricket simply was a necessity in both India and Australia. Prowess in any old sport wasn’t enough, prowess had to be demonstrated in the empire’s sport, which would mark a symbolic victory against the ruling state. These deep passions will undoubtedly be aroused again during the Boxing Day Test, billed by many as the match of the year in 2024. With a media v player side story adding an extra edge to this intense cricketing rivalry, the label might well turn out to be the perfect tagline for this summer of cricket in Australia. And for India, the stakes were never higher. A win in one of the next two Tests and they will have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It will be a rare achievement and one that no team in the recent past can boast of. Rohit Sharma and his boys will know it. Needless to say, they will do their best to achieve it for themselves and their fans. The Excitement of WTC 2024-25: A New Era for Test Cricket! 🏏🔥
Tumblr media
The World Test Championship (WTC) 2024-25 is just around the corner, and cricket fans across the globe are brimming with excitement! The prestigious competition has completely changed the landscape of Test cricket, bringing new energy to the longest format of the game. With a fresh batch of thrilling rivalries, new players emerging as key contenders, and the race to qualify intensifying, the WTC 2024-25 promises to be an unforgettable cricketing journey.
As we gear up for the next cycle of this incredible competition, let’s dive into what makes the WTC 2024-25 such a significant chapter in Test cricket history. 🌍🏆
What is the World Test Championship? 🤔
Before we get into the upcoming 2024-25 season, let’s quickly recap what the World Test Championship (WTC) is all about. Launched in 2019 by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the WTC was created to bring context and excitement to Test cricket, which, at times, can be overshadowed by shorter formats like ODIs and T20s. The championship aims to crown the world’s best Test team every two years, creating a series of high-stakes matches that stretch across multiple continents. 🌏🌟
The first cycle of the WTC (2019-2021) was a massive success. The final between New Zealand and India at Lord’s in June 2021 captivated millions of cricket fans. New Zealand, under the calm leadership of Kane Williamson, emerged victorious, becoming the first-ever WTC champions. 🏅👏
What’s New in the WTC 2024-25? 🌟
With the thrilling conclusion of the first WTC cycle, we now look ahead to the 2024-2025 cycle. The format remains largely the same, but there are some exciting new dynamics that will make the upcoming season even more interesting:
1. New Teams, New Rivalries 🤩
One of the most exciting aspects of the WTC 2024-25 is the emergence of new rivalries and the rise of new teams in Test cricket. While traditional powerhouses like India, Australia, and England remain favorites, nations like Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Pakistan are also looking to shake up the competition. 🏏💥
Australia, the defending champions, is looking to continue their dominant form, with players like Pat Cummins and David Warner leading the charge.
India, with their rock-solid squad and deep pool of talent, are determined to make a comeback after their heartbreak in the previous cycle. The Virat Kohli-led team has the skill and hunger to rise to the top again. 💪
England, who have had an up-and-down journey in the past, are on the rise, thanks to their youthful aggression and new coaching philosophies. Under Ben Stokes’ leadership, they could be a real threat! ⚡
But what’s most thrilling about the WTC 2024-25 is the underdog story. Nations like West Indies, New Zealand, and even Bangladesh have the potential to surprise the world with their performances. 👀⚡
2. Race for the Final 🚀
Just like the previous cycle, only the top two teams at the end of the league stage will make it to the WTC Final. And the battle for those two coveted spots will be fierce! Teams will play against each other in a series of bilateral series and tournaments over the next two years. 🏆
The point system will once again be crucial: teams gain points based on match wins and the series outcome. While Test matches will take center stage, every series will matter in the race to qualify for the grand finale at The Oval in 2025. 💫🌟
3. Match Venues and Conditions 🏟️🌍
The beauty of the WTC lies in the diversity of match venues. Matches are spread across different countries, with varied pitches, weather conditions, and playing styles. Teams will have to adapt to the unique challenges presented by different conditions, whether it’s the spinning tracks of India, the bouncy wickets in Australia, or the swinging conditions in England. 🌦️
This variation makes the WTC even more exciting because teams are constantly pushed out of their comfort zones. India will have to overcome their own struggles on overseas soil, while England will be tested when they travel to subcontinent conditions. 🏏🔥
4. The Evolution of Test Cricket 🌱
What makes the WTC 2024-25 particularly thrilling is the way Test cricket is evolving. Modern-day Test cricket is seeing more aggressive play, with teams playing a more attacking brand of cricket than ever before. The introduction of new rules (like the over-rate penalty) and innovations such as the pink ball has sparked a new wave of interest. 🌟
The arrival of players like Marnus Labuschagne, Shubman Gill, and Kyle Jamieson is a testament to how Test cricket is evolving, blending classical techniques with modern flair. These young stars are changing the way Test cricket is played, and we can expect more dynamic performances in the 2024-25 season. 🚀👊
Players to Watch in WTC 2024-25 🔥
The WTC 2024-25 will undoubtedly feature some outstanding individual performances. Here are a few players to keep an eye on:
1. Pat Cummins (Australia) 🇦🇺
As the captain of Australia, Pat Cummins is one of the best fast bowlers in the world. With his leadership, Australia will be looking to defend their WTC title, and Cummins’ ability to lead from the front, both with the ball and as a captain, will be pivotal. 🔥🎯
2. Joe Root (England) 🏴‍☠️
Joe Root has been a stalwart for England in Test cricket for years. His ability to adapt to various conditions and his consistency with the bat makes him a player to watch in the 2024-25 cycle. Expect Root to play a key role in England’s quest for the WTC final. 💥
3. Rishabh Pant (India) 🇮🇳
The fearless wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, is one of the most exciting talents in world cricket. With his ability to turn matches around in a single session, Pant will be key to India’s hopes in the WTC 2024-25. 🔥
4. Kane Williamson (New Zealand) 🇳🇿
Kane Williamson is a master of patience and technique. The calm leader of the Black Caps led New Zealand to the WTC 2019-2021 final victory, and his experience will be crucial as New Zealand aims for a repeat performance in the next cycle. 🏆
5. Babar Azam (Pakistan) 🇵🇰
Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, is a brilliant batter and an astute leader. His consistency with the bat and his leadership will be critical for Pakistan’s bid to make it to the top two in the WTC 2024-25. 💪
Why the WTC 2024-25 is More Than Just Cricket 🎉
While the WTC 2024-25 will bring epic battles and thrilling moments on the field, it also represents a bigger story for the future of Test cricket. The championship continues to generate immense global interest and brings fans from different countries together. The drama, the rivalries, and the passion on display make the WTC more than just a cricket tournament—it’s a global celebration of the game. 🌏🎉
As the competition progresses, fans can look forward to more iconic moments and new rivalries that will keep us on the edge of our seats. From stunning individual performances to incredible team comebacks, the WTC 2024-25 will give us a lot to talk about. 🏏💥
Final Thoughts 🚀
The WTC 2024-25 is poised to be one of the most exciting cycles of Test cricket ever. With fresh rivalries, intense competition, and the sheer unpredictability of the sport, it promises to capture the hearts of cricket fans worldwide. For the New Zealand Test team, the past 12 months have been nothing short of a wild trip. Before the three Test matches in India, they had only won one of four series, against a weak South African team. The problems were made worse by Tim Southee resigning as captain following the 2-0 series loss in Sri Lanka. Nobody had given them a chance, either. All went well for New Zealand during the series, as they won crucial moments in all three games after bowling out India for 46 on the opening morning of play in Bengaluru. They accomplished the unimaginable by defeating India 3-0 in a series in India when they had nothing to lose. An accomplishment never before accomplished by a touring team on Indian soil, rendered the more significant by Kane Williamson's exclusion from the series.
With a spot in the World Test Championship final still up for grabs, if other outcomes go their way, New Zealand suddenly has everything on the line once more. If they do not make it to the final at Lord's, this will also be the final Test series for former captain and fast bowler Tim Southee, and the hosts will try to give him a spectacular send-off.
In contrast, England enters this series hoping to recover from their October 2-1 series loss to Pakistan under circumstances they would describe as extremely unfamiliar. On both of their subcontinental trips this year, their strategy of remaining aggressive even in challenging situations with "Bazball" has failed them, as wickets have fallen in clusters even when one batsman got his eye in.
The two-day warm-up game before the series demonstrated the same thing. None of the other batters were able to turn their starts into significant totals, with the exception of Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Zak Crawley, who each reached a half-century. Tim Southee's Test debut coincided with England's most recent series victory in New Zealand, which came under Michael Vaughan in 2008. After 16 long years, the visitors will feel much more at home on New Zealand's faster courses and try to change the course of history.
When: November 28 to December 2, 2024; 11:00am Local Time | 10pm GMT (Nov 27) | 3:30am IST
Where: Hagley Oval, Christchurch
What to expect: Most days in Christchurch should be gloomy, but there should not be any rain that would stop play. Hagley Oval has historically favored bowlers on the first day, but as four of the top five chases in New Zealand have taken place here, including two in the past two years, it gradually becomes easier to bat on.
Team news
New Zealand: All-rounder Nathan Smith will make his Test debut, while Kane Williamson will take Will Young's spot as Player of the Series in India, according to a news conference held by Tom Latham prior to the match.
Devon Conway, Tom Latham (C), Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Nathan Smith, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, and Will O'Rourke are the likely starting lineup.
England: Two days prior to the game, the visitors revealed their starting lineup. Ollie Pope will take over after Jamie Smith is unable to play due to an injury sustained during practice, which prevented Jordan Cox from making his debut. Jacob Bethell, a batting all-rounder, will bat at the third position in his Test debut.
Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope (wk), Ben Stokes (C), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Shoaib Bashir, and Zak Crawley are the confirmed starting lineup.
What they said:
"I followed up after Steady (Gary Stead) spoke with Young regarding it. As previously stated, he is an excellent team player and did nothing improper. Although it was a difficult choice, Tom Latham said, "I suppose that when you are in a position to make difficult decisions, it shows your team is in a good spot, so yeah, obviously heartbroken for Young but thrilled with Kane coming back."

Virat Kohli fumbles as India’s top ICC-ranking batsman following the lean patch in Tests
Tumblr media
In an era where matches are played almost every day, the ICC ranking is the best way to evaluate the current stars of the game. The International Cricket Council, the top-most governing body in the sport, keeps track of all the ongoing series and updates the respective rankings consistently. The ICC ranking is categorized as per the formats with the top performers in Test, ODI, and T20I listed in the standings. Moreover, the best performers of the matches and series are named as the leading ICC-ranking batsmen. A recent reshuffle among the League of the ICC ranking batsmen, however, staged a significant disappointment for India.
Virat Kohli loses his place as the top ICC-ranking batsman for the first time in a decade
India endured a heavy blow in Tests recently when New Zealand beat the team 0-3 in their backyard. The series defeat against the Kiwis broke India’s long-standing record of remaining unbeaten in the red-ball series at home. Moreover, the white ferns handed India their first-ever 0-3 series whitewash on their home turf in the format. The unfortunate series witnessed senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggling with their forms. In fact, the whole of the 2024 season has been a meek show for Kohli in the format. A dry spell lasting this long was bound to hamper Kohli’s standing as the top ICC-ranking batsman. The recent update in the ICC rankings witnessed the Indian great slipping out of the Top 20 in the ICC ranking of Test in nearly a decade.
The last time for Virat to be buried this deep in the rankings was the dip in the form he faced during 2014. The season saw Kohli struggling substantially on the England tour where he managed to score just 134 runs across five matches at an average of 13.4. However, the struggle was followed by a golden run for the Indian Test skipper in the format. From 2016 to 2018, Kohli showcased his best batting form across formats, even claiming the No. 1 spot to be crowned as the top ICC ranking batsman in the longest format. He also made history as the first Indian to top the ICC rankings in all three formats during the illustrious phase.
However, a string of poor performances in the recent Test series against New Zealand, where Kohli scored just 93 runs at an average of 15.50, has led to his fall in rankings. His overall Test batting average has also dipped to 47.83, the lowest since November 2016. After the forgettable series, Kohli dropped to the 22nd spot in the ICC rankings, a league that he last formed a part of in December 2014.
Along with Virat Kohli, India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, also dropped from his position among the ICC ranking batsman, falling to 26th spot. Meanwhile, India’s standing as the No. 1 team in ODIs and T20Is remains intact, but they have slipped to second place in Tests, trailing Australia after a 3-0 series loss to New Zealand. Despite Kohli’s dip, several Indian players have been named as leading ICC-ranking batsmen. Yashasvi Jaiswal ranks fourth among Test batters, with Rishabh Pant at sixth and Shubman Gill at 16th.
