I understand your theory about the red carpets and parties, but I just remembered that Sydney Sweeny’s fiancé is rarely seen with her especially at her premieres and I’m not sure if she posts him on her Instagram that frequently. I think I found out she was engaged from a paparazzi photo that showed her wearing a ring on that finger. I’m not saying this is the route Cam may take going forward but I think it’s possible.
This is possible. I agree. Cam does go to events with photographers present and has been known to bring both friends and significant others to them. He's also been known to go alone.
I think what I'm getting at is more like the gathering he might go to at people's homes or friends' weddings or their annual Friendsgiving tradition. Things like that where it's semi-casual or all couples, so going alone if you have a girlfriend would seem illogical.

[...] The featured music in The Crown season 4 varies in tone massively. For example, episode three includes various pop tracks that parallel Diana's ascent within the Royal Family, however, the subsequent episode includes no pop music whatsoever. After several music-lite episodes during the second half of the series, the musical tone picks up in the penultimate production. Here's every featured song in The Crown season 4.
Episode 1: "Gold Stick" "Jerusalem" by Sir Hubert Parry: The funeral service for Lord Mountbatten begins. Meanwhile, an Irish man reads a report about the Irish Republican Army taking responsibility for the execution, along with the deaths of 18 British soldiers at Warren Point. The man addresses Irish Republicans and states that Lord Mountbatten was the "ultimate symbol" of imperialist oppression. "Jerusalem" ends as Prince Charles begins his speech.
"Call Me" by Blondie: Diana receives a call from Charles, the Prince of Wales. Shortly before, Charles has a brief second meeting with Diana after the death of Lord Mountbatten.
Episode 2: "The Balmoral Test" "Verdi’s La Traviata – Prelude Act 1" by Giuseppe Verdi: Charles and Diana attend the opera together. Diana explains that she adores Verdi because his music is so romantic, and Charles explains that focusing only on the romantic aspects of the work diminishes the composer's legacy and political influence.
"Scotland the Brave": Margaret Thatcher attends a sporting event in Scotland with her husband Denis and The Royal Family. She doesn't find any value in the experience and states that the country needs to change fundamentally, top to bottom.
"Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D, BWV 1050: Affetuoso" by Johann Sebastian Bach: After Diana proves herself to the Royal Family at Balmoral, she's followed by the press in London (and seems to enjoy the attention). Meanwhile, Margaret Thatcher attends a government photo session. A new stag head is also placed in a Balmoral dining room.
Episode 3: "Fairytale"
"Upside Down" by Diana Ross: Diana is briefly shown driving in her vehicle.
"Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks: Diana returns home after getting engaged to Charles and celebrates with her flatmates. The young women drive around the city and party before the main title sequence. An acapella version of the song also plays during the final credits.
"Vienna" by Ultravox: After an awkward Royal Family event, Diana learns about Royal Family rules and etiquette. A brief insert shot shows Diana waking up at 8:30 a.m. and listening to "Vienna."
"Girls on Film" by Duran Duran: Diana receives mail, watches TV, and then roller skates around Buckingham Palace while listening to "Girls on Film." The song drowns out while she looks at paintings and reflects on her new reality.
"Song for Guy" by Elton John: After discovering that Charles had a bracelet made for Camilla, Diana calms herself by dancing and practicing ballet.
"I Vow to Thee, My Country": Charles greets admirers outside a cathedral. Inside, Diana watches while preparing to confront him about a bracelet for "Gladys" (Camilla).
Episode 4: "Favourites"
The Crown "Favourites" doesn't include any featured songs.
Episode 5: "Fagan" "Boys Don't Cry" by The Cure: Michael Fagan lights a cigarette and takes a walk. The scene kicks off a flashback narrative that details his 1982 break-in at Buckingham Palace.
"Monkey Man" by The Specials: Michael Fagan drinks beer at a pub, spot his ex-wife, and threatens her partner. In a transition sequence, Margaret Thatcher arrives at Buckingham Palace to discuss the Falkland Islands conflict with Argentina.
"God Save the Queen": The Royal Family prepares to meet with the public.
"Queen’s Company" by The Band of the Grenadier Guards: The Queen takes the royal salute during her annual birthday celebration.
"Twenty Four Hours" by Joy Division: Michael Fagan smokes a cigarette after a physical altercation with his ex-wife's parter. The moment comes shortly after he breaks into Buckingham Palace for the first time.
"Whine and Grine/Stand Down Margaret" by The English Beat: The song plays over the end credits and an epilogue about Michael Fagan.
Episode 6: "Terra Nullius"
"Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You" by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Charles introduces Diana in Sydney after a rekindling of their romance. The couple later dances at a public event while the paparazzi take photographs. The song plays again during the end credits.
Episode 7: "The Hereditary Principle" "C'est si bon" by Dean Martin: Princess Margaret applies makeup and watches Queen Elizabeth on television.
"Let’s Dance" by David Bowie: Princess Margaret and Dazzle drink and dance together.
"Fallin" by Connie Francis: Princess Margaret goes on vacation after ending her relationship with Dazzle.
Episode 8: "48:1"
"Fite Dem Back" by Linton Kwesi Johnson: South African people dance in the streets while protesting.
"Inglan Is a Bitch" by Linton Kwesi Johnson: The song plays over the end credits.
Episode 9: "Avalanche" "Othello, Act I: Una vela!" by Giuseppe Verdi: Charles celebrates his 37th birthday at the opera with Diana.
"Swan Lake, Pas De Deux (1), Act II" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Diana looks at Charlies inside the opera house.
"Fidelio, Op.72, Act II: Intro and Aria" by Ludwig van Beethoven: A man performs on stage while Diana tells Charles that she needs to powder her nose.
"Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel: Diana joins one of the performers on stage. The song drowns out as Charles gazes at Diana and realizes that she'll once again receive more press than him the following day.
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen: Diana, William, and Harry sing together during an anniversary road trip to Highgrove Royal Gardens.
"All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera: As an anniversary gift, Diana plays Charles a VHS tape of her performing in costume on the West End. Charles laters mocks his wife while speaking with Anne.
Episode 10: "War"
"Theme from New York, New York": Diana arrives in New York City and attends a public event.
"Baby, It’s Cold Outside" by Ella Fitzgerald: Charles and Diana attend a holiday event after arguing about their marriage.
"Silent Night": The Royal Family poses for a photograph. The season comes to an end by foreshadowing Diana's tragic fate through a shutter flash.
Martin Phipps composed The Crown season 4 score.

could you write one where the reader and withers cal or ash are engaged but she’s still in grad school and he is super excited to get married but she has no time to help plan the wedding until after she graduates so she tells him if he wants to get married so soon he can plan it all. idk if that made sense but the idea is super cute to me
i can just imagine calum having a pinterest inspiration board (i mean my very single self has one so..) let me see this man on his wedding day please i’m begging
Wedding Planner
Calum couldn't believe you had said yes to marrying him, well he could but it still felt surreal to know that you were both going to be intertwined as one for the rest of your lives. He didn't want to wait to marry you, he couldn't wait to marry you. This guy is passionate so he wants to get the wedding planning started as soon as possible. In his haste to start his new life with you, he manages to forget that you're a semester or two away from finishing your degree, the workload and stress having been your main focus for the past couple of months until you had a break and calum had whisked you off to Sydney for a vacation that he had planned for the engagement. You feel bad when you see his smile drop when you tell him you'll have to wait until your degree is finished before you start to plan anything yourself. so you jokingly tell him that he should plan it if he really wants to marry you that bad. The poor guy is up all of that night texting the guys asking them for advice because he's only ever planned a party not a whole celebration of love and he doesn't even know where to start. Those next few weeks he's off to Ashton's house with his laptop as he tries his best to find inspiration for a wedding he knows you'd both like. He's picked out locations you can both look at once your schedule opens up and he's picked out a menu for the reception that is vegetarian but doesn't look or sound disgusting. He's even picked out the song that he wants to be your first dance song. He's so excited that he even makes a whole google doc with links and everything and obviously he has Ash added into it because how could he not have his best man helping him. A week or two after you graduate and you're both all celebrated out you bring up a date for the wedding while you’re both in the living room watching a movie and he's up from the couch rushing to get his laptop to show you everything he's planned and thought about for the last couple of months. You can't help the tears that prick your eyes because while you've been so stressed over your degree and trying to find time when you'll be able to plan the wedding, Calum's been preparing for this day ever since he proposed to you. You both spend all day looking through the endless links that he's found about weddings and what needs to be ordered when until you both are laying in bed crying over wedding videos on a website for the photographer you were both interested in.

My Writing Journey
Hello my darlings ♡ Welcome to my blog! If you’ve found your way here, thank you so much for following me on my writing journey. It means the world to have you engage with me as I pave my way to publication. This post is something I’ve been wanting to write forever now, and I’m so delighted to share it with you. I believe when you reach a certain point during whatever path you’re on, it’s important to reflect on what brought you to where you are. For me, I am currently querying my first novel, LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA (which will have its own blog post very soon). It has been such a challenging and reflective time for me, filled with mixed emotions and uncertainty. Regardless of the “bad days” when I am met with rejection after rejection, I am still so proud of myself for making it to this point. And believe it or not, there are “good days” too (like landing a spot on the Top 25 Pitches list for PitMad, and receiving full requests from agents I’m really excited about). And in those moments of success and fulfillment, I am always reminded of what started it all.
Like most writers, I’ve always loved English. There’s no need to get into that. But unlike a lot of writers, I fell in love with language before I fell in love with storytelling. I think what triggered my love for the sound of words was getting my heart broken . . . by my first love, by my family, by my friends at the time. Literature, lyrics, prose . . . those were the only things that made me feel whole. When I had nothing, I found comfort in how words fell off the tongue like honey and wine. It was like a secret language that only I could hear, which evoked a euphoria unlike anything else. When I’d read books like Romeo & Juliet or The Great Gatsby, I could feel myself turn pink with a warm glow. The prose from those stories struck me like a cord. It brought me to life. But there was one writer who shaped me above the rest, and she wasn’t even an author. She was a musician.
Lana Del Rey.
Do I even have to say more?
I fell in love with Lana unlike any boy I’d loved before. Her lyrics seemed to understand me in a way no one else did, and I resonated with her as if she were my best friend. I think my true awakening was listening to her music (her song Video Games saved my life during my darkest hours). It was enchanting. Her music told stories, and I’d paint them in my mind. I’d imagine myself as the main character of her songs, and daydream about my downfall in a poetic, romantic way. It all seems very melodramatic now, but she is the main reason I decided I wanted to be a writer.
I started with writing poetry, getting in touch with language and rhythm, familiarizing myself with how different words sounded next to each other. I think the biggest reason my prose is so lyrical now is because I was a poet before I was a fiction writer. But I didn’t want to just write poetry. I wanted to be an artist. I wanted be be like Lana. Her music wasn’t just music in my eyes. It was an aesthetic, a feeling, something so perfectly her that no one else could imitate it. Not even me.
I fell in love with fairytales next. I vividly recall one sunny afternoon with my best friend Sydney. We had spent the day at the beach, and when we came home, she read me fairytales on her bedroom floor. I remember wanting to escape, wanting to live in a dark and beautiful world where I was an enchantress and no one could hurt me. But I also fell in love with the lighter stories too. I wanted to be a princess. I still do. I wanted sweet days and sunshine and a prince charming who wouldn’t break my heart. Sometimes I would even think to myself . . . what if I’m supposed to be a princess on another planet?
Honestly, that was the first seed for LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA.
More thoughts came soon after:
. . . What if my true love is already dead and he’s waiting for me on the other side? The side where I’m a princess! And on that other side, I’d be mind numbingly gorgeous! . . .
. . . Or, what if my true love has been dead for years and years, and only visits me as my guardian angel! We could never be together if that’s the case though . . . now could we? And that’s why I’m *doomed* to be single forever!!! . . .
But in the back of my mind, I always thought that idea was quite romantic. A guardian angel watching over me, in love with me. That’s why he never lets anything bad ever happen to me. He’s someone to protect me, someone to shield me from all the darkness I’ve been battling.
And then came the dreams.
I had a series of dreams every day for a week straight. It was always the same thing. I’d be drowning. I could feel myself dying, struggling to breathe. For some reason, the water was always beautiful, and I was strangely aware of that even while I was suffering. But then, this handsome man would reach down and save me, pulling me towards the surface. However, when we’d brake the water, I’d be in a different world. My dream world! The world where I was a princess, and I was beautiful! But most importantly . . . the world where I was reunited with my guardian angel.
I knew I had to write this story. I had to! Only . . . I didn’t know how. I wasn’t ready. It was one of those concepts that felt too big to pull off in the way I imagined it. But I also knew that this was the story of my heart. It was rooted in my traumas, something beautiful birthed by all my darkness. Only, I was 16. I hadn’t learned how to properly feel all the things I felt. I didn’t understand it, I didn’t understand me. But I knew I wanted to write about this beautiful girl from my dreams, filled with emotion and chaos and . . . love. At the end of the day, she was always filled with love.
I wasn’t bold enough to write the story of my dreams. And so . . . I daydreamed about it instead. I fell in love with the aesthetic of the story. I imagined the world first. I imagined her beauty. . . all of her dresses . . . her handsome guardian angel. I became obsessed with my main tumblr @bambi-la-bella ♡ I wanted to live in the images I collected. I created mood boards. I imagined worlds within those photographs. I dreamt of her adventures. I created scenarios in my head.
My writing has always been vivid and cinematic. I have Tumblr to thank for that. I always knew my aesthetic was meaningful in some sort of way, and I wanted my art to reflect it through and through. Present day, I’m building a whole brand surrounding my aesthetic, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
At the time, I still never felt like I could be a writer. Not the kind of writer I wanted to be. I didn’t think I could create fantasy or fairytales. I did try my hand at storytelling though. But I never touched LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA. I would always write these shitty John Green inspired contemporaries about manic pixie dream girls and runaway teens who’d road trip across the world, escaping their problems instead of confronting them. I’d write about girls like Effy Stonem and Alaska Young, who were broken and beautiful, but not in the way my dream girl was . . . unlike her, they were missing one thing. They weren’t filled with love. I didn’t know how to channel it. I didn’t know how to love myself. All I knew was that I was destructive. I was chaos incarnate. And I wanted to be free.
Senior year, I gave up on writing for good.
I was extremely lost when I began college. It’s not something I want to get into, but I was so empty. Waking up every morning hurt. My second semester of freshman year, I decided to join a sorority. I was looking for friends, looking to feel like I belonged to something special. Only, I didn’t feel like I belonged . . . not really. I didn’t feel like myself. I don’t even really think I knew who I was at the time either. But I knew I wasn’t a pretty prefect instagram model. I wasn’t skinny and tiny like all my friends. I always felt a need to keep up with them. I wanted to look like them, act like them, be like them. I had no one else to look up to at that point. The thing is, they did made me feel special. When I was with them, I felt powerful, like nothing could hurt me. It was all an illusion. Deep down, I knew I wasn’t like them. Not in the way I wanted to be.
Then I came across Gabriella Demartino, and everything changed.
If you don’t know who Gabi is, she’s an American YouTuber who celebrates all things vintage, glam, and girly. I instantly became obsessed with her life and style. I began dressing like her, doing my makeup like her, embracing things I actually loved. She made me realize I didn’t care about raves or frat parties. I wanted to go to tea. I wanted to watch the Nutcracker Ballet and go vintage dress shopping. I wanted sleepovers with champagne and Audrey Hepburn films on repeat. In my greatest fantasies, I imagined shopping at Chanel, living in Paris, dining at Laduree! . . . Gabi made me realize I wanted to create a life worth living. I wanted to be me. I wanted to be the girl from my dreams from that once upon a time.
One winter day, Gabi posted this video she created for Christmas time. It was inspired by The Princess and the Pauper, and so whimsical to me. I wanted to live in that story. I wanted to twirl around in a lacy dress and munch on sugar cookies. I wanted to fall asleep by the fire with a ribbon in my hair and play dress up in her walk-in closet. I wanted to create something just like it. I wanted to . . . I wanted to write. After two years, I wanted to write.
♡ a picture from the video that inspired it all ♡
Here’s the tea . . . when I began writing LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA (which back then was called SWEET ROSE), I was working at a dead end job. And when I say dead end, I mean DEAD. END. We had no manager. Our shop owner rarely ever stopped by. Nobody really cared about what we were supposed to be doing (we were a bunch of 18-20 year olds with no supervision) . . . and there was a computer. Right where the cash wrap was. I was alone during my shift. We had no customers that day. And so, I began to write . . . and write . . . and write. I wrote until I had my very first chapter about Lila Rose Li. Everything I’d learned in high school culminated to this very moment. My lyrical prose. My aesthetic. And my story. (which at the time was VERY different).
I was extremely proud of my first chapter! I wanted to share it with the world! I . . . I wanted to become an author.
I wanted to become an author.
That was always a dream I had in high school, but I never thought that it would ever come true. Instead, I was in a sorority, trying to be someone I wasn’t . . . studying fashion, which I was failing at and hated . . . but most importantly, I wasn’t being true to myself. Being an author was a dream I had that felt exclusively . . . mine.
I decided to take the whole writing thing seriously. And to do so, I told my friends so that they could hold me accountable. “Hey, I want to be a published author!” I said one day. I’m not sure if anyone actually took me seriously at the time, but I let them read my writing as I go, excited that I was writing for someone other than myself. However, Sydney would critique me as I went, which made me realize . . . oh shit. I’m still not ready to tell this story the way I want. Will I ever be ready? HOW will I ever be ready?
And so, I took the biggest risk I could. The year before I was supposed to graduate college, I decided to change my major to Creative Writing. My mother cried. She thought I was being absolutely ridiculous. She told me she’d never believe in me until I proved myself to her (news flash: present day she supports my writing immensely and prays for me to get a book deal every single night). But at the time . . . I was a disgrace. I was the dishonorable child who didn’t care what mom and dad thought. It’s true. I didn’t care. I’d risk it all to become the writer I always dreamt of being. Even if that meant my family hated me.
Despite the discourse with my family, this is still probably my favorite part of the journey — being a creative writing major, finding my people, my voice, and my best friend: @chloegracewrites ♡ It started with dinner parties with classmates I’d met in CW 301. We’d sit around a cheese plate, drink wine, and talk about our story ideas. It was the most wonderful time of my life. I finally felt like I fit in somewhere after searching forever. But when I met Chloe . . . I can’t even tell you how it changed my life.
The day I met her I felt like we were two halves of a whole. We bonded over our love for Laini Taylor, and eventually had our first “creative writing date” where we just gushed about writing instead of actually writing. Most of my brainstorming was done with her. She helped me realize ideas I hadn’t even fully formed yet. In fact, I plotted the concept for my final version of LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA with her just about a year ago (In August, when I started my final draft). When I think of becoming a serious writer, I think of Chloe. I think about how she pushed me, and how she was the only one out of my peers I trusted to make me better. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
A lot happened before I actually started to get . . . good.
I’m not going to lie, when I first started my creative writing classes, I thought I was hot shit. Unlike my peers, I already had a style. I had a story and an aesthetic and I had a voice. Only . . . I didn’t realize that voice wasn’t good. I used to cry every time we had workshop. I didn’t understand that my peers were just trying to make me better. It wasn’t until my teacher turned mentor (let’s call him MDL) lit a damn fire beneath my ass. He returned my first writing assignment to me. I was less than enthused by the grade. Of course, I cried. I cried and cried and was probably known as the girl who cried! But above all, I was pissed! I wanted to be better than this. I knew I was better than this!
I thought about my parents. I remembered everything I sacrificed for my dreams. I thought of quitting my sorority, of quitting fashion, of leaving all my friends behind to follow my own path . . . but most importantly, I remembered that I wanted to be a writer. And if I wanted to be a writer, I sure as hell had to take things seriously.
My inner slytherin LEAPED out. I was vicious when it came to perfection. I would accept nothing less. In the end, I still cried. But I cried like Azula in the last episode of ATLA: upset that I didn’t win, upset that I wasn’t perfect. My obsession was sick, and yet . . . I was oddly proud of myself. I knew I’d stop at nothing to be the best writer I could be. I wrote twice every day: once in the morning, and once at night. Mind you, I had a job, went to school, and worked an internship at the time. Eventually, one of my professors broke me. He deemed me emotionally unstable. He called me a distraction to the rest of the class because of my perfectionism. And just like that, I realized how insane I’d gotten, and how obsessed with perfection I’d become. But even then, I was thankful. When I got kicked out of class, I scrapped my whole novel for the third time and began again.
Another fire was lit, and I was going to prove him wrong.
I decided I wanted to go to grad school to get my MFA in Childrens and Young Adult Writing at the New School in New York. Partially because this professor told me I wasn’t a “serious enough writer” for grad school and that I “needed help.” Boy did that make me mad! I’ll show you, I said to myself. I worked twice as hard, but this time, without the tears or self destruction. You know that scene in The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda tells Andrea “you’re not working hard enough” after Andrea bent over backwards for her job? Well I had that moment too. And just like Andrea, I collected myself, and worked harder than hard. I was basically the Elle Woods of the Creative Writing Department, and I HAD to prove myself.
And boy, did I work hard as hell.
Remember that other professor, MDL? Oh yeah. By the end of the year, he went from being critical of my writing to praising it. He even offered me a mentorship (mind you, this was super cool because he’s an award winning author). I won’t give away too much, but I am so thankful for his guidance. By the end of that semester, one of my peers had told me something I’d never forget. She said, “You know Kiana, I’ve always admired how seriously you take criticism. I’m impressed with how hard you work to become the best writer you can be.” I was so proud of myself in that moment.
Although, I think I’m quite different now. After falling in love with my novel, it’s hard for me to accept anyone else’s opinion other than my own. But again . . . I’m getting ahead of myself.
That summer, August to be exact, my novel was no longer SWEET ROSE. It was no longer DEVIL’S ROSE, or DEVIL’S ROSE 2.0. It was . . . LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA. I remember blurting out my ideas for the rewrite to Chloe, and having them not make sense out loud. She seemed to understand me though. For some reason, I think she always has, even when I don’t think I make any sense at all. We talked over my plot, and when I sat down to write . . . it felt like the story I always wanted to tell.
A year after my chaotic semester of getting kicked out of class with a permanent W on my transcript, I no longer felt the need to go to grad school. To my surprise, I was proud of how I’d evolved (plus COVID happened lol). However, all of that hard work from last year still paid off. I got accepted anyways with 50% of my tuition covered. It was a merit scholarship based on my application alone (BASED ON MY OPENING CHAPTERS OF LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA)!!! I was in disbelief! Take that mr. professor who said I wasn’t serious enough for grad school!
By the time I finished writing my novel in May of 2020, I felt like my story was a work of art. It was my story. The story of my heart. And I had finally created the version of it I’d always dreamed of. But again, I’m getting ahead of myself.
Flashback to March of 2020, my life began to change even more. I joined writing Twitter pre-COVID, and found my community. With the pandemic going on, I began to create a lot of online friendships. I was connecting with so many other writers, and I learned a lot from them all.
But my most successful online friendship wasn’t found through Twitter. It was through here on Tumblr. I was convinced I had met my soulmate: @wistful-giselle ♡
Speaking to Giselle felt like every Lana Del Rey song I’d ever listened to. It felt like reading Romeo & Juliet and The Great Gatsby for the first time again. She spun poetry unlike anything I had ever read (and is a great inspiration behind my prose). She reminded me that my writing isn’t just about the story . . . it’s about the language too. She inspired me to make sure every page was perfumed and lyrical, and before sending my novel out to readers, I did one big revision with her in mind. I wanted to impress myself, but I also wanted to impress her. She was the most talented writer I had ever met.
Giselle ended up being the first person to ever read my novel from start to finish (and in a single sitting too). For that, she holds a special place in my heart.
Then came my beta readers. Another person read it all in one sitting: Chloe. Then another. And another. And another. In total, five people read my entire novel in one whole sitting. I was speechless. I still am. Even my CPs flooded me with praise and compliments. I didn’t realize it at the time, but within two weeks, I thought that I was ready to query because of the successful response I had.
I believed in myself, and in my eyes, I thought my novel was perfect (especially because of the validation from readers). Looking back on it now, I’m not entirely sure I was ready. I think that perhaps I was overly confident. Maybe, I still am.
I started querying in July of this year. I cannot even speak to the amount of rejections I received between now and then. People told me I was ready. They said that agents would swoop me up immediately. In fact, I thought I’d be agented in about a week or so! Boy was I wrong. That’s not how things work at all.
This part of my journey is probably the darkest. I don’t think I was ever really prepared for it. Rejection, after rejection, after rejection came. I started to lose hope after only a month. I was confused. I didn’t understand what was wrong with my novel. I still don’t really understand it. LOVE LETTERS TO THE SEA is everything I ever wanted it to be. It’s everything I worked so hard at perfecting. It’s just like how I feel about Lana’s music: so perfectly me that nobody else could ever imitate it. I love my story. I think I always will.
I know I might appear to be doing well on social media to some of you despite all of the rejections. To people who don’t know the details of my life, I probably even seem successful. During SFFpit, I was the top tweet of the whole contest with over 300+ retweets and 7 requests (there were more, those were just the ones that I was interested in).
In the end, they were all rejections.
I never wanted anyone to know that. I’m so thankful for my following, I don’t want to let anyone down. But at the end of the day, I also want to be authentic with my audience. I want you to know that even I fail.
In March of 2020, I started with 200 followers on my Twitter account. By September of 2020, I’d grown my following to 1,000+ followers, which I am so thankful for. I know that number may not seem like a lot to some people, but as someone who has never had a rapidly growing following, it means the world to me. I love everyone who supports me more than they’ll ever know.
I see everything. I notice how many of you there are who tell me you can’t wait to see my book on the shelves. I see your praise and encouragement and support. I read all of your messages. I respond to every one, or at least I try. Sometimes I don’t feel like I deserve it. But I am so, so thankful for it all. It’s the reason I keep believing in myself, even in my darkest hours.
All I’ve ever wanted is to feel seen.
And I do. I feel seen by all of you. But I also feel like a fraud sometimes. The truth is, even I get rejections. A lot of them. More than you would think from the outside looking in. And yeah, it hurts. It hurts because I love my story. It hurts because I believe in myself. It hurts because you believe in me too.
So why aren’t I there yet?
I don’t think I’ve ever felt true heartbreak until now. Querying is the most vulnerable, brutal thing I’ve ever put myself through.
But it does get better. There are some good days too. You might think I’m just being dramatic since the present day marker of this journey actually ends on a very happy note. But that’s the thing about querying. It’s up and down, up and down. It’s unpredictable and scary and it takes a lot of guts to do. But enough on that.
This post is getting long, so I’m not going to go into detail about pitch contests. All you need to know is that I participated in a huge contest called PitMad, and to my suprise, I made it into the top 25 tweets of the contest, with 400+ retweets and about 8 agent requests.
And even more surprising, I f*cked up my queries on accident, and still received several fulls 3 days later (lol). My point is, maybe it’s not all about being “perfect”. Maybe it’s about having a story you love and believe in, and finding the right match for it. 90% of my rejections are based on my story “not being the right fit.” It doesn’t mean my story is bad. It just means I haven’t found the right person to represent me. I know I have a strong story that I love deeply, and that others love deeply too. It wasn’t until my fulls started coming in that I began believing in myself again. Thankfully, I have a group of wonderful people who never once stopped believing in me, even when my light dimmed out. (you know who you are ♡).
I don’t know what the future holds. I don’t even know if my fulls will turn into offers. All I can do is believe in myself, and know that my story is good enough for someone to want to represent it. And hey, if it doesn’t work out, I can always revise. I did it once before . . . in college, when I was still pushing myself to grow. Sometimes I forget that we never really stop growing. There is always room to evolve.
Maybe I was right to believe in my novel so fiercely. Maybe I was wrong.
Honestly, only time can tell. I have a hopeful feeling about my recent requests, and I am very excited about the agents viewing my work. But I also know how devastating querying is. I don’t want to let myself down. Falling from grace and reaching my lowest lows has taught me that I’m not perfect. In fact, there’s no such thing as perfect. I am constantly evolving, and this isn’t the end of my journey.
It’s just the beginning.
Love Always,
Kiana ♡

“Courtney Act says she’s enjoying an endless “hot girl summer”. Which, for those not initiated into American rap memes, basically means she’s having a damn good time.
“I’m kind of lubed up and ready for Mardi Gras, so to speak,” she says. As Australia’s most famous drag queen, active since the turn of the century, Courtney helped lead the mainstreaming of queer culture in this country along with figures such as Carlotta and Bob Downe.
But being a leader or pioneer doesn’t guarantee being comfortable in your own skin. Courtney says that until recently her understanding of sexuality and gender was actually quite limited. When she was performing, she was a woman, but when she stripped off her make-up, she went back to being Shane Jenek, a man.
“Although I did drag, my masculinity and femininity were compartmentalised in the binary,” Courtney says.
But over the past few years, as public discussion of gender, sexuality and identity has grown, she has discovered things are more complex than your genitals, clothes and hair.
“I think sometimes people think identity has something to do with the wrapping, but really it’s the gift underneath,” she says. “It’s about how you feel. For me, I definitely feel like I occupy masculine and feminine qualities.”
Courtney explores this journey in her pop-cabaret show, Fluid, showing this week at the Eternity Playhouse in Darlinghurst as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival. It’s a change of pace for her after focusing on television in recent years; first by winning Britain’s Celebrity Big Brother in 2018, then as the runner-up (with Joshua Keefe) on last year’s Australian Dancing with the Stars.
It’s also a far cry from her humble beginnings in the DIY world of drag, which has never been regarded as high art but remains a staple of gay bars and culture worldwide.
“There’s a lot less hot glue and sticky tape in this show, which makes it feel a lot more professional,” Courtney says of Fluid. “I don’t know if that will hold until opening night.”
Set to original music, Fluid was written by Shane and American comedian Brad Loekle. For the most part it’s a one-woman show, with some help from a ballroom dancer in the second half. (“It’d be weird doing a ballroom dance by yourself,” she says.)
The show acknowledges that, more than ever, people are being flooded with “ever-changing and flowing ideas of who we are, what we are and what we might become”.
This is something we should embrace, says Courtney. “We change our clothes every day – we change our hairstyles, we change our jobs. Everything is constantly in motion and constantly fluid. But we have this idea that our identities are fixed. When we look at our lives they’re actually a lot more fluid than we think.”
Courtney, or Shane, doesn’t identify as trans but has said that seeing more transgender people represented in the media was liberating and allowed her to explore her own doubts about gender. She’s previously been described as “gender fluid, pansexual and polyamorous”, although she no longer embraces those labels as she once did.
“They all work,” says Courtney, who prefers to identify as “just generally queer” these days. “It’s funny … so many of our groups identify so strongly with labels and they’re so important to us. I kind of feel less attached to those labels.”
She also understands why some people might feel confused, or even confronted, by the politics of queer identification. The acronym LGBTQIA+, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and others, has expanded over the years to the point that some critics deride it as “alphabet soup”. Even those who are part of the community can be intolerant.
“I get that LGBTIQA+ is a little cumbersome from a marketing standpoint,” says Courtney. “But if you find yourself with the time to complain and be confused by a few extra letters, then you’re one of the lucky ones. If there are people that get to understand themselves more because of a letter in an acronym, I’m all for it.”
“I definitely feel like I occupy masculine and feminine qualities.”
Courtney casts a sceptical eye over everything, including the rise of cancel culture, a predominantly left-wing phenomenon which argues that anyone who says or does something deemed to be racist, sexist, homophobic or in any way offensive should be called out, shamed and, preferably, silenced.
Lamenting the state of political discourse while appearing on the ABC’s Matter of Fact program last year, she said: “The volume’s too loud now and everybody’s yelling.” While history showed that people sometimes need to raise their voices, “when you actually sit down opposite someone and have a conversation with them, you get so much further”.
How, then, does Courtney view the debate over religious freedom that has raged ever since Australians voted to legalise same-sex marriage in 2017? She says it’s clear that sometimes people, especially older white males, perceive other people gaining rights as a threat to their own. She says religion can be a lost cause because it is, by definition, about faith rather than rational argument. Still, queer people have to make the effort to engage.
“The way to do that is to get people to picture themselves in other people’s experiences. That’s the only way you can foster that empathy.
“Rather than yelling aggressively back at the people trying to oppress us, I think the most important thing to do is to share our stories.”
Another thing you can do, of course, is march. This weekend, Mardi Gras culminates in the annual parade up Oxford Street, which will feature more than 200 floats and 10,000 marchers. For the first time, Courtney will co-host the coverage on SBS with comedians Joel Creasey and Zoe Coombs Marr, and Studio 10 presenter Narelda Jacobs.
She had something of a practice run hosting the coverage on Foxtel some years ago. “I saw a clip of it the other day,” she says. “And I’m definitely hoping to redeem myself.”
As a character, Courtney has been on the gay scene for about 20 years. The person behind the facade, Shane, turned 38 last week. He grew up in Brisbane and remembers watching the parade on television as a teenager in the 1990s, huddled up close to the TV so he could quickly switch it off if his parents came downstairs.
Shane came to Sydney when he was 18 and attended his first Mardi Gras. “I just remember it was such a melting pot of people,” he says. “It was the first time I really understood what a community was: that there were all these different parts, and we all faced different challenges and struggles.”
But even then, Shane says he failed to really comprehend about what Mardi Gras was all about. Just like many heterosexual critics over the years, as a young man he gawked at the giant dancing penises, fetish-wear and nudity and wondered: why?
“I remember thinking: why can’t they just be normal?” Shane says. “Have your parade, but why does it have to be about sex and penises? Because I had shame about all of those things. I realise now that the parade’s brash display of sexuality liberates the shame … it’s a really radical way to shake people and say there’s nothing wrong with sexuality – not just homosexuality but sexuality in general.”
The queer community has given Shane a lot: acceptance, identity, a career and fame. It has taken him to Los Angeles, where he was based for some years until 2018, and now to his new home in London.
Love, on the other hand, remains elusive. He is “on the rebound” at the moment, though eternally optimistic. “It’s Mardi Gras time, it’s summer in Sydney, I think this is the perfect time to be single. Maybe I’ll find love under a disco ball at the after-party.”
Incredibly, at 38, Shane is about to attend his first ever wedding, straight or gay – his friend Tim is marrying his partner Ben. It is set to be a baptism of fire. “They have asked my ex-boyfriend and me to give the best man’s speech together, which could be slightly sadistic,” he says.
Shane is still adjusting to the relatively new world of same-sex marriage. It’s not for everyone – many queers still think of it as a conservative and unnecessary institution – but it’s growing on him. “Weirdly, seeing all these people get married, I feel like my cold heart has melted a bit,” he says. “I think there’s something really beautiful about marriage.”
It’s a reminder of why events like the Mardi Gras are still so important – a celebration of diversity at the same time as the old divisions between straight and gay are knocked down. As well as marriage, this can manifest in small shifts, like the politics of Bondi Beach.
“I was at North Bondi on Saturday [and] it was surprisingly unlike North Bondi,” Shane says. “It was all families and those banana umbrella things. I was like, ‘Oh, I remember when this used to be [gay nightclub] ARQ, but with more light.’"
“I guess that’s the progress we fought for – the families are happy occupying the gay beaches now.”

SBS’s Mardi Gras broadcast airs live from 7.30pm on February 29. Fluid will return for a tour of Australia and NZ in spring.
This article appears in Sunday Life magazine within the Sun-Herald and the Sunday Age on sale February 23.”

A/N: Heyyy look who finally finished a GG fic, and it’s not even one I had planned. This is set post S6 finale. A little NJBC angst. Enjoy!
the bottles always there (when I have nowhere else to turn)
He’s in Sydney when he hears news of Serena’s engagement.
It doesn’t come as a surprise but it still stings in a way that it shouldn’t. It’s been years since they dated and almost six months since he’s even seen her.
Chuck is the one that breaks the news, tells Nate that him and Blair were asked to host the event but he wanted to make sure Nate wouldn’t have a problem with it. He’s never been able to hide his feelings from his best friend and while it’s going to hurt like hell to watch the woman he’s been in love with for most of his life marry someone else, he’s not going to stand in her way of happiness. He leaves his phone in the room, tells himself he’s just not responding because of the time difference, and makes his way to the elevator.
He plants himself down on a barstool in the hotel bar, orders a beer and tells the bartender to keep them coming.
“Tough night?” She asks in a light Australian accent, a pretty brunette that looks nothing like Serena and for that he’s eternally grateful.
“The love of my life is getting married,” he says and raises the bottle, tips it in her direction before taking a long pull. She smiles sadly at him, pulls a shot glass from under the counter and fills it up with vodka.
“I think you need this. On the house, o’course.”
He thanks her, downing the shot without a chaser. It’s not like him to drink away his problems, he’s seen enough of that in his lifetime to curb the cravings but right now this bottle in this bar in this country is the only thing keeping him sane.
“Does she know?”
Nate looks up from where he’s peeling the label off his third bottle. “Who?” It’s a dumb question but he asks it anyway.
“The woman you love. Does she know how you feel?”
He shrugs, finishes off the bottle with one last swing and sets it down harder than he needs to on the bar. “Doesn’t matter. She made her choice a long time ago.”
He doesn’t know how he makes it back to his room in one piece.
When he wakes up his shoes are still on, his suit pants rumpled and his phone is lying next to him on the bed. He scrambles for it, hoping to God he didn’t drunk dial or text Serena in his intoxicated state.
There’s only one outgoing message but it’s to Chuck, he realizes with relief. Until he reads it and sees that it’s past the point of no return.
It’s okay with me. Send her my love.
***
It’s an easy routine for him to fall into, one of the doting husband and father.
Henry is a great kid, already so smart and a perfect mix of both of his parents. When Chuck looks into the eyes of his son he sees Blair’s spirit and tenacity, but also her kindness and compassion. And, if judging by the outfit his son is currently wearing, he got his sense of fashion from his father. It’s barely eight am and yet his son is already dressed in black slacks, a white cashmere sweater and a pair of Italian loafers.
“Daddy!” Henry calls happily when he runs in and flings himself at Chuck, who’s reading the Post at their kitchen table. They try to spend as much time at home as they can, especially in the mornings and at bedtime. It’s not easy when they are both running their own companies but it’s worth it, to see his family every morning when he wakes up and every night before he falls asleep.
“Good morning, Henry. Did you sleep well?”
Henry widens his eyes and his arms at the same time. “Like a log, Dad. You know like those really big ones down at the duck pond!”
Chuck laughs, drops a kiss to his son’s head and looks up when his wife comes into the room. The smile drops from his face when he sees her brown eyes glistening with tears.
“Dorota,” he calls and the woman bustles in. “Can you please keep an eye on Henry for a moment?”
“Of course, Mister Chuck.”
Blair doesn’t say anything, just lets Chuck take her hand and lead her into the living room, which is enough on its own to completely freak him out.
“Blair, what’s wrong?” He asks when they are alone and she sighs, sits down on the couch and pats the space next to him. “You’re kind of scaring me here. Please tell me what’s going on.” He finally sits and she pulls his hand onto her lap.
“I’m not sure how to tell you this,” she says softly. “I just got off the phone with Dr. Brown. He said that the results of my fertility tests aren’t good. The chances of us having another baby without help are slim to none.”
It’s been something they have talked about since Henry was a year old, when to give him a brother or a sister. At first they took the whatever happens, happens approach. When Henry was three they decided to actually try but it’s been almost three years and still no luck.
“Okay,” he says, thinking of the right way to navigate the conversation. “We have all of the resources we need, Blair. If we need help, we’ll find a way. Hell, we can adopt. This isn’t the end of anything.”
Her pretty brown eyes are sparkling with tears when she looks up at him. “Then why does it feel like it is?”
Chuck reaches for her hand but she shakes her head, tells him that she just needs to be alone for a little while, and leaves him by himself in the living room.
He blows off his lunch with Lily, makes up an excuse that he doesn’t think makes sense and promises her that he’ll make it up to her. Instead he goes home, pours two fingers of scotch and sits behind the desk in his office. When his glass is empty he fills it up again, and then again, and finally once more.
There’s no way he’s going to make it to any of his meetings for the rest of the day so he texts his assistant, asks him to move everything until tomorrow, and tosses his phone on his desk.
It’s been a long time since he’s dulled the pain of something like this but right now it feels fitting. He’s a good father and a good husband, he knows this. But right now he feels like the old Chuck. Powerful but powerless. Unable to give the woman he loves everything her heart desires.
So he sits in the dark like he would have before, lets the sun go down and drowns his pain the only way he remembers how.

Her marriage ends only two short years after it begins.
If she’s being honest with herself, she should have seen it coming. Dan was a social climber in disguise, always looking for a way in and a step up. The start of the marriage was like a dream, parties and events every weekend. A handsome man on her arm that she was proud to call her husband.
But then one day it changed. He cared more about getting ahead than he did about their relationship. It made her question everything. Was he only with her because of who she was and her status on the Upper East Side? Did he love her or the idea of her?
Why did she marry someone that spent years tearing her down for the world to see?
Blair is the first person she tells and she can see the look of relief on her best friend’s face, even though she’s trying to be supportive.
“I’m so sorry, S.” Blair rests her hand on her growing baby bump. Serena feels like a divorce is small potatoes compared to the year Blair and Chuck have had but then thinks, no, that’s not fair. Her problems are just as valid, if not more, because they are hers.
“I am too,” Serena says, curling her legs up underneath her. “I really wanted the first time I got married to be the only time.”
“Hey, don’t knock second marriages,” Blair jokes. “Sometimes it’s for the best.”
Later that night, when she’s alone in her suite at the Empire, she pours a glass of wine and sits down next to a window looking out over the city.
She’s mourning but she’s not sure exactly which Dan she misses the most. Her partner, who was supposed to be her equal in everything. Her husband, who looked good in the photographs lining their fireplace mantle. Her friend, the one that told her time and time again that her happiness meant everything to him.
The bottle of wine doesn’t last longer than an hour and then she’s on the phone with room service. They tell her that Mr. Bass has given her carte blanche to order whatever she wants and she laughs quietly to herself, orders a three hundred dollar bottle of champagne, and leaves a tip she knows he can afford.
If she has to drink away her problems she may as well do it in style.
***
Motherhood is the most rewarding job she’s ever had.
Henry was a dream child, now a child of twelve with the wisdom of someone much older. Her pregnancy happened quickly and the following years with him were easy and carefree, up until he decided to grow up and become a preteen.
It never occurred to her that things might not go as smoothly the second time around.
After months of expensive invitro, they finally conceived. When the doctor told them they were having a little girl Blair swore her heart was going to burst from her chest. Audrey, named after her idol of course, was born happy and healthy right on time.
Now she’s four and runs their entire household. The girl has Chuck wrapped around her dainty little pinky, just like Blair always knew a daughter would. She has a penchant for pink princess dresses, which Blair indulges probably more than she should.
“Mom!”
Henry calls to her from his bedroom and she rolls her eyes, because he’s a great kid but sometimes he’s a little too spoiled for his own good.
“Henry,” she sighs as she pushes open his bedroom door. “How many times do I have to tell you not to scream at me from the other room? Sending a text would be less rude.”
Her son rolls his eyes and she cocks an eyebrow. “Sorry, mom. I just need you to sign this permission form.”
“Permission form for what?”
She watches in amusement as he visibly stops himself from giving her another eye roll. “The Paris trip, remember? My class is going for two weeks over summer break.”
He hands her the paper and she skims it, remembering only vaguely him asking about this. “Does your father know about this?”
“Duh,” he says and she scolds him. “Sorry, yes. Dad knows and he said he doesn’t care if you say it’s okay.”
Blair sighs and signs it, hands it over to him so he can put it in his book bag for the next day. She’s not the biggest fan of her son traveling overseas without them but it’s not as if four of his grandparents aren’t already there.
Three weeks later they are sending their son off to Europe, not for the first time but for the first time without them. Blair sniffles, holds her hands to her heart and Chuck laughs and presses a kiss to her temple.
“Blair, he’s going to be fine.”
“I know that,” she snaps. “We’ve never spent this much time away from him. Aren’t you the smallest bit sad about it?”
His hand tightens slightly on her shoulder. “Of course. He’s my son, I don’t want him an ocean away. But he’s growing up and we have to let him do it.”
Blair sighs, buries her face in her husband’s suit jacket. “I hate it when you make sense.”
A few hours later they are sitting at the Empire bar when Nate and Serena walk in holding hands. Blair smiles sadly at them, having called them to come commiserate the first night of Henry’s trip.
“You two look miserable,” Nate says with a chuckle, bending down to kiss Blair’s cheek. “You know he’s only going to be gone for two weeks, right?”
“Shut up,” Blair says, motioning for the bartender to bring her another mint julep. “I’m going to drown my sorrows and pretend like my son isn’t having the time of his life in my favorite city without his mother.”
“Aww,” Serena says, wrapping her arm around Blair’s shoulders. “You’re such a good mommy, B. I miss him already too.”
Chuck claps his hands once to get everyone’s attention. “Hey! Can we stop sitting around like a bunch of sad assholes and just drink? I feel this may be the only way to get my wife out of her slump and I, for one, would like to get laid tonight.”
Everyone laughs when Blair hits him in the arm but she’s thankful for him trying to lighten the mood.
They sit and drink for hours, Blair stopping to sniffle only a few times. Serena wipes the tears from her cheeks and promises her that Henry will be just fine.
The drinks help wash away her worry but it’s not what calms her down and assuages her fears. It’s the moments like these with her best friends, the people she loves most in the world, that makes her raise a glass in a toast.
“To us,” she says. “May we always have each other for the good times and the bad.”
Everyone raises their glasses and meets in the middle.
“To us.”

Let’s Dance {Michael Clifford}
There were not many people that Michael trusted with his hair; Lou Teasdale and himself were the only two for a long time until he met the woman he was marrying in less than twenty-four hours. She had come into his life like a goddamn hurricane and turned it upside down from everything he knew in the best way possible. One of the first things she had addressed was the dryness of his hair and how brittle it got when he stripped the off-the-wall colors in order to change it. Now he was never without coconut oil in his bag on the road and their medicine cabinet at home was an amalgamation of different brands of the miracle substance.
Naturally, this meant that Michael was spending his last night of being an unmarried man with his hair shiny and slick from the oil and wrapped up in a towel (like she had taught him) to keep the heat in. He wanted to have his hair looking smart for his bride the next day.
“I should take a picture of you and put it on Instagram,” Calum chuckled from the loveseat across from him. “I’m sure the fans would just eat this up!”
Michael shrugged. “They’ve seen me looking a hell of a lot weirder, mate.”
Calum could only laugh at his friend as they both began scrolling through their respective Twitter feeds, the silence that followed comforting. It reminded Michael of when they were younger and hanging out after school in his bedroom, ignoring their homework in favor of searching dumb YouTube videos in each other’s presence.
“Is it weird knowing you’re getting married tomorrow?” Calum asked, breaking the silence some time later as his best friend’s fiancé popped up in his feed saying how she needed her beauty rest for the next day.
“Kinda,” Michael admitted as he set his phone to the side. “I mean, I don’t think it’s weird to know that I’m marrying her because she’s the only person I’ve ever thought about marrying for real. She’s it and I know it. It’s weird to think that I’m getting married in general though. Like, I’m still just some punk ass kid from Sydney who dropped out of school to be in a band. I always thought that adults were the ones who got married and I guess I don’t feel like an adult. I feel like we’re just two kids who know we’re it for each other. Does that make sense?”
The bassist nodded with a smile on his lips. He was happy that one of his oldest friends was about to move forward in his life with the woman who helped bring out his best. Michael deserved to be happy.

‘The coconut oil last night was a good decision,’ Michael thought as he checked himself in the mirror one last time. His hair looked healthy and bright. He was clean-shaven and his suit looked really good if he did say so himself.
He was ready to be married.
He chuckled to himself as the realization hit him and he turned his back on the mirror to exit the small powder room attached to the office where his groomsmen were gathered. Michael surveyed them like a general, giving each of them a onceover just to be sure they were completely dressed and ready.
“Stop biting your lip,” Ashton chastised him. “If she walks down that aisle only to find you with a bloody lip she’ll kill you before you get the chance to say ‘I do.’”
Michael hadn’t even realized that he’d been biting his lip, but he composed himself quickly knowing that the drummer was right.
Luke rested a hand on his shoulder. “We gotta get out there. You ready, mate?”
Taking a deep breath, Michael nodded. He waited until all of his groomsmen had filed out the door before following behind them, breaking off to head to the front of the church while they headed back towards the bridal room.
When he walked out to take his place to the left of the officiant, his eyes scanned the crowd. It was amazing to see all the people from his life and her life that wanted to be here to see them make it their life. He immediately caught sight of his parents across from hers in the front two rows. He smiled when he spotted John Feldmann and his family next to the Madden brothers and their families (Michael never thought Nicole Richie or Cameron Diaz would be at his wedding but some things in life are really weird). Alex and Lisa Gaskarth were behind them—Alex having a protective hand on the tiny bump under Lisa’s dress—with the other members of All Time Low close by.
“It’s wonderful to look out and see all those who love you, isn’t it?” the officiant asked, catching the groom’s attention. Michael could only nod because he thought if he opened his mouth all that would come out would be a tiny squeak. He was nervous that something would go wrong like that ridiculous miniseries she had made him watch when they first got together, but deep down he knew that he was just anxious because this was a really fucking important day and he would die of embarrassment if he messed it up somehow.
After what felt like an eternity to Michael, the woman across the way from him began to play a light processional on the organ and the doors at the back of the church opened.
Ashton and her youngest sister entered first, the height difference not as comical as it was the night before at the rehearsal since this time she had on her heels. Both of them smiled as cameras flashed on either side of them. Ashton being used to it, was calm as could be—happy actually, to be photographed doing something important instead of buying a cup of coffee. Her sister was beaming, happy to have a tiny slice of the attention on her oldest sister’s big day.
Next came Luke and her other sister, just a few years younger than her. Unlike Ashton and her youngest sister, those two were still as awkward as the night before. While Luke was used to the flashing of the cameras and having a lot of eyes on him, he wasn’t used to it with a lanky girl in heels clinging to his arm for dear life. Her poor sister looked like a deer caught in the headlights as she cautiously walked forward with Luke.
As best man, Calum entered next with the maid of honor, her best friend, on his arm. They walked together with ease, used to all of the cameras flashing every time they went out. Dating a rockstar made her best friend adjust to the attention quickly and it showed as they glided arm-in-arm down the aisle with confidence. Each of them gave a reassuring smile to Michael as they reached the front and parted ways to go to their respective positions.
The organ music changed to the wedding march then, and everyone rose from their seats to get a good look at the bride as she made her grand entrance. Having chosen to walk alone, she moved in a perfect line down the center of the aisle as everyone around her scrambled to get a picture. She kept her gaze forward and a small smile on her perfectly painted lips.
Michael was in awe as he watched her grow closer, more tiny details catching his attention. He took in the sparkle of the beading on her dress as it caught the bright church lights and the way it matched the sparkle of her earrings perfectly. On her left wrist he spied the bracelet he got her for their first Christmas together, the delicate silver loops intertwined just north of the engagement ring she had been wearing proudly for almost a year.
It wasn’t until she was directly in front of him that he noticed the aged medallion around her neck, St. Christopher’s likeness surrounded by a prayer for protection. The family heirloom that her mother kept in a display case in the den of their home was an interesting sight for Michael. He had never seen it outside the case in all the time they were together.
He flicked his eyes from the medallion up to her eyes as he reached his hand out to help her up the stairs separating them from the officiant.
“You’re beautiful,” he whispered as they climbed the stairs together.

As great as it was to actually marry her, Michael was excited for the reception. He knew parties between their two families were fun but now they were adding in the rest of the band and numerous other musicians who were going to take full advantage of the bar. There was no better recipe for a party in his opinion.
After getting their pictures taken for what felt like an eternity, they were able to make their way to the reception with the rest of the wedding party. They didn’t wait long before the groomsmen and bridesmaids entered the expansive ballroom, followed by the newlyweds who had decided to enter the reception to the “Imperial March” from Star Wars.
Toasts were made by her best friend, father, and each of Michael’s band members which segued into the quick serving of dinner to the guests. Everyone ate and chatted merrily as the DJ played classic rock ballads from REO Speedwagon and Led Zeppelin. Laughter flowed as freely as the drinks from the bar when the bride and groom cut the cake, the pair smiling just long enough for the photographer to snap a sweet picture before smashing slices into each other’s mouths.
Their first dance as husband and wife was slow, close, and intimate- they swayed together effortlessly. The soft chords of the song they danced to blurred Michael’s gaze into tunnel vision which led directly to her smiling face and wide, excited eyes. Even when their first dance ended and every other importance dance ensued, he couldn’t focus completely on anything except her and the pure joy on her face.
The joy escalated as the night wore on. Laughter loud and sweet as church bells poured from her mouth when he went under her dress for the garter and when she threw the bouquet, her dimples popped out from her flushed cheeks as every guest lined up to take their turn to dance with the bride (after taking a quick tequila shot, of course), and happy tears gleamed at the corners of her eyes as she swayed with Michael to the last song of the night, whispering to him how she couldn’t wait to have their first breakfast together as The Clifford’s.
“In honor of it, I won’t even eat scrambled eggs,” she giggled, knowing he hated eggs.
Michael beamed. “I love you, Mrs. Clifford.”
