A new chapter at last. It's a rewarding one. <3

The fifth time Desi was held in Em’s arms, she was shaking.

“She nearly found them. She almost had them. Oh god. Oh god, what would she’ve done?”

“But she didn’t. They are safe, Desi. Devin and Dell are alive and safe.”

He sat, holding her in his arms. Rocking her and stroking her hair as she tettered on the edge of tears. They were in an abandoned building, on the edge of Cannibal’s Row, the closest possible place to the Crimson Army’s gates. This had long been their meeting spot, when they were looking for a reprieve of their family. A perfect spot for a grandmother induced panic.

She tucked her head into his chest, muffling the sobs. Her hands clutched his shirt, holding on as he was the one thing keeping her stable. His arms were wrapped around her, keeping her upright and stroking the back of her head. Both of their eyes were shut, reliving family memories. 

Eventually Desi calms down, hands loosening as she keeps her head tucked in.

“No one is dying tonight. Not me or you. Not Dell. Not Devin. No one.”

She nods, slowly pulling away. Her eyes, red and puffy, couldn’t raise from the floor. Hands slid into her lap, fingering an imaginary rosary. Every part of her was scared, trembling at the idea that something could happen to her babies. The only reason she was away from them right now was because they were hidden and being watched over by Anthony.

Em offered his hand, rubbing her knuckles when she accepted. Nothing could make it better right now. The danger was always present. A heavy weight lurking in the back of the mind. Family always posed the most danger, they knew where to hit hardest.

He thought about his relationship with Desi. They had been close for a little over a year now and had understood each other since their first meeting a year and a half ago. Did he dare trust her with his best kept secrets? With his heart?

He took a deep breath.

“Eva.”

Desi looked up, shocked. The weight of what this meant didn’t miss her. 

“Her name is Eva. And mine is Emmerich. Prince Emmerich Metterich of the Red Court.”
