Fast X is................ surprisingly not terrible
I watched Fast X this weekend, with a lot of apprehension. I am a fan of this franchise overall, having enjoyed almost all the movies to some extent or another, be it as a B movie guilty pleasure, point break rip off, or balls to walls bananas action movie. From Fast Five to Furious 7 is where the series peaked in my opinion. I think they managed to blend action, humor, and surprising amounts of heart. Since Paul Walker's demise though, the series has lot some of that heart. I think tilting far too much into Dom as a messiah of sorts who can pull of ridiculous superheroics. The Fate of the Furious was meh, but still had Johnson and Statham who provided a lot of the movie's best scenes. F9 is where the series came off the rails for me. I couldn't even enjoy it on a guilty pleasure level. So I was apprehensive about this film, but it turned out to be....... not bad.
Lets be clear, this isn't a good film. It isn't even really a complete film. Its either half a story or a third of a story, depending on whether this becomes a trilogy or not. But it tones down the action from jump the shark stuff of F9 to more palatable bonkers stuff from the previous 4 films. There is ridiculous mayhem in this movie, but not unpalatably so. The thing is that it is only part of a story. It isn't like Infinity War, which felt like a conclusive end to Thanos' mission. I genuinely feels abruptly cut on a big cliffhanger. There are like 4 separate story tracks that are happening simultaneously and there are cameos thrown in left, right, and center. Statham shows up for an abrupt action scene and then leaves, Helen Mirren shows up for one scene, Brie Larson has like 4 scenes total, Charlize Theron has like 3-4 scenes total. On top of that we have Alan Ritchson who joins the mix, with a returning cameo from Scott Eastwood. Jordana Brewster has like 1-2 scenes, and we also have Elena's sister inexplicably. So it is overwhelming and exhausting to keep track of all these characters, with the main cast also getting reduced screen time as a result. But the action sequences are great. I never got bored of the movie, which did happen with F9. And on top of that is Jason Momoa, who is the lifeblood of this film. He clearly knows the film he's in and he's playing to the gallery completely and he adds an additional boost of energy to the film. Thankfully, he has a fair amount of screen time and also has some genuine menace, beneath the theatrics. I'll be honest, at this point, Dom is probably my least favorite character. Vin Diesel plays him a bit too self-seriously and mumbles through his dialogue. He's better here than he was in the last 2 films, but he also has less screen time comparatively, due to the split focus. John Cena is surprisingly good here, this time wisely playing to his strengths. He is much more palatable as uncle goofball, who is a badass, then as the vengeful villain he was in the previous movie. The scenes with him and little B are pretty fun. They seemingly kill him off, but I hope he is alive. Given how Han and Giselle are inexplicably alive, I wouldn't it past Mr. Nobody to come out of nowhere and having saved him. The track with Han, Roman, Tej, and Ramsey kind of flounders around a bit because it literally only consists of them bickering and trying to get to a location. The stuff with Letty and Cipher is fairly fun. The fight scene between the two of them is a highlight of the movie.
Anyways, the performances are all on par. All the returning cast members know their individual roles quite well. Jason Momoa is a clear standout in the cast. Seeing Charlize Theron kick some ass in her brief role is pretty great. I do think this film overall raised my enthusiasm for the next film, but it is an overwhelming watch. It is definitely not going to convert anyone to a fan, but if anyone likes these movies, they will continue to enjoy this one. The mid credit scene, signaling Hobbs' return is pretty cool. Louis Letterier does a solid job with the action. A 6/10.

The Mosley Review: Fast X
Tumblr media
By now we know what to expect from the Fast franchise. We expect it to be entertaining while absolutely physically impossible for the majority of the stunts and action sequences on screen to practically be done. I believe the last time anything on screen was particularly grounded in reality was Fast Five and then it officially started going off the rails with Furious 7. At this point this franchise has gone from the classic street racing of exotic and flashy custom cars to now international special operations. This "family" should just honestly just open up their own private security or private military company. Fast 9 truly went too far in trying to deliver a spy thriller that was truly too much and teetered on the level of a Michael Bay film. Luckily, this film learned from the mistakes of that film and actually tried to focus on a story. The insane action and ridiculous amount of family quotes are there, but this was dare I say, more toned down than the last few entries of the franchise. The cast of characters continues to grow and some were fun and some others felt shoved in for no reason. Also, there is an abundance of magic that happens in this film where somehow a character just appears without any explanation or origin.
Tumblr media
Like I said the cast keeps growing in these films so I'm just gonna highlight the ones that actually stood out. Vin Diesel continues to lead the franchise as Dominic Toretto and I liked that he starts to actually show some worry this time around. He takes to the role of fatherhood very well in a number of scenes, but he can't help himself and somehow gets back in the action. Michelle Rodriguez is always fun and as Letty, she gets to have her moments to kick ass in the last half of the film. Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Nathalie Emmanuel return as the fun hacker trio Tej, Roman Pearce, Ramsey and they continue to have the best chemistry in the more comedic scenes. Sung Kang returns as Han and he doesn't really have much to do until he finally faces off with Jason Statham's character, Deckard Shaw. Its not the fight we dreamed of, but a decent fight and eventual team up.  John Cena returns as Dom's brother Jakob and he is a far step away from the tough and stoic nature he was from the previous film. He was still fun to watch though and did what he does best in the action and comedic set pieces. Alan Ritchson was so much fun and excellent as the new Mr. Nobody's Agency leader, Aimes. He isn't as predictable as he may seem and he fits in the fold of the franchise so well. Brie Larson was good as the daughter of Mr. Nobody, Tess. She reminded me why I like her as an actress and she was definitely having fun throughout the film. Charlize Theron returns as the fun and villainous vixen Cypher. She continues that cunning and quiet sinister charm to her personality and I loved that she wasn't the only villain on the roster. Jason Mamoa was a complete maniac of a rockstar as Dante Reyes. If there was ever a villain that felt shoe horned, but then evolved into something memorable, he would be the very definition. He is flamboyant yet unpredictable and vicious in his devilishly playful nature. I loved that he played mind games with Dom and others as his words always had multiple meaning. He is too good for this franchise and he lets you know it with all the genuine fun he is having.
Tumblr media
The score by the great Brian Tyler keeps the adrenaline pumping in all the action scenes and brings back all the familiar themes he created throughout the series. The action in this film is on par with the absolutely ridiculous and over the top nature this franchise has turned into. Even with that said, I couldn't help but notice that there was an actual effort to tone it down this time. Yeah sure you have the pinball machine sequence in Italy and then the Dam sequence, but for the most part, it was actually believable. I think the team behind these films realized the problem and are slowly going back to basics maybe. There was an actual race in this film and it was the most tension fueled race I've seen in this franchise since the fourth film. There are so many moments where people just show up out of nowhere and the pacing of this entry was very quick which was a plus. Overall, I found this entry to be easily entertaining and without the amount of idiocracy of F9. There is a character that returns and you'll ask yourself how and I hope in Fast 11 they actually explain it instead of the nonsensical way they did with Han. Do stick around for the mid credit scene that has a surprise, but with the launching point of the story of Fast Five, you'll know who it is immediately. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

FAST X | Official Trailer 2
Synopsis
Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto  and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever.
In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante, witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.
Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

Fast X    [trailer]
Dom Toretto and his family are targeted by the vengeful son of drug kingpin Hernan Reyes.
A flamboyant Jason Momoa provides some much needed fun and energy, countering the hard to bear wooden "acting" of Vin Diesel. Brie Larson and John Cena are also on the plus side.
The incessant preaching about family continues to annoy. I wonder if a cut without all that talk and the shoe-horned "good dad" scenes would find an audience.
Not that it matters, the plot is silly with the story ending in a cheap-looking CGI blaze.
