HEADCANON : a study in unique bloodlines

as myrddin wyltt’s progeny, jonathan possesses formidable abilities and highly potent blood. myrddin is an ancient vampire, born of morrigan - the red queen. it comes as no surprise that myrddin’s power would pass on to his children. however, he seems to be very particular about who he chooses to turn to become his champion. we do not know all of his children, but king arthur and jonathan are two examples. it isn’t far fetched to say that he chooses his champions because on the bloodline of their family, picking those who are strong and loyal and will not back down from a fight.

this could be why the reids have such unique abilities after being turned.

jonathan has a myriad of powers that make him a formidable foe (from abyss to class to blood spear). mary can manipulate blood expelled from her body and shape it into explosive pustules. emelyne, even as a skal, can project the shadows of her dead children to fight alongside her. these abilities are unique to the reids and make them extremely difficult to counter. myrddin didn’t just choose jonathan because he as an individual was suitable for the task, but also because he came from a family whose blood held a power of its own.

INFORMATION: Orianna appeared to be very wealthy and a philanthropist, owning an orphanage and an estate, where at the latter she hosted lavish parties for artists, one of which Geralt and Anna Henrietta attended in disguise. She also paid a good deal of money to acquire the Heart of Toussaint, an heirloom that had been passed down through Toussaint's royal family but was lost when the last one to inherit it, Princess Sylvia Anna, was exiled from the kingdom. Orianna also appeared to be acquainted with Dettlaff and Regis, where she stated the latter as her friend from the past.

However, her generosity with owning an orphanage turned out to have more sinister motives. Like many vampires, Orianna had a craving for blood but she preferred children's blood and periodically fed off the children there to satisfy her craving, though she did not kill them.

EARLY LIFE: Mary was born to Emelyne Reid and Aubrey Reid, and lived in the Reid family's mansion in West End, London. She was close with her older brother Jonathan. In 1908, her father inexplicably disappeared.

In her adult life, she was married and later gave birth to a son. However, her happiness was quickly stripped away when her husband, Dylan[1], was killed in France during the war; her young child later died from Spanish flu. Mary's only comfort was the hope that her brother would return from the front, and eventually she did receive word that he would come home to London.

Funeral

Following her death, she was buried in a quarantined graveyard outside of the whitechapel district. Her mother and their manservant, Avery, attended while Father Joseph oversaw her burial. After the funeral proceedings were completed, Reid visited Father Joseph at the Saint Mary's Church, where he openly admitted that he was responsible for her death.

Resurrection

Unknown to Jonathan or anyone else, Mary was reborn as a vampire, as a result of getting Jonathan's vampire blood on her lips shortly after being embraced. She awoke inside her coffin, digging herself out of her grave with literal tooth and nail. Horrified and angry by what she had become, and what Jonathan had done to her, Mary sought revenge. She started to stalk her brother through Whitechapel and into the East End Docks. She also began to leave a trail of victims across London, feeding and growing in power.

Eventually, Mary attracted Jonathan's attention by tossing a corpse from the roof of Sean Hampton's night shelter, leaving a brooch belonging to her mother in the hands of the dead man. Jonathan goes to the address in the dead man's wallet, and follows a blood trail; he finds the corpse of a woman dragged down the street, killed by a vampire, and tied to a tree. Jonathan recognises the flower that his mother had put on Mary's coffin, believing that someone is targeting his family. Mary, watching Jonathan from above, goads him into following her. Jonathan, not realising who it is, chases her to Stonebridge cemetery.

VAMPIRISM: When Jonathan finds Vicar Larrabee near Mary's grave, Mary reveals herself, accompanied by a mesmerized Emelyne Reid. Mary claims to have gathered them all together for a "family reunion," making her mother speak on command. Jonathan, stunned and lost for words, tries to explain but Mary mocks and scorns him, telling him she has "a hole in her chest, and it needs to breathe." Mary reminisces about her past grief, the deaths of her husband and child, and her search for Jonathan when he disappeared. She tells Jonathan of her brief happiness at finding him at the mass grave, and then her experience of digging herself out of her coffin, spitting on her grave. Jonathan tries to apologize, explaining he only recognized her after draining her blood, and that he had tried to kill himself.

HEADCANON : a study in haunted memories

after her second resurrection, mary is done with london. the city holds too many memories for her, too many gravestones, and she leaves without looking back. she makes her way through europe and her path is a bloody one. she sustains herself on any human she can get her hands on. she does not discriminate - men, women and even children fall to her hunger. she becomes a nightmare, a story parents tell to their children to invoke fear and she does not care. as long as it gets her away from the rotten city that had taken so much from her, she is content to be a thing of nightmares.

her travels eventually lead her to america and that is where she settles in her new life. mary does not return to london until 2018, a hundred years later. she does not really know what provokes it - perhaps it’s the mark of the century or simply an incessant curiosity she can’t seem to shake.

she flies there and lands in an unfamiliar bustle of human life. the nights are electric and the city does not sleep like it used to. she finds comfort in that, knowing she is not the only creature of the dark. her first stop is west end in search of her family’s home. not surprising, it was demolished and replaced by a row of similarly designed homes. no trace of the reid family exists there anymore, save for the graveyard.

she finds her mother’s grave there, cracked and worn by time. she takes time to tend to it and revive it until “EMELYNE REID, 1853-1919” can be read on the stone. she does the same for her husband’s grave and her son’s, whose were almost lost to the overgrowth. for her brother there is no grave. and her own had been replaced by other bodies long ago. she stays in london for some time and finds it no longer haunts her as it did so long ago. in fact, she’s even eager to explore and taste what london has to offer.

what she does not realize is london has not forgotten mary reid. and old eyes lurk in the dark. waiting.

EARLY LIFE: In his younger years, Regis had developed some bad habits to fit in with the rest of his kind. While drinking blood wasn't necessary for higher vampires, it was seen similar in substance to alcohol: if one didn't drink they were considered lame. So under peer pressure he began to partake in it and soon found he was no longer shy around vampire women when he was "under the influence". However, his habit got worse and worse to the point he'd spend several nights away before returning to the crypt and just a drop of blood would make him lose control and eventually began to go solo, not caring about any friends going with him or not. He later settled down with a vampire female but not for long as she soon left, and in his grief he dove further into his drinking habit.

It all came to a head, though, when one night he was sent out by some of the boys to fetch some blood. Flying under the influence, he missed his target and instead smashed into the village's well and the villagers nearly killed him, chopping his head off, stabbing him with stakes, and pouring holy water on him before burying him. Fortunately, none of this could actually kill him but, in no condition to move anytime soon, he spent the next 50 years regenerating underground, giving him time to think on his behavior and ultimately he decided to not drink again. EARLY LIFE: Jonathan Reid, the son of Emelyne Reid, Mary Reid's older brother. His father, Aubrey Reid, abandoned the family when he was a child, but then left a letter for his son with their butler, telling him to deliver it to him on his 35th birthday. In these letters, dated April 4, 1908, Aubrey Reid writes to his son, Jonathan, explaining his sudden and unspoken departure from their family. Aubrey shares his deep love for Jonathan, his sister Mary, and their mother Emelyne, and his pride in Jonathan’s pursuit of a medical career, particularly in pioneering blood transfusions. Each letter contains clues for Jonathan to find the next message and ultimately uncover why his father left. In the first letter, Aubrey reveals he has crafted a puzzle for Jonathan to solve if he wants to understand why his father disappeared. He recalls the joy he felt watching Jonathan and Mary grow and expresses regret for his unexplained departure. The second letter, hidden in a park where the family shared fond memories, reflects on Jonathan’s childhood and achievements. Aubrey encourages him to value compassion over wealth, a lesson he feels Jonathan has embraced by choosing medicine over banking. In the final letter, Aubrey reveals he is terminally ill and cannot bear for his family to see him suffer. Jonathan established himself as a prominent physician before the First World War. Before joining, he conducted at least three significant lectures for other doctors, demonstrating his proficiency as a surgeon. Jonathan was not only a skilled surgeon but also a blood specialist, and the medical community highly liked and respected his knowledge. With the intention of healing individuals in need, Jonathan remained true to the Hippocratic oath he took.

His time in the First World War

Jonathan decided to enlist in the First World War in part to test recently acquired blood transfusion procedures. He joined the service as a physician and remained in France until the fall of 1918 as a medical officer.

VAMPIRISM: Jonathan returned to London intending to use blood transfusion techniques to combat the Spanish Flu. On his way to see his ailing mother, he was attacked by Myrddin Wyltt and blacked out, the last thing he remembered being a haunting poem.

When he awoke, Jonathan found himself lying in a mass grave with no memory of how he ended up there, overwhelmed by a terrible thirst. Struggling to think clearly, he staggered a short distance, drawn by the scent of nearby blood. Acting on impulse, he attacked an unknown person, biting into their neck and drinking their blood. Once his thirst was eased, he realized in horror that he had just killed his own sister.

Although the Great War was ending, Dr. Jonathan now faced a different kind of battle, one only he could stop in time. Turned into a vampire and abandoned to face this fate alone, he was left to navigate his new existence. Torn between his thirst for blood and his duty as a doctor, Jonathan struggled to preserve his humanity and save the city from descending into chaos.

EARLY LIFE: Not much is known about his earlier years, although, like the rest of his tribe, he stayed within the regional area of the North and the Nilfgaardian Empire. Dettlaff's emotions were notably intense, as demonstrated when he was in Lyria around 964, where a monster known as the Brute of Lyria plagued the area and killed around 200 people. While initially unmoved, Dettlaff subsequently heard that the beast killed a young boy who had earlier offered him an apple and expected nothing in return. Enraged at this, Dettlaff found and slew the monster but, not wishing to draw unwanted attention to himself, he planted the dagger with a nearby sleeping hunter so that the people would praise him for slaying the monster instead.

Many years later, after the assault on Stygga Castle in 1268, he found what remained of Regis and, using his own blood and a significant amount of time and patience, nursed the other vampire back to full health. In the process, Regis noticed Dettlaff's tendency to overreact to his own views on what was right and wrong in society, possessing a very black and white outlook on morality.
