Sergeant Eugene Goodman (1980) is a US Capitol Police officer, who, during the 2021 US Capitol insurrection, diverted the rioters from the Senate chamber. He is an Army veteran who served as the acting Deputy Sergeant at Arms of the Senate from January 20, 2021, to March 2, 2021.

On February 12, 2021, the Senate adopted a resolution awarding him the Congressional Gold Medal, a resolution that died in the 117th Congress and never passed the House of Representatives. On January 6, 2023, President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Citizens Medal.

In the days after the attack on the Capitol, his former unit, the XVIII Airborne Corps, issued a statement commending his valor and saying that he “was a hero long before last Wednesday.”

He was born and raised in DC. He served (2002-06) in the Army, including in combat with the 101st Airborne Division in the Iraq War. As a sergeant deployed to Iraq in 2005, he led a 10-man squad in the Sunni Triangle area that conducted patrols and identified improvised explosive devices requiring detonation.

He left the military in December 2006 with the rank of sergeant. He joined the Capitol Police in 2009.

Following the storming of the Capitol, Jaime Harrison and others called for him to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. A bipartisan resolution (H.Res.305) was introduced on January 13, 2021, in Congress by Representatives Charlie Crist (D-FL), Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), and Nancy Mace (R-SC) to award the medal to him. Rep. Cleaver, the original co-sponsor of the bill, wrote that “If not for the quick, decisive, and heroic actions from Officer Goodman, the tragedy of last week’s insurrection could have multiplied in magnitude to levels never before seen in American history. With this prestigious award, we can show our gratitude to Officer Goodman for saving countless lives and defending our democracy”.

Newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump’s proclamation pardoning more than 1,500 defendants involved in the so-called “insurrection” of January 6, 2021, has elicited a statement from a member of the Congressional Black Caucus (and a former Kansas City mayor) Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) condemning Trump’s actions.

In the spirit of full disclosure, let me make it plain here that I am not a fan of Cleaver, who, as a Methodist pastor, also goes by “Reverend Cleaver.” I have written about him several times before in American Thinker, of which one example can be found here.

Cleaver’s statement about the pardons of those charged in the events of Jan. 6 reads as follows:

January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days in American history. As the world looked on and Americans witnessed with their own eyes, President Trump incited an insurrection in an effort to illegally extend his hold on the presidency and prevent the peaceful transfer of power. As a result of the chaos and violence that ensued, more than 100 police officers were injured, several died of their injuries, and the U.S. Capitol building was desecrated, with blood, feces, and other bodily fluids smeared within the halls of Congress. As I reflect on the horrors of that day, it is deeply shocking, but not the least bit surprising.

In December 2021, Biden flew on Air Force One to an event in Kansas City, where he would celebrate the recent passage of the infrastructure bill. With him on the plane was the representative of that district, Emanuel Cleaver. During their discussion, Cleaver said that he also hoped a portion of the money from the new legislation would deliver help to minority communities that had been damaged by past infrastructure projects. Biden replied that he knew exactly what Cleaver was talking about. Back in 1963, when Biden was a student at the University of Delaware, the Delaware Turnpike opened with great fanfare. “You know, when we built the freeway, we destroyed certain parts of the city and divided Black neighborhoods,” Cleaver recalled Biden saying. “We’ve got to start thinking about undoing that.”

In March 2024, a little over two years after their conversation, Cleaver received a notification from the Biden White House. The administration would be providing $3.3 billion “to reconnect communities that have been left behind and divided by transportation infrastructure.”

What then occurred to Cleaver said a lot to him about Joe Biden — including, he would tell me, why the president was so resistant to leaving office after only one term: “He’s had all these ideas over his career. And they’ve been piling up in his head, waiting for the opportunity. And then the opportunity finally hit, and he did not hesitate, and he wanted to keep going.”

Politics is in many ways a feat of memory: an unceasing recognition of where you come from, whom you answer to, what works, who can help, what is expected in return, why you ran for office to begin with. Notwithstanding the public lapses that would ultimately cause fellow Democrats to question his mental acuity and deny him a second term, the prodigious legislative skills derived from 52 years of accumulated knowledge continued to reside in America’s oldest-ever president.

Congressman Rev. Emanuel Cleaver II (October 26, 1944) is a United Methodist pastor and a politician who is a member of the House of Representatives. He represents Missouri’s 5th congressional district, elected in 2005. The district includes the southern three-fourths of Kansas City, including all of the city south of the Missouri River, as well as the more rural counties of Lafayette, Ray, and Saline east of Jackson. He is a member of the Democratic Party, he became chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (2011-13).

He was born in Waxahachie, Texas. He grew up in public housing in Wichita Falls, Texas. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University, where he was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he founded a branch of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and received an M. Div from St. Paul School of Theology.

He was the pastor at the St. James United Methodist Church (1972-2009).
