Werther at the Baden-Baden Festival 2024

Carsen's new production of Werther was an interesting one. We first saw Werther walking in a windowless library surrounded only by bookshelves. As the music progressed, he focused his attention on one particular book (most likely Goethe's Werther). Suddenly, extras emerged and started reading the same type of book Werther was currently reading. There was no interaction; everyone was immersed in their own readings.

Throughout the opera, I found myself pondering the intention of this production. Much of Werther's libretto talks about themes of nature and seasons. Yet, the staging was confined in a closed space.

The director seemed to hint at the symbolism of seasons through the book pages that fell from the balcony, synonymous with the falling leaves of autumn. By the final act, there were no more books on the shelves. They had piled up, forming a mountain where a dying Werther lay on top of it. The autumn had passed, and now it was winter.

Tetelman, as Werther, never shied away from showing off his ringing tenor voice. His "Pourquoi me réveiller?" was executed without any hesitation. His acting, however, could be histrionic. At one point, he was squirming on the floor as he realised that he had lost Charlotte forever. If there was only one criticism to be made, this aspect would be it.

As Werther's object of obsession, Charlotte suffered her own dilemma. Here, Lindsey brought the character to life with her supple lyric mezzo and charismatic stage presence. Her peak moment was in her Letter Aria, where she expressed Charlotte's inner conflict in a palpable manner without being excessive in her acting.

The rest of the principal roles were vocally charming. Zemlianskikh delivered a convincing performance of the stolid Albert. Benoit, as Sophie, infused the cheerful spirit into the melancholic air of the opera.

The roles of the Bailiff, his friends, and Charlotte's young siblings have been altered to fit the director's vision. Instead of depicting familial relationships, they were portrayed merely as the staff and visitors of the library. This radical change consequently made the motive of Werther's storyline less impactful.

Hengelbrock's persuasive conducting was something to write home about. After the intermission, the conductor led the orchestra in La Nuit de Noël. The stage was still being prepared behind the curtain. For four minutes, I set aside my thinking about this overstylised production and absorbed myself in Massenet's finest music.

Racism in the ace community is seen as a joke from the outside and a confusing concept in the inside but it's pretty bait tbh:

Barbie, Wednesday and Elsa are ace-coded but not canon aces but they're widely accepted as ace icons in the community. Lacking genitalia, disliking romance and being single are not inherently asexual yet the community happily claims them as ace solely on those reasons. But Selah Summers? Nah she actually didn't say the words "aroace" even though the director confirmed it so she didn't really count. Abbi Singh? Nah she had a girlfriend and her superpower is being a succubus and it's not like the Imperfects actually addressed the themes of an asexual lesbian South Asian woman and her sexuality or anything. Fei Hargreeves? Well yeah the actress and producer confirmed it but she never said it on screen. Ace characters of colour always get held "screened" for approval to be "real rep" in a way white aces aren't its so weird (this also happens to gay aces but that's another post)

Almost anything involving Yasmin Benoit. The reason she's unacceptable ace rep is because of misogynoir. She's spoken so many times about never dating and not having sex (which mind you is none of our business and she shouldn't need to explain herself in the 1st place) and yet she's "too sexual" to represent the community. Again with the nitpicking, popular white ace accounts were so quick to dogpile her for not-so-good takes but when she speaks about racism? Crickets. When she spoke about sexual harassment? Crickets and not only that but they defended her harasser. The main ace activists that defended her were other Black aspecs.

Not understanding how desexualisation affects POC. Specifically, Black women are excluded from representations of love and sex because we're seen as undesirable. It's common for TV/Film to pair up everyone but the Black girl, or have a rebound Black partner for the non-Black main character who's disposed of when they're ready for their "real" non-Black partner again. This isn't done for Black aspecs benefit. It's a form of dehumanisation. Friendship especially in m/f is needed but exclusively pushing for friendship between Black women and non-Black men when there is romance coded or confirmed and shaming Black women in fandom or in show for shipping the Black female character is not doing what you think its doing.

Not understanding how sexualisation effects POC. Again linking to Yasmin, POC, especially Black people have been sexualised due to white supremacy. The "allosexual privilege" framework fails to acknowledge this because Black people's sexual attraction and sex is seen as aggressive and animalistic. Black people aren't "allowed" to be ace because of this sexualisation and why Yasmin regardless of what she wears or does is seen is too promiscuous.

Not acknowledging ace POC as ace rep. Again, where was the acknowledgement of Selah and the Spades as groundbreaking rep? The first aroace darkskin Black girl as a lead in any film? Sherronda J Brown spoke about Big Mouth's Black ace character and someone said it didn't count just bc they dislike the show. Again with Abbi and Fei the community didn't make noise for them like they did Todd from Bojack Horseman or Florence from Sex Ed (mind you the gap between how they did Florence vs O is jarring in itself) Isaac from Heartstopper was inspirational for many aspecs and I wont take that away but the way he's instantly credited for ace representation when he has so little screentime compared to the others is wild.

Just tired tbh. "Listen to POC aces!" "POC aces are valid!" Prove it then...?

1. Handel's Agrippina, duet between Ottone and Poppea, 'No, no, ch'io non apprezzo' ; performed by Iestyn Davies and Elsa Benoit, Bayerische Staatsoper, 2019. Handel did not write a single bad duet, and this is one of the most stunning. Some modern productions cut it or separate it into 2 solo arias based on past performance variants, which is a real shame.

2. Sergei Rachmaninoff, 'The Isle of the Dead,' Op. 29. The shifts from 2-3 to 3-2 rhythms in the overall 5-4 scheme drive me feral, and the whole piece is incredibly cinematic and evocative. Plus, water music is the best music.

3. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 'Job.' I was lucky enough to attend a weekend of this week's Bard Festival, where I discovered to general delight that the stereotypical (and lovely!) Lark Ascending / Theme of Thomas Tallis RVW represents maybe 5% of his overall work, which is varied, strange, and always fascinating. This was performed to a presentation of Blake's drawings on the Old Testament story and it was breathtaking.

4. Louis Vierne, Finale of Organ Symphony No. 1 in D Minor. I mean. This is wall-shaking. I adore it.

5. Philip Glass, Akhnaten Act 1, Scene 3: Window of Appearances. Can you tell yet that I love a good long crescendo?

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.

Emmanuelle de Negri and Ana Quintans—both of whom I remember from the Hippolyte et Aricie at Glyndebourne that indirectly kicked off this blog—are among the soloists in another Rameau opera, Les Indes galantes, this time at the Beaune Festival. Valentin Tournet conducts the La Chapelle Harmonique Choir and Orchestra. Live broadcast Friday, July 26 on France Musique.*

Alice Coote, Gianlucca Buratto, Franco Fagioli, Elsa Benoit, and Iestyn Davies star in a video livestream of Handel’s Agrippina from the Bayerische Staatsoper on Sunday, July 28 (NOT Tuesday the 23rd as mistakenly stated earlier on my blog). Ivor Bolton conducts; Barrie Kosky is the director. 

I haven’t yet heard soprano Mariana Flores in performance but the name of baroque composer Barbara Strozzi caught my eye in the listing for Flores’ Proms concert with the Cappella Mediterranea (conducted by Leonardo García Alarcón). Monday, July 29 on BBC Radio 3.*

* France Musique and BBC Radio 3 usually make concert broadcasts available for listening on demand on their websites for a few weeks following the initial broadcast. The Beeb is pretty reliable; France Musique is maybe 80% hit, 20% miss (perhaps due to the terms of their contracts with various orchestras).
