Bolton Film Festival - 20th and 21st September 2017
I attended this event mainly because my graduate film “The Awakening” was shown in the Student Shorts section but I also attended “Industry Talk” for the short film “The Silent Child” and listened to people in industry talk about their process, Chris Lunt and Jason Wingard and the “Animation” showing, which showed 7 animations from around the world.
“The Silent Child” was a short live action film and the director, producer, associate producer and lead actress were in attendance and took audience questions. The film is about a deaf child born into a hearing family and their response to helping her learn before going to school. They emphasied how important it was to have the film be authentic so they did a nationwide search to find the 5 year old actress and got news sites involved like BBC. The main actress wrote the film herself too, as he dad is profoundly dead, so she knows how to sign (and a majority of the film shows her signing to the young girl, Maisie, whilst subtitles show what they are saying) and became best friends with the young girl by gaining her trust. They had no funding for the film and didn’t ask for money, they got it from close friends who were very generous and they feel lucky that they had those people and an incredible team. It took 6 months for them to plan the shots of the film as they focused on getting the cinematography just right, as well as focusing on certain aspects in the film to set the tone, such as lips and hands and colours. They filmed 50 scenes in 8 days because they were on a deadline to get things done and they think it is important for it to go mainstream, even though at the moment it’s on a festival run. The issues shown in the animation are very real and deaf children need support in schools. They want to make the film into a feature film as the concept works and it can be made longer and they want to use the same young girl and tell her story over a longer period of time. The main actress, Rachel Shenton, is so happy with how the deaf community has received the film, as throughout the process she was involved with charities and has been an ambassador for over 10 years. They reflected on the importance of social media and the impact it made on helping make their film a reality, through the way they built an audience and engaged them online and they feel really lucky to get noticed online on the scale they got to. They also discussed their use of drones and how they worked as they “were a low budget film with high quality shots” and they picked specific moments to use them, which reflect the isolation of the character at the end and also the journey to that point. I feel that it is a beautiful film with an important message.

Jason Winggard and Chris Lunt are film makers who have worked for people like BBC Comedy and ABC amongst others. They talk about the importance of owning the rights and collaborating with equals and they have made a lot of films over the years. They are both local to the North West area and talked about their journey to where they are now. They offered advice and how it’s good to always have a collaborative attitude and sometimes you have to let go of your project and let directors do their thing.

In the “Animation” screening, there were 7 short films that were all really interesting and were 2D, 3D and stop motion films.
1. Spring Jam by Ned Wenlock (New Zealand, 2016) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6286744/
- This was a cute 2D animation that featured musical animals and a journey to be accepted. I really enjoyed this film as it looked so nice as the designs were textured and unique and it was very well animated.
2. Pencilless Case - Magdalena Pilecka (Poland, 2016) https://vimeo.com/152277043
- This was an interesting animation about a character who doesn’t have a pencil as part of their body, whereas on the other side of his door, everyone has a pencil and he wants to be part of that world. It was a bit odd and also pretty dark but well animated.
3. Au Revoir Balthazar - Rafael Sommerhalder (Switzerland, 2016) http://www.aurevoirbalthazar.com/
- This was a beautiful stop motion animation that had a unique style and pretty sets. The main puppet has an interesting design which fits well for the purpose. This film’s bio is “The scarecrow Balthazar hears something enticing in the seashell. A sound so wonderful that he is ready to leave everything behind.”, which is basically a summary of what happens, I really enjoyed this film. What I didn’t realise until I watched the behind the scenes video, is that this was animated on a multiplane with many different layers and they used a lot of real materials which makes this film even more amazing.
4. Perched - Liam Harris (UK, 2016) https://liamh.co.uk/2016/03/03/perched/
- Perched is a combination of 2D hand drawn animation with the exterior set being a physical thing, as you can see on the production blog (https://liamh.co.uk/2016/03/03/perched-production-stills/). The story is sweet and classic and appeals to all ages. There is no dialogue and it isn’t needed as everything is expressed well through the animation of the characters and the situation they are in.
5. Where Have The Flowers Gone - Sin Hong Chan (Hong Kong, 2016) http://augohr.de/catalogue/where-have-the-flowers-gone
- This is a CG dark animation about a pig who works in an industrial factory and his day to day life and the effects it has on him. This film is incredibly made and was created by mostly one person, which is admirable because of how much goes on in this.
6. Sore Eyes for Infinity - Elli Vourinen (Finland, 2016) 
- This animation is so interesting and unique with a nice art style. I liked the journey the main character went on and how escalated things got and what it leads to. The visuals are captivating and this film stuck with me for a while afterwards because of how different it was. I found an IndieGoGo campaign for this film from 2015, which wasn’t fully funded but it was just for the last 10% of the budget at this point anyway (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sore-eyes-for-infinity-by-elli-vuorinen-film-animation#/). The bio for the film is “The film tells a beautiful and heartfelt story about the feelings of anxiety and helplessness we all sometimes feel when trying to cope with the world around us - and about the equally familiar need to take a break from it all.”, which is basically what the film gets across very well. The video the animation director made is very good too as it mentions the studio who helped her make the film.
7. Bald Future - Paul Cabon (France, 2016) http://paulcabon.com/Le-Futur-sera-chauve-The-bald-future
- This was a humorous, interesting and well animated film. The storytelling aspect of it through the narration and matching imagery worked perfectly together. I liked the style of animation and the fluid way it flowed from scene to scene.
I am glad I attended this festival as I got to see a lot of great and inspiring films for free and also be part of it with my own film which was an honour.

Svjetski festival animiranog filma – Animafest Zagreb završio je danas ceremonijom dodjele nagrada u Kinu Europa. Nakon 350 prikazanih filmova i brojnih popratnih događanja u šest festivalskih dana, stigao je i najsvečaniji trenutak proglašenja najboljih autora i filmova. ​Žiri Velikog natjecanja kratkometražnog filma u sastavu Michaela Pavlátová, Rosto, Amid Amidi, Nobuaki Doi i Marko Tadić odlučio je Grand Prix dodijeliti slovensko-hrvatskom filmu Noćna ptica (Nighthawk) redateljice Špele Čadež, u produkciji Finta Filma, Radiotelevizije Slovenije i Bonobostudija. U obrazloženju žirija stoji:
​Ovaj prividno jednostavan, no iznenađujuće složen film podiže tradicionalnu animacijsku tehniku višeslojnog cut-outa na novu razinu. Film koristi paralelno pripovijedanje pri premještanju između različitih percepcija kako bi učinkovito stvorio iznimno dirljivu ljudsku/životinjsku tragediju.
​Isti je žiri Nagradu Zlatni Zagreb za kreativnost i inovativno umjetničko postignuće uručio Jonathanu Vinelu za film Martin plače (Martin Cries, Francuska, AKA Productions).
​Nasilna mašta kulture videoigara pronalazi novo značenje – i ljepotu – u ovoj melankoličnoj priči o tinejdžeru kojega su iznenada napustili najbolji prijatelji. Vinel koristi disonantne kvalitete videoigara i filma te ih integrira na jedinstven i organski način. Njegovo majstorsko raspolaganje digitalnim filmskim sredstvima važnije je od učmale rasprave "je li machinima animacija"? Nama kreativnost i inovacija podrazumijevaju sposobnost nadilaženja jednostavnih etiketa i kategorija te prihvaćanje bilo kojeg sredstva koje će nam kroz animaciju otkriti nova značenja i perspektive. – objasnio je žiri.
​Nagrada Zlatko Grgić za najbolji prvi film napravljen izvan obrazovne institucije otišla je švedsko-estonskom filmu Amalimbo (Fasad, Fork Film Animation Studio, Film Väst) Juana Pabla Libossarta.
​Ova kratka priča vodi nas na prelijepo emocionalno putovanje kroz simboličan, nedefiniran, no jezivo poznat svijet čuda u koji bježimo kada se borimo s demonima i gdje, nakon svega, pronalazimo svoj unutarnji mir. – poručio je žiri Velikog natjecanja kratkometražnog filma.
​Članovi žirija odlučili su dodijeliti i posebna priznanja. Michaela Pavlátová nagradila je tako finski film Bolne oči za beskonačnost (Sore Eyes For Infinity) Elli Vuorinen, navodeći kako je riječ o iznenađujućem, svježem filmu prekrasne animacije i vizuala koji nas vode u vječnost. ​Rosta se posebno dojmio španjolski rad Orogeneza (Orogenesis) francuskog redatelja Borisa Labbéa jer taj film napreduje kroz vrijeme i prostor neumoljivim koracima, cijepa, dere i rasteže planinske masive tako da me pogađa ravno u utrobu. Soundtrack, jednako uvjerljiv ali otuđujući, neizbježan je i neodvojiv dio čitavog doživljaja. Mogu samo sjesti i uživati u uranjanju u ovo putovanje – rekao je Rosto. ​Amid Amidi svoje je posebno priznanje uručio kanadskom filmu Promjena (Change) Jonathana Ostrema koji ne prestaje iznenađivati i u sebe uvlačiti gledatelja. Čini to eksperimentalnom kompjuterskom animacijom koja ga vodi na onozemaljsko putovanje te mu neprestano dezorijentira i reorijentira osjećaj za prostor i vrijeme. – stoji u Amidijevom obrazloženju. ​Nobuaki Doi odabrao je, pak, njemački film Rugoba (Ugly) Nikite Diakura. Još uvijek postoje neistražena polja umjetničkog izričaja kompjuterske animacije. Ovaj film savršen je primjer. Dinamičan, ali inertan pokret sve gradi iznova i omogućava nam da sanjamo o svijetu gdje je sve ljepše i bolje. – istaknuo je Doi. ​Naposljetku, Marko Tadić svoje je posebno priznanje predao Evi Cvijanović za kanadsko-hrvatsku Ježevu kuću (Hedgehog's Home), nastalu u produkciji National Film Board of Canada i Bonobostudija, te je svoju odluku obrazložio riječima: Ova kratka i simbolična priča donijela je radost brojnoj djeci svih uzrasta te oblikovala mnoge živote. Ja sam živi dokaz da ti čak i nakon što je čuješ šest milijardi puta tijekom jedne vožnje na more ne može dosaditi.
​Prema odluci žirija Velikog natjecanja dugometražnog filma u sastavu Natalia Lukinykh, Ben Mitchell i Simon Bogojević Narath Grand Prix je pripao filmu Crvena kornjača (Red Turtle, Francuska / Belgija / Japan) Michaëla Dudok de Wita, nastalom u produkciji sedam kuća predvođenih studijima Ghibli i Wild Bunch. Žiri je svoju odluku obrazložio sljedećim riječima:
​Iako je odluka o nagrađivanju jednog filma među brojnim nevjerojatno kvalitetnim filmovima uvijek teška, film za kojega smatramo da mu pripada Grand Prix sve nas je oduševio zbog istog razloga. Ovaj film odlikuje radosna razigranost vizualnog dijela i čudesne glazbe te neprijeporno majstorska animacija u izvedbi predane umjetničke ekipe koja je detalju i likovima posvetila nesvakidašnju razinu pažnje. Filmu koji slavi neumoljivu okrutnost prirode te njezinu ljepotu koja potvrđuje život s veseljem dodjeljujemo Grand Prix.
​Isti je žiri svoja posebna priznanja dodijelio filmovima Louise na obali (Louise by the Shore, Francuska / Kanada) Jean-Françoisa Laguioniea i Djevojka bez ruku (The Girl Without Hands, Francuska) Sébastiena Laudenbacha, uz sljedeću poruku:
​Posebna priznanja dodjeljujemo dvama filmovima koji na predivan način propituju dublje teme ljudskosti, autorefleksije i samoočuvanja. Iako su stilski različiti, karakteristične vizualne identitete oba filma resi promišljena i dirljiva pripovjedna struktura u čijoj srži stoje šarmantni ženski likovi.
​Objedinjeni žiri Natjecanja studentskog filma i Hrvatskog natjecanja u sastavu Alberto Vázquez, Jana Jakoubek i Sandra Malenica odlučio je Nagradu Dušan Vukotić za najbolji studentski film dodijeliti poljskom filmu Mačkica (Pussy) Renate Gąsiorowske, nastalom na Nacionalnoj filmskoj školi u Łódźu.
​Feminizam je otišao korak dalje. Ustvari, feminizam se u ovom filmu nalazi točno ondje gdje treba – potpuno je otvoren, slobodan, spontan i, iznad svega, nama pred nosom na najdoslovniji mogući način. Razgovor o seksualnosti, osobito o ženskoj seksualnosti, još je uvijek tabu. Zato je ovaj film tako svjež, zabavan, osjetljiv i stvaran. Priča mu je tečna, crtež jednostavan, a zvuk i animacija izvrsni. Podsjeća na to da ženski „dijelovi tijela“ također imaju svoj život. Barem na filmu. Nagradu Dušan Vukotić dodjeljujemo hrabroj i prelijepoj Mačkici Renate Gasiorowske. – stoji u obrazloženju žirija.
​Prema odluci istoga žirija, posebna priznanja pripala su filmovima Summer's Puke is Winter's Delight (Japan, Sveučilište Tama) Sawako Kabuki i Soba moga oca (My Father's Room, Južna Koreja, K'ARTS) Nari Jang.
​Kratki animirani film Summer's Puke is Winter's Delight vodi nas na iritantno i uzbudljivo putovanje, poticajno i vidu i sluhu, koje završava – u WC-u. Bezbroj puta. Poremećaj u prehrani kao tema potrošačkog društva predstavlja nam se na jedinstven način, u disko groznici. Ovisnost o pražnjenju sadržaja u nama prikazana je kao bujica slika. Gledatelj proživljava morfijske transformacije, dok se boje istodobno suprotstavljaju i slažu s tabuiziranom temom. Zvuk i slike savršeno su usklađeni i uspijevaju naglasiti odbojan trenutak kada povraćanje postaje repetitivna slika, obrazac.
​Posebno priznanje dodjeljujemo i filmu Soba moga oca Nari Jang zbog osobne simbolike, profinjene i minimalističke grafičke linije, ispunjene metaforikom i grafičkim alatima za postizanje dobre ravnoteže između povijesti, pripovijedanja i tehnike. – istaknuo je žiri.
​Najbolji film Hrvatskog natjecanja je Manivald Chintis Lundgren, nastao u estonsko-hrvatsko-kanadskoj koprodukciji (Chintis Lundgreni Animatsioonistuudio / Adriatic Animation / NFB), dok su posebna priznanja pripala Božidaru Trkulji za Posljednji izazov (The Last Quest, Hrvatska) u produkciji Zagreb filma te Michaeli Müller za najbolju manjinsku hrvatsku koprodukciju Aerodrom (Airport, Švicarska / Hrvatska, Schick Productions, Kinorama). Žiri je svoje odluke obrazložio sljedećim riječima:
​Nagradu za najbolji hrvatski film, apsolutno jednoglasno, dodjeljujemo Manivaldu Chintis Lundgren zbog osobnog i jedinstvenog stila, zabavne radnje i, iznad svega, zbog analiziranja obiteljskih sukoba s duhovitim smislom za humor, no bez imalo drame.
​Scenografija filma Posljednji izazov Božidara Trkulje oborila nas je s nogu. Autori su se posebno potrudili i nijedan detalj nije slučajan – osobito oni iznenađujući, puni čudnovatog humora. Nekolicina tipičnih junaka fantasyja – manje-više umirovljenih – susrela se u ovom stop-animiranom filmu u borbi protiv neprijatelja. Željeli bismo ga pogledati sličicu po sličicu da ništa ne propustimo. Ovaj nas je film vratio u djetinjstvo i nasmijao, što smo kao odrasli prihvatili kao predivan dar.
​Film Aerodrom Michaele Müller vodi nas odmah u srž radnje. Dočarava osoban, no ujedno i općeniti doživljaj. Film je to u kojem se možemo izgubiti, baš kao i u pravom životu, kaotičan, sužen, unaprijed određen pravilima. Snažne metaforike, s velikim kontrastom boja, fluidnošću pokreta, prijelazima i transformacijom. To je film koji je poput sna o mjestu o kojem govori.
​O pobjednicima natjecanja site-specific animacije Animation goes MSU odlučivao je žiri u sastavu Vesna Meštrić, Leila Topić i Daniel Šuljić, koji je nagradu odlučio dodijeliti Paulu Fletcheru za rad Vožnja na posao (The Drive to Work, Australija).
​Riječ je o halucinantnom spoju apstraktne animacije i figurativnih prizora koji potpuno zaokuplja perceptivni sklop promatrača. Film se postupno razvija od početnih kadrova, zapravo bljeskova svijetlosti koji se mogu referirati na brzi prolazak autoputom na putu prema radnom mjestu do fascinantne, nenarativne pripovijesti o mogućem hektičnom suživotu amorfnih pulsirajućih stvorenja i filmskim postupcima izmijenjenih svakodnevnih prizora. Rezultat je visokosugestivna i ritmički začudna trodijelna projekcija koja u potpunosti oživljava medijsku fasadu MSU-a. – stoji u obrazloženju.
​Žiri je odlučio dodijeliti i posebno priznanje filmu Klima (The Climate, Hrvatska) umjetničkog kolektiva M_1300 kojega čine Marita Stanić i Maja Blažek. Žiri je odlučio honorirati sklonost umjetničkog kolektiva inovativnosti, eksperimentu, multidisciplinarnosti te transformaciji svakodnevnog u umjetničko djelo.
​Pobjednike Natjecanja filmova za djecu birao je žiri u sastavu Gita Validžić Rožman, Tin Gregorić, Vid Valkaj, Matea Bračko i Jan Kožić. Žiri je jednoglasnom odlukom glavnu nagradu dodijelio filmu Ostaviti trag (Leave a print, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo) Christine Susanne Nerland,
​filmu koji na jedinstven način progovara o vrlo teškoj i neizbježnoj temi. Film ostavlja utjehu i olakšanje nakon smrti bliske osobe, koja se, kako je prikazano u filmu, pretvara u svjetlost koja nas okružuje. Posebno nas se dojmio do sada neviđen prikaz postepenog blijeđenja, odnosno nestajanja voljene osobe.
​Odlukom istog žirija posebno priznanje u Natjecanju filmova za djecu pripalo je norveškom filmu Odd je jaje (Odd is an Egg) Kristin Ulseth,
​zbog originalnog pristupa temi različitosti, korištenja različitih animacijskih tehnika i unošenja redateljskih detalja koji naglašavaju stanja i odnose među likovima.
​Naposljetku, Nagrada publike Mr. M za film iz programa Velikog natjecanja kratkometražnog filma odlazi u ruke Eve Cvijanović za film Ježeva kuća, dok ista nagrada za film iz programa Velikog natjecanja dugometražnog filma putuje Claudeu Barrasu u Švicarsku za film Moj život kao tikvica (My Life as a Courgette, Švicarska / Francuska).
​28. Svjetski festival animiranog filma održat će se od 4. do 9. lipnja 2018. godine.

Benigni (2009)
Benigni, yalnız kaldığı dairesinde hayata küskün ve sıkıntılı görüntü çizen bir sanatçının kolunun altında çıkan tümör ile kurduğu duygusal bağı ve kısa bir süre içerisinde yaşadıklarını konu alıyor.
