If you have any lingering BB interest left, Julianne Hough will have a book published in August. Supernatural fiction (written with Ellen Goodlett), and personal experiences included. Sounds enough of my jam, so I might actually give it a chance. And YESS for reading from neutral place. I've never managed to read for myself yet.
Honestly, this sounds intriguing and messy enough to make me interested :D If you will read it and want to give me a summary, I will publish it happily.
Reading for yourself requires a huge amount of strength and self-knowledge and honesty. That's why I think shadow work and tarot are an amazing combination and it's all about yourself. but it's not for the faith-hearted. I won't lie sometimes I struggle myself but there are specific decks for it which can help.

Hello and good morning, everyone! We’re over halfway through the week, hope you’re all hanging in there! :) That crazy YA book sale for ebooks is still going on, so I’m posting more that I didn’t get to yesterday for those that are interested! There are honestly so many, it’s pretty crazy to me still haha. And if you missed yesterday’s post, those books are also still on sale. (Also, to those who are interested--I posted two today that I happened to see, but I’m going to see about trying to included some more non-ebook deals starting next week! I can’t promise I’ll be overly successful, but I will try my hardest, haha, and I can look across different platforms too if there’s time--like B&N or something!)
Here is the link to find resources on how you can help out with the BLM movement, whether by donating, educating, etc.! Keep the momentum going!

Sisters Akeylah, Ren, and Zofi are all a step closer to their dying father's throne, a step closer to the crown that will allow one of them to rule over Kolonya. But the sisters' pasts continue to haunt them. Each hides a secret marked with blood and betrayal, and now their blackmailer is holding nothing back. When King Andros discovers the sisters' traitorous pasts, the consequences will shake the entire kingdom to its core. As Kolonya's greatest threat stalks closer and closer, weaving a web of fear and deceit around Ren, Zofi, and Akeylah, even the people they love are under suspicion. If the sisters are going to survive, they'll have to learn to trust each other above all else and work together, not only to save themselves, but to protect everyone and everything they hold dear.

this duology IS SO GOOD! I started it to give me something else to love so I didn’t zoom through the Harley Merlin series & I’m so glad I went with this one. I had been looking at it since the first book, Reign, had just came out but fantasy audiobooks really require me to be in the right mood to get into. If I’m even slightly disinterested, it’s just a chore but with my body having just about everything trigger, fantasy was like a warm blanket. I do wish this series was longer but I’m also glad it’s not because sometimes it’s nice to have a quick YA fantasy series to get into vs more than three books especially since the Harley Merlin series & Waking Land one are both longer 😝 I’ll probably attempt to find another short or some standalone to get into to not zoom thru those two. Any recommendations you love?

Rule (Rule, #1) by Ellen Goodlett
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5
~I received an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review~
--
Three girls with three deadly secrets. Only one can wear the crown. The king is dying, his heir has just been murdered, and rebellion brews in the east. But the kingdom of Kolonya and the outer Reaches has one last option before it descends into leaderless chaos. Or rather, three unexpected options. Zofi has spent her entire life trekking through the outer Reaches with her band of Travelers. She would do anything to protect the band, her family. But no one can ever find out how far she's already gone. Akeylah was raised in the Eastern Reach, surrounded by whispers of rebellion and abused by her father. Desperate to escape, she makes a decision that threatens the whole kingdom. Ren grew up in Kolonya, serving as a lady's maid and scheming her way out of the servants' chambers. But one such plot could get her hung for treason if anyone ever discovers what she's done. When the king summons the girls, they arrive expecting arrest or even execution. Instead they learn the truth: they are his illegitimate daughters, and one must become his new heir. But someone in Kolonya knows their secrets, and that someone will stop at nothing to keep the sisters from their destiny... to rule.
Each of the three main characters has a secret that will threaten her very place in Kolonya as a possible heir to the throne. It doesn't take long for a mysterious blackmailer to show up and begin threatening to reveal their secrets. Will the girls find out who is doing the blackmailing and put an end to it? Which girl will be the next ruler of Kolonya? If the blackmailer has a say, it will be none of the three.
There’s some really nice diversity in this series starter, with the majority of the characters being POC and there’s a f/f romance with one of the three main characters (more on this in a minute) that was insta-love but was swoon-worthy all the same.
There’s some background for Kolonya that sets up more political intrigue (too much for this review). Not to mention the king, their father, is married to a queen that is their age-- and whom one of the daughters begins to fall for. The magic system of the world sets up some interesting plot lines, and is interesting in itself. In order to use magic, one has to tithe-- in blood. Depending on how it’s used, one has an extra boost in speed, strength, armour, visibility, etc. There’s a darker side to it called the Vulgar Arts & is considered worse than any physical crime.
The themes of racism and prejudice are very prominent in this book and it’s written well. It has amazing world building, LGBTQ+ rep, morally gray characters, strong female characters (meaning well-written, not just physically strong), dark politics, and mysteries that had me second-guessing so many times!
Though this book is compared to Three Dark Crowns, it’s not similar at all. Rule is very much its own story, with the only similarity being three girls are vying for the spot of Queen. There’s a great deal of twists, which is probably why it’s compared to Pretty Little Liars (haven’t read or seen it). There’s action right from the beginning, and it continues throughout the whole novel. The climax was very engaging and well-written. However, the story is a bit predictable at times, especially with who the blackmail suspect turns out to be (spoilers: not who you’re supposed to think it is).
Overall, a great red! I can’t wait for the next one!

Writing On The Road: A Guest Post With Rise Author Ellen Goodlett
Writing On The Road: A Guest Post With Rise Author Ellen Goodlett
Tumblr media
I’m delighted to have Ellen Goodlett on the site today to celebrate the release of Rise, the sequel to YA Fantasy Rule! (Yes, one of the three sisters is queer and yes, there’s an f/f relationship!) Ellen did a badass trip around the world that was one of my favorite things ever to follow in the history of Instagram, and she’s here to talk about the process of writing over that year! But first,…
