#FraseraParryi has it all: ✅green flowers, ✅neat little purple-blue speckles ✅squiggly leaves, ✅unexpected white accent stripes. It’s like someone took all of my favorite quirky elements and combined them into one plant. #californianativeplants #californiawildflowers #frasera #greengentians #gentianaceae #greenflowers #undulatingleaves #unusualflowers #CoahuillaFrasera #SwertiaParryi #swertia #deersears #elkweed (at San Diego County, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CemTiPWOzuF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Frasera speciosa fruit (septicidal capsule) and seeds. Known as showy frasera, elkweed, and deer's ears, the Havasupai use F. speciosa medicinally for colds, digestive issues, venereal disease, headaches, and asthma while the Navajo use them as a sedative and psychological aid. #Gentianaceae #gentian #Frasera #deersears #arizona #ponderosapineforest #nativeplants #botanize #botany #plants #nature #naturephotography  #seeds #medicinalplants (at Arizona)

“Bumblebee on Elkweed Blossom,” amongst the Aspen trees on Kendrick Park watchable wildlife trail, observed last month during day hike north of Flagstaff, Arizona. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.  New hiking photos added to my online album arizonadayhiker.com

I had a magical time today, just north of the Mogollon Rim- an area in my top 3 favorite parts of Arizona. The Rim is the 200 mile long southern end of the Colorado Plateau, a major geographic feature of the Southwestern US. It rises 3000-4000 ft (915-1200 m) above the land below, creating a unique floristic and faunal boundary and thus an area of high diversity. Along a lush, ephemeral creek-bed, hundreds of pollinating insects flew among the flowers. I’m so grateful this place exists and that I get paid to spend time there! The butterfly and first bee were on Iris missouriensis, Rocky Mountain iri, Iridaceae. The other bees were on Frasera speciosa, elkweed or deers ears, Gentianaceae. Two of my favorite plants! #bug #insect #pollinators #butterfly #bee #bumblebee #arizona #northernarizona #nature #naturephotography #naturemakespeoplehappy #nativeplants #botany #plants #nature #naturephotography  #botanylove #plantstagram #plantsarefriends #naturelovers (at Stoneman Lake, Arizona)
