In 1971, Richard Nixon, in an act which came to be known as the “Nixon Shock," suspended the the direct convertibility of the dollar into gold. The same period witnessed the coming to prominence of dematerized art practices. Soft Shock engages with issues of value exchange, immateriality, and the parallel economies that exist on the fringe of, but whose existence is conditioned by, globalized economies. In particular, Lucie Fontaine examines the phenomenon of Bitcoin, a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency, which was introduced as open source software in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, a fictional identity whose constituent members remain unknown. Marc Andreessen, who invested $50 millions in Bitcoin-related start-ups, writes, “Much like email, which is quite traceable, Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous.”
