as a (reluctant) film bro I have to say that watching people remove Come And See from its specific context and describe it as simply a general, broadly anti-war film does, in fact, bother the fuck out of me.
Of COURSE it’s an anti-war film, obviously, yes. I’m not contesting that. But it’s a film about the HOLOCAUST. It is a film about the NAZIS, and Operation Barbarossa, and the Einstatzgruppen. It’s not just about “war bad”. It’s about a very specific war, a very specific fascist regime, and their specific goals and intentions, and the very real atrocities they committed that are still within living memory. The Nazi occupation of Belarus and the genocide they carried out there is, in fact, part of the Holocaust, in what we historians now call the Holocaust by Bullets. It MATTERS that this is a Holocaust film.
But honestly people are SO averse to talking about the Holocaust these days because lefties don’t want to touch the subject of antisemitism with a ten foot pole — not only because they don’t care about it, but because they don’t want to be seen as being sympathetic to Jews at all. It’s much easier for them to take Klimov’s film and simply refuse to talk about its actual story and historical context. God forbid they talk about the Holocaust in any meaningful manner. Fuck all of y’all who watch the movie and go “omg wow this is so deep” and then literally refuse to engage with the realities of antisemitism and the Holocaust at all. The Holocaust by Bullets in Eastern Europe is, in fact, inextricably tied with the rest of Holocaust history and, in turn, tied with Antisemitism.
