Zonky turtle by Harvey Cohen and Andrew Downing (1975), La Trobe University, Australia. After a spell in the MIT Logo Group in 1974, Cohen was inspired by the Logo language and robotic turtles. The aim of the OZNAKI Project at La Trobe University is to develop tools for teaching maths to primary school students (Oznaki is Polish for "sign" or "logo"). To achieve drawing accuracy, the Logo turtle uses high precision stepper motors. Cohen wanted to build a mechanically simpler turtle using cheaper components. Working with grad student Andrew Downing, they developed Zonky which makes up for its cheap simplicity with sophisticated electronics. Instead of stepper motors, it uses DC motors, and counts pulses from the rotation of the commutator through the brushes. And rather than use the Logo turtle's fat ribbon cable, Zonky has a lighter two wire serial cable that carries messages in the OZ language from the university's DEC-10 computer. A hole drilled through the centre is for inserting a pen for drawing, and it also has a horn for “honking”. "Zonky was based on the chassis of a toy tank. With both motors turning in the same direction, Zonky travelled Forward, or Back. If the motors had opposite directions, the robot turned on the spot. It was not practical to turn Zonky through an exact angle, due to slip of the tracks. The main point of the experience with Zonky was to sharpen up students ability to direct a Turtle through the turning commands, R(IGHT), L(EFT), in addition to the more obvious F(ORWARD) and B(ACK) and so prepare students for their encounter with a screen Turtle."
