How an Electronic Logging System (ELS) Enhances Fleet Management
In the fast-paced world of logistics and transportation, efficiency and compliance are critical. Fleet managers face numerous challenges, from ensuring drivers adhere to regulations to optimizing route planning and reducing operational costs. One powerful tool that addresses these challenges is the Electronic Logging System (ELS). This blog explores how an Electronic Logging System (ELS) enhances fleet management and why it is indispensable for modern fleet operations.
The Basics of Electronic Logging Systems
An Electronic Logging System (ELS) is a digital device used to record a driver's hours of service (HOS) automatically. It replaces traditional paper logbooks, providing a more accurate and reliable method of tracking driving hours. The system connects to a vehicle's engine to gather data such as driving time, engine hours, vehicle movement, and location information.
Enhancing Compliance and Safety
One of the primary benefits of an ELS is its ability to enhance compliance with regulations set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The FMCSA mandates that commercial drivers maintain accurate records of their driving hours to prevent fatigue-related accidents. ELS ensures that drivers cannot falsify their logs, thereby promoting adherence to HOS regulations and improving road safety.
By providing real-time data, ELS allows fleet managers to monitor drivers' hours and ensure they take required rest breaks. This proactive approach reduces the risk of violations and the hefty fines associated with non-compliance. Additionally, it helps in identifying patterns that might indicate risky behavior, enabling timely interventions to prevent accidents.
Improving Operational Efficiency
Fleet management involves juggling multiple tasks, from dispatching vehicles to monitoring their maintenance schedules. How an Electronic Logging System (ELS) enhances fleet management is evident in its ability to streamline these operations. With accurate and real-time data, fleet managers can make informed decisions that improve efficiency.
ELS provides insights into driver performance, helping managers identify top performers and those who may need additional training. It also aids in route optimization by analyzing traffic patterns and suggesting the most efficient paths, reducing fuel consumption and delivery times. Furthermore, automated logging minimizes administrative tasks, allowing managers to focus on strategic planning and other critical areas.
Reducing Operational Costs
Operational costs can significantly impact a fleet's profitability. ELS contributes to cost reduction in several ways. By ensuring compliance with HOS regulations, fleets avoid fines and penalties. The system's ability to optimize routes leads to lower fuel consumption and maintenance costs due to reduced wear and tear on vehicles.
Moreover, ELS can help detect engine issues early by monitoring vehicle performance data. This proactive maintenance approach prevents costly breakdowns and extends the lifespan of fleet assets. The reduction in paperwork and administrative workload also translates to cost savings, as fewer resources are required for log management.
Enhancing Driver Satisfaction
Driver satisfaction is crucial for fleet success. An overworked and stressed driver is more likely to make errors, leading to accidents and delays. ELS promotes a healthier work-life balance by ensuring drivers adhere to rest periods and avoid overworking. This compliance not only enhances safety but also improves driver well-being and job satisfaction.
With automated logging, drivers spend less time on paperwork and more on the road, doing what they do best. The transparency provided by ELS also fosters trust between drivers and management, as data is accurate and tamper-proof. Happy and healthy drivers are more productive, leading to better overall fleet performance.
In conclusion, understanding how an Electronic Logging System (ELS) enhances fleet management is crucial for any fleet manager aiming to improve efficiency, compliance, and safety. How to Find Truck Loads for Owner Operators
More than 70% of transported goods are moved by trucks in the United States. More than 90% of companies in the United States long-distance freight trucking industry are owner-operators. Getting frequent, reliable, and well-paying truck loads is crucial for the smooth running of any trucking business. In the past, owner-operators had to constantly check physical load boards, wait in truck shops, or make several calls a day in order to get loads. Times have now changed. The internet, smartphones, apps, etc. offer an advantage to finding a reliable source to get truck loads. If you are still in the researching phase of becoming a new owner operator please see our full guide on how to start a trucking business in 2024.
Below are a few ways in which an owner-operator can find loads:
Load boards
Load boards are the most common way to find loads. This is especially a reliable option for a new business to get rolling quick. A Load board is essentially an online site that provides a shared platform for shippers and truckers/owner-operators. The shippers post information of the load such as the origin, distance, destination and other important details, and owner operators can apply to pick up transport those loads. Load boards can be very helpful if the business is not leased onto a dedicated carrier.
Load board apps are also available on smartphones that provides multiple listings to help owner-operators find suitable loads. Load boards differ from one service provider to another. While some may provide the services for free, others charge a fee to access the boards. We discuss the best load board sites for owner operators:
Paid load board websites that also offer free trial:
Direct Freight - https://www.directfreight.com/home/
DAT - https://www.dat.com/load-boards
Get loaded - http://www.getloaded.com/
Truckers Edge - https://www.truckersedge.net/
Load Match - https://www.loadmatch.com/
Free load board websites:
Trucker Path - https://truckerpath.com/truckloads/free-load-board/
Trulos - http://www.trulos.com/
DSSLN - http://www.dssln.com/
Freight Finder - https://www.freightfinder.com/
Load up - http://www.usacanadaloadup.com/
Apps:
Trucker Path
DAT
Truckloads & Freight
All the websites or apps above should give a start to owner operators on how to find truck loads with a load board. Other options apart from public load boards are below.
Lease-on
Some companies have a private load board. These are specifically for owner-operators to lease-on with that company. This option provides the owner-operator with the stability of a big company – which is an added advantage for a new owner-operator. It also gives the freedom to choose the freight directly from a load board. Some companies also offer discounts on operating expenses to owner-operators. Hence, it helps the owner-operator utilize its purchasing power. Owner-operators may also get paid a fuel surcharge versus per mile.
Freight brokers
Freight brokers help finding loads. Choosing a freight broker can be a handy option if an owner-operator is not looking to lease-on with a trucking company. A freight broker eases the process by doing most of the leg-work. This includes dispatching loads, tracking shipments, payrolls, invoicing, etc. A freight broker assists a shipper in finding a carrier that is qualified to move its load. Once a deal is negotiated, the broker connects the shipper with the owner-operator. The broker negotiates the highest amount with the shipper for the load, and connects the shipper with a carrier that is willing to move it at the lowest amount. The margin is called a spread, and is charged by the broker as a fee for the service provided. The spread is usually 15-25% of the profit.
For example, an owner-operator agrees to move a load for $6000. A freight broker negotiates with the shipper for $7000 to do the trip. The margin of $1000 is the spread, goes directly to the freight broker.
A freight broker can be an individual or a company. When looking for one to partner with, it is recommended to find ones who are registered with the FMCSA and cover insurance costs. It is a great option for beginner owner-operators who are yet to get a strong foothold in the industry. It is important to have clarity regarding the impact of the spread on the profits made for a business.
Dispatchers
A dispatcher manages the flow of the freight for efficient movement of the truck load. This is done by avoiding empty miles in the trips. Doing so helps in maximizing profits for owner-operators. One of the keys to smooth functioning of this service is constant communication with the owner-operator. A dispatcher ensures compliance and usually provides customer service. In addition to finding loads for the owner-operator, dispatchers also aid in various backend operations. This includes all associated paperwork like tax records, permits, insurance, etc. Some dispatchers provide end to end services. This means the dispatcher takes care of finding and managing the loads, as well as ensuring timely payment from the shipper. The fee is charged either at a flat rate, or as a certain percentage of the load. An owner-operator can hire an individual dispatcher or a trucking dispatch service provider. This is another way for owner operators to find truck loads.
Government Contracts
Federal, state, and local governments often outsource their transportation requirements. To be considered as an option for moving government loads, an owner-operator has to register on the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) website as a company. Registering as a government contractor can help an owner-operator find loads in their own city/area. Obtaining contracts can vary depending upon the security clearance required for winning the bids. A contract with government entities like the US postal service or getting the business’ name on the GSA list can bring in steady work-flow and also offer great pay. Government contracts are a great option for finding loads for an owner operator.
Prospecting
Prospecting is the continual process of finding loads. It revolves around researching shippers in the local area. The owner-operator should research the number of shippers, the kind of loads needed to move, destinations catered to, etc. This will help the owner-operator determine a prospect shipper to get loads from. The process requires the owner-operator to connect with the prospect shipper by reaching out to them. In the communication, an owner-operator can enquire about the shipper’s requirement and any trips suitable for the owner-operator to undertake. It also helps in finding any future opportunities that the shipper might offer. This requires a bit more work for the owner operator but also provides a good opportunity to find more loads.
Networking
Just like any other business, networking can be a key step for ensuring an owner-operator’s visibility and possible growth in the industry. Creating friendships can lead to prospective clients. Getting involved in associations like the American Association of Owner Operators (AAOO) or other local events can help in professional connections that may be a great pathway for getting loads. It not only helps in staying informed about news in the trucking industry, but also helps in tips and guidelines to grow business.Owner operators should choose a strategy or combination of strategies above to determine what works best for the business. At first, an owner-operator might not have a lot of load options to choose from. The owner-operator may have to take up any available job to keep the business running. Though overwhelming at first, it gets easier with each trip. Owner Operators need the best technology and ELD Mandate provides some of the best products from Asset Trackers, Dash Cams, ELDs, Tablets and Data for all owner operators.

Lines Blur Between Venezuelan Dystopia and Caribbean Cyberpunk
source
Right in the borders of Pueblo Nuevo, under the shadows cast by a brutalist building, it’s common to find barefoot teenagers holding blankets covered with cellphones over a decade old. They trade them for food or more electronic junk.
Meanwhile, soldiers on a nearby truck check citizen’s fingerprints and QR codes ofcarnets de la patria to sell regulated products. On the background, the rhythm of the trap bass (banned on radio stations and only available on the Internet) creates the perfect tropical cyberpunk atmosphere, where people talk about buying bananas with cryptocurrencies or electronic money transfers.
In Venezuela, the lack of access to basic services is becoming more frequent. Water and transportation may not be easy to find, but technology and the expansion of the digital era represent a fundamental part in Venezuelans’ lives. It is also one of the main devices used by chavismo for propaganda and control, as it’s a space without any defined legislation, a fertile wasteland for illegality.
The captahuellas, a biometric control implemented by the State to regulate food, subsidies and services, aims to turn the human body into a sign over. On her paper “The Body as Data”, the Venezuelan lawyer and activist Marianne Díaz says: “Biometry aims to delimit a space for legality and illegality, allowing the State to establish the boundaries between the ‘wanted’ and ‘unwanted’, (…) while providing a social benefit (…). The main purpose for implementing this type of system is the creation of limits of exclusion to grant or deny people’s rights”, thus violating not only the autonomy over our own body, but coercing us into surrendering to these mechanisms because otherwise, we would become pariahs of the system.
As I walk through a crowded street, I lean in front of an informal stand covered with broken cellphones, burned out electric stoves and light bulbs. I ask one of the boys who polishes touchscreens if I can take a picture of him. He says no, holding my gaze with a sharp gesture of reprobation: clearly, most of the spare parts he’s working with are stolen. However, I dare to ask one more question: “What’s your newest device?”, “Samsung S5, unrestricted” he replies. It’s a 2014 mobile. The economic crisis has restrained Venezuelans’ access to technology, while increasing the fear to acquire it due to the risk of being robbed or murdered for it. The boy doesn’t hesitate to haggle its price in USD or Paypal transfers
I leave through a narrow lane that leads to the 20th St., and I reach an old and small cybercafé. It has been days since I had a trustworthy internet connection in my apartment. I log in to check my email and my Twitter account. Next to me, a couple of teenagers divide the rows of old computers into two groups: The ones that play RPG online and the ones who check faucets. Both are payed activities.
A 16-year-old girl explains to me that faucets consist of watching publicity, making CAPTCHAs and reCAPTCHAs in exchange of small cryptocurrency based payments through virtual accounts. “Most pages pay in Satoshis (minimal unit of bitcoin) or in other currencies that we later change for dogecoins,” she says. These kids save cryptos in the cloud and trade them for strong fiat money. The girl assures that after a month doing it two or three times a week, she can make from 5 to 15 USD a month. In spite of severe governmental control and internet censorship, these kind of activities seem to determine many people’s survival
Organized crime uses technology as well. Criminal gangs as big as El Tren del Llano, or El Tren de Aragua post pictures or videos exhibiting weapons, hiring sicarios and, in the worst of cases, performing tortures and executions in their personal Instagram or Facebook accounts. They also use the digital trail provided by some apps to kidnap and extort people. Drones (forbidden in the country since 2016) work as their newnarcomulas and combat weapons. Kidnappers and arms dealers launder money through cryptos, shielded by the anonymity it offers.
I  leave the cybercafé and try to return home. I wait for a perrera, a dangerous way of provisional transportation. The driver talks to another passenger about the price of gas. The driver and the passenger agree: We will all have to get the carnet de la patria in order to live through this.
I live in the eroded limits of a post-industrial dystopia, one that was promised as a tech paradise but, in the end, it has barely reached the 21st century because of its stubborn totalitarian anachronism. Of course, this looked better in books and movies. It’s terrifying to watch it happen while riding a kennel-truck, through a silent city that looks empty before night falls.

Privacy Protection through Biometric Data Protection
Misuse of Biometrics Infringes on Privacy
Biometrics are becoming commonplace in today’s cybersecurity practices, especially in authentication. Companies are collecting various types of databases filled with employee and customer biometric data ranging from a person’s walking gait to their voice patterns, retina scans, facial data, fingerprints, and even DNA. These databases can be used for single purposes, like authenticating access, or for large-scale surveillance, like in China (Ng, 2020). Misuse of biometric data can severely threaten human privacy, even if it wasn’t stolen. For example, the Chinese government log over 6.8 million records of people over the age of 8 in their country. They actively use their facial recognition technology and data to find, detain, and watch Uyghur Muslims in and after re-education concentration camps (Ng, 2020).
Stolen biometrics are just as concerning, especially if the data is posted publicly. In August, 2019, one of the largest biometric companies in the world, Biostar2, was breached (Ikeda, 2019). About 28 million biometric records were posted, unencrypted, on a public website. These included facial recognition profiles, fingerprint scans, and log in credentials (Ikeda, 2019). Anyone could use these to enter a building, unlock a phone, or make a fake ID, and they still can because a person can’t change their face or fingerprint like they would a password. Once a person’s biometric data is available to the public, it will always be public. This makes biometric data one of the most sensitive and critical to keep secure. Concerned System Administrators are justified in finding advanced protective techniques to keep biometric data safe from people who would misuse it.
Techniques to Protect Biometric Data
The best defense is to use multiple layers of the newest technology and algorithms. The following techniques are ones currently in practice, but it should be noted that none are used alone. For example, a biometric database that uses blockchain, a virtual machine monitoring system, and a correct RFID scan before giving a user access is much safer than one using just a single method.
Merkle Tree Blockchain
Blockchain, a type of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), is the technique of having devices in a connection share a new encrypted key between each link, as if in a chain (Alruwaili, 2020). These keys act as a device, and user’s, authentication for the duration of their session, which is inevitably closed. When the connection is severed, the session keys are discarded. The devices in the link can act as a record for transactions, which helps with auditing. This technique also allows for privacy because only the end device needs to know the Personal Identification Information (PII) for authentication, while all other devices in the chain only need to trust its neighbors, so the PII isn’t handed off through devices. Furthermore, if any of the keys are altered, like in a (wo)man-in-the-middle attack, the chain is broken.
Blockchain works best in what’s called a “Merkle Tree”, which is simply setting up a network’s logical connection in a hierarchical map (Kou, He, Xiong, & Lv, 2020). Privileged and Administrative users are at the top of the “tree” and are fewer in number. Lower down, the structure fans out as different and separate sections are connected, containing department heads and regular users. Combining Blockchain with the Merkle Tree model lets networks grant access based on roles and levels. The higher a system is on a tree, the more permissions it has (Kou, He, Xiong, & Lv, 2020). This would, for example, grant access downward, but not upward, as a System Administrator would need encrypted connection to a user, but a regular user shouldn’t have privileged access to a network server or database.
Multifactor Authentication
At an “end point”, the last device between a connection and a user, final authentication methods need to assure the correct human is asking to connect (Shalaby, Gad, Hemdan, & El-Fishawy, 2021). Physical barriers also need to be able to know whether to unlock or let someone through. Giving the wrong person access to a device or building can wreak catastrophic results. “Multifactor Authentication” simply means testing a person’s legitimacy and identity in more ways than one. It can be something someone has, something they know, something they are, or somewhere they are. Biometrics obviously cover what a person is, and something a person knows is usually a password (Shalaby, Gad, Hemdan, & El-Fishawy, 2021).
Two of the most current popular Multifactor Authentication methods are phone applications and RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification. A phone application can act as something someone has, where they are, and what they know, because the users phone is a unique item only they should have, the geolocation of the device in use should match where the user should be, and to unlock and approve the push notification, the user needs to know their pin to unlock the phone, and then the pin to approve the notification. A bank, for example, can approve authentication through the banks mobile app on the user’s phone as well as iris recognition software at ATM locations, before letting them access an account or withdraw money (Shalaby, Gad, Hemdan, & El-Fishawy, 2021).
RFID badges are usually given to employees as cards on lanyards and, while they can be stolen, work well as an extra step in the authentication process. These cards usually come with a photo ID and microchip with user data that fills into access logs and checks certain constraints (Fu, 2020). For example, a person may look like an employee, have stolen their RFID badge, and gotten through the front door, but if it’s after 6PM, the turnstile might reject admission because that employee is only allowed to enter during work hours.
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence is a program given networking power based off decision trees and real-time data (Alruwaili, 2020). This means that the running software will work its way through “if-then” scenarios to reach choices depending on what information it’s given. These decision routes can be set in a way that covers future scenarios that make the program appear to “adapt” in a way to new situations. This can be used to make sure an employee is entering at the correct time of day, as mentioned before, or even to determine whether a digital certificate should be issued, as with Blockchain (Alruwaili, 2020).
Another highlight is creating a decentralized governance in a network by making several of these programs which only allow data or a user through to the next AI if certain conditions are met (Alruwaili, 2020). This way, an attacker wanting Facebook’s facial recognition technology, used to automatically suggest tagging friends, can’t simply fool one program to gain access. This technique is one of the best options because code can be obfuscated and as many separate layers as wanted can be set up in defense. This can be further extended by putting each AI on a different device in a logical network (Alruwaili, 2020). Other variants of this technique are Virtual Machine Monitoring and Fog Computing. Virtual Machines are separated systems that can take and compare snapshots of devices in a network, keeping an eye out for intruders (Nirmala, & Muthurajkumar, 2020). Fog Computing is the strengthening of authentication techniques in nodes, which are devices between endpoint devices and cloud systems, or internet spanning networks (Fog Computing vs. Cloud Computing: Key Differences | SaM Solutions, 2019).
Doubling Down on Biometrics
If a company has one type of biometric for their customers, they may consider using another type of biometric for their employees. That way, they have a smaller database to keep from imposters, and a separate kind of data to protect from cyber intrusions. For example, an employee might have to pass a fingerprint and iris scan, along with one or two of the previously mentioned layers of protection, in order to have access to a facial recognition database. This way, employee records aren’t saved with customer records, and certainly aren’t protected in the same way. The redundancy of using the same biometric to access biometrics is best explained with the Multifactor Authentication theory (Shalaby, Gad, Hemdan, & El-Fishawy, 2021). For example, it’s unsafe to unlock something someone knows using something someone knows, like being given a password in exchange for just a person’s date of birth and nothing else.
As with every technique given, biometrics, even to protect other biometrics, work best mixed and diversified with other practices. For example, biometrics can be used to produce a session key, which cannot be stolen or reproduced because the same biometric is required to open the session again (Kim, Wang, & Seo, 2020). Paired with Post-Quantum Cryptography, cryptography created to be resistant to quantum algorithms, this kind of authentication is fast and secure.
Conclusion
Whether it’s systemic abuse of biometric data, thieves impersonating victims of breaches, or a government employee’s fingerprints being posted online, the misuse of biometric data is an unacceptable consequence of a vulnerable network. Several layers of the newest techniques, technology, and algorithms are the backbone of a network’s defense and offense. This data can be abused and reused because a person can’t change their biometrics. So as the use of biometrics grows, the concern for privacy should as well.

Essential Features to Look for in an Electronic Logging System (ELS)
In today's competitive transportation landscape, efficiency and compliance are paramount. Electronic Logging Systems (ELS) have become a game-changer, replacing paper logbooks and streamlining Hours of Service (HOS) tracking for drivers. But with a vast array of ELS options available, choosing the right system can feel overwhelming.
This blog post will guide you through the essential features to look for in an Electronic Logging System (ELS) to ensure it meets your specific needs and maximizes your fleet's potential.
Core Compliance Functionalities
. Automated HOS Tracking: The cornerstone of any ELS is its ability to automatically capture and record driver activity. Look for a system that seamlessly tracks on-duty, off-duty, driving, and sleeper berth time, ensuring compliance with federal regulations.
. Alerts and Notifications: Proactive alerts are crucial for preventing HOS violations. The ELS should warn drivers when approaching their maximum allowable driving time and notify fleet managers of potential compliance issues.
. Data Transfer and Reporting: Easy access to driver logs and fleet data is essential. The ELS should allow for effortless download and export of data in formats compatible with regulatory agencies for inspections and audits.
User-Friendly Interface and Functionality
. Intuitive Design: A user-friendly interface is key for driver adoption. The ELS should be easy to navigate, with clear menus and functions that minimize training time and ensure accurate data entry.
. Mobile Compatibility: Drivers spend most of their time on the road. Look for an ELS with a mobile app that allows drivers to access their logs, view duty status, and submit any necessary documentation electronically.
. Multilingual Support: If your fleet operates in diverse regions, an ELS with multilingual support can be a valuable asset. This caters to a wider driver base and reduces the risk of misunderstandings.
Advanced Features for Enhanced Efficiency
. GPS Tracking and Route Optimization: Integrating GPS technology with the ELS enables real-time vehicle location tracking. This allows for better route planning, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced dispatch capabilities.
. IFTA Reporting and Fuel Management: Some ELS options offer built-in tools for calculating and filing International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) reports. Additionally, fuel usage data can be analyzed to identify areas for improvement and optimize fuel consumption.
. Vehicle Diagnostics and Maintenance Reminders: Advanced ELS systems can integrate with vehicle telematics, providing real-time insights into vehicle health. This allows for proactive maintenance scheduling, preventing costly breakdowns and maximizing vehicle uptime.
Integration and Data Security
. Open Architecture: An ELS with an open architecture allows for seamless integration with existing fleet management software and other business applications. This streamlines data flow and eliminates the need for manual data entry.
. Cloud-Based Storage: Cloud storage ensures data availability anytime, anywhere, and provides an extra layer of security in case of hardware failure. Look for a system with robust security protocols to protect sensitive driver and fleet data.
. Driver Feedback and Performance Tracking: Some ELS options offer features for collecting driver feedback and monitoring performance metrics like speeding or idling. This data can be used for targeted coaching and continuous improvement initiatives.
Choosing the right Electronic Logging System (ELS) is an investment that can significantly enhance your fleet's efficiency and compliance. By prioritizing the features outlined above, you can ensure you select a system that aligns perfectly with your unique needs and propels your business towards success.
