Designing for the Senses: How to Make Your Space Feel as Good as It Looks
A beautifully designed space is more than just visually pleasing—it should feel good to the touch, smell inviting, and even sound soothing. Designing for the senses means creating an environment that appeals to all of your senses, not just your eyes. By engaging sight, touch, sound, smell, and even taste, you can turn your space into a true sanctuary that nourishes both body and mind.
In this blog, we’ll explore how to design a home that isn’t just aesthetically beautiful but also a sensory experience that feels just as good as it looks.

1. Engage the Sense of Touch with Cozy Textures
The feeling of a soft fabric against your skin or the texture of a smooth surface under your hand can elevate your space from ordinary to exceptional. Soft, tactile elements make a room feel inviting and comfortable, encouraging you to linger and relax.
Layering Textures: Mix and match fabrics to create a sense of depth. Think plush velvet cushions, cozy wool throws, and a soft cotton rug underfoot. Add textured elements like woven baskets, knitted blankets, or suede pillows to create an inviting tactile experience.
Furniture Choices: Opt for tactile materials like leather, velvet, linen, or soft cotton for your upholstery. A velvet chair or a soft linen sofa invites you to sit and relax, while wooden furniture adds a natural, grounding texture to the space.
Why It Works: Touch plays a critical role in how we interact with our environment. By adding soft, cozy textures, you create an inviting atmosphere that feels comfortable and relaxing.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget the floor! Adding an area rug with a soft texture or warm materials like wool or sheepskin underfoot will make the entire room feel more inviting.
2. Create a Soundscape: Design for Calm and Connection
Sound is an often-overlooked element of interior design, but it plays a huge role in how we experience a space. The right sound can make a room feel tranquil and calming, while noise can disrupt the peaceful atmosphere.
Soft Furnishings for Acoustic Comfort: Plush rugs, heavy curtains, and upholstered furniture all help absorb sound and reduce echo, creating a more peaceful environment. By adding fabrics into your space, you naturally improve the acoustics.
Soothing Sounds: Consider adding elements like a sound machine, a water fountain, or even playing ambient music to fill the room with calming sounds. These elements can help mask background noise and set a serene tone.
Silence: Sometimes, the absence of sound is equally important. Create quiet spaces by reducing distractions—turn off the TV, unplug electronics, and keep the atmosphere still and serene.
Why It Works: Sound affects our mood and stress levels. Soft, harmonious sounds can create a calming ambiance, while cluttered, noisy environments can make us feel tense. Curating your soundscape helps create a space that nurtures relaxation.
Pro Tip: Try adding a few plants to help absorb sound and improve acoustics. Tall plants, like fiddle leaf figs, can act as natural sound buffers while adding life to your space.
3. Appeal to the Sense of Smell with Fragrances
The sense of smell is one of the most powerful when it comes to influencing mood and memory. A pleasant scent can make your space feel welcoming, fresh, and even energizing. Scented candles, diffusers, and natural air fresheners can all help create a signature scent that becomes part of your home's identity.
Scented Candles or Diffusers: Choose scents that match the mood you want to create. Floral and citrus scents are great for energizing spaces like the kitchen or living room, while lavender, eucalyptus, and sandalwood work well in bedrooms and bathrooms for relaxation.
Natural Scents: Try bringing in fresh flowers or herbs like rosemary, mint, or basil. These natural scents can freshen the air and add a touch of greenery to your home.
Air Purifiers: Not only do they improve the air quality, but some air purifiers come with essential oil diffusers to add a subtle, ongoing fragrance that cleans the air and uplifts your space.
Why It Works: Smell is closely linked to memory and emotion. A home that smells inviting, fresh, and calming can instantly make you feel more comfortable and at ease.
Pro Tip: Rotate scents throughout the year based on seasons—think warm vanilla and cinnamon in the winter, and fresh citrus or lavender in the spring and summer.

4. Play with Color and Lighting for a Visually Pleasing Experience
We often focus on color and lighting from a purely aesthetic standpoint, but these elements also influence how a space feels on a sensory level. The right lighting and color palette can make a room feel brighter, warmer, or more relaxing.
Warm Lighting: Use soft, warm-toned lighting to create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Layer your lighting with table lamps, floor lamps, or wall sconces to eliminate harsh overhead lights. Dimmers are a great way to adjust lighting levels depending on your mood or time of day.
Natural Light: Maximize natural light where possible, as it enhances your mood and energy. Open your windows, use sheer curtains to diffuse the light, and place mirrors to reflect sunlight and make the space feel more expansive.
Color Psychology: Choose colors that support the mood you want to create. Soft blues, greens, and neutrals are calming, while brighter colors like yellow and coral add energy. Warm tones like terracotta and gold can make a room feel cozy and inviting.
Why It Works: Sight is the first sense we rely on when entering a space. A well-lit room with colors that complement the atmosphere you want to create can dramatically enhance the mood and energy of a space.
Pro Tip: Layer your lighting with a combination of ambient (overhead), task (reading lamps), and accent lighting (sconces or picture lights) to create a balanced, inviting atmosphere.
5. Add Flavor: How Taste Can Influence Your Space
While taste might not be something you can directly design for, it plays an essential role in how we experience a space, especially in areas like the kitchen or dining room. The smells and flavors of your food can transform an environment from a place for sustenance to a sensory experience.
Fresh Ingredients: Keep fresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables in the kitchen for both their visual appeal and their fragrance. A bowl of lemons or a fresh herb garden can make your kitchen feel vibrant and inviting.
Flavored Drinks: Invest in a coffee station, tea corner, or bar cart to create an experience around taste. Having a designated space for enjoying your favorite drink not only adds a sensory ritual but can also become a welcoming element for guests.
Why It Works: Engaging taste in your design, especially around food, adds another layer to the sensory experience. A well-curated kitchen or dining space can enhance the way you enjoy meals, making the entire space feel more inviting.
Pro Tip: Experiment with aromatic spices or fresh herbs in the kitchen to elevate the sensory experience of cooking. A small herb garden on the windowsill or fresh flowers on the dining table can enhance both the visual and olfactory appeal of the space.
Conclusion: A Home That Stimulates All Your Senses
When you design for all five senses, you create a space that feels harmonious and nurturing. By focusing on textures that invite touch, lighting that creates mood, sounds that soothe, smells that refresh, and even tastes that delight, you elevate your home from a place to live into a sanctuary for the soul.
Next time you walk into your home, take a moment to tune into all of your senses. Does the room feel warm and inviting? Is the lighting soft and comfortable? Does the air smell fresh? By considering how each element of your home engages your senses, you can curate a space that not only looks beautiful but feels just as good.

Dani visits the human world and notices some things that have changed since the last time she was there.
Phic Phight Prompt by @idiot-cheesehead-archenemy
Summary: What is there to say?
Dani slipped through the Fenton portal into the world of the living, and was immediately greeted by the feeling of cool air on her skin. She took a deep breath, hovering invisibly in the middle of the lab and slowly cherishing the sensation of fresh, living air filling her lungs.
The lab was… quiet. She frowned and spun on the spot, confirming that she was the only person there. The monitors lining the benches were dull, and there were no typical flashing lights or whirring electronics. The only illumination came from the portal. Dani didn’t know a lot about other people’s labs, but Vlad’s had always been full of soft noise, as machines hummed and blipped little tunes that had always soothed her back to sleep.
She pushed the memory away. Maybe the Fentons’ lab was just quiet when nobody was there? After all, it wasn’t like there were growing life forms that needed constant support and monitoring.
Still. It didn’t quite seem to fit the glimpses of this place that she’d had in the past, no matter how fleeting they’d been.
She phased through the ceiling, and the darkness was replaced by soft natural light that streamed through open windows. The glimpse of sunlight struck her with unexpected surprise, and Dani hissed in a sharp breath as her core hummed deep within her centre. She suddenly wanted nothing more than to fly out into the open sky, feeling the wind in her hair and the sun soaking into her skin for the first time in… wait, how long had it actually been?
She frowned, scrunching her face as she tried to track how long she’d been in the Ghost Zone. Surely it hadn’t been more than a few months, right?
Shaking her head to clear it, she glanced around the living room. Unease prickled down her spine, dampening her good mood, but Dani couldn’t quite place what was wrong. There was that same old couch and rug, a TV against one wall, and framed photos lining the mantelpiece.
She was surprised that Danny hadn’t appeared yet. Shouldn’t she have set off his ghost sense by now?
Dani’s heart pounded against her ribcage as she floated up again, phasing through the floor of Danny’s bedroom…
This was Danny’s room, right? No, she must have misjudged the layout of the home. It appeared to be a guest room, with a plain mattress devoid of blankets or sheets on the bed frame, and empty shelves lining the walls with a clear desk tucked in the corner. The curtains were drawn, but they were so threadbare that there was no problem seeing in the bright daylight that shone right through.
She phased through the wall, and ended up in a room with a decidedly teal colour scheme. The curtains were closed in here too but enough light filtered through to make out the details anyway. It was as neat as one of those pictures of perfect homes in magazines, and the framed high school diploma above the study alcove suggested that the room belonged to Jazz. Or… it had? The air felt stale and dusty, like nobody had been in here in a while. Dani drifted over to the dresser and ran her finger across the top, coming away with a fine layer of dust.
She pinched her lower lip between her teeth. Jazz had been pretty close to graduation when Dani had gone into the Ghost Zone, so maybe she was at university now?
Yeah. That made sense.
Unease settled more densely over her, and Dani phased through the wall again. She passed through the linen cupboard and a bathroom in desperate need of a good clean, and then found herself in what was obviously Danny’s parents’ room. This one finally appeared to be lived in, with the duvet crumpled and left unmade, and glasses of water on bedside tables. The curtains were open in here, and the air felt fresher and less dead.
Dani didn’t really want to poke around through Maddie and Jack’s stuff, so she phased back out into the hallway. She tilted her head, scowling as she counted the doors in the hallway.
There were exactly five — one for each bedroom, and one for the bathroom and the linen cupboard.
Dread dropped into her gut, like she’d suddenly swallowed a bowling ball, and Dani crept back into the first room. She pulled back the curtains, and dust motes swirled in the beams of sunlight as the room was fully illuminated. She stood in the middle of the carpet, turning in a slow circle and reaching out tentatively with her core.
There were slightly darker rectangles on the wall where there used to be posters of star charts and band tours, and when she tilted her head back, Dani could just make out the tiny silhouettes where glow in the dark stars had once been stuck to the ceiling and the white paint had faded around them.
She couldn’t sense any other ghosts beside herself. There wasn’t so much as a glimmer of residual spectral activity aside from the steady hum of the portal two floors beneath her.
“Where are you?” she whispered into the still emptiness.
Maybe… maybe she’d been gone longer than she’d thought. Maybe Danny had graduated and gone to college too. She didn’t think he’d have abandoned Amity Park, but maybe he’d moved out with Tucker, or finally gotten together with Sam or Valerie and was living with them? She didn’t really know much about his friends, but that seemed like the kind of thing they’d do, especially if Danny’s parents didn’t know his secret yet. He was probably just too far across town for her to sense.
Dani shot up through the ceiling and broke into the open air. The sunlight enveloped her with sudden life, and despite everything she smiled and gave a deep sigh. The Ghost Zone had been interesting, and it certainly helped to keep her core stable, but her human half delighted in the chance to soak in the energy of the mortal world once more.
Making sure that she stayed invisible, Dani floated above the town in a huge, lazy loop, feeling for any sign of Danny. There was a gentle breeze, and she revelled in the way it stirred her hair and brushed against her exposed skin.
By the time she’d returned to Fentonworks, the contentment of being in the human world had once again been overrun by anxiety.
Dani debated dropping by Valerie’s house, before realising that she didn’t actually know where it was. She scowled, but after a moment of thought began to fly across the town again, this time with a clear destination in mind.
She touched down in the parking lot behind the library, using invisibility to mask herself as she changed into her human form before walking through the front doors just like any normal kid. Nobody even glanced her way, and Dani sidled over to the row of thick computer screens that buzzed almost imperceptibly and played screensavers of what looked like photos of community events. She picked the screen furthest from the library desk, as far away from prying eyes as possible but when she nudged the mouse the screensaver was replaced with a screen prompting her to log in.
Dani frowned and looked toward the desk. She didn’t have a card, but she didn’t really want to sign up for one either. Didn’t you need ID for that kind of thing?
An older man sat down at a vacant computer close to hers, and Dani slid out of her seat and casually strolled to the bookshelf behind him. She pretended to be scanning the titles while he slowly used pointed index fingers to tap out his login details, and Dani carefully repeated the details in her mind as she grabbed a random book and headed back to her seat. Her screen had jumped back to the screensaver, and she doubted that she could log in while the man was already suing his account, so she surreptitiously turned to the back of her book and used a glowing fingertip to etch the man’s username and password into the bottom corner of the final page. She flipped back to the front cover again and raised an eyebrow at the yellow smiley face and the large self-help title in raised gold block letters.
Oh, well. Whatever.
Dani thumbed through her book, skimming through some of the tips in the organisational section while surreptitiously stealing glances at the man on the nearby computer. Her fingers almost itched with anticipation but she held herself steady.
It didn’t take him long to leave, and Dani could only hope that he hadn’t used up all of the allotted time on his account for the day. She flipped back to the details and typed them in, relief pulling a sigh from deep within her as the computer opened up to its main desktop page. The little timer in the top corner indicated that the account still had twenty minutes, so she pushed the book aside and opened the web browser straight away.
It only took a few seconds to log into Facebook, and Dani felt a twinge of guilt at the sheer amount of notifications. She was tempted to check them now, but the steady timer in the corner reminded her to focus and she clicked into the messenger webpage instead.
There were only two conversations — one from Danny, and the other from Valerie. Val’s were bolded and unread, but Danny’s…
Dani chewed her lip and brushed overlong bangs out of her face, trying to fight through the sudden heart-wrenching betrayal of abandonment.
Danny’s last message to her had been over a year ago, the day she left for the Ghost Zone.
She quickly opened the conversation, double checking that yes, he hadn’t messaged her since she’d left. It didn’t make sense. This was their only form of communication when she wasn’t in town! Did he really think so little of her, that he wouldn’t message her so that she’d have something to come back to? Was she really just a clone to him after all?
That last thought stopped her anger in its tracks. Danny would never think that.
She took a deep, grounding breath, and opened the unread messages from Valerie.
There wasn’t much there, but what Danielle did see turned her blood to ice.
How could I have known when neither of you ever told me?!
I’m sorry
Please, Danielle, I’m sorry!
I didn’t mean it
You have to know I didn’t mean it
I never would have done it if I’d just KNOWN!
I’m sorry
Dani swallowed, hard. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard but for a long moment she just stared at the screen.
She clicked back into her conversation with Danny. The last time he’d messaged her was only a few days before that frantic barrage from Valerie.
Just make sure you stay away from Skulker!
Frostbite will help you if you need it
Or Pandora
At the time, she was amused by his overprotectiveness. Yeah I know. See you later!
He’d responded cheerfully, but then had never messaged her again.
Okay
Stay safe!
I hope you have a blast
She read it again, and panic crept into her core. “No,” she breathed, and clicked back to Facebook’s main page, searching up Danny’s account.
The latest posts were birthday wishes from two months ago.
Dani scrolled down, numb horror cocooning her thoughts. The posts made by his friends and family all blurred together into a collage of soft wishes of peace and somber murmurs of sadness. Below his birthday wishes were a collection of posts from four months ago, and Dani’s hands trembled as she read every single one.
Sixteen months.
The ambient sounds of the library faded into static as she realised that Danny Fenton had been dead and buried for sixteen months.
She swallowed past the sudden tightness in her throat, and it was like fighting past hands that were clenched around her neck. Dani’s eyes burned and she dragged in a shallow breath, sharp with the strain of fighting back tears.
They slipped down her cheeks anyway, and she sniffed and took another strained breath, clicking into her messages once more.
She didn’t know what to say, but Dani knew she had to say something. It wasn’t right, to just leave him hanging like that.
Her hands clenched in her lap, and Dani rubbed the water off her face only to have more tears fall straight away. A sob clawed its way out of her throat and she pressed her fist over her mouth, muffling it as much as she could.
People were looking at her now, and she ducked her head and tried to hold everything in.
This wasn’t fair. How could she have let this happen? How could she have left him?
How could he have left her?
She clenched her teeth together. As tempting as it was to post on his page, she didn’t want to be public about it. What right did she have anyway, to freshly grieve him when he’d already been gone for so long? What right did she have to message his friends, who she barely knew, or his family, who she had never even met?! How could she drag them into her existence when it’d just dredge up the rawness all over again?!
Dani realised that she’d tensed her body so much that she was trembling with the effort and had forgotten to breathe. She took a shaky breath, and her tight muscles snapped into a loud, hiccupping cry.
Gritting her teeth again, tears streaming down her cheeks and dripping into her mouth and off her chin, Dani typed three words into the private message chat box.
I’m so sorry.
She closed the browser, and the screen went black and flicked back to the login screen as the timer hit zero.
Grief crashed into her with the force of a tsunami and Dani pressed her palms over her eyes and wept. Huge, gasping sobs tore from her chest, making her gut ache as her pulse roared in her ears.
“Miss? Are you okay?”
It was probably the stupidest question she’d ever heard, and Dani shook her head mutely, keeping her hands over her eyes as the tears continued to flood through her fingers and snot began to drip from her nose.
Someone nudged her shoulder. “Here,” the same voice offered, and Dani peeked through her fingers to see a tissue box. She squinted up at the librarian, and the tears kept flowing like a tap that had been left running.
Dani pressed her lips together and nodded once, grabbing a handful of tissues and immediately burying her face in them as she was hit by a fresh wave of grief. She knew that eventually she’d have to move, she’d have to stop crying and take the next step, but for now all that mattered was the way her head throbbed with every sob and how her eyes burned hotter and hotter the more she cried. She couldn’t breathe deeper than short, shallow gasps, and every time she tried to think, all she could picture was Danny’s face and her world came crashing down again.
It took her a long time to stop crying, but when she did she was left staring at the pile of soaking tissues next to the keyboard as the bright halogen lights made her eyes sting.
She had no clue what to do now.
He was dead, and she didn’t even get to say goodbye.

The Big Scary What-If
Was going through old files and whoops! I found a whole bonus scene I wrote and never posted. So... here ya go!
Spoilers under the cut for the near-end of the story!
This scene takes place around the vicinity of pages 114-116. For those who don’t remember (it’s been a while!), Deimos has been defeated, the gang is back together, and they’re taking a few days to fix the Time Crystal.
Havve’s optics blinked, taking in the small form of Meouch sitting curled up on the couch. It was midnight--rather, it would have been midnight if they had been on Earth--and his three boys should’ve all been in bed. “You’re supposed to be asleep,” he said, keeping his volume down for the sake of the others.
“I know,” Meouch said, seemingly having fully expected that from Havve. “I can’t stop thinking, though.”
Havve could have sighed and sent him off to bed anyway--if Meouch could think out here, in front of the muted TV playing intergalactic infomercials, then he could think in his room--but he didn’t. He sat down next to Meouch and got comfortable, leaning back and lacing his fingers together over his stomach. “What’re you thinking about?”
“It’s nothing,” Meouch said, shrugging one shoulder. “I mean, it’s… Y’know.”
“Clearly it’s not nothing,” Havve retorted, “if it’s keeping you up half the night.”
“It’s…” Meouch sighed. He crossed his arms over his chest and burrowed his hands inside the sleeves of his t-shirt. He looked at the TV, defeated. “It’s stupid.”
“I bet it’s not,” Havve said. Meouch didn’t look at him, eyes vacantly stuck on the infomercial in front of him. Havve sighed then, a tinny, half-real, half-robotic sound. “You can talk to me, you know. I won’t judge. I mean… you’re a kid for crying out loud. Of course you’re worried about stuff you wouldn’t be normally.” Havve’s optics drifted to the TV for a moment (something about air fryers. He couldn’t believe they were still hawking that crap this far in the future), and then turned back to Meouch. “If something’s got you concerned, and you care about it, then that means it’s important. I won’t think it’s stupid. Okay?”
Meouch pursed his lips into a line. He blinked, his eyes reflecting the screen in front of them, and Havve realized he was trying to push back tears. “If we don’t fix this,” Meouch croaked, his voice rough and barely above a whisper, “if we have to grow up all over again from scratch… I did the math, Havve. I have the shortest lifespan here. I’m… I’m not gonna live to see Phobos and Sung get back to normal.”
The dam broke. It was quiet, Meouch still trying to hold himself together, but his eyes were gushing tears and his lips were trembling with cries trying to pry their way out. Havve sat up straighter and scooped him up, pulling Meouch into his chest and holding a hand on the back of his small head. Meouch choked out a high-pitched sob, muffled by Havve’s shirt. “Oh, bud. It’s okay. It’s okay,” he said, rubbing his thumb up and down on Meouch’s back. Havve couldn’t cry, as he didn’t have the eyes or the tear ducts necessary, but he could still feel his chest grow tight and his breath hitch in his half-metal throat. “It won’t come to that, I promise. We’ll fix this, Meouch. It’s okay.”
“I know. It’s like, so many what-ifs all piled on top of one another,” Meouch squeaked once he gained a little bit of his composure back. He sniffled, trying and failing to not get Havve’s shirt all wet. “Of course we’re gonna fix it. But I can’t get it out of my head, man. For fuck’s sake, Phobos is, what, twelve hundred years old? That's twice as old as I’ll ever be. I don’t wanna grow up and have him still be a little kid. I can’t, Havve, I can’t…”
“I know. God, if there’s anyone who understands that feeling, it’s me,” Havve said. “I honestly don’t mind taking care of you guys like this, but… I need you back, too. I can’t… rust away into nothing before Sung even hits puberty. I need you guys back.”
“Mm.” Meouch crawled further into Havve’s arms, burying his head in his hoodie and wrapping his arms tight around Havve’s chest. “I know they're gonna outlive me,” he muttered, barely audible. “I’ve always known that. S’just how shit goes. But I… They’re my… All of you are my best friends, and if we can’t tour together or do music together or just… hang out together without having to worry about babysitting… I can’t…”
Havve hummed in agreement, a strange mix of breath and white noise, making his chest vibrate. Meouch leaned into it, and Havve cradled him there. He needed this hug so bad that he was practically trying to crawl into Havve’s chest plate, and if Havve could have, he would’ve let him.
“I know you’ve prob’ly already been thinking about this a lot,” Meouch mumbled, his voice still wet and thick. “About what happens if the Time Crystal doesn’t poof us back to normal. This is old news for you. ‘M sorry.”
“Don’t apologize,” Havve shook his head. “You have nothing to be sorry about. There’s been so much going on… The whole thing with Phobos and Deimos… This is something we should’ve talked about days ago. The big shitty ‘what-if’ hanging over everyone’s heads. I hate it, you hate it, and no doubt Sung and Phobos hate it too. It’s hard to think about. Phobos is… tiny.” Havve ran his fingers gently through the fur on Meouch’s head, partly to soothe Meouch and partly to steady himself, and he spoke quietly, the bass of his speaker rumbling low in the top of his chest. “Seeing him get that small was… terrifying. I can’t imagine him staying that young for a hundred years. I don’t want to think about what that would do to him, what that would do to you or me… And Sung…”
“I don’t know how old he is,” Meouch whispered, “but he’s old old, isn’t he?”
“I can’t say.”
Meouch gripped the fabric of Havve’s shirt tighter, his small fingers digging into the warm metal of Havve’s stomach. “I know you know.”
Havve sighed. “I can’t say because that’s Sung’s secret to tell, not mine. But… yes, he’s old old. If he has to grow up again ‘from scratch’ as you called it… We’d all be long gone before he reached adulthood again.”
“God,” Meouch whimpered.
They sat there in the quiet for a good long while, letting it all sit. It was dark, save for the blue-light glow of the TV and the bright red of Havve’s optics, quiet save for the TV humming and Havve’s inner mechanisms humming and Meouch’s shaky, wet breaths. Havve could faintly feel himself starting to get a headache, something he rarely experienced. He could feel the pressure building up behind where his eyes used to be, in the little that remained of his sinuses, and he knew he would have shed a tear by then if he could have. Part of him wished that he could. The other part, the part that was holding a small, crying child in his arms, was relieved that he couldn’t. He needed to be strong, and sure, and confident that things were going to turn out okay. He needed to do that for Meouch, even if he was barely able to do it for himself right now.
"It’ll be okay,” Havve said, his voice louder and more confident coming from his speakers than it could’ve possibly been if it had come from his aching lungs. “We’ll get you guys back to normal. Hell, even Phobos’s little crystal shard is working on him already. You’ll all be back to normal in no time,” he said. “And no matter what happens, we have each other. I’ll always be there for you guys. And I know you’ll be there for me, too.”
“Yeah,” Meouch said, and then trailed off. His mouth hung open like he wanted to say something more, but then he closed it and swallowed. It took him a moment to find his voice again, and when he spoke, he lifted his face away from Havve’s chest and looked up at him. “You can say if you’re hurting, too. Your breathing’s all shallow, Havve, I can feel it.”
“Meouch… I’m okay, really,” Havve said. He wiped under one of Meouch’s eyes with a finger, brushing a fresh tear away from the streaks of already-wet fur.
“You just said that I’m here for you, too,” Meouch huffed. “Don’t lie to me. I’m not just a kid, man. I’m your friend, too.”
“I know you are,” Havve said. He felt something catch in his throat, something that maybe could have been a sob if he still had vocal chords to make the sound with. Running on long-forgotten instinct, his hand reached up under his mask and rubbed at one of his optics, as if that would relieve the pressure that was still building. “Seeing you cry like that, it just… I hate to see that. Makes me want to cry, too, even though I can’t.”
And then Meouch did what only a child would do: he pulled Havve’s mask off of his face, gently and with both hands, and then wiped the imaginary tears under his eyes with his thumb. “It’s okay, Havve,” he said, and Havve could’ve sworn he felt something break in the 808 drum machine where his heart used to be. The pressure built up harder, and he blinked uselessly to try and fight it off. “It’s okay.”
“Y’know,” Havve said, his robotic voice calm and steady even as his breathing was shaky and quick and his shoulders quaked, “I can only think of one other time when I wished I wasn’t a damn robot. You know what that was?”
“What?”
“Airport security,” he said, and then laughed a wet, shaky, electronically-tinged laugh. Meouch laughed too, the sad smile fighting its way onto his face. “Honestly, I like the way I am. Nine times out of ten, I wouldn’t want to be any other way. And I used to think x-rays and metal detectors and the post-9/11 TSA were just the banes of my existence. And they still are. But it’s shit like this. Shit where my body wasn’t built to handle having too many emotions inside of it. And god, since you three turned into kids?” He laughed again. “I swear, it’s like my Grinch heart grew three sizes and I have no place to put it all.”
Meouch smiled. “I heard being a dad’ll do that to you,” he said, and then hugged Havve even tighter, resting his head in the crook of Havve’s neck. “When Sung’s bigger, you should ask him to fix that for you. To make more room for your heart.”
“That is the cutest fucking thing I’ve ever heard,” Havve said, making Meouch burst out laughing. “No, I’m serious. That was such a triple-whammy. Each sentence was a one-hit KO. Why can’t you be this cute all the time?”
“Hmm, can’t be this cute when you’re that sexy,” Meouch hummed, and it was Havve’s turn to laugh. It relieved a little bit of the pressure, and he almost felt like he could take a deep breath again. “Once I get my mane back, it’s over for you fuckers. Cute adorable tiny Meouch will be no more, and sexy beast Meouch will reign supreme once again.”
Havve rested his head on Meouch’s shoulder, suddenly feeling exhausted. “Thank you.”
“Hey, no problem. I’m the one who got you all upset in the first place, so…”
“I think I was upset anyway. It was just hiding.”
“Oh,” Meouch said gently. “Then… You’re welcome. Wait, no, I should be thanking you! I was freaking out and now I’m not! How’d you do that?”
Havve chuckled, and they both knew he would’ve smiled if he could. “Secret dad powers,” he said simply. Meouch looked up at him and beamed. “Speaking of which, my dad powers are telling me that it’s way past your bedtime.”
“Aww, come on, no it’s not!” Meouch whined. “We were just getting somewhere! C’mon Havve, I’m not even tired.”
“You sure? Because I’m spe-ent,” Havve chimed. He stood up, bringing Meouch with him, and started carrying him back towards the bunks. “I need to recharge, and you need to get some sleep.”
“Fine,” Meouch said. His head was resting on Havve’s shoulder, and he was already quieting down. “I guess.”
Havve padded across the ship to Meouch’s room, and the door opened automatically as they got close. It was dark inside. Only Havve’s glowing red optics illuminated the space, showing off the piles of flannel shirts on the floor and the mess of charging cords by his bed. “You need to clean in here,” Havve said, and Meouch only replied with a hum and a small nod. He had gone from energetic to almost-asleep in just a couple of minutes. Seemed like the crying had finally caught up to him. Havve laid him down in bed, pulling his covers up to his chin. Meouch rolled over onto his side, burying his face in his pillow, and was out before he could even say “goodnight.”
Havve patted him on his head and tousled the small fluff of brown that was his mane. “Sweet dreams, bud,” he said softly, his volume just a notch above muted. “Everything’ll be fine. I promise.” He adjusted the blankets once more, stood up, and left Meouch’s room as quietly as he could. “I promise.”

Capt. Rock - “Cosmic Blast” Street Sounds Electro 6 by DJ Maurice & DJ Noel Song released in 1984. Mix released in 1985. Electro / Hip Hop
***Song starts at 5:49 and ends at 12:07***
I just wanna preface this long-ass post I had queued up for today to say rest in peace to MF DOOM, the greatest rapper of all time, bar none, and an incredible beatsmith, too. No one has ever had quite the incredible way with words that DOOM had or managed to cultivate the air of mysterious intrigue around themselves like he was able to with his mask. I saw him perform once at a festival in 2007 and I don’t even really know if it was actually him on that stage. It would’ve been one of the DOOM-iest moves to trot out an impostor to perform his own songs while he still got to collect that check; a move whose abject ballsiness you really can’t help but just chuckle at.
Fuck this year, royally, man.
A rhyming cannibal who's dressed to kill and cynical Whether is it animal, vegetable or mineral It's a miracle how he get so lyrical And proceed to move the crowd like a old negro spiritual
JUST REMEMBER, ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MAN NAME
*     *     *
There’s so much to dig into with this record, and I’m not even really sure where to even begin with this post, but I guess I’ll start with the Aleem twins, two (duh) enterprising guys from Harlem who loved all kinds of music. Born in the mid-40s, the Aleem twins got their musical education from many local sources. They frequented the Apollo Theater and then a legendary local gangster, Jack “Fat Man” Taylor, signed them to his label, Rojac Records. The Aleems didn’t go anywhere with Rojac, but they learned the ins and outs of running an independent record label and they also met the enigmatic Blowfly, who was an in-house writer for Rojac at the time. Through Taylor the Aleems also met Jimi Hendrix’s friend and love interest, Lithofayne “Faye” Pridgeon, who ended up hatching quite a scheme involving the Aleems and Hendrix.
Pridgeon wanted to get Hendrix evicted from his apartment, in which he lived with her friend June Vasquenza. So Pridgeon sent the Aleem twins to the apartment to kick him out, with one of them to claim that he was going to marry June in order to help her secure a green card since she was undocumented at the time. But the plan fell apart when the Aleems actually met Hendrix and discovered that the three of them all shared a deep passion for music. Rather than Hendrix being evicted, the trio would end up sharing an apartment together.
Hendrix would then ship off to Europe and become a superstar, but upon his return to Harlem, he kept close to the Aleems. They provided backing vocals on a number of Hendrix songs and they also promoted a street fair in Harlem that Hendrix headlined, which took place just a few weeks after his legendary performance at Woodstock. Hendrix had bigger plans for the Aleems, too; he was set on producing an album that they were planning, for which they would call themselves the Ghetto Fighters. Hendrix envisioned the album as a “street opera.”
But then in 1970, while in London, Jimi Hendrix tragically died, which, to say the least, put a really big crimp in the Aleems’ plans. However, they kept at it throughout the remainder of the 70s; they expanded their group to four members, including their sister, Juliette, changed their name to The Prana People, and got to be managed and financed by New York Knicks star, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe (Is this post New York enough for you yet?). In ‘77, the Prana People released their debut album, and in ‘79, the Aleem twins decided they wanted to move towards more of an electronic sound and ended up releasing a club hit called “Hooked on Your Love,” which stayed on the Billboard Dance chart for months and had both a barely known Jocelyn Brown and a young Luther Vandross on backing vocals.
Off of the success of that record and from being disillusioned by aspects of the music business, the Aleems decided to start their own independent label, NIA Records, which was to release disco, funk, soul, electro, and hip hop music.
Around this same time, Jack “Fat Man” Taylor, who now owned the famous Harlem World club, wanted to promote his neighborhood’s burgeoning hip hop scene, and in 1980 released a record called Rapper’s Convention, whose a-side featured a duo who would break off afterwards and call themselves Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde. A frequent patron of Harlem World was a guy named Ronnie Greene, and he would one day run into Mr. Hyde and convince him to make him Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde’s DJ.
Fast forward to 1982 and the Aleem twins are holding auditions to put out a new George Clinton and Tom Tom Club-influenced electro-funk-hip hop record called Cosmic Glide. It’s a record that introduces a main character, Captain Rock, who’s an extraterrestrial that just wants earthlings to get down to his space-funk jams. The Aleems and Mr. Hyde already had the song written and Mr. Hyde then brought Ronnie Greene in to audition to be Captain Rock. And even though Greene had never really rapped before, he managed to win the Aleems over with his smooth delivery, his cool and varied flows, and his swaggeringly captivating mic presence.
However, despite it being a quality tune, “Cosmic Glide” didn’t perform all that well. But the next Captain Rock record, 1983′s The Return Of Capt. Rock, again written by Mr. Hyde and the Aleem twins, fared much better, and also became the first record to really earn a name for the NIA label. This new bit of fame for both Greene and NIA then allowed for the third and fourth Captain Rock records, respectively 1984′s Capt. Rock To The Future Shock and Cosmic Blast, to flourish. “Cosmic Blast” became both Captain Rock’s biggest and best hit and it also marked Ronnie Greene’s musical peak. Mr. Hyde had moved on to do other things, so the Aleems allowed Greene to write the song’s lyrics and they also involved him in the production process.
Not long before “Cosmic Blast” was recorded, Doug E. Fresh, who was also a Harlem resident, had released a record called The Original Human Beat Box, and that was a record that was simply fly as fuck. It put Doug’s deft skills as a beatboxer on full display, and it also gave Ronnie Greene the idea to include some beatboxing on his own upcoming record. So he got his friend Richie Rich, who was a pretty good beatboxer himself, to come breathily box his beats for “Cosmic Blast”. And with Richie Rich, and an unforgettable electro-chiming melody supplied by the Aleem twins, and Greene’s fun party-rocking rap demeanor as Captain Rock, that quartet spun some real, dynamic, mid-80s New York gold.
It was actually a quintet though, because also in on the fun of that record was none other than Marley Marl, who’d go on to become one of hip hop’s greatest, most prolific, and most important producers. While mixing “Cosmic Blast,” Marley discovered, totally by accident, how to sample drums. He was trying to take a riff from a song, and in the process of playing back “Cosmic Blast,” discovered that he had lifted a snare drum, too. But the snare he had sampled sounded better than the drums that were originally programmed, so he kept the sample as is. This discovery led to an epiphany for Marley, in which he realized that he could sample any drum from any point within any record that was in his massive collection and then use those sampled drums as part of his own drumbeats instead of having to program the drumbeats on his own with a drum machine. This was a huge freaking deal; Marley’s beats could now sound uniquely authentic, like the drums had come from an actual drumkit, instead of sounding like they had come from the same inferior-sounding drum machines that every other producer was using. Pandora’s Box had suddenly been opened for Marley Marl with “Cosmic Blast,” and it helped set him on a course to attain legendary status as a producer.
But there’s even more to this story. Not only was electro big in New York; it was pretty popular in the UK, too; so much so, that Captain Rock actually went out there to perform at Wembley Stadium for a hip hop and electro festival called UK Fresh ‘86. He had absolutely no idea that people in the UK even knew anything about his music, but a compilation label called Street Sounds, which specialized in electro and hip hop, had been lacing their mixes with Captain Rock songs since ‘83, and in 1985, a pair of UK DJs by the names of Maurice and Noel included “Cosmic Blast” on the sixth installment of Street Sounds’ wonderful Street Sounds Electro series.
It’s there you’ll find this fantastic version of “Cosmic Blast,” which features the addition of some really dope scratches from DJs Maurice and Noel that you won’t hear on the original cut; and those scratches have a way of really fucking enhancing the song. Maurice and Noel speed things up a little bit, too, which raises the pitch ever so slightly, and makes the tune way more danceable, overall. They also completely transform the third verse by mixing in other dubby vocals from Captain Rock and then instead of running with the electric guitar solo from the original, Maurice and Noel close their version out with more scratching with a little Run-D.M.C. mixed in there.
Very cool stuff all around. An already incredible jam made even better by two British DJs. Ring in the new year with this shit. Long live electro!

Word Count: 2.2 k
A/N:  OMG!!! Thank you everyone who liked my previous fic! I fucking cried. You guys are amazing!
This one is a little weird. Hope you guys like it!!!
——————————————————————-
The clicking of your heels sounded rhythmic against the pavement. Every move you make, every breath you took, every look sent to the passing gothamites was carefully calculated. Hiding in plain sight was your specialty. The suitcase you carried was heavy, but you didn’t let that manifest, lightly swaying your hips so you could maintain a balanced walk through the path you had chosen. You got to your destination quickly, entering the high office building, the wall full of glass causing a light reflection in your eyes as you passed through security, nodding and giving the guard a small smile.
You got in the elevator, pressing the button for the last floor. As the sudden motion began, you watched as the walls of the elevator turned from black to a skittish grey, the clarity of the outside world infesting the little glass cage. Gotham was a big city, a big monochromatic grey city.  The downtown area was packed, the buildings extending through miles, the streets looking like pathways for ants, as people shuffled in the sidewalk, mindlessly following their routes, the anxiety coursing through their veins. Although you held an apathetic gaze you knew the feeling. The desperation, the panic, the depression of the city that surrounded you. You broke it as your heard the  gears slow down, turning to the doors and walking straight out when they opened it.
The stairs were one of the worst things of your little career, slightly loosing to the main action of your contract. You never thought that you would follow the line of work you had. You see, you had always been a good girl, a smart girl. You took your SATs, you passed through university like it was the easiest thing to do and did your Bar Exam, and still, after all of that, you didn’t got the job you wanted as a minor lawyer at Wayne Enterprises. You got the job it was offered, not only doing what you got a diploma for, but also for doing something else.
As you opened the doors the winds pushed you backwards. You took long strides to the ledge of the roof, seeing the covered sun setting, the myriad of unusual colors mixing with the polluted grey of Gotham’s skies. You took a breath, turning to one of the building that surrounded you. Now, you were in the tallest building in the area so you knew no one could see you. You knelt onto the ground, laying your suitcase and opening it, staring at its disassembled contents, a sigh of uneasiness leaving your lips as you picked up the part of the lower receiver, clicking the trigger mechanism, twisting in the bipod and locking it in place. Allowing the bolt carrier to come forward, you positioned the upper receiver, grasping lightly and releasing the charging handle slowly, fully closing the bolt, and finally attaching the scope and the suppressor. You laid onto the floor, position ready, breath held. You take a shot and you can hear the screams even from the distance. You raise yourself, clicking, twisting and snapping the rifle, disassembling back into its harmless form, closing the suitcase and leaving the building.
Hel, that’s what you were called. The heir of Loki. The nordic Goddess of Death and ruler of the land of the dead. Your boss was the great crime lord Black Mask, and you were not only his lawyer, which sounds ridiculous since he only deals with criminals, but also his number one markswoman. You hated the job, but the sum of money you received was enough for you to become calloused with the deaths.
As you enter your apartment complex you feel a tranquil sensation overtake you. You lived in a small but comfortable studio apartment, as you didn’t liked the opulent style your boss and colleagues flaunted. It also helped you feel more human, knowing your neighbors, hearing their talks about how the prices of tomatoes were raising. “You seem tired sweetie” you hear the softly spoken voice of your elderly neighbor Nanci say as you get to your door. Tiredly looking at her you just give her the most sincere smile of your day and she responds with a sympathetic one as you opened your door, getting promptly inside.
Taking your shoes of you walk through your living room and past your bed, entering the bathroom only to peel your clothes like they were hazardous and enter your little bathtub. In days like these you felt relieved your boss gave you the rest of the night off as a reward for a job well done, and always sunk in your tub, darkness engulfing you, warm water washing your sins. You guess you laid there for an hour, the flames of the candles you lit slowly extinguishing, until you decided to leave the warm comfort. As you raised you felt the brisk air, coming in contact with the water that trickled down your body, you shivered, quickly going for a fluffy black towel and drying yourself so you could put on the old silk robe your grandmother had given as her parting gift.
When you left the bathroom the apartment was dark, the penumbra settling in. Not that it was uncommon for you to leave the lights off, enjoying only the lights that came from the city. You moved to your dresser, putting your light flannel pijamas on and laid in the bed, a drained sigh escaping your lips as you closed your eyes, waiting for another dreamless night to take you in.
You guessed it was 3 a.m when you heard a thump, eyes opening immediately as you shudder from the chilly autumn air. Even though Gotham was a cold city, your apartment was never cold as it was now, so you knew something was wrong. You felt as someone, or something, was observing you. You breath hitched in your throat when you saw the tall figure through the wooden carved divider and you slowly made your way to the wall of your wardrobe, gently removing the ebony wood, getting the pistol you left hidden for the day someone would try to get their revenge on you.
You walked calmly towards the living room where you saw the shadow, positioning yourself so if you needed to take the shot it was going to be certain.
“The only thing I don’t understand is how someone as smart as you is working for someone as dumb as Black Mask” the shadow tonelessly said, a red helmet shining as the city lights entered you apartment. He turned to you, the blue electronic gaze clearly analyzing your stance, gloved fingers brushing the gun in his holster.
“And I don’t understand why the most psychotic vigilante broke into my apartment”, your caustic tone dripped from your tongue. Breaking your stance you lowered the gun, returning the hammer and putting the safety on as you sit on the sofa, putting the pistol in the coffee table between you and the vigilante. “That wasn’t my first option of a job, you know,” you point it out, the tiredness in your voice making the stance that he held soften.
You stood there, a comfortable silence setting as he took his gun from the holster and, imitating you, left it on the small table and leaned his back on the wall, still staring at you. You closed your eyes momentarily, taking a deep breath as you raised your body from your couch and moving to the kitchen “You can sit down, if you want Red Hood. I guess we have a lot to talk and if I don’t have a coffee you better just die before I get to the gun again” you confessed, hearing a light mechanic chuckle coming from the living room. You start to boil water in your stove as you hear hard footsteps, “And please take the shoes off, leave them by the door” you demanded and soon later heard the a slight “ompf” as the heavy boots dropped to the ground, with that you smiled and thought that at least you would die in the hands of a considerate vigilante.
When he got to your the kitchen island he sat down in one of the stools while you were putting the grounded coffee beans in a paper filter, covering with water as the dark liquid filled a thermic bottle, and not even the helmet could stop the smell of fresh coffee of reaching his nose. You poured it in two cups, sliding one back to him as you pulled your body up until you sat in the cold marble counter, holding the cup with your two hands and slightly blowing the steam coming from the scalding liquid. You hear the small gears of Red Hoods helmet twist and a light pop as he detached the crimson helmet and put by his side.
“Does the other mask serve as a dramatic effect?” you jokingly ask as you study his face. The chiseled jaw and the soft skin begging to be touched by your hands and the chapped lips begging to be kissed by yours. You shake your head, taking the indecent thoughts ou of your mind as he passes his hands through his raven hair and you thought you could see a clear white streak hiding between the dark locks.
“Yes” he answered giving you a sheepish grin and taking the cup of coffee into his hands, smelling e taking a small sip, a distorted quiet moan leaving his lips as he closed his eyes, muscles seemingly relaxing “You know, my partner would love this. He never sleeps so he needs caffeine all the time” he tells you.
“The secret is in the way you prepared it, fresh, saying no the the machines” you instructed, taking a gulp of the hot beverage, the sensation of the burning awakening you. Again you two sat in silence, the only sound being the almost silent swallowing. “I can’t leave” you mumbled, attracting his gaze from the cup back to you, eyeing you with curiosity. “I can’t leave, I signed a contract, I sold my soul to him. I know what I did is wrong, but it was the only way I could survive Gotham,” you said louder, your grip in the mug tightening, “I do the job and in return he keeps me safe and pays me a good amount. And if one day I decide to leave…” you stop, the panic arising on your mind, reflecting as you bite you lower lip and you see his jaw tighten.
He raised himself from the stool, his hands tightened into fists as he got closer to you, slightly looking down so the could see you in the eye since you jumped of the counter. “I can’t help you” he began “I was sent here to do a job. You see, I do get some gruesome jobs sometimes, after all, I do have to pay the rent so I don’t blame you there” he revealed, a dark tone lingered in his voice. You closed your eyes, hunching your shoulders and twisting your lips in a half, sad, smile. You heard him turn, walking back to the living room and picking the heavy pistol, pressing the hammer down. “What I can you, is kill you” that was the last thing you heard as the ringing in your ears started. The loud bang startling you as you felt the raging pain in your leg, warm crimson liquid leaving your as you fell on your knees.
You held the scream of pain, looking as Red Hood, face hidden once again by the helmet, walked back to you and kneeling onde he got in front of you. “Pack a bag,  go away. I’ll take care of the rest and after I’m finished they won’t have a doubt that you’re dead” he calmly whispered, touching your wounded and spreading some of the blood in your sofa. He turned to you, helping you to your feet and you limped back to your wardrobe, getting the the bag you prepared when you first entered the job. You opened it to see all your money money, fake documents and some clothes laid neatly in it. You entered the bathroom, scattering on your cabinet for your first aid kit and promptly arranged a tourniquet, also popping some painkillers in your mouth. You keep hearing crashing coming from the kitchen, glass being shattered and now suppressed gun shots in you wall.
It was a misunderstanding to say that it was repairable. Your apartment was in shreds as Red Hood got closer to you, opening the fire escape so you could pass through it and both of you got down to the alleyway that stood in the middle of your and the neighboring building. The next thing you know you were hugging his back tightly as the motorcycle roared and speeded thought Gotham’s streets. The lights passing so fast you thought you were going to vomit. As the bike came to stop you noticed the neon lights mark the way to the bus stop.
“Get as far away as possible, and never come back. Gotham always remembers.” he says as a restrained mumble, never sparing you the look.
“Thank you” you said, lips quickly coming in contact with the cold steel of his helmet.
He watches you until you disappeared, never once turning to look back.

Misty Night Cruising =[<0>]= (A side story)
Inspiration || Misty Night Cruising - Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe
============[<0>]============
Writer’s note: This was a short story I’ve been holding onto for some time, thought i’d finally post it. I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Tumblr media
Rain fell in droves as the evening's hurricane began to slowly roll overhead. Lightning cascaded across the darkening violet while clouds swirled into an inky darkness. The city's neon glow and street lights were all that filled the soaking blacktop. Echoes of thunder boomed between concrete buildings, rattling their glassy windows from top to bottom.
The hurried splish and splash of footsteps along the drenched sidewalks came to bear as murmurs and huffs of late pedestrians caught in the evening rain began to fill the air. Cries of electronic adverts and rumbles of passing cars joined the cacophony only for them all to hush in a stark silence as one more snarl of an engine rose above all else.
In hushes and stunned silence were now whispers of one word and one word only. "...Rider." Suddenly, out from a dark alley flashed a headlight as it burst onto the once loud street. Streaks of ghastly white trailed from its taillight as the driver navigates through the busy traffic. The wall of pouring rain cascades along metal armor plates and a gilded visor as the motorcycle glides seamlessly through the rushing traffic, forward, onward to the outskirts of the city until squealing tires grind the rush to an ear-splitting halt.
Tumblr media
Billowing tire smoke dances through the pouring rain as the rider finds herself at a roundabout. The four exit traffic circle empty save for flickering street lamps, a singular centerpiece tree and one other being. Blue and yellow lights faintly wash over the rotunda, their glow interrupted by the gleam of a vicious red visor rider on the opposing exit.
A quivering breath overtakes the new arrival, a dangerous hitch in her throat as a trembling hand refreshes its grip on the handlebar while fingers stretch for the clutch. Their other hand lowers to the belt where a holster and firearm sits. As soon as her armor touches the grip of the weapon the scream and wail of tires from the far end of the circle tear through the pouring rain.
In turn, her hand rolls back the grip, forcing her own engine to rev up through the late night sky. Once the machine begs to budge, she releases the break, sending her forward. Clover tightens her jaw as she leans into her bike as she rolls onto the roundabout, forcing her ride to accelerate to mimic the other rider.
Twin engines whine into the thunder ridden cityscape as hushed bystanders rush to cover, fearfully watching the two drivers accelerate beyond safe speeds, their sights glued onto one another. The bikes bellowed out near guttural roars from their exhaust pipes as they began to match speeds beneath a clap of thunder.  Locked in sync, hands pull free their weapons, a barreled sword and a handgun. Sights aimed at one another, fingers find themselves on their triggers, pulling the curved switches without warning.
Tumblr media
Through the torrent of rain, droplets became split and splatter in the air as shots ring out against glass windows high above the city streets. Screams of bystanders echo only to fall silent beneath clamoring thunder and flashes of lightning. The bikes dared to accelerate yet even more as fingers pull back on the triggers again and again and again. Bullets ping off the bike plating and metal armor, some finding home into the leather seat or softer suits, others missing entirely, embedding themselves in guardrails, tree bark and concrete.
Deafening gunfire breaches the pitter-patter of puddles along the blacktop before the bikes steer their riders closer, tighter into the circle. Metal rims beg for respite as they grind against the concrete sidewalk of the centerpiece, sparks lashing out over droplets of muggy water.
With another squealing screech, the bikes glide to a halt along the street. Their headlights pointed directly across the green in a sea of black and gray. Boots kick down their main stands before pushing off the frames of their bikes, rushing forward into the center, weapons forward.
Vocal roars rip through panting breaths as swords are drawn, their blades clashing, spawning sparks of bitter strength to dance along their grinding edges. Sweat drips down the girl's brow as her right hand flies for a punch against the other Rider's rose-crested chest. Thunks clap outward as blows connect, furious and heavy. Their blades clip, pushing back their wielders by only a foot as they spin on their heels and toes to come down once again.
Tumblr media
Their shadows dance between the pouring rain in a bloodied ballet as lightning blends their strikes together with each and every flash. Through the cameras on several hiding phones showed that despite their grizzly beginning, the fight was waning as the rain began to pour harder. The maelstrom overhead showed now signs of letting up, waves of wind driven rain wash through the streets.
Silhouettes of the fight were all that could be seen save for the screech of sparks as they fly from the opposing bodies. Few souls dreadfully aware of the spectacle could only call this the dance of death as both Riders show no signs of forgiveness in their strikes. Winds from furious fists and bellowing kicks push back waves of rain around them as their blows are traded pound for pound, dent for dent, blood for blood.
As the seconds drone on, the near breathless moments from bystanders seem to take on eons of time, while pounding hearts could do nothing but take in the subtle scent of wafting copper and soot among the lingering scent of burning rubber. The engagement showed no end in sight as swords brace against one another, their blades pointed forward. Edges touching, brushing against the soft of their suits. The whine and scrape of metal comes as steps find themselves forward, bodies pushing against one another.
Their gridlock seemed to be perfect, imperfect stalemate until the feel of a cooling barrel finds itself against the abdomen of the Rider. It happened in a flash, and with widened eyes the trigger is pulled with a staunch ear-ringing bang. A stunned hush of silence falls over everything, even the rain.
With struggling gasps of air breaching their otherwise silent engagement, the red gleaming visor staggers as a hand reaches for a wound across their torso. Weakness showing now only seemed to push Clover forward, her blade brandished strongly in her right hand as she slashes for his midsection. The connecting swing erupts in a flash of pained sparks before gushes of red wash out onto the white light and green grass.
Tumblr media
In a vicious spin, the gilded helmet turns upward as she levels the once quivering barrel at the red gleam, mercilessly pulling the trigger once more. Another flash breaches the rainy night as her hand recoils and the Rider reels back, sparks dancing erratically off of their helmet as they fall flat onto his back with an unceremonious splash.
Through the two shimmering headlights and faint glow of the streetlamps, one could see some of the damage dealt. Sparks shot out of the once-red visor's eye slot as in the flashes of lightning revealed the fateful truth. The faceplate was destroyed, showing the human beneath the mask.
He was young. Too young. His features blooded and bruised as tears along his eyes mixed with the pouring rain along showing skin. The boy's pale skin was stained, freckles buried beneath scuffs and fresh blood. His eyes pleaded for the pain to stop as he tried to speak, but only gurgles of bubbled blood escaped his lips. Even as he was young, he was familiar... too familiar.
It made her sick. Like a twist of a knife straight to her gut as her heart began to wrench all too tightly. Her footing began to loosen as she slammed herself down onto a knee, instinct of the fight driving her forward while every part inside of her screamed to stop. Spare him, spare the kid, spare her friend, spare Juro yet like a siren's song on the winds, she continued on.
Quivering lips fought back a choked breath as she watched herself put the still smoking barrel to his chest. Her sight began to haze yet as it did, tired hands rose to grip the arm holding the gun, pulling it, pressing the barrel tighter to his chest, beckoning for the end.
Then, like a haunting echo, his voice came through the rain, through the thundering clamor and trembling quiet. "T-tell... tell my friends... I... that I'm in a better place... Finish it."
Through clenched teeth, Clover silently grieves as she feels her finger press lightly against the curve of the trigger...
-BLAM-
The grip around her blade tightens unforgivably before she lowers her head. Slowly Clover comes to rise up against the downpour. Her heart weeping as her visor turns skyward, watching the flashing lightning to distract herself from the fading forms of metal armor at her feet. Where once lay a bloodied Rider, now remained soaked dust and fading memories as his body began to fade.
Without another word she finds herself on her bike, staring at the empty spot across from her at the rotunda. Boots kick up the main stand as the engine revs up, roaring loudly as if it were a lion asserting its dominance in the kingdom before the bike peels off down one of the exits. Ghostly white taillights fading down the long roads into the rainy night..

The journey to Trial took several days, more than a week. During this time, Diana was stuck in a number of vehicles, transports, farm machines and carriages where she often also had to sleep. She wasn’t to talk to the drivers, nor to be seen. She found that a bit silly but she guessed she was only useful as an informal supporter of the Scarlet Guard if she wasn’t known as one, not to be connected to any rebel who might get caught.
Her company was a woman about thirty, with short straight black hair and olive skin. Sometimes she drove their transport; the rest of the time she wanted Diana to prepare. Or rather “Tina”. To make her memorize her role, the operative never used Diana’s true name and neither introduced herself. Diana went along with that, eager to please, yet inwardly wondering how deep the operative had sunk into the game of changing identities. She instructed Diana in the duties of a Red civil servant, so strict and exact about the required meekness she could’ve been a maid servant herself. Or still was, like putting on a mask over her rebel self. As she also told Diana how to be a spy.
“You have only women as roommates on your floor,” the operative said when they eventually arrived at the dorm in Trial. The dorm was higher than any house Diana had ever been in before, and still it was surrounded by buildings even higher, reaching into the grey sky.
Diana swallowed her nausea that rose from sudden uncertainty. Don’t be such a bumpkin. To not let her rural origins show was precisely what the operative had reminded her about.
“Right”, Diana agreed to whatever she’d said.
The operative sighed as they entered the building and went up the stairs. “All inhabitants of this dorm are some sort of servant or other. Mostly with municipal jobs, like you.”
“Sure.”
The operative stopped her at the door of the third-floor-room “Tina” was to live in. She turned to Diana, glaring. “Don’t trust them.”
Diana raised an eyebrow. “As people? Or as sources?”
For the first time in days, the operative’s features softened, although one would hardly call it a smile. “I see you understand. As the former, of course. You aren’t here to make friends. Now come,” said she, and led Diana inside the room.
They dressed in uniforms of skirts and shirts, all in light blue shades apart from the scarlet neckties marking them as Reds, to undermine any chance at being mistaken.
Diana wasn’t sure what to think of the face she saw in the mirror. With her straight, pinned-up hair and the crisp uniform, it wasn’t the face she was used to, neither a strange woman of nineteen. She was not Diana Farley of Sieverling, but someone different, someone she’d have to get to know – and shape. Into the spy the Scarlet Guard wanted.
The operative nodded. “Let’s go introduce you at the office.”
Diana took a reassuring breath, glancing one last time at herself in the mirror. You can do this.
But it was winter, and she was glad the operative let her keep her coat from home, to cuddle in something familiar during their walk.
The work itself was dull. Sorting papers, carrying forms, copying them. She wasn’t good or fast on the typewriter, unskilled compared to her co-workers, and she feared this lack of experience had to out her false identity. She tried to improve and to shift typing to other colleagues, but she realized that she failed the Guard in this regard: If she had been a quick typist, she could type documents for the Guard besides her official tasks. But they knew this when they hired you for this job.
On the other hand, when she was free of the typewriter, she had enough time to gather the bits and pieces the Guard wanted. The municipal office stored many police data Diana was to search up in the archives, at other times she could trip over some rumours regarding the forces’ next steps, both information valuable for protecting Scarlet Guard operatives. Not that she had any idea about their dangerous operations as information only ever flowed one way – away from her. Like before, Diana was to organize forms and permits the Guard needed, sometimes by stealing, other times by leaving a door open at the right time. Most intelligence she was to deliver to a drop box that changed location every week. Occasionally, a handler expected her for a briefing, and quickly, she learned to censor her words to avoid suspicion. Keeping her routes hidden was top priority, of course.
Diana had feared her absences, her inefficiency, would be noticed and chided, but soon she had realized her co-workers also stretched their tasks to fill their days, without trying to impress the Silvers for the small hope of promotion. Was there a point in trying? She guessed the real “Tina” would want to impress, to keep this position, about also that her co-workers would know better than her. The Silvers underestimated all Reds, and showed that to Reds every day.
That was why Diana had learned to freeze, automatically, lowering her eyes and putting on the vapid friendly smile, when a Silver entered the office. She saw more of them there than ever before in her life and the shock remained fresh for her. She was never able to anticipate their orders, either filled with stupid and offensive remarks, or random tasks the Reds had to figure out on their own, with little hints how much extra time they demanded. Those occasions were only sufferable because the colleagues stuck together, to distract or subtly calm an agitated Silver and to share the work.
The worst was that Diana was either invisible or a tool to be used or a doll to be stared at.
She hadn’t been aware how much it hurt, to be gawped at and not seen as a person but an object. There was one Silver, a middle-aged man with long brown hair and cold beige skin, who always looked at her in passing, harder than the others. He never said anything and every time, Diana felt her 15-year-old self like never before.
From her first day, she’d kept her knife on her person, firstly because she was used to it, later because it gave her reassurance.
No one there knew she was a young girl. No one knew her name. And she could never let anything slip. Not even in the dorm, where most of her roommates were in their mid- or late twenties, could she let go. She feared they’d smell her secrets as she claimed to be close in age yet always remained a little bit off. They even talked different from her.
She tried though. Gone out with them in their spare time, to roam the city. She couldn’t get used to it, the grey concrete everywhere, the air, the fragrances. There was a river, yes, and many canals and wells, but hardly green. And the convenience. She didn’t have enough coin to buy more than what she needed to live, but she saw enough – more than enough. Medicines, clothes, books, tools, even electronic devices were available in Trial, things she found at home only a few times a year when the right vendors bothered to visit Sieverling to sell their decidedly smaller offers.
Just the chance to buy these things at any time, to have them at hand when needed, made her envious, even though they were still unaffordable for most Reds.
“They’re traps, you know,” her handler, a young man in his mid-twenties with golden-brown complexion, said once. “The shops.”
“Hm?”
“They’re to tell us what we’re supposed to crave in the Silvers’ eyes, to ignore what we really need.”
Diana understood him, truly. But those were a city man’s words, not of a person who would’ve given – or paid – anything for an expensive medicine to save a life when purchasing that drug from another place took more time than a beloved, dying, person had left.
Diana remembered when her mother had a fever after Madeline’s birth. Papa had been devastated, but he’d gotten that antibiotic to help her, as the drug vendor had travelled on just to the next village. His own mother, he said then, hadn’t been so lucky when she suffered and died from pneumonia.
One rainy evening in late March, Diana wasn’t with her roommates when they went out. She continued to keep herself apart from them, being a stranger as the city remained a stranger to her.
One reason for that was the curfew. She just couldn’t grasp it. Lord Isère took few measures to control the private lives of the people of Sieverling, but a curfew would’ve been beyond ridiculous. Telling peasants – or hunters, like her parents – not to leave their houses at night, when the best time for work could happen to be in the dark? When an animal – or a sick person, for that matter – might be in need?
Diana knew what the curfew was for, to control the Reds. To remind them the place they lived in wasn’t their own.
She stared out of the window, into the rain and onto the wet street. Her roommates had ways to deal with the curfew, knew the right bars and places to sleep in. It should’ve been enough; Diana was alone, could forget her façade for a night and imagine she was in another place, with someone else. She missed her family, GIselle, her life so much. But she was angry tonight, full of energy and considering how lazy she’d become with her office work and lack of training sessions. She cursed at hiding herself. It was fifteen minutes until curfew, and she decided to go out for a jog.
She despised the first metres but she bit through them, pulling up her hood against the rain. She wore dark clothes, pants and a sweater, clothes she also put on when training at home. She ran on until she no longer felt the cold gushes of the weather and instead had the warmth of the runner’s high rise in her. Finally, she smiled. And squinting her eyes, she saw the two watchmen almost too late.
Cussing silently, she dashed into the next alleyway to avoid a pointless questioning. She had little idea where it led, seeing only puddles and shadows in the tight gap between houses, until two people emerged from the darkness, pressed against the wall.
No, one person pressed against the wall by the other. Diana stopped, yet a puddle splashed as she stepped into it.
“Another customer?” one of them hissed. It was the aggressor, the person holding the other, a boy, in place. A woman, it sounded like, and she turned her head to Diana, letting go of the boy.
The boy stayed fixed on the wall and Diana ceased to breathe.
The woman had to be another guard, a Silver. And, she realized as the rain formed into icicles, a shiver who was able to freeze liquid matter.
Dina only saw a pale face framed by hair turned dark from the rain as the Silver advanced at her. She prayed for her training to kick in, to tell her what to do. She fell into a defensive stance as the Silver slid on the puddles in the alley she’d turned into ice, along with the icicles in her hand she began to throw. Only then did Diana remember her lessons.
You can’t defend against a Silver. You can only attack.
The Silver was inched away from her when Diana changed position and kicked at the Silver’s leg, shattering her balance. Passing her opponent, Diana slid onto the ice puddle herself, grabbing her knife as she spun at the edge of the ice.
The Silver seemed stunned, for she hesitated. Diana’s mind ran miles but she had no time to search her memories for a shiver’s fatal weakness. She just knew how much their surroundings favoured the Silver, with all the water to freeze and turn into weapons. There were already new icicles, growing sharply around the Silver.
Diana moved forward, afraid the shiver would use the puddle to pin her place, like she’d done with the boy behind her. She ran, her left hand lifted to protect her face against the icy projectiles that pierced her belly instead.
She couldn’t stop. She charged, crashing into the Silver and lashing away her arm with the claws of ice taking shape around it. They both fell, and Diana buried her knife in the Silver’s chest.
She breathed heavily, on top of the Silver woman. She pressed a hand over the Silver’s mouth and nose to stop her from screaming.
It felt endlessly. The woman was dying and still, her ability, her last breaths, tried to freeze Diana’s skin. But it was no use, and finally, it was over.
Diana thought she must’ve dealt a lucky hit, punctured a lung. If she’d pierced the stomach, it would’ve been her who lost her life.
Suddenly, she heard a crack and the boy stood right behind her, shoving her away. Diana crouched on her haunches, staring at the hesitating boy. Then he ripped a bag open and threw powder over the body. “Go!” he spat at Diana, and turned to dash down the dark alleyway, on some path only he knew.
Diana didn’t follow. She got up, stepped out of the alley, and ran home.

One Handsome Devil (TRR)
Masterlist
Chapter 50 : Part 2
_Recovery_
Tumblr media
Kate opens her eyes to a world of grey, feeling groggy and disoriented. The oxygen mask hissed as she breathed, the rubber bands that hooked it behind her ears pinched her skin. As her eyes focused she realized she was in a hospital room. The soft beep of her heart monitor filtered in as her other senses came awake. Lifting her right hand she sees the IV tube in the back of her hand and the electronic sensor clamped to her finger. When she tried to move her other arm it wouldn't budge. Oh my God, what's happening? Why does my shoulder ache so much?
The monitor attached to her finger starts to beep rapidly, registering her growing panic and the thumping of her heart. Her warm breath clouds the mask as she gulps at the cool air filling her lungs, her tears sting her eyes and her cheeks.
She hears the hurried footsteps of someone approaching and then the curtain surrounding her bed is ripped aside. The kind sympathetic face of a young female intern swims into view.
"Easy there Miss Darling, everything is going to be ok." She says, soothingly.
Adjusting the bed and pillows so Kate can sit up, she gently pulls the mask off her face and then dabs at her face with the corner of the bedsheet.
Kate gives her a weak smile of gratitude as she looks up at her nametag.  "Th-..thankyou...Dr. Maloney." she whispers.
Kate's head was full of questions, Where am I? Where is Drake?  Is he Ok?  What happened to me in the accident?
"Where am I?" She asks as she looks at the sling on her left shoulder and the cast on her arm.
Dr. Maloney smiles, "You're at Portavira General Hospital."
Kate frowns, looking around for anyone familiar, suddenly feeling very alone. "Portavira?" where the hell is that?  "I'm not in the Capital?"
The intern shakes her head, picking up her chart. "You were brought here by helicopter."
Kate has a vague memory of being strapped to a stretcher and being lifted. Then the airsick woozy feeling of being moved around randomly like a bad amusement ride.
Sliding her hand over her belly, it feels bloated and there are bandages that scrape against her hospital gown.
"What..what were my injuries?" Kate asks nervously, scared of the answer.
The doctor reads her chart out loud, bypassing the medical jargon and putting things in words Kate would understand, "Uh let's see, a dislocated shoulder, a fracture to the forearm, and a minor tearing of the uterine wall from blunt trauma. You were bleeding out pretty badly, but with a minor surgery they were able to stitch you up and stop the bleeding."
Kate gasps, "A tearing of my what?"
Terrifying thoughts of future infertility and miscarriage race through her mind, causing a deep feeling of dread. She and Drake had just talked about how much they wanted children.
Dr. Maloney looked up from the chart, noticing that Kate has gotten a little paler, and her eyes were wide with worry. "Don't worry, the womb is very resilient. It takes a beating from the inside for several months while it holds onto a fetus. You'll heal just fine and be able to try for another baby in a few weeks."
Kate grips the sheet over her belly, scoffing with denial, "Another baby? I wasn't pregnant."
Sure I was late, but that was nothing new. But then again the last time I was late I didn't have a boyfriend. Oh my God no..
"According to your bloodwork and a urine sample there was a slight elevation in your hormone levels, and the presence of HCG. But there was only a trace amount so we can't be totally sure at this point. I'm sorry to alarm you. The nature of your bleeding prompted us to assume a miscarriage, and we tested for signs of pregnancy in your bloodwork. Were you and your husband trying to conceive?"
Kate shakes her head trying to swallow, her throat was dry from the oxygen she had been administered. "Can..can I get a drink of water please?" She whispers.
The doctor lays the clipboard on the foot of the bed, "Oh sure, sorry about that. I know this is a lot to take in all at once."
Dr. Maloney pours her a cup of water from a nearby pitcher. Kate accepts it, her hand shaking slightly as she sips. "Thanks."
Picking up her chart again, Dr Maloney looks over her information. "You're a mystery  'Kate Darling, 25'  We have a lot of gaps to fill in. When you arrived we only had your name and age."
Kate takes another sip of water. "I was wondering how you knew my name. I don't remember telling anyone."
"I'm not sure who identified you, that's just what they were calling you when you were wheeled in."
Pulling over a chair, Dr. Maloney clicks her pen and then sits down with her chart. "Ok let's fill in the blanks. Your birthdate?"
"December 17th, 1992." Kate says, guessing that the fresh faced intern was around the same age based on the slight turning up of the corners of her mouth.
"Your address?"
Kate gnaws on her lip, "That's a good question, because I really don't know. I live at the Royal Palace with King Nicholas."
Dr. Maloney chuckles, "Yeah right. Seriously where do you live?"
"I'm not kidding. I live at the Royal Palace with the King and I'm engaged to his best friend." Kate insists, knowing that her story sounded crazy to the average person.
"Okaaay, we'll leave that space blank for now." The doctor says, raising her eyebrows and shaking her head. Seriously how hard did this girl hit her head?
"Who do I list as your next of kin?"
"Umm, well my parents live in the U.S. and Brazil so there's no point in listing them. I should probably say King Nicholas, where he's technically responsible for me being in the country, but there's no way I'm allowed to give out his personal phone number. If I told you any other name than my fiance he'd probably be mad, so list Drake Walker as my next of kin."
The Doctor scribbles his name on the form. "And his phone number?"
"He doesn't have a home phone, just a cell, is that Ok?"
The Doctor nods, waiting.
Kate rhymes off Drake's phone number. Damn I wish I could talk to him, tell him I'm Ok. Looking around the unfamiliar recovery room again, Kate feels incredibly lonely. She could really use a familiar face or voice right now.
"Before we can admit you we need to contact Mr. Walker to let him know where you are. As your next of kin he should know your condition as well."
Kate gives the doctor a grateful smile, "Is there any way I can talk to him? I don't have my phone with me."
Dr. Maloney nods, "Your condition is pretty stable. I'll go get you a wheel chair, and then I'll take you out to the nurse's station to call..." she looks down at the paper again to find his name.
"Drake." Kate replies, smiling.
"Yes, thanks." Dr. Maloney gets up from the chair. "Be right back."
Kate settles back against her pillows, looking down at her arm in its cast and sling, she smooths the blanket over her bandaged sore belly. Did we really have a baby in there? It's only been a few days, probably not. I was just late that's all. I hope the surgery doesn't leave a big scar.
She sees the Doctor coming back with the wheel chair. "Ok Miss Daisy, your chariot awaits."
Dr. Maloney drops the side of her hospital bed, disconnecting her pulse monitor from her finger and switching off the machine when the alarm goes off. Placing an arm around her back, and scooping her arm under her knees she carefully helps Kate turn to sit up on the side of the bed. "You're stronger than you look, Dr. Maloney." Kate laughs.
"I've had plenty of practice. Compared to moving a full grown man, you're light as a feather." She says, blushing at the compliment.
Kate eyes the smooth vinyl seat of the wheelchair and then looks down at her bare legs. "I'm guessing my fancy chariot doesn't have heated leather seat cushions."
Pulling the thermal blanket off the bed, Dr. Maloney folds it in half on the diagonal and lays it across the seat and back of the wheelchair. "That should help. Once you're aboard we can wrap the extra blanket around you like a shawl to keep you covered and preserve a little dignity."
"Awww, thanks Doc, that'll be perfect." Kate says with a grateful sigh of relief.
Once Kate is bundled up in her wheelchair, she wheels her IV pole along while Dr. Maloney pushes the chair. "What's your first name Doctor? If you don't mind me asking? You've been so nice to me I'd feel better if I could refer to you by your first name."
"Denise." She says, navigating Kate out to the nurses station.
Kate cuddles her blanket around herself as Denise talks to the nurse behind the counter. After they update her file in the computer the nurse picks up the receiver on the phone.
