The demand for such motors and controllers in India is increasing owing to the proliferation of electric rickshaws in the nation, due to the escalating need for low-cost vehicles for first/last-mile connectivity, government support in the form of incentives, and their low operating cost. For instance, there were over 7 lakh electric rickshaws on Indian roads in 2018, which increased by about 6 lakh units from the number recorded in 2014. The sudden rise in the number occurred mainly due to the incentives and environmental policies implemented by the government.
Motors rated at 1,001–1,500 Watts of power outsell all other variants due to the existence of several local and unorganized companies providing 1,001–1,500-W electric motors in large numbers. Whereas, 1,501–2,000-W and >2,000-W motors are projected to observe a massive rise in their sales in the coming years. This would be because currently, most of the e-rickshaws are used to ferry passengers, but those used for transporting cargo are witnessing a rapid increase in sales around the country.
Battery rickshaw manufacturers, owners, and drivers generate the highest demand for motors and controllers. These rickshaws are the best substitutes for cycle rickshaws, as they do not require human power for propulsion and are relatively easy to operate. Moreover, due to their low operating and purchase costs than traditional auto rickshaws, the sale for battery rickshaws is increasing.
State-wise, Delhi registers the highest revenue from the sale of these components on account of the high sales of electric rickshaws and surging air pollution level in the state. In response to this, a subsidy of $439.6 (INR 30,000) on electric rickshaws was provided by the Delhi government in 2016. Similarly, product sales are burgeoning in Uttar Pradesh owing to the rising demand for electric rickshaws in the Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities, as well as the rural areas of the state.
However, in the past, the motors and controllers available in the country had no guarantee of quality, as they were produced by independent entities working at small factories often established inside workers’ homes. But, now, since the government implemented GST, such unorganized players have found it hard to sell their products, and they are now being overrun by established and well-known OEMs, such as Mahindra, Hero, and those based in China.
Thus, the growing adoption of electric rickshaws in India will drive the demand for motors and controllers in the foreseeable future.

The manufacture of electric vehicles (EV) has taken centre stage
As India moves closer to its vision of a sustainable future, the manufacture of electric vehicles (EV) has taken centre stage. In this year’s Union Budget 2019-20, the Finance Minister to make EVs popular, announced a tax subsidy for people who buy EVs.
Projects like National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 and Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) have been launched by the government for widespread adoption of EVs.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and MSMEs, Nitin Gadkari anticipates prices of electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers and buses to fall to the level of their conventional counterparts in the near to medium-term future. Tireless efforts are on-going by the government and industry players to find solutions to improve the charging infrastructure.
This has resulted in more players foraying into EV manufacturing and allied sectors. In India, it is not difficult to spot a variety of electric vehicles ranging from electric cars, e-bikes and e-buses to e-rickshaws and e-trucks.
India’s first all-electric truck was fully designed, developed and built in India by Infraprime Logistics Technologies (IPLT), a construction logistics start-up. Launched in India in August 2019, the EV garnered significant attention as it led the charge for the industry-first air-conditioned battery pack having a warranty of 600,000km.
With a gradient of 23 per cent, the truck outperforms comparable diesel trucks resulting in smoother functioning in difficult terrain. The truck is powered by four important computer systems, namely the motor control, transmission, battery management, and battery charging system. It is India’s first EV to feature an automatic transmission for a two-speed operation and is essentially used for transporting, material like aggregates from mines to construction project sites, transportation for cement companies, etc.
The company claims the truck can travel 400 km (without payload) and 200 km (with load) between charges. After the success of the commercial run of its fleet of 55-MT electric trucks over the last year, IPLT is planning to roll out 1,000 heavy-duty electric trucks in India. The first commercial run showcased savings in operating costs for its owners of up to 60 per cent over conventional diesel trucks.
Following suit, TATA Motors, one of India’s biggest and most recognised truck manufacturers launched it’s Tata ULTRA T. 7 Electric Truck at the Auto Expo in Greater Noida in 2020. Boasting a modern design and a zero-emission powertrain, the truck has been designed to bear a payload range of 3692-4935 kgs.
Despite this being Tata’s first electric utility vehicle, the Indian automobile manufacturer has been in the business of electrifying cars for over five years now. Daimler, the heavy-duty truck and bus maker, is also planning to launch its first electric truck as it continues to bet on the domestic market.
The first all-electric truck from Daimler Trucks for series production is the light-duty Fuso eCanter whose second-generation version will be launched next year.
The eCanter has a driving range of 100 km between charges while being able to carry a payload of up to 3,200 kg. In India, the Daimler Trucks is manufacturing medium and heavy trucks and buses under the brands of BharatBenz and Fuso.
India’s first retrofitted electric light commercial vehicle (eLCV) was launched by Etrio, an electric vehicle start-up.
The 30,000 sq ft manufacturing facility is located in Hyderabad and has an annual production capacity of 5000 vehicles. Through retro fitment, more than over 20 lakh Tata Ace LCVs can extend their lifespan with an extension of over 5 years.
Retro fitment helps the driver in saving almost 60% of the operational expenses by transforming a diesel-powered LCV into a green vehicle. This will not only bring a great deal of sustainability to the e-commerce logistics space but will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the overall EV ecosystem.
As the policy environment becomes more favourable, innovations in the EV space will see more traction. In India, the future of autonomous and electric vehicles is progressively moving forward with the manufacture of cleaner and quicker transport.
The high dependency on oil imports and the high levels of pollution pose a huge challenge for India and a one-stop solution to these problems is the adoption of autonomous and electric vehicles.

India Electric Vehicle Components Market
India Electric Vehicle Components Market size was valued US$ XX Mn in 2019 and the total revenue is expected to grow at XX% through 2020 to 2027, reaching US$ XX Mn.
India Electric Vehicle Components Market
India Electric Vehicle Components Market Drivers & Restraints:
An Increasing adoption of electric vehicles & government initiatives towards electric vehicles like tax exemptions, purchase rebates, & financial incentives are the key reasons contributing towards the growth of electric vehicle component market in India. The decreasing price of the components that used in electric vehicles is boosting the manufactures to choose high quality components in the EV, thereby increasing the demand for the EV components market across India. In addition to this, increasing price of fuel, rapid depletion of fossil fuels & degradation of the environment owing to CO2 emission coupled with the growing environmental awareness among the buyers will further complement the demand for electric vehicles which in turn will fuel the demand for electric vehicle components in India. Though current crude oil prices fall is expected to slow down the short term growth of EV, India is expected to be a growth engine for EV vehicles by 2027.
Many multinational automotive key players are heavily investing in the R&D in order to develop progressive technologies for the electric vehicles to meet the changing demand of the buyers across India. The unceasing product improvement will attract a large number of buyers towards the adoption of electric vehicles in India. The Indian government is focusing towards the production of charging stations for the EV across India. For example, The Ministry of Power provided guidelines & standards for setting up charging infrastructure of Evs at every 3 Km. The Central government permitted the setting up of 2,636 EV charging stations around 62 cities in 24 states & Union Territories across the country. Through this action, the government inclines to encourage the manufacturers to launch new models of EVs with superior performance which will further accelerate the growth of EV components market in India.
Indian Government has increased custom duty on imports of battery-powered vehicles between 5 percent and 15 percent.
In a bid to incentivize local manufacturing of EVs, the Government of India on Feb 02, 2020, increased custom duty on imports of battery-powered vehicles between 5% and 15%. The move may lead to a cost increase for EV makers who import their vehicles as completely-built units or as knocked-down kits. Hyundai Motor India imports its Kona EV, however, an official close to the company said that its pricing had already accounted for higher duty as per the phased EV manufacturing plan of the government. However, it is still studying comprehensive impact of the budget & is yet to take a call on pricing.
Other imported electric vehicles include the MG Motor ZS EV as well as a clique of electric two- & three-wheelers as well as buses. The customs duty on completely built units of electric commercial vehicles have been increased from 25% to 40%, whereas the one with the internal combustion engine has been increased from 30% to 40%.
The tax on semi-knocked down forms of an electric passenger vehicle, three-wheeler has been increased from 15% to 30%, whereas semi-knocked down electric, buses, trucks & two-wheelers has been raised from 15% to 25%. The duty on completely knocked down forms of electric vehicles - all segments - passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, three wheelers and two-wheelers have been raised from 10% to 15%.
The government had relaxed duties on the import of EVs to spur value-addition in the local market & kick start the industry, but the relaxations will now be slashed to increase localized content as the government had indicated as part of the electric & hybrid vehicles adoption scheme. The move will likely affect electric rickshaws & buses imported from China the most, this is a step in the right direction, but the push towards local manufacturing will vary from segment to segment. The companies will be compelled to localize battery packs, motors & power control units which may call for local manufacturing. The move from imports to local manufacturing of parts may be high on lesser sophisticated three-wheelers versus buses as the volumes are large to justify the investment. The parts for commercial vehicles may be in thousands versus tens of for other segments.
