A little F•R•I•E•N•D•S survey just because.
Characters Favourite character? I relate to Monica the most but my favorite has got to be Chandler. Favourite male character? Chandler by a long shot. Favourite female character? Monica. Man, three questions in and I’ve already got my biases established ha. Favourite non-main character? Probably Jack Geller. Least favourite character (main)? Joey. I was always too impatient for his dumb ass. He’s adorable though.
Least favourite character (not main)? EMILY for days. They wasted so many episodes and storylines dragging her ass through them. I also kinda hated Amy. Funniest? Chandler, and this is going to be unpopular: Ross. He’s funny when he’s not being a jackass. Sweetest? ...Chandler. That episode where Monica ‘freaked’ him out by pretending to book a wedding venue when it turned out Chandler loved the place and ended up proposing to her was the sweetest. Best looking? Rachel. Girl’s style was always on point. Most mature? Phoebe trumps them all so hard. She lived through the Civil War, World War I, lost her mom, lived on the streets, and did so many shady things before landing in that apartment of theirs – she’s a kook but she’s a hella smart kook. Most immature? Has to be a mix of Joey and Rachel. And Ross.
Most annoying? Joey had his annoying moments especially the episode where he tries to speak French!!!!!!!!! but I love all of them just the same. Relationships Favourite couple? CHANDLER AND MONICA Least favourite couple? Joey and Rachel when they got together. I liked the slow burn that preceded the whole thing, but when the writers mashed them together, the execution was just ughhhh. I hated Ross/Julie, Monica/Pete, and Ross/Emily too. Favourite couple that wasn’t a main couple? Oh oof, I guess I’ve listed them all there. ^ Couple you wish would’ve happened? Chandler and Rachel. Their cheesecake episode was awesome.
Best friendship? Monica/Chandler and Joey/Chandler. The two that had the worst friendship? Phoebe and Ross were the two that just clicked the least lmao. Ross was too serious and too nerdy and Phoebe was more liberal and very eccentric. They had that debate on evolution once which I found hard to watch lmao, and not to mention that Ross is the biggest baby in the group whereas Phoebe had to grow up earlier than all of them because of her awful childhood. Couple you’re surprised happened? Rachel and Joey, obviously. Overrated couple? Ross and Rachel. They’re so hyped up when in reality, they were on and off for ten deadass seasons??? It was stretched for so long that it’s very easy to lose interest in it. Most underrated friendship? Phoebe and Ross, I guess. They weren’t very close, but I remember how Ross got Phoebe a bike when he found out she never had her own. That gets overshadowed a lot but I found that episode very sweet. Phoebe/Joey is also pretty underrated. You and them Which character would you be? I’m already Monica. Which character would you wanna be bffs with? Rachel hahaha. Monica’s too high-strung, Phoebe’s crazy, I’d get annoyed with Ross’ bitchfests, Joey is a little immature for my liking, and I feel like I’ll eventually get offended by Chandler’s sarcasm, so I’d go with Rachel.   Who would you date? Chandler. Who would get on your nerves? Joey or Ross. Who can you relate to the most? Monica AF. Organized, obsessed with weddings, obsessed with kids, loves spreadsheets, makes everything a competition, loves food, the mom of the group...all of this is me. Which character pulls on your heartstrings the most (gives you feels)? Chandler aaaahhhhhhhhh. Who would you makeout with? Monica. Show Funniest moment or episode? There’s a lot of em, so let me keep a list:
The episode with the quiz
Joey putting the pieces together about Chandler and Monica
“Ross hasn’t worked in the museum for a year” “Monica and Chandler aRE LIVING TOGETHER” “Ross married Rachel in Vegas anD GOT DIVORCED, /AGAIN/” “I love Jacques Costeau” “I wasn’t supposed to put beef in the trifle” “I wanna GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”
Ross spelling out F-I-N-E
They don’t know that we know they know they now
Saddest moment or episode? Monica finding out they can’t have kids, Phoebe having to part with the triplets, Erica almost giving up on Chandler and Monica because they lied, and the final goshdarn episode. Moment or episode that melted your heart? When Monica made Thanksgiving dinner, only for Joey to ruin it because Monica had to answer the phone, then when Chandler told on Joey, she was like “I don’t care, the adoption agency called and we’re having a baby” :’( Best episode/moment? I can think of so many depending on what kind of episode you’re asking for, but the first ones I can think of off the top of my head are the quiz, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s resolutions episodes, and the one where Chandler and Phoebe pretend to be into each other to see who breaks first. Cringiest moment? A lot of Season 10 stuff was cringey just cos everything felt forced by that point. I also didn’t like the scene where Chandler was checking out their home-sitter’s bra because Monica was convinced she was stealing from her wardrobe lmao. Oh and the one with Ross’ list about Rachel. OH and Joey failing so bad at French. They def had their cringey moments lmao. Worst moment/episode? The one where Pete decides to be a UFC star(????) was so fucking random. There’s also an episode that shows their alternative lives - Monica was still chubby, Phoebe was a bitchy executive...I forget the rest because I’ve only seen it once cos the whole thing was pretty pointless. Best season? The ones in the middle. Best quote? “It’s an electric drill. You get me, YOU KILL ME” or “Gum would be perfection.” Joey Best trait? He’s adorably clumsy and he’s also pretty confident. Worst trait? He has his creepy tendencies, he doesn’t share food, and he’s too stupid for my humor to appreciate him. Who should he have ended up with? Definitely Phoebe. Was he just a player or a sweetheart? Meh. He was a player. If Matt LeBlanc couldn’t play him, who should’ve? Chandler His best season? I’m not familiar which season it is but it has to be the one where he decided he was going to marry Monica. Chandler was always the most insecure out of the six who had a lot of childhood issues and as a result, was perpetually afraid of committing and being serious and actually being an adult. Deciding that he knew he wanted to marry Monica is such an underrated pivotal moment for him. Funny or annoying? FUNNY.  Why did he have trouble with girls? Because he’s so awkward.  If Matthew Perry couldn’t play him who should’ve? Best trait? He really cares.
Worst trait? He hates himself and uses humor to mask everything lol. Ross Best trait? He’s a sweetheart and looks after the girls the most.  Worst trait? Immature and cocky as fuck and loves to kiss his own ass. Which of his gfs/wives do you like best? Rachel. Funny or annoying? I’m split. Everyone hates Ross but he’s actually pretty funny to me lmao, but only when he’s not being sexist or trash. If David couldn’t play him who should’ve? Smart or dumb? Academically smart, pretty dumb in life. Phoebe Best trait? She’s highkey the most mature of all of the friends. Worst trait? She can be a liar. Weird or awesome? She can be both!!! Best song? Either the Santa song (”Rachel and Chandler, hshsshhshsh handler!”) or the shower song (”And tegrin spelled backwards is nirget”). Both slap. Best relationship? That guy from Minsk, David. That highkey should’ve happened. Did she have a better friendship with Monica or Rachel? Tbh Rachel. Monica’s very...analytic and Phoebe doesn’t care. Total opposites. Did she really wanna get with Joey or was it all a joke? It’s all a joke, but I wouldn’t be surprised or offended if they ended up together in some alternative universe. Did she really hate Ross? Probably aspects of Ross, but not fully. Rachel Was she secretly a bitch? She was openly a bitch lmao. Best relationship besides Ross? I hated all of her boyfriends. Probably Joey. YEA I SAID IT Best trait? She grew up so much in the show and I’m so proud of her <3 She went from fully dependent on her dad’s credit cards to getting her dream jobs and being a really good mother and ugh, I just feel for her. Worst trait? She was still the biggest baby in the show. Monica Best trait? She’s the mom of the group. Nothing better than that. Worst trait? She was overly competitive sometimes. Put together & organized or a stressed mess? Definitely put together and organized. She was also stressed, but she was never a mess. Would you find it hard to live with her cause of her cleaning issues? No, we’d be the same more or less. Was Richard too old for her? Yes. Richard knew her since she was little, which makes it worse. Short or long hair? Long. Do you think the fat jokes are funny or mean? Mean, but then again they were jokes of their time so idk why people today are being SO LOUD crying foul over it. More questions Were they on a break? Yes they were. I will defend this to my death. They were on a break after that very bad phone call and Rachel immediately invited his dude-friend over without thinking of Ross. Ross had every reason to be with a girl. Was Gunther weird or kinda cool? He was cool. I loved that they kept him as a recurring character.
Should it have ended sooner, later or when it did? They ended it perfectly. Some elements of season 10 already felt inorganic and unnecessary, but if we didn’t get the last season then we never would’ve seen Chandler and Monica’s twins and Rachel getting off the plane. I’m fine with the way they ultimately paced the show. Based off looks, who of the six would’ve looked best together? Chandler and Monica.

Myanmar
It’s worth the wait guys, BIG update incoming. Our whole trip around Myanmar is documented above in another sweet video which is in no way cheesy or produced with basic video editing skills. Enjoy, share, subscribe, like, dislike, troll or completely ignore. Split below by GC & EC, because Greg doesn’t want people thinking he’s writing things like OMG and literally. GC
First stop Mandalay. Have you all heard to Robbie song ‘Road to Mandalay’? No? Just me then - I listened to it at least three times on plane, it’s a classic. Anyway, Mandalay is the second biggest city in Myanmar so I was expecting, well a city… don’t get me wrong it was great, but it looked like a village. For one, there were a few cows and secondly, the place didn’t even have street lamps. Culture shock.
We took our first bus to Bagan after two nights in the city that sleeps (once the sun goes down). We stayed in our first hostel hoping to meet some travelling friends. Once we arrived though we experienced something I had yet to come across - a massive bunch of ‘’Brag-lers’’. These are the people who sit in hostels swapping authentic stories of their time on “the road” and essentially playing travelling top trumps‘‘well I once camped out under the stars in the Gaza Strip, ya’’. These particular Brag-lers were telling people about their recent trip to Afghanistan. Greg was desperate to tell them about Gary’s 30th birthday down Butlins but I was too hungry and it was way past feeding time.
The next day it was time for our first real adventure. I’d signed us up to a 7am tour around the temples… the only thing was this tour was on e-bike not foot. So pre 7am I had nearly found my way into the trunk of a tree and was getting ready to make a complete fool out of myself in front of new possible travelling pals. Luckily, I wasn’t the only novice/ incompetent driver, and the uneasy-ness got me some new people to talk to.
I tell you what, I felt like bloody Lara Croft (pics don’t do me justice, but ask Greg). We were whipping around like tomb raiders. It’s incredible, 2000 temples just there for you to explore.
After more exploring it was time for more adventure - this time on foot. How hard is trekking after all eh? It’s just walking. Ha…. little did I know.
It was time to take our first night bus to Kalaw. I’d never taken a night bus before and was a little nervous as I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew is these things do not have toilets so it could all go Pete Tong…. We were waiting at the bus station when I felt this pang in my tummy. Just nerves I thought. The bus came and Greg hurried me on… as I sat down the movement happened and I was desperate. I started sweating. In my head “these buses don’t have loos” was spinning around and I thought this was it. I was going to shit myself on a bus, two weeks in…. Luckily the bus station had an insect infested loo with my name on it. It was dangerously close to another classic Catchpole poo story.
So here we were in Kalaw about to embark on near enough 20 kilometres a day. As I work in miles I presumed this would be a lovely walk stopping for drinks and snacks until we reached our beds for the night. Our guide was also called WinWin - we couldn’t bloody lose. We walked, and we walked and we walked. Bloody hell we walked for ages, and not just up hills or mountains, across rivers as well. A good night’s sleep was on the horizon.
Would you classify a good night’s sleep as a. A place on a hard wooden floor, b. in a barn that rattled so much when the wind blew you were continuously woken up or c. above a smelly buffalo? Yeh, well we got all three. Talk about lucky. Oh and there was no running water either.
The second day was pretty similar, although to top it off it was raining. Boy oh boy do I love trekking. The rain not only soaked us, it made walking downhill so much more fun. As you can imagine I spent a lot of the time making use of my big bum to cushion various falls.
In all seriousness though, taking in the countryside and WinWin’s cooking, made this a great experience. One we said we would do again after several beers and gins.
We were rewarded with Inle Lake at the end. This two night stay consisted of massages, sleep, a winery and two fantastic meals at the only Indian restaurant ever dedicated to Eminem. We met Stan. EC
When we left Inle Lake we asked our hostel the best way to get to Ngpalli (a resort on the west coast). “Why would you want to go there? It’s torrential, not sure you can even get a bus there”. Me and Emma have a habit of visiting places when there’s a monsoon happening. It’s the best time to see a country and really understand it, yah…nothing to do with our lack of organisational skills.
Anyway, determined not to let a bit of rain put us off we decided to crack on and get a 20 hour journey (5 taxis/coaches) to seaside town Ngwe Saung (just south of Ngpalli). When we got there it felt like we’d arrived in a ghost town, with most hotels, shops and restaurants all boarded up (see hotel pic). Turns out the town basically shuts down in the month of June to prepare for a torrential onslaught. There was no sign of Vodka RedBull buckets, stalls selling anklets or elephant travelling pants. We’d have to find another way to get by.
When we were shown our room, the guy at the hostel proudly boasted that we had access to 24 hour electricity. In only two weeks we had become such travellers we were now going so far off the beaten track that literally nobody else was there, not even the locals. Aside from a handful of fisherman, we essentially had a 5km stretch of coastline to ourselves (too much sauce). One day we hired a bike out and took it across a local “ferry” to a deserted stretch of coast where you can drive along. Three days of bare zen. However, the KFC right outside our next hostel in Yangon was an essential requirement when booking. Zen’s great and all that but nang chicken is where you can also find inner peace.
Always looking for different ways to get scammed as tourists we decided to get our palms read in Yangon. Our con man palm reader suggested that I have a temper I need to control and that I would need a kidney operation in my 30s. After studying Emma’s palms for a few moments he proclaimed that Emma enjoyed music, dancing and alcohol. The first two were fine but she should limit the latter. Maybe this guy had special powers after all. Or perhaps I look like and angry man who needs the toilet and Emma looks like your typical “white girl wasted” foreigner. Shablam.
Yangon isn’t that pretty, but what it lacks in any genuine attraction it makes up for in wackiness. A temple full of snakes fed popcorn by monks, a museum about drug taking (with scary junky manikins) and an abandoned amusement park…See wicked mash up video above for more.
So now we’re off to Chiang Mai, Myanmar has been amazing. Oh and it’s pronounced “me-ah-mah”. Oh, and can you guys stop calling it Burma, that’s really culturally insensitive, next stop Rhodesia. Political banter. GC

48cm:Rick Vosper: E-bikes, part three: new room, new elephants
In part one of this series, we looked at the overall size of the IBD portion of the e-bike market relative to EBD (independent or single-brand e-bike-only retailers) and consumer-direct sales (25-30% apiece to the IBD and EBD by units, the rest to direct). In part two, we dug a little deeper into the EBD market and discussed whether it will ultimately merge with the traditional IBD and IBD brands) or remain autonomous (the answer depends on who you talk to). And now it’s time to unpack the whole What Happens Nextpiece of the equation.
Problem is, there are a couple additional variables in that equation which, in typical bike industry fashion, no one seems to want to talk about. So let’s talk about them anyway. I’m referring to the rise of e-bike share/rental programs financed by companies with functionally limitless budgets, and the introduction of entire new e-bike brands by giant auto and motorcycle companies—as much as fifty times larger than even the biggest bike industry brands.  There are a couple additional variables in that equation which, in typical bike industry fashion, no one seems to want to talk about.
Bikeshare was never about bikes ... and that goes double for e-bikeshare
It seems increasingly likely the bikeshare market will leapfrog its pedal-only phase and move directly to e-bikes This is especially true in hilly cities like Seattle or San Francisco in the West or San Boston or Pittsburgh in the East. Ultimately, any discussion of bikeshare becomes, de facto, a discussion of e-bikeshare.
But the bikeshare business is not primarily about bikes (or even e-bikes) as much as it is about gaining and controlling share of vehicular traffic for companies like Lyft and Uber. The latter famously acquired e-bikeshare company Jump a year ago at a rumored $200 million. Lyft acquired bikeshare company Motivate in November, poured $100 million into programs for New York city alone, and announced the addition of more than 600 of Ford's GoBike e-bikes to its fleet a month later.
These businesses are operating under an entirely different set of rules from the traditional bike business. But whether we like it or not, what they do will impact what we do. It’s not a question of whether or when, but one of how and, more importantly, how much.
For purposes of this discussion, let’s set aside the swarming gnat-cloud of practical issues confronting bikeshare initiatives — docked vs dockless, injuries and lawsuits, stolen or abandoned vehicles blocking sidewalks or impeding street traffic, bicycle graveyards, and on and on — and focus purely on the bike-business aspects.
Will bikeshare programs put more Americans on bikes? Almost certainly. Will that translate to increased sales for local bike shops? Not so much, if at all.
The debate goes like this: more people riding and enjoying bikes through bikeshare means more potential bike owners, people who find it more convenient and economical to buy a bike than rent one. Therefore, the rise of bikeshare means more bike sales long-term. But there’s a counter-argument too, which says that, in addition to creating new riders, bikeshare will also pull potential bike owners — people who would normally have bought IBD-quality bikes anyway — away from purchases and into rentals. At the end of the day, it’s anybody’s guess.
Will bikeshare programs put more Americans on bikes? Almost certainly. Will that translate to increased sales for local bike shops? Not so much, if at all.
My opinion is that any gains or losses will be marginal, and that concerns about bikeshare — and specifically, e-bikeshare — are at best a distraction for those of us who actually try to make a living making and selling bikes, electrified or otherwise. But industry doomsayers can take heart from the fact that there’s still plenty of new competition coming up, and aimed straight at the heart of our core business, too.
Welcome our new motor sports overlords
Of much greater importance than bikeshare is the role of auto and motorcycle companies as direct e-bike competitors. Their products will end up going head to head with those from traditional bike companies, not to mention established e-bike-only brands like Pedego or Rad Power. I did a quick count the other day and with a little help from Google, came up with a dozen major car and motorcycle brands who are either already in the e-bike business, claiming they will be any day now, or, like Tesla and Harley-Davidson, teasing the possibility.
I asked e-bike consultant Ed Benjamin of eCycleElectric about car companies and e-bikes.
"I have the good fortune to have four automotive industry clients," he says, although he declines to name specific brands. "And I've learned a bit from them. These guys are willing to put in an enormous R&D investment before they put a product out. It's sort of the opposite of the bicycle world. And the bottom line is, quality of the products is much better than what we're getting the bicycle business.
"(Car companies) bring astonishing resources and quality and value to their bicycle products. But ... they have no idea how to sell bikes." — Ed Benjamin
"Their new vehicles go through two years of testing before they go to market. (Car companies) bring astonishing resources and quality and value to their bicycle products. But...they have no idea how to sell bikes. They are confused about the whole ‘first and last mile’ thing. But they have an enormously powerful potential resource with auto dealers, marketing expertise, and budget. So far their dealers haven't been interested in e-bikes, despite the fact that an electric bike has better selling margin than some small sedans."
Among many others, General Motors wants a piece of the e-bike business. In November, GM announced it would begin two e-bike models consumer-direct in 2019 in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, and of course rumors have been flying about a North American presence ever since.
“I see GM as more of a market enhancer than a disrupter, just because it's going to bring more people into bikes, including people who might not be familiar with bike brands today. We're looking for people who live and work in cities, and they're looking for alternatives that work for them and the way they live. I call it being 'transportation agnostic.'”
That’s General Motors’ Hannah Parish, and she is positively bubbly about the positive effects her employer’s e-bikes might have not just for the IBD, but the entire cycling world at large. But Parish isn’t just another corporate shill. She’s global director of GM’s ARĪV group (fancypants crowdsourced spelling and all), and comes to the conversation with heavyweight marketing credentials from the IBD side of the business. These include stints as head of marketing for Specialized Canada and director of marketing for the CSG (Cannondale et al) brand portfolio.
When asked about initial sell-in of GM’s e-bikes in Europe, Parish is upbeat but nonspecific. “So far, so good,” she says diplomatically. “We're very pleased with how our presales have been going.”
The initial model for the Germany and Benelux launch will be consumer-direct, she explains. Assembly when needed (one model, the folding Merge, arrives fully assembled and ready to ride) and service/warranty will be supported by German provider Live Cycle, which has a brick and mortar presence in a number of German cities as well as mobile outreach, according to the Live Cycle website.
But when I press Parish for more information about GM’s sales channel plans, things get very interesting, very quickly.
“We'll have a multichannel approach,” she says. “In April, we've announced we'll be shipping product, first in the e-commerce channel and eventually including the ability to sell into IBDs, large retailers, and national accounts. Of course we're a startup, so we'll add those incremental channels over time. As I like to say, we fish where the fish are."
I note we had a corporate minder with us on our call, a nice woman from GM’s advanced technology communications group. Since there were no howls of outrage following Parish’s last statement, it’s safe to conclude this information is now what corporate types like to call “market-facing.”
Let’s start with the sort of “click and collect” model that goes live for GM this month in parts of Europe, and explore how it might apply to the USA, I suggest. “When we think about the United States, we haven't made the plans yet, so I can't tell you," Parish says. “I wish I could give you something, but I can't speculate.”
Fair enough. But last time I checked, Velofix had fifty-one mobile sites in the USA and eighteen in Canada. And according to Beeline CEO Pete Small, his company’s network of mobile service providers now includes more than 200 participating dealers with 350+ brick and mortar locations in the US. That number includes its Powered By Beeline partners via parent brand Accell.
One or both of these companies could support a whole lot of e-bike sales, which is another way of saying “provide a cost-effective, scalable solution to that thorny ‘last mile’ challenge.”
And it’s by no means the only solution.
Hmm, lessee. Global brand recognition, proven track for reliable with high-quality consumer products. Know any hungry IBD-segment retailers who might be interested in taking on an e-bike line like that? Well … how about the more than half of all US bike shops who don’t currently have their available floor space hamstrung by agreements with Trek, Specialized or Giant, for starters? And then there’s every EBD shop not already locked in with Pedego.
That’s a lot of prospective dealers. And, at least potentially, a staggering number of e-bike sales.
Now take that model and multiply it by more than a dozen nascent e-bike brands, from corporate behemoths like GM, Toyota, BMW and Yamaha to sexy boutique marques like Porsche, Maserati, Ducati and Buell, and you have the power to move markets. Yes, even if only a fraction of these brands end up adopting the model. Not to mention the resources to empowering a currently underserved segment of the retail base, perhaps even toppling the dominant bike industry paradigm.
A possibility that big deserves a special name. I think I’ll call it ... Bike 4.0.
