Dear Coral, 

This week begins my travels in the south of Chile and I am kicking it off with a few first days in Pucón with friends. We arrived in two groups and each with a different schedule and following destination - some leaving earlier to Valdivia, some leaving later straight to Puerto Varas, me heading to Chiloé later - so on Saturday I found myself taking the morning bus to El Cañi sanctuary to embark on a hike. 

How lovely it was to be in the south - summer is coming and Santiago is gross with its harsh, dry heat in the city and noise. Right outside the hostel is the beautifully tranquil Lago Villarica and this hike was just a quick 30-minute bus ride away. As I began my trek, backpack strapped across my chest and hips, map in hand, I realized that this was my first time hiking alone. 

All these years of hiking - and first time alone! It was a similar realization when I visited Uruguay - all these years of traveling and only then was my first solo travel. The hike takes you through farm ranches, quiet cows napping under shade or grazing peacefully, it then takes you uphill, along sandy trails on which I kept choosing the shady side. Afterwards, you are rewarded with a lovely walk (on flat ground!) through the forest until you see, on this 25º day, snow. It hugs the side of the lake that opens up to you, and then heads up towards the peak, but the snow covers the path, leaving only muddy footprints that try to suggest secure paths, but sometimes they falter and you slip. 

From the top, one can peak down at the lake and see the snowy heads of three volcanoes in neighborhood. Perhaps not an incredibly majestic view, but tranquil and rewarding. I take out my thermos of hot water and sip - I am still in my short sleeves and the occasional gush of wind brings a chill, but there I am, sitting in the sun, enjoying the view for a good 30 minutes before I slip my way down for a lakeside meditation. 

It’s been so long since I hiked! How lovely it was to be outside, to be with myself (and how fast that time past, how peaceful I was in my own company), to meet strangers on the trail.

Off to a good start in the South & grateful for the opportunity to explore –
