Eileen and Rebecca 🌹 Dancing to “Tell Him” and “All These Things”
At that moment, I felt happy. Meeting Rebecca was like learning to dance, discovering jazz. It was like falling in love for the first time. I had always been waiting for my future to erupt around me in an avalanche of glory, and now I felt it was really happening. Rebecca was all it took. Per aspera ad astra. Eileen By Ottessa Moshfegh

Long Goes The Night (Longer The Day)
“Rebecca was good company."

⌗ double drabble ⌗ implied/referenced drug abuse ⌗ canonical abuse ⌗ on the run ⌗ road trips... in quotation marks ⌗ implied/referenced kidnapping ⌗ unreliable narrator ⌗ it's eileen y'all ⌗ title from the demo version of "teclo" by pj harvey
Kids went on road trips when Eileen was younger, but Eileen never did. She never felt like she was missing out, though, because whenever Joyce or Mary or the other girls in her school talked about watching Massachusetts melt into Connecticut and sipping on Shirley Temples on, all she could think about was how unpleasant it would be to do any of that with her father. He couldn’t go on long drives without his medication. If he did, he’d get mean. Same with sleeping, and going out when the sun was bright enough to hurt his dilated eyes: Eileen, close the blinds, dammit!
So, Eileen didn’t feel like anything was robbed from her, really , but still, she felt like she was filling in some sort of gap. Eileen didn’t travel. She didn’t drive anywhere, either, besides to the grocery store or work. She certainly didn’t drive with company, especially company as beautiful as Rebecca St. John.
And, of course, Rebecca was good company. She always was. She didn’t backseat-drive like her mother apparently used to, the reason why her dad said he’d started taking his medication in the first place. She sat with her hands in her lap, eyes looking very far away. She was peaceful. She knew where she belonged. She knew that she and Eileen were intertwined in fate, that everything was in its right place, and that they’d found each other like everyone did in fairytales, even in the dirt and grit of Moorehead.
“I’m going to stop and get some water,” said Eileen softly. “Do you want anything?”
Rebecca shook her head. Docile, peaceful, sleepy. She didn’t nag like her mother apparently used to, either, so Eileen smiled. Rebecca was good company.
