The Top 10 Things To Make Sure Your Website Has, Part 1
Tumblr media
There are a lot of components that go into making a functional, performance website. It is important to understand the significance of each of these components and how, when used correctly, can increase the ranking and relevance of your individual pages of your website and your entire website.
The components that can have the largest effect on the relevance of your website are the ones that are most likely to not be done by the company you are paying to create your website and marketing of your company. Unfortunately, most people outside of the website building industry do not know how to check to make sure these are being completed like they should be.
Here are 5 of the top 10 things to make sure that your website has:
Image Tags
It is a given that your website is going to have images. What you may not have are the alt image tags that tell the Google spiders or bots (how Google reads the text and images on your site but can’t actually see the image). You have to put in the correct text that will tell Google what the picture is. An image tag that is properly filled out tells what the picture is about in addition to how to categorize the picture within Google. In addition to the search result listing, there is also an image listing that allows you to search for images. This is how and where your images are ranked, and the higher the ranking of your images because of the alt image tags, then the higher rankings you will see for your website.
There are important things that you need to remember about image tags. One of these is that image tags support accessibility features for the vision impaired or for those who have low vision. They have their browser set to low vision, which gives an option for a robot to read the page to the user. If the robot comes to an image that does not have an image tag, it just says “image”. Google is huge on supporting the disabled, so if your website has the image tags on your pictures, then the robot will be able to read what the image is about, and your website will be returned as a relevant return on the search.
If your pictures are not tagged with alt image tags, then you will see a lower ranking and lower relevance of your website. You don’t want to have a lower website ranking because of just simply not tagging your images. Five Dog Solutions takes the time to tag all of the images on your website to help increase the relevance of not only your images, but your website as well.
Correct Page Titles
When Google comes to your website to index your pages, it wants to know how your site is laid out and if the site is laid out comprehensively. The pages within your website should reflect a data structure that allows Google to come to your site and see what your site is about. You are able to do this through the titles of your pages. You can think of a page title as the “Extra, Extra Read All About It!” that you would see in a newspaper. The page title and the top header tag should be used together and when correctly done, will talk about what the page is about and what the substance is within the page.
If your website is not equipped with proper page titles, then Google gives your website a lower ranking. In addition to the lower ranking, when your site is indexed, Google can become confused if it sees subcategories above a higher level category. The problem with this is that Google will not know what your website is talking about in your pages and does not know what your website is about overall.
Five Dog Solutions takes the time to sit down with you and discuss what the individual pages titles should be and where the pages fall when you look at the overall picture of your website.
Header Structures
Header structures work hand in hand with the page titles of your website. You have to teach and show Google what your site is about through the header structure and the page titles. The headers are used to keep the page titles where you can easily find them. You can think of the header structure as a filing cabinet system. The subject of your website is the entire filing cabinet. Each drawer on the filing cabinet represents a category of that subject. Within each drawer, you find all of the manilla folders or all of the information that supports the subcategory.
If not constructed properly, websites can be confusing to navigate (for Google and for viewers of your website), the site may be not indexed correctly or could be indexed slowly, and your site could have a high bounce rate (those who view your site expecting one thing and seeing another on your site and leaving).
Five Dog Solutions carefully builds out the structure of your website to ensure that it is easy to navigate, it will indexed correctly, and will be viewed by those who are actually interested in your company’s products or services.
Fresh Content
When it comes to content on your website, you can quickly begin to feel overwhelmed, especially if you already have a website but are looking to improve the performance of the website. Google has helped in cornering the market in knowing every word that is on the Internet as well as the structure that the word is in. If you already have a website, your site has already been accredited with the content on your site. The old days of building a website and going to other websites and pulling their content onto your site are over.
You have to have fresh content on every page of your website that has not been written anywhere else. There are some things that you have to keep in mind when writing fresh content for your website. One of these is to make sure that your content is written, whether you are writing it or your marketing team is writing the page, at a Kincade level of 5.5, meaning the content is written at a level for a 5th grader with a 5th month reading level. The content on your website should also be written in a second person conversational tone, in other words, your content should be written similar to how most people talk.
Five Dog Solutions makes sure that you will have fresh and unique content that is published to our website on a timely basis to make sure that Google is constantly coming back to your site. As long as Google sees that you are adding fresh content, then your site will be seen as having a higher relevance. If you don’t add fresh content to your site, Google comes back less and less often until eventually, they may not come back at all.
Social Connections
A major part of the latest update from Google is the social connections of your website. The more relevant the information is on your website, then the higher relevance that Google will give you for your website. This is due to the robots that read what your website is about when Google indexes your site. In Google’s mind, if a piece of information from your website is shared from one human to another human, then it must have some value to the information because the first individual found enough value to share.
This is the cornerstone of being able to understand how Google views the content that you have written on the pages of your website. If you have pages on your website that do not have content that is valued enough to be shared, then Google will not give you the bonus feature of social connections to help with the buoyancy of your website. On the other hand, if you have content that is valued enough by viewers to share with others, then Google will see your website as a high quality site that contains content that is able to answer public questions.
Five Dog Solutions makes sure that your website is connected through all of your socials and the content that is on your website is relevant and values enough to be shared by the viewers of your website.
Don’t let your marketing company take advantage of you by only giving you a half-built website. Come by Five Dog Solutions and see which of these components is missing from your website and begin working with an online marketing company who actually cares about what goes into the building of your website and making sure your website stays relevant in the eyes of Google.
