The two boats were connected to each other, when the grappling hooks of the Adventure reached their objective, the pirates threw grenades made of dust, along with bottles full of shrapnel. Teach and his men advanced across the deck as the smoke cleared. The deck seemed empty except for a small group of soldiers pointing at them from the stern. At that moment, the rest of Maynard's men came out of the hold screaming, swords in the air and firing. The pirates were surprised and their expressions changed, now the king's soldiers were much more numerous and at the head was Robert Maynard who was smiling victoriously.Both crews fought fiercely over the blood and the remains of bodies scattered on the wood of the deck, victims of the previous naval battle. Edward and Maynard shot at each other, the pirate drew his sword and managed to break Maynard's. With a clear numerical disadvantage, the pirates were withdrawn to a corner, allowing the crew of the Jane to surround Maynard and Teach, being completely isolated. Maynard fell back preparing a new shot but Teach advanced to attack him again, but in that instant, one of Maynard's soldiers pierced Blackbeard's neck with his sword. The pirate fell seriously wounded and already on the ground, the rest of the soldiers threw themselves on him. The remaining pirates surrendered, being captured by the Ranger's crew. Maynard later examined Teach's lifeless body and was surprised to see that the pirate had been shot at least five times before falling to the ground, and the sword impaled another twenty times. Teach's head was placed on the bowsprit of the british corvette and his body was thrown into the darkness of the ocean. A stopped pocket watch found in the harbor in 1969 indicated that it occurred around 11:43 a.m. Known as the “storehouse and treasury of the West Indies”, and as "one of the wickedest places on Earth", it was, at the time, the unofficial capital of Jamaica, one of the busiest and wealthiest ports in the West Indies, and a common home port for many of the privateers and pirates operating within the Caribbean Sea. The earthquake caused most of the city to sink below sea level.
