Amalthea (uh-maal-thee-uh), a moon of Jupiter
Amalthea was discovered on September 9, 1892 by Edward Emerson Barnard.
It is the third closest moon from the planet, and orbits near the larger moon Io. It’s also the reddest object in the whole solar system. A theory for why this is is that it is caused by Jupiter’s strong magnetic field.

Here’s a picture of Amalthea’s shadow on Jupiter.
This was actually a pretty interesting moon to learn about, and I’m glad that I know more about it. Before this, I didn’t even know that it existed.

That’s Barnard’s Runaway Star, to you!
In addition to (currently!) being the closest un–grouped star to our Sun, this star has the largest “proper motion” of any nearby star. That is to say, a series of observations over time will show something of the relative motion of stars within the Galactic spiral arm. The nearer ones will appear from our perspective to move faster than the more distant ones ; but this effect of perspective can be corrected for mathematically. This is known as the proper, as opposed to the apparent, motion. American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard worked out that this particular nearby star was actually moving very quickly indeed, earning it a most peculiar appellation.

IAC scientists detect a ‘sub-Earth’ orbiting Barnard’s star, the nearest isolated star to the Sun
The single star nearest to the Sun is called Barnard’s star. A team of researchers led by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), has recently detected a ‘sub-Earth’ orbiting it. This exoplanet, called Barnard b has at least half the mass of Venus and orbits rapidly around its star, so that its year lasts only a little over three Earth days.
This new exoplanet is sixteen times nearer to Barnard’d star than Mercury is to the Sun, and has a surface temperature close to 125oC, so it does not have liquid water on its surface. This discovery, led by the IAC in collaboration with a number of international centres was obtained with spectra from the ESPRESSO  spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Plunge into the darker side of the night sky, and get to know dark nebulae. Dark nebulae – or absorption nebulae – are clouds of gas and dust in space that are dense enough to obscure and block light from background stars. These vast clouds are mostly composed of molecular hydrogen. Often, they are locations where material is coalescing to form new stars. American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard was the first to create a large catalog of 182 dark nebulae in the year 1919. Since then, hundreds more have been found and charted in our Milky Way galaxy.
