Mr. Hanson: As you are no doubt aware, I’ve been advocating for improvements to highway 28 since I was first elected in 2015. Highway 28 is the main highway through my constituency, a constituency that produces 30 per cent of the bitumen royalties for this province. To the minister of transportation: does the economic benefit of a region influence decisions into allocation of funding for highways and infrastructure?
Mr. Dreeshen: Well, I’d like to thank the hon. Member for Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul for his question, especially today, which is a very exciting day for the NDP as their coalition partner just appointed their new Liberal leader, John Roggeveen. It’ll be interesting to see what deals come out when the new Liberal leader meets with his NDP counterpart.

A bill that would empower the Alberta government to remove elected municipal officials or strike down local bylaws is an "attack on local democracy," says the capital city's mayor.
Bill 20, the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, was announced Thursday and makes dozens of amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act and the Municipal Government Act (MGA).
"I don't know who has asked for this," Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi told CTV News Edmonton Friday. "I don't know what problem the province is trying to solve when there are so many other priorities that they should be focused on." [...]
"When the province writes laws, it puts it through the legislative system where it can be debated," said Eric Adams, a constitutional law expert at the University of Alberta.
"When a law hands that power to the cabinet, then that legislative scrutiny falls completely away and now it's the cabinet themselves," he continued. "Realistically, the premier and the premier's office exercises the most of that power." [...]

Notes from the poster @el-shab-hussein: Provincial governments are always pissed about federal controlling just about anything within provincial politics, but now they also want to control municipal ones. This is what I mean when I say this is just a repeat of U.S. 'states' rights' nonsense which is exclusively used to screw over municipalities into even sharper neoliberalism.

various odds and ends grandma foisted off on me (I'm lucky, my aunt got 3 flower vases and the what me and her partner agree is the world's ugliest blown-glass bowl. she somehow likes the colors though?)
top photo from left to right: her old teapot from when I was a kid, German Castle Themed Soup Tureen, whoops bird mug (from a local artist and not grandma), cream and sugar set with forgotten origins, dolphin ornament mom got her from West Edmonton Mall (?) many years ago (we used to have an identical one so I was VERY HYPE when she pulled it out of the back of a kitchen cabinet), depression glass cream jug, sleeping bunny ornament that my mom wants but that may end up in my apartment if dad threatens to get rid of it (he's a pathological ultra-minimalist and not in a cute instagrammable way).
second photo: set of mildly ugly stone bookends my grandpa made. she used to have a set I thought were sooooo pretty so when she asked if I wanted bookends I was like hell yeah....and now I have these. at least they're heavy? annnnd a vase grandma hand-painted that was apparently a gift for my uncle at one point but ended up back in her house and is now going in the unused corner of my bathroom counter.
#should not have taken this much stuff but grandma is always on a mission to offload a lifetime's worth of tchotchkes on unsuspecting family#when i get old i need to adopt a grandchild to offload tchotchkes onto#side note we agreed the tureen is probably too old to put soup in and should be decorative#but i will endeavor to make a german soup in its honor#now i need to get up and. put this shit somewhere.

Monuments to honour the First Ukrainian Division have caused controversy in recent years.
In 2021, a statue of Ukrainian military leader Roman Shukhevych and a monument to the fighters of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division in Edmonton were vandalized by someone who spray painted them with the words "Actual Nazi."
The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center said at the time that it had been advocating for their removal for decades.
In 2020, a monument to the Waffen-SS Galicia Division in Oakville, Ont., was vandalized in a similar way.
The decision to admit Ukrainian immigrants who had served in the SS Waffen Division in the post-war period was contentious, with Jewish groups arguing they should be barred from the country.
The International Military Tribunal in Nuremburg declared the SS to be a criminal organization, including the SS Waffen in that declaration.
The Waffen-SS Galicia Division surrendered to the British army in 1945, and just over 8,000 men were moved to the United Kingdom in 1947.
In 1950, the federal cabinet decided to allow Ukrainians living in the U.K. to come to Canada "notwithstanding their service in the German army provided they are otherwise admissible. These Ukrainians should be subject to special security screening, but should not be rejected on the grounds of their service in the German army."
In 1985, then-prime minister Brian Mulroney called for a royal commission to examine whether Canada had become a haven for war criminals.
The Deschenes Commission found there were about 600 former members of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division living in Canada at the time. But Justice Jules Deschenes said membership in the division did not itself constitute a war crime.

The Alpha's Boy - Chapter 10 - Part 1
Book Two In : The Alpha's Trilogy
*Warning Adult Content*
Alistair 'Star' Claymore-Phoenix
My body hurt, everything was sore, my muscles ached in places I had no idea they could ache, this is why I didn't go to the gym, the after-effects were painful.
'Just because I was a werewolf doesn't mean I was in great shape,I mean come on, I'm a drug addict.'
I had found a couple more pills hidden in my bags that I hadn't realized I hid, so I was still high but not enough to stop myself from going about my day but I dreaded the future that I knew was coming, I knew I was either going to need to find more or I was going to hit a withdrawal.
Neither of those options sounded fun to me.
Not that I had been looking but I had taken notice of the fact that all the medical cabinets in the house were empty aside from toothpaste and contact solutions.
That the kitchen had not even a Tylenol bottle in sight.
It made me feel gross and a bit angry with the fact they didn't trust me enough to even have simple medications laying out but how could I blame them?
They didn't know me, I was just some drug addict that their Grandson took in to raise and I could only imagine what my parents had warned them about.
I sighed as I looked out the living room window to the long driveway, Darren was hauling his suitcase into the back of the SUV, while Silas spoke to Nani and Miquel.
I wanted to go out there and say goodbye, give them a hug and promise them I would be better the next time they see me but I didn't make promises that I couldn't count on keeping and at this point, I didn't know if I would be able to keep a sober promise or even promise them that I would see them again.
'What was that supposed to mean?'
I pushed the dark thoughts from my mind as I opened the front door.
Silas looked over and gave me a warm smile, something I could always count on him to do.
He had a good habit of making things feel safe, he made me feel like I was wanted and had a purpose when all I felt was dread and hopelessness.
"We're gonna miss you bud," Silas said, hugging me from the shoulder and putting a hand in my dark locks, making a mess of my hair.
"Don't give them too much trouble. I'll call you every night. Promise."
"And if he doesn't, I will," Darren said, giving my head a pat when Silas moved his hand.
I gave my Dads a soft smile, I wanted to do right by them, I didn't want to fuck this up.
I watched their car until it was nothing but dust on the dirt road.
I sigh left my lips as I turned back towards the house.
Preston was giving me the morning but said once he was finished lunch he'd be looking for me.
I looked up at the summer sky... clear not a cloud or bird in the sky.
'Ali, Ali.'
I jumped, blinking for a moment to realize I was alone, my skin crawled for a moment with the phantom voice in my head.
I shook myself turning towards the house pushing myself to get ready for the rest of the day.
"It won't be too much work when Riot gets back. I want you up early tomorrow, help me wake everyone up. I'll show you the morning routine, and after that, you and Riot should be fine to work alone while I go on vacation."
'You're going on vacation?'
"Oh, Yeah, Riot and I take two weeks every year. This year he went to Newfoundland to visit some friends, it's beautiful there this time of year. Once he gets back I get my turn, I'm going on a road trip with a few buddies for mine, one is in Calgary, the other is in Edmonton. We're going to go east for a bit. Normally Miquel would help us out but he had a hip replacement in the winter. So really, you came just in time, how lucky is that?"
'Oh yeah? So lucky,' I signed, knowing he wouldn't understand me.
Preston ran a tanned, dirt soaked hand through his blond mop of curl before turning to me with a smile.
"Maybe tomorrow night we can watch a few movies, I need to clean up tonight. Riot gets back in a few days and if the house is a mess he'll skin me but I could use some company if you're interested. You play DnD?"
Uh, no. no DnD. But I'm down for a movie night.'
"It's settled then, I'll see you in the morning, five on the dot."
Preston dusted off his jeans, getting up from the gator as my eyes widened at the time he gave me.
He just smirked at me, ignoring my increased volume 'Hey' from my cell-phone as he walked away with a wave.
"Stop yelling at me and set that alarm. Night, night Star."

Mr. Eggen: For example, there was no minister responsible for the labour code or occupational health and safety. There was confusion about other responsibilities in this cabinet, which is, I think, one of the biggest in history if not the biggest in history. As one gentleman from the Calgary Sun sort of comically described it, everybody is a VIP in this government, right? Maybe you can take on what I saw FIFA do when they were here in Edmonton and have a VVIP category or have a VVVIP, I suppose, category since everyone seems to have a title over there.
You know, this expansion to 27 ministers, two Deputy Premiers, 11 parliamentary secretaries is unprecedented, and quite frankly it has lent itself to the requirement to have so many miscellaneous statutes amendments so that they could literally retool and reorganize the government. I don’t think it’s a good way to run a cabinet or to run a government, to run a railway, as they say, to do this. Albertans have taken notice that a government that otherwise likes to pride themselves on efficiency and making cuts and tough choices – I mean, a tough choice to make everybody a cabinet minister or something, some version of a VIP, is not really good cricket as far as I’m concerned.

Edmonton’s mayor says the city’s homeless situation has reached a breaking point, so he is seeking to declare an emergency and hold a meeting with other levels of government. Getting those other players to the table could prove challenging, however. Amarjeet Sohi said in a news release Thursday he will call a special meeting of city council on Monday, Jan. 15 where he will motion to declare a housing and homelessness emergency in the city of Edmonton.

"Midway through the strike, the Winnipeg Citizen newspaper published an analysis that neatly summed up the conspiracy theory that conditioned thinking not just about the General Strike but about the Red Scare in its entirety. Taking as its source a series of articles in the New York World, the Citizen announced that, according to “information secured in the inner councils of the Bolsheviki of this continent,” the “Red Five,” the masterminds of the revolutionary movement in Canada, were Winnipeg machinist Dick Johns, William Pritchard and Victor Midgley from Vancouver, Joe Knight from Edmonton, and Joe Naylor from the Vancouver Island mining community of Cumberland. These five men belonged to the inner circle of activists behind the One Big Union, and since the OBU was the Bolshevik conspiracy incarnate, said the Citizen, they comprised the sinister cabal that intended to take advantage of labour struggles such as the Winnipeg strike to overturn the government and replace it with a Red regime. These men had at their disposal “2,500 trained and paid agitators” who knew how “to impress and convert the wage earners,” warned the Citizen, which went on to declare that, “the Bolshevist idea […] has appealed to a greater number of people in the United States and Canada than is generally believed, and the number of supporters is constantly increasing.”
...
Early in the strike the federal government made it clear that it would not remain a neutral observer. Four days after the walkout began, Arthur Meighen, the acting minister of justice, and Minister of Labour Gideon Robertson left Ottawa on a train for Winnipeg to see for themselves what was going on. The government’s attitude was summed up by Meighen, who characterized strike leaders as “revolutionists of various degrees and types, from crazy idealists down to ordinary thieves.” When the two federal cabinet ministers reached Fort William, A.J. Andrews of the Citizens’ Committee of 1,000 was there to greet them. The fifty-four-year-old Andrews would emerge as a key figure in the strike. A lawyer and a former two-term Winnipeg mayor (he was known as “the boy mayor” because of his youthful appearance), he was a well-connected Conservative with a membership in the city’s exclusive social elite.
(Coincidentally, he had run for a seat in the legislature in the 1914 Manitoba election and lost to the labour candidate Fred Dixon, who would be arrested for his role in the strike.)
The Toronto Daily Star called Andrews “the principal human factor opposing the strike movement.” He had been “here there and everywhere” during the strike, the paper said. It was Andrews who would draft Mayor Gray’s ban on street parades; Andrews who met with visiting federal politicians when they came to town; Andrews who corresponded regularly with Arthur Meighen and consulted with him on legislation aimed at the strike leaders; Andrews who decided whether to keep the arrested strike leaders in jail or not. In short, Andrews was Winnipeg’s Wizard of Oz, lurking behind the curtain, manipulating the levers of power.
At the Fort William meeting, Andrews impressed upon Meighen and Robertson that the government had to take a tough stand against the strikers. Both cabinet ministers accepted the view that they were dealing with a sinister plot aimed at overthrowing the government. As the Star reported, the two men “are not preserving neutrality, they are openly opposed” to the strike. A few days later in Winnipeg, Meighen warned that “it is up to the citizens of Winnipeg to stand firm and resist the efforts made here to overturn proper authority.” He had already appointed Andrews the justice department’s special representative on the ground with the assignment of gathering evidence against the strike leadership that would prove they were engaged in a seditious conspiracy. On his return to Ottawa, Meighen—who had refused to meet with any of the strike leaders while he was in Winnipeg —rose to speak in the House of Commons on June 2 and made it clear that his government saw recent events as what he termed “the perfection of Bolshevism.” Meighen argued that by definition a general strike was an insurrection.
A general strike to succeed or, indeed, to continue, must result in the usurpation of governmental authority on the part of those controlling the strike. It did so result in Winnipeg; it must ever so result.
This was the crucial issue, said Meighen, not collective bargaining or some other labour issue, and the government must hold firm. “It was essential that the greater issue raised by the assumption of Soviet authority […] should be once and for all decided and be decisively beaten down …” From the beginning, then, the federal government made it clear that it was committed to the suppression of the strike, not its resolution.
There was an alternative view of the strike articulated in Parliament that day. It was proposed by Ernest LaPointe, the Liberal member for Kamouraska district in Quebec. A lawyer and future justice minister, LaPointe was one of the Laurier loyalists who had remained true to the old leader during the vote over conscription. He was considered to be one of the bright lights of the party in Quebec. He spoke ahead of Meighen, but in response to the comments of the Conservative member for North Winnipeg, Dr M.R. Blake, who had just told the House that “sedition must be stamped out” and that “radical socialist leaders must be interned or deported.” LaPointe argued that the origins of the Winnipeg strike could be found in the high cost of living and the workers’ natural resentment against a system
which allows meat trusts, flour trusts, and other dealers in the necessaries of life to pile up their dividends and multiply their millions while the prices of bread, bacon, meat and other commodities are soaring into altitudes heretofore unknown.
But what was to be done in the short term to establish peace between labour and capital, LaPointe asked? For one thing, “it is useless to mystify the public by acting a Bolshevist melodrama,” he said. These were “wild and stupid accusations.” The labour movement was simply acting on its determination to achieve equal power with the employer; the charges of Bolshevism were “slanderous attacks” on reputable labour leaders. In his view, the government was mishandling the situation and Senator Robertson had ended his usefulness as a mediator by siding so recklessly with one side in the dispute. As for Meighen, he was not temperamentally suited to settling disputes. “He stands in Canada as the Apostle of arbitrary enactments and despotic legislation,” thundered LaPointe, a reference to Meighen’s earlier role in forcing through conscription.
In the end, LaPointe did not have any suggestions to offer as to how the government might settle the Winnipeg dispute, though he did recommend a national conference of employers and employees to discuss the larger issues. Meanwhile, the most he had to offer was the usual vague advice from an Opposition MP: “Do something and do it now.” In precisely two weeks, the government would take this advice, though not in the way that LaPointe would have imagined."
