This colourful renovation of a Parisian apartment space successfully reunites the inhabitants with the rhythms of the day with and interior design scheme that is distincty architectural.
Parisian architect Manuelle Gautrand first private interior project weaves a distinctly feminine thread through the 115m2 duplex apartment in Paris’s Marais district.
The ultimate objective was to maximise the flow of natural light through the space. The walls between rooms were removed and a play of volumes and voids takes full advantage of the windows on the eastern and western facades of a building that predates Haussmanian architecture by 200 years.
It’s a distinctly architectural approach to sculpting interior space. Manuelle Gautrand even drew a corridor of glass in the roof so the suns influence was at constant play throughout the year.
Distinct zones, each with it’s own material qualities make-up the ensemble: from a minimalist zen-like sleeping space under the roof, to a moody wood-panelled entrance.
The living space features a play of colourful relief and volumes that form the staircase and fireplace. An indoor planting cascades down a mezzanine wall underlining the importance of nature and its rhythms.
This is a strong architectural based design scheme aimed at making home in Paris feel more like a sunny vacation.
“We wanted to break from the ideas and images of Bourgeois Parisian apartment, and lean more towards something that is more in the order of a holiday house, like a ‘cabane de plage’, those small but colourful shelters from which one steps out to the sun and sky. We wanted to create something that leaned more towards an artistic statement, and not just a historical one.
We wanted to use colour and we wanted to sculpt the volumes. There is a kind of ambivalence and diversity of ambiences within the project, which I like” says the owner.

California New-Construction Custom Home
This newly-finished custom home is a Modern Farmhouse with a coastal twist. Located in beautiful La Jolla, California, the property overlooks a valley with a serene ocean view. You could say this is a humble home – It’s beautiful on the outside with a classic curbside appeal, but what you don’t realize is that you’re about to walk into a grand foyer with custom wainscoting and a unique hardwood floor pattern. Keep going and it opens up to a completely open living room, dining, & kitchen floor plan with 11′ 6” custom coffered ceilings. The designer wanted every room in this house to have a WOW factor so every detail was treated with care and perfection. To top it all off you will find an organic greenhouse, which really puts this home in another category. But what really made this home was the people behind it. AGK Design Studio (make sure to follow them on Instagram) & The Meter Co. all had the passion to complete it in a timely manner, but also to finish it properly. Efficient teamwork and passion for design is what makes homes like this a showcase.

I don’t think anyone could feel stressed in this kitchen… it has such a happy and bright vibe! I absolutely love the millwork and the functional layout.

The kitchen also features transom windows placed over the cabinetry. This is a brilliant idea, especially if your home is located on a small lot and you have neighbors close by.
Glass Doors
Glass doors were placed only on this cabinet and I am a big fan! Less glass, less time spent cleaning them!
Jokes apart, notice the beautiful door details. Also, placing only white dinneware accentuates the Maple cabinetry.
Living Room Built-in
The kitchen and dining area opens to this stunning living room (soon to be furnished!
) with custom cabinetry. Notice the x inset doors! Cabinetry paint color is the same as the kitchen island; Sherwin Williams Smoky Candle.

Guest Bathroom
I’ll be honest with you… if I had to advise anyone in regards to bathroom and kitchen design, I would always say to stay neutral and classic. These are the two most expensive rooms to renovate and when you keep things classic like we see here, chances are that you will never get tired of it nor feel as if it looks outdated just after a few years. This bathroom is beautiful and current but it doesn’t scream any trend and that’s how a well-designed space should be.

Among the 22 architectural projects selected from the call for innovative urban projects launched by the City of Paris, ‘reinventer Paris 1’, Our Edison Lite project proposed a new housing model, based on three main principles that Manuelle Gautrand Architecture established: – The creation of ‘made-to-measure’ housing units, whereby the future residents were able to participate in establishing the brief as well as the design of their home; – The provision of 20% extra surface area, defined and shared with the residents: this provides access to space and facilities that would not otherwise be available to individual residents; – To welcome residents into an existing landscape: largely planted during works, the architectural project includes 75 m3 of soil, divided between 290 planters and a large, 150 sqm allotment on the roof.
Space Shared By ResidentsEdison Lite These communal spaces were designed as a route, accompanying the residents and providing them with meeting places from the basement level right up to the roof. This provides them with areas and functions that they would not individually have been able to create. – In the lower section of this route, at level -1, is a large workshop for residents’ use, close to their basement storage; on the ground floor is a secure bicycle storage area, accessed from the large shared entrance hall. – On level 6 is a huge area comprising a south-facing sun deck and a west-facing open-air communal barbecue kitchen facility. – Above, on level 7, is the 150 sqm allotment, which crowns the project with 360-degree views.
Close To Nature Abundant planting in the communal spaces continues into the private spaces, constituting another major undertaking of the project. Situated on a narrow plot surrounded by buildings, some imposing, Manuelle Gautrand designed facades that were both largely glazed but also largely planted, in order to create a kind of filter to mask direct views.
Thus 290 large planters punctuate the windows of the facade, with an average of 14 planters per unit, which, along with the shared allotment, equates to 10 m2 of soil per apartment!
The planters have been planted with 310 passionflower plants, which ‘belong’ to the collective, along with 4,320 bulbs and 1,418 rushes (Luzula) in the residents’ private planters.
More than 6,000 plants were thereby planted before the residents’ arrival, ensuring the established planted landscape that we see today.
The 150 m2 allotment is thereby divided up so that each resident has their own plot, in which they can plan and plant a vegetable patch.
‘made-to-measure’ Housing Edison Lite is first and foremost a building of ‘made-to-measure’ housing, that is to say co-designed with its future residents.
Residents were selected from a great number of applications, organised and managed by the HABX platform. Once the residents had been selected, Manuelle Gautrand worked with them initially to orientate them in choosing the position of their unit within the building, and then to guide them in the interior fit-out of their apartment.
