Food Bank Appeal | Edhi Foundation: A Lifeline for Families in Need
In today’s world, food insecurity remains a harsh reality for millions, including families and individuals in the UK. As living costs rise and the demand for basic necessities grows, many people struggle to make ends meet, and food has become an item they can’t always afford. In response to this urgent need, the Edhi Foundation has stepped up with its Food Bank Appeal initiative, a lifeline for those facing food shortages and hunger.
This blog delves into the mission of the Edhi Foundation in launching the Food Bank Appeal, the impact it aims to achieve, and how each of us can contribute to making a difference in the lives of those affected by food poverty in the UK.
The Urgent Need for Food Banks in the UK:
Across the UK, food banks have become essential services, helping individuals and families who might otherwise go without food. Statistics indicate that over two million people in the UK rely on food banks, with many more needing occasional assistance due to circumstances like unemployment, illness, or simply rising living expenses. The Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal is designed to provide support to these communities by offering accessible and nutritious food supplies for those in dire need.
Rising inflation and an unpredictable economy have affected countless families, often forcing them to choose between paying rent, covering bills, and buying food. For individuals facing such tough decisions, food banks are a place of hope and survival. The Food Bank Appeal by the Edhi Foundation is a proactive measure to ensure that vulnerable communities have access to the basic necessity of food. It represents compassion, empathy, and the spirit of community, helping to ease the burden for families during these challenging times.
The Vision Behind the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal:
The Edhi Foundation has a long-standing reputation for humanitarian services, focusing on the welfare of the underprivileged and vulnerable. The Food Bank Appeal is an extension of this mission, targeting food poverty and hunger in the UK. The foundation believes that everyone has the right to live with dignity, and access to food is a fundamental part of this dignity.
Through the Food Bank Appeal, the Edhi Foundation not only aims to distribute food but also seeks to provide nutritious and balanced supplies that can sustain health and well-being. The initiative takes into account the specific needs of various communities, including families, elderly people, and individuals with dietary restrictions, ensuring that everyone who approaches the food bank receives the type of assistance they genuinely need.
The Impact of the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal:
With every donation and volunteer effort, the Food Bank Appeal by the Edhi Foundation continues to expand its reach. Every contribution plays a role in lifting the weight off the shoulders of struggling families and individuals. For a single mother trying to provide for her children, an elderly person living alone, or a young family facing temporary financial setbacks, the food bank can be the bridge that helps them get through the hardest days.
By helping these individuals meet their basic needs, the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal is actively working to reduce food insecurity and empower people to focus on other essential aspects of their lives, like finding stable employment or caring for their health. Knowing they won’t have to worry about their next meal can give recipients a sense of stability and peace that allows them to plan for a better future.
The Lifeline of Donors and Volunteers:
The success of the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal largely depends on the generosity of donors and the dedication of volunteers. For the food bank to continue meeting the growing demand, it requires the support of individuals, communities, and businesses willing to donate food items, financial resources, and their time.
How You Can Make a Difference:
Food Donations: Donors can contribute by donating essential items, including canned foods, grains, pasta, and hygiene items, which are often in high demand. Nutritious options such as whole grains, canned vegetables, and protein-rich foods are always welcomed to ensure recipients receive a balanced diet.
Financial Support: Donations allow the Edhi Foundation to purchase fresh food supplies and maintain the food bank. With financial contributions, the foundation can keep shelves stocked and cater to a more extensive network of individuals needing assistance.
Volunteering Time: Volunteers are the backbone of the Food Bank Appeal. From sorting and packing food items to distributing them to families, volunteers play a hands-on role in ensuring that the food bank runs smoothly. For those who may not be able to donate monetarily, offering time can be just as valuable and rewarding.
Addressing Food Poverty with a Human Touch:
The Edhi Foundation is known for its compassionate approach to charity. The Food Bank Appeal is managed in a way that maintains the dignity of its beneficiaries. Every individual who visits the food bank is treated with respect, and the assistance they receive is free from judgment or prejudice. The foundation upholds an environment where people feel safe and supported, knowing that they can turn to the food bank without fear of stigma or shame.
This human-centered approach is at the heart of the Edhi Foundation and its Food Bank Appeal. By prioritizing empathy and understanding, the foundation creates a welcoming space where people in need can find comfort, knowing they are part of a community that cares about their well-being.
Building Resilience in Communities Through the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal:
The Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal is about more than just providing food; it’s about building resilience in communities across the UK. By helping families meet their nutritional needs, the food bank reduces some of the immediate stress they face and allows them to channel their energy into overcoming other challenges. In doing so, the foundation not only supports individuals but also strengthens communities.
Over time, this initiative creates a ripple effect, as individuals who receive support are better equipped to contribute positively to society. Whether it’s a young student who can focus better in school or a parent who can provide for their family without feeling overwhelmed, the food bank’s support plays a pivotal role in fostering a more stable and resilient community.
Stories of Hope from the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal:
The impact of the Food Bank Appeal can be felt in the heartfelt stories of those it helps. A single father, recently laid off from work, shared how receiving weekly groceries from the food bank allowed him to keep food on the table while he searched for employment. Another elderly woman, living on a limited pension, spoke about how the food bank provided her with fresh vegetables and staples, giving her the nutrients she needed to stay healthy.
These stories are a testament to the power of community and the essential role that the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal plays in changing lives for the better.
How You Can Support the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal:
Supporting the Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal doesn’t require a grand gesture. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference. Here are some ways you can help:
Regular Donations: Set up monthly donations to provide ongoing support.
Organize a Food Drive: Involve your community, school, or workplace in collecting food items.
Spread the Word: Raise awareness about the Food Bank Appeal on social media and in your network.
Join Fundraising Events: Participate in fundraising activities to support the Edhi Foundation.
By joining hands with the Edhi Foundation in this noble cause, we can help create a society where no one has to worry about where their next meal will come from.
Edhi Foundation Appeal:
The Edhi Foundation’s Food Bank Appeal is more than a campaign; it’s a movement of empathy, compassion, and hope. Through this initiative, the Edhi Foundation is determined to address food insecurity in the UK and ensure that everyone has access to the nourishment they need. Each contribution brings the foundation one step closer to achieving this vision.
With your support, the Edhi Foundation can continue to make a significant impact, bringing food to tables and hope to hearts across the UK. Let’s stand together in the fight against hunger by supporting the Food Bank Appeal and make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Why arrest fisherfolk who cross an invisible maritime boundary, then hold them for years across the border?
After yet another Indian fisherman died in custody in Pakistan, I asked my friend Jatin Desai in Mumbai to write for Sapan News syndicated features about the issue. We ended up doing it together, calling on the authorities to take action. Pls share widely
Last month, another Indian fisherman incarcerated in Pakistan died while waiting to be repatriated. A young man in his thirties. Why he was held in the first place makes no sense to me, and to a lot of other people. India and Pakistan routinely detain each others fisherfolk. In doing so, they defy international law, deny the incarcerated men consular access in violation of their own laws, hold…

By 1965, the PKI had three million party members – adding a million members in the year. It had emerged as a serious political force in Indonesia, despite the anti-communist military’s attempts to squelch its growth. Membership in its mass organizations went up to 18 million. A strange incident – the killing of three generals in Jakarta – set off a massive campaign, helped along by the CIA and Australian intelligence, to excise the communists from Indonesia. Mass murder was the order of the day. The worst killings were in East Java and in Bali. Colonel Sarwo Edhie’s forces, for instance, trained militia squads to kill communists. ‘We gave them two or three days’ training,’ Sarwo Edhie told journalist John Hughes, ‘then sent them out to kill the communists.’ In East Java, one eyewitness recounted, the prisoners were forced to dig a grave, then ‘one by one, they were beaten with bamboo clubs, their throats slit, and they were pushed into the mass grave’. By the end of the massacre, a million Indonesian men and women of the left were sent to these graves. Many millions more were isolated, without work and friends. Aidit was arrested by Colonel Yasir Hadibroto, brought to Boyolali (in Central Java) and executed. He was 42. There was no way for the world communist movement to protect their Indonesian comrades. The USSR’s reaction was tepid. The Chinese called it a ‘heinous and diabolical’ crime. But neither the USSR nor China could do anything. The United Nations stayed silent. The PKI had decided to take a path that was without the guns. Its cadre could not defend themselves. They were not able to fight the military and the anti-communist gangs. It was a bloodbath.
Red Star Over the Third World Vijay Prashad, November 2017
The fourth way that anticommunist extermination programs shaped the world is that they deformed the world socialist movement. Many of the global left-wing groups that did survive the twentieth century decided that they had to employ violence and jealously guard power or face annihilation. When they saw the mass murders taking place in these countries, it changed them. Maybe US citizens weren’t paying close attention to what happened in Guatemala, or Indonesia. But other leftists around the world definitely were watching. When the world’s largest Communist Party without an army or dictatorial control of a country was massacred, one by one, with no consequences for the murderers, many people around the world drew lessons from this, with serious consequences. This was another very difficult question I had to ask my interview subjects, especially the leftists from Southeast Asia and Latin America. When we would get to discussing the old debates between peaceful and armed revolution; between hardline Marxism and democratic socialism, I would ask: “Who was right?” In Guatemala, was it Árbenz or Che who had the right approach? Or in Indonesia, when Mao warned Aidit that the PKI should arm themselves, and they did not? In Chile, was it the young revolutionaries in the MIR who were right in those college debates, or the more disciplined, moderate Chilean Communist Party? Most of the people I spoke with who were politically involved back then believed fervently in a nonviolent approach, in gradual, peaceful, democratic change. They often had no love for the systems set up by people like Mao. But they knew that their side had lost the debate, because so many of their friends were dead. They often admitted, without hesitation or pleasure, that the hardliners had been right. Aidit’s unarmed party didn’t survive. Allende’s democratic socialism was not allowed, regardless of the détente between the Soviets and Washington. Looking at it this way, the major losers of the twentieth century were those who believed too sincerely in the existence a liberal international order, those who trusted too much in democracy, or too much in what the United States said it supported, rather than what it really supported—what the rich countries said, rather than what they did. That group was annihilated.

Greetings from Nottingham!
Had a few Collapse Days(tm) this past week but made good progress nonetheless. I should be fully done writing Will Chapter 2 tomorrow or Thursday.
As for the rest of the team, Lawri is finishing up the new Alvin sexy silhouette, Arrapso is completing some miscellaneous sprite bits I need to start coding Will's route, and I'm commissioning Sandra to complete two additional BGs I'll need for this route. Edhie is working on comments for the completed scenes so I'll be able to start coding Chapters 1-2 while I write Chapters 3-4.
As with Robin's route, Chapters 3-4 will take me significantly less time to write than Chapters 1-2.

The History of Charity Organizations in Pakistan: A Timeline
Charity organizations have been a cornerstone of Pakistan's social welfare system, contributing significantly to the country's development. From the early years post-independence to the modern era, these organizations have addressed critical needs and fostered community growth. This article provides a detailed timeline of the evolution of charity organizations in Pakistan, highlighting their contributions and impact.
1947-1960: The Birth of a Nation and Early Philanthropic Efforts
Post-Independence Relief Efforts
The partition of India in 1947 resulted in mass migrations, violence, and displacement, necessitating immediate relief efforts. In response, several charity organizations were established to provide essential services. The All Pakistan Women's Association (APWA), founded in 1949 by Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan, was among the first to focus on women and children's welfare. APWA provided critical healthcare, education, and vocational training to women affected by the partition.
Establishment of the Edhi Foundation
In 1951, Abdul Sattar Edhi founded the Edhi Foundation, starting with a small dispensary. Over time, it grew into Pakistan's largest charity organization, offering a wide range of services, including ambulances, orphanages, and shelters for the homeless. The Edhi Foundation became a symbol of selfless service, setting a standard for future philanthropic endeavors in Pakistan.
1960-1980: Expansion and Institutionalization of Charity Work
Growth of Health and Education Initiatives
The 1960s and 1970s saw significant growth in charity work, with a focus on health and education. The Aga Khan Foundation, established in 1967, played a vital role in improving healthcare and education across Pakistan. The foundation's initiatives in rural development and healthcare set a precedent for structured and institutionalized philanthropy.
The Role of Religious Organizations
During this period, religious organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami and Tableeghi Jamaat expanded their charitable activities, especially in rural areas. These organizations established schools, clinics, and vocational centers, extending the reach of charity work throughout the country.
Launch of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust
In 1985, Imran Khan launched the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust in memory of his mother. The trust focused on providing free cancer treatment to the underprivileged, culminating in the establishment of Pakistan's first cancer hospital in Lahore in 1994. This initiative marked a major milestone in healthcare philanthropy in Pakistan.
1980-2000: A Period of Consolidation and Growth
Zakat and the Role of Government
The 1980s brought the Zakat Ordinance, introduced under General Zia-ul-Haq, which mandated Zakat deductions from savings accounts to support the poor and needy. While this system aimed to institutionalize charity, it sparked debates about the efficiency of state-controlled charity versus independent organizations.
Formation of the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy
In 2001, the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP) was established to enhance the effectiveness of philanthropy in the country. The PCP focused on capacity building for non-profit organizations, promoting transparency, and fostering corporate philanthropy as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The Role of International NGOs
During this time, international NGOs such as Save the Children, CARE International, and Oxfam became increasingly active in Pakistan. These organizations worked on disaster relief, education, and women's rights, contributing significantly to the growth of the charity sector in Pakistan.
Present: The Modern Era of Charity and Philanthropy
Shifa Foundation's Contribution to Health and Social Services
Shifa Foundation has been a leading force in Pakistan's humanitarian landscape for over three decades. With a focus on healthcare, environmental initiatives, water and sanitation projects, disaster response, and educational volunteer programs, Shifa Foundation has positively impacted the lives of over 8 million people across Pakistan. Their work in providing essential services has been instrumental in improving the quality of life for countless individuals.
Rise of Technology-Driven Philanthropy
The internet and social media have transformed charity organizations in Pakistan. Platforms like Aurat Foundation, Saylani Welfare International Trust, and Akhuwat use technology to reach broader audiences and raise funds efficiently. Online donations, crowdfunding, and social media campaigns have increased donations and volunteer participation.
Impact of Natural Disasters
Natural disasters such as the 2005 earthquake and the 2010 floods underscored the importance of charity organizations in disaster response and recovery. The Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Al-Khidmat Foundation, and Edhi Foundation played critical roles in providing relief and rehabilitation to affected communities.
Focus on Sustainable Development
In recent years, there has been a growing focus on sustainable development in the charity sector. Organizations like the Citizen's Foundation (TCF), which operates a vast network of schools for underprivileged children, are leading the way in providing long-term solutions to poverty, education, and healthcare.
The Future of Charity Organizations in Pakistan
The future of charity organizations in Pakistan is bright, with increasing emphasis on innovation, transparency, and collaboration. As the sector evolves, partnerships between the government, private sector, and non-profits will be crucial in addressing the country's challenges. The use of technology and a focus on sustainable development will continue to drive the impact of charity organizations.

Serving the unseen, The Edhi Foundation by David Verberckt
I have had the privilege to follow some of the social services that the Edhi Foundation is providing in Karachi. In particular in their homes for the abandoned and homeless, elderly and children, mental health patients, and a rehabilitation center for heroine addicts.
Edhi Foundation is a large organizational set-up running a wide range of social services in Pakistan by guiding and supporting the most deprived through hardships of life. One of the services that make the Foundation unique among all other social welfare service providers, is its dedication in providing free shelter and care for mental health patients, destitute, drug addicts, orphans and abandoned children in the highly neglected areas.
It’s estimated that there are several hundred thousands of drug addicts in Karachi, Pakistan’s economical and shipping hub. Despite being illegal, a dose of heroin is easily available, affordable and often cheaper than a meal. The opium from which the heroin is made is grown in neighbouring Afghanistan along the border areas.
The Edhi Foundation offers addicts a free rehabilitation at their centre in Karachi. Treatment is basic and consists of providing a drug-free environment. Only sedative injections and paracetamol are available for pain relief, methadone is rarely available and unaffordable. This cure is called “Cold Turkey” and consists of abruptly taking away a drug to which one is addicted, provoking severe pain, anxiety and mental distress. Although the patient will end the physical need for heroin after 7-10 days, it does not stop the psychological dependence. Many patients that leave the centre will unfortunately be brought back at a later stage, other will develop severe mental illnesses.
The Edhi Foundation does a remarkable job in providing support through their homes to the most vulnerable with very limited resources. Unfortunately the needs are so immense in terms of mental health care and addiction rehabilitation that larger multi-disciplinary involvement is essential.
