Southern Netherlandish School - A Vanitas with a skull in a niche, an interior in the background (c. 1530)
“This intriguing picture had long been attributed to Cornelis Engelbrechtsz., until it was recently recognized by Prof. Dr. Jan Piet Filedt Kok, formerly of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, to be a work by a Southern Netherlandish. Both he and Dr. John Oliver Hand, of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, have pointed out that the painted skull would originally have comprised part of a folding diptych as the outside cover of one wing (see also Hélène Vergoustraete, 'Diptychs with instructions for use', in J.O. Hand and R. Spronk, eds., Essays in Context: Unfolding the Netherlandisch Diptych, Cambridge, New Haven and London, 2006, pp. 156-171).
One of the earliest examples of a skull being depicted on the outside cover of a diptych is found in theoeuvre of Hans Memling - a skull in a niche can be seen on the verso of a depiction of Saint John the Baptist in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, which used to form a private diptych altar together with an image of Saint Veronica, now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (see Hand, Spronk and C. Metzger, eds.,Prayers and Portraits: Unfolding the Netherlandish Diptych, Cambridge, New Haven and London, 2006, pp. 170-7, no. 25). Jan Provoost painted a similar skull on the outside cover of a diptych with 'Christ carrying the Cross and A portrait of a fifty-four-year-old Franciscan', now in the Sint-Jan-Hospitaalmuseum, Bruges (seePrayers and Portraits, op. cit., pp. 210-7, cat. 31). While both Memling and Provoost depict their skulls in a feigned niche, the present lot appears to be an unprecedented iconographic novelty, with a detailed and delicately-painted view of an interior behind the main subject.” - Christies

The Spider House AU
This is a Hatchetfield x The Owl House AU and honestly it kind of slays
After an incident in Shop class, Lex Foster decides to shell out the pitiful amount of savings she has left to get her younger sister, Hannah, some professional help, at the suggestion of the cast.
Hannah winds up entering the demon realm and meeting Miss Holloway, the Spider Lady, the last wild witch in the realm, and her roommates, Wiggly, the sentient house demon and Webby, the amnesiac queen of demons.
Hannah makes friends with witches Pete Spankoffski and Daniel, and initially forms a rivalry with Sophia Coven, the daughter of the CEO of the biggest corporation in the demon realm, before befriending her.
Then the truth is revealed. Miss Holloway is cursed to turn into some sort of spider beast.
We also meet Miss Holloway’s brother, Wilbur, the leader of the Emperor’s coven, who wishes to recruit his wayward sister.
Turns out the Emperor is not what he seems, he is a mortal man named Bob Metzger, who along with his sister many centuries ago, came across the Demon realm as witch hunters, and after his sister fell in love with a witch, he turned on them all, using the help of Bliklotep, the Collector.
Eventually, Hannah, Lex and the friends they’ve made along the way face off against the true evil in the demon realm.

Then the Lord God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner."
Genesis 2.18
To be fully human one needs to be in relation to others who correspond to oneself. Helper, not in a relationship of subordination but of mutuality and interdependence.

Robert Clary (born Robert Max Widerman; March 1, 1926 – November 16, 2022) was a French–born American actor. He is best known for his role in the television sitcom Hogan's Heroes as Corporal Louis LeBeau (1965 to 1971). He also had recurring roles in the soap operas The Bold and the Beautiful (1990 to 1992), and Days of Our Lives (1972 to 1987).
During World War II he was sent to Buchenwald concentration camp. He was liberated from Buchenwald on April 11, 1945.
After the war Clary returned to the entertainment business and began singing songs that not only became popular in France, but in the United States as well. Clary made his first recordings in 1948; they were brought to the United States on wire and were issued on disk by Capitol Records. He went to the U.S. in October 1949. One of Clary's first American appearances was a French-language comedy skit on The Ed Wynn Show in 1950. Clary later met Merv Griffin and Eddie Cantor. This eventually led to Clary meeting Cantor's daughter, Natalie Cantor Metzger, whom he married in 1965, after being "the closest of friends" for 15 years. Cantor later got Clary a spot on The Colgate Comedy Hour. In the mid-1950s, Clary appeared on NBC's early sitcom The Martha Raye Show and on CBS's drama anthology series Appointment with Adventure.
Clary's comedic skills were quickly recognized by Broadway, where he appeared in several popular musicals, including New Faces of 1952, which was produced as a film in 1954.In 1952, he appeared in the film Thief of Damascus which also starred Paul Henreid and Lon Chaney, Jr. In 1958, he guest-starred on The Gisele MacKenzie Show (NBC). He guest-starred on The Munsters Today (1989) as Louis Schecter, Lily's acting coach, in the episode "Green Eyed Munsters".
After Hogan's Heroes was cancelled in 1971, Clary maintained close ties to fellow Hogan's Heroes cast members Werner Klemperer, John Banner, and Leon Askin, whose lives were also affected by the Holocaust. Following the show's cancellation, he appeared in a handful of feature films with World War II themes, including the made-for-television film Remembrance of Love, about the Holocaust. Clary also appeared on the soap operas Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful.
Clary was the last surviving original cast member of Hogan’s Heroes (Wikipedia)

gonna start a proper list of hatchetfield characters who canonically avert the one steve limit trope. i am not counting douglas "duke" keane + mariah's cop character bc the character's appearance in jane's a car just refers to her as "officer" in the script.
john macnamara and johnathan brisby (variant on the same name, it counts, shut up)
beth (that nerdy girl character that angela plays) from watcher world, and beth (rose's mother) from killer track
pete spankoffski and the unseen pete who sold pizza pete's to eddie chiplucky
speaking of, eddie chiplucky and peanuts' proud papa ed (again, variation on the same name)
bob morris (the vice president from black friday) and bob metzger
dan reynolds and daniel from yellow jacket. i am not counting joey's smoke club character from tgwdlm in this bc he's never been canonically referred to as "danny" by another character. same reason i'm not counting sophia from yellow jacket and "sof".
if we wanna stretch things- which i kinda don't but i feel like someone's gonna mention it if i don't, there's workin' boys steve and the unseen steve that corey's unnamed hatchetfield gazette character calls for in time bastard

Okay so. I don’t know how many ED people have enough energy to read. (It’s me. Reading makes my brain go brr.) Anyways.
The book is called A Trick Of The Light by Lois Metzger.
I don’t even know how this book came into my possession. But as a cis-male with an ED; I feel like this book is super important. It talks about a lot of things the media doesn’t talk about with men with EDs. Like symptoms, how it starts, etc.
I was so out of it when I first devolved my ED I didn’t even realise I had it until after I read this book. It’s a very sad/depressing read (at least it was to me.) But it’s also very informative and accurate.
Disclaimer: This book could potentially be very triggering. If you want to read this book to trigger yourself; I’m not your therapist but please stay safe.
It’s available on Amazon for less than $15.

One must pay attention not only to what is said, but also by whom it is said, to whom it is said, at what time, under what circumstances, what precedes, and what follows. There is the thoughtless habit of quoting all parts of the Bible as of equal value, whether they are the words of the Lord or the words of Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite in the book of Job, who are afterwards represented as condemned and contradicted by God. In other words, not everything contained in the Bible is affirmed by the Bible.

Hey, thanks for introducing me to so many queer lit! I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for, I'm trans masc and it just dawned on me that I've read so little about like... Trans pleasure? I've come across a very few sex ed type things and a few books where it kinda happens in the background. I'm not necessarily looking for erotica, essays, poetry, fiction, just anything that engaging with trans bodies and sex. I know there's plenty out there, but it's so hard to search for I keep getting porn and transphpbic articals about our genitals.
<3 Can definitely help with that! Try Reverb by Anna Zabo, Long Macchiatos and Monsters by Alison Evans, Starting From Scratch by Jay Northcote, Their Troublesome Crush by Xan West, What it Looks Like by Matthew J. Metzger, and Slow Moves by Elliott Junkyard, for a few to start with - they all have transmasculine main characters or love interests.

it’s three am and I should I be asleep but today is the ten year anniversary of Ninjago and I’m just... so so so happy and full of genuine joy. Ninjago is the reason I joined tumblr (even if I’m more atla now, I will always be Ninjago at my core), Ninjago is the reason I began to write as much as I do now, Ninjago helped me realize third person was my writing strong suite. Ninjago is... so much to me. I was there in 2011 when it started and I remember all of the raw emotions I felt watching the show.
Finding out Lloyd was the green ninja. The ninja getting younger and Lloyd growing older. Crying at the season two finale when Lloyd broke his leg and the rest of his team got hit and turned evil. I remember being devestated when Zane died. And being so happy when he came back. I vividly remember being in the car to Dairy Queen when I was in eighth grade when I first found out Cole became a ghost and I remember watching season five in other languages on YouTube just to see what happened.
I remember sitting on my bed crying over The Last Resort. I remember the fandom screaming when Maya and Ray entered the picture and when Lloyd said “Twins look alike”. I remember everyone guessing who Samurai X would be and who the baby was. I remember episode 92 of Ninjago when Harumi died and I remember saying “the resistance never quits” and feeling such power and confidence in myself. I remember crying when Cole fell— not just because he’s my favorite character, but also because Ninjago handled that scene so well. I remember learning the scene when Lloyd finds out Cole fell in asl and rewatching that scene at least twenty times a day. I remember telling my math teacher that episode 98 of Ninjago would be live-streamed during her class (senior year of high school) and that I had to watch it because I have been so mentally distraught about the fall all week and her kids loved the show too so she let me and I actually cried in class when Lloyd “died”.
I remember learning about Ninjago anime through tumblr. I remember screeching when Cole had the nightmares about falling and when Zane was the Ice Emperor. I remember getting so excited when I found out Scott and FugiDove were voiced by Adrian Petriw and that Cole fell once more. I remember season thirteen coming out and crying again because Cole finally has a season and it was so freaking good. I remember learning that Kirby Morrow died on November 19th, 2020.
I remember a family. I remember a passion. I remember the home I never felt like I had. I remember the true potential episodes. “I know who I am”, “you are the best you”, “I’m proud of who I am and I want you to be proud too”, “I knew when I had to make a choice”. I remember “we are so hooped”.
I remember love and heartbreak, tears and joy. I remember that the best way to defeat your enemy is to make them your friend. I remember bequeath. I remember “this isn’t about numbers, it’s about family!”. I remember Jay essentially telling Cole that his feelings for him are stronger than his feelings for his girlfriend. I remember “Chen can try his best to split up our team, but he’s about to find out what happens when we put ourselves back together”. I remember that as iron sharpens iron, brother sharpens brother. I will always remember the iconic “that was anticlimactic” from Kai.
I remember “save me, Jay Walker. There’s gonna be a wedding and I want you to do something about it”. I remember that if you want soenhnjng bad enough, you find a way to make it happen. I remember Day of the Departed and how kind Cole was to Yang, how he regained his mortality and was left with his scar. I remember Cole’s relationship with Wu, how close of a bond they had. I remember getting literal chills from Britt McKillip singing “spider’s in the house, sleep, sleep. Spider bit the mouse, sleep deep. Don’t wake up or else you’ll find a spider in your mouth”. I remember laughing so hard when Cole was singing as Rock Dangerbuff. I remember Jay going mad in the realm of Oni and Dragon. I remember seeing the bones of the Ultra Dragon. I remember being so excited to see the elemental masters (and Darreth) again. I remember “there’s more to life than surviving!”.
I remember being so happy to learn that s11-13 were going to happen. I remember Vex and Akita, Unagami and Scott, The Skull Sorcerer and Vania (the Geckles and Munce). I remember Lilly. I remember.
I remember Ninjago, a show that means more to me than I can fit into words. I remember a silly television show that changed my entire life. I remember characters who brought me joy when no one else could.
So I thank Cole, Kai, Jay, Zane, Lloyd, Nya, Pixal, Skylor, Garmadon, Wu (sometimes— if he’s not hiding stuff😂), Misako, Darreth, Ronin, Pythor, the other Elemental Masters, Cyrus Borg, Dr. Julien, Lou, Ray and Maya, Ed and Edna (I love them), Morro, Harumi, The Overlord, Mystake, Faith, and so many other characters.
Thank you, Kirby Morrow, Vincent Tong, Brent Miller, Michael Adamthwaite, Kelly Metzger, Jillian Michaels, Sam Vincent, Paul / Michael / Brian Dobson, Mark Oliver, Kathleen Barr, Jennifer Hayward, Heather Doerksen, Alan Marriott, Andrew Francis, Ian James Corlett, Britt McKillip, Scott McNeil, Tabitha St Germain, Lee Tockar, and so so so many others.
To Dan and Kevin Hageman, Tommy Andreasen, The Fold: thank you so much.

A sigil (/ˈsɪdʒəl/; pl. sigilla or sigils) is a type of symbol used in ritual magic. The term has usually referred to a type of pictorial signature of a Jinn or other entity. In modern usage, especially in the context of chaos magic, sigil refers to a symbolic representation of the practitioner's desired outcome.
History(edit)
72 seals from the Lesser Key of Solomon
The term sigil derives from the Latinsigillum, meaning 'seal'.(1)Skype.
In medieval ceremonial magic, the term sigil was commonly used to refer to occult signs which represented various angels and demons which the witch might summon.(1) The magical training books called grimoires often listed pages of such sigils. A particularly well-known list is in The Lesser Key of Solomon, in which the sigils of the 72 princes of the hierarchy of hell are given for the magician's use. Such sigils were considered to be the equivalent of the true name of the spirit and thus granted the magician a measure of control over the beings.(2)
An excerpt from Sefer Raziel HaMalakh featuring various magical sigils (or סגולות, segulot, in Hebrew).
A common method of creating the sigils of certain spirits was to use kameas (magic squares) — the names of the spirits were converted to numbers, which were then located on the magic square. The locations were then connected by lines, forming an abstract figure.(3)
The word sigil.. has a long history in Western magic. The members of the Golden Dawn were perfectly familiar with it (″combining the letters, the colours, the attributions and their Synthesis, thou mayest build up a telesmatic Image of a Force. The Sigil shall then serve thee for the tracing of a Current which shall call into action a certain Elemental Force″) and it was used in the making of talismans. The sigil was like a signature or sign of an occult entity.(4)
Satanachia Sigil
Tumblr media
The use of symbols for magical or cultic purposes has been widespread since at least the Neolithic era. Some examples from other cultures include the yantra from Hindutantra, historical runic magic among the Germanic peoples, or the use of veves in Voudon.
Austin Osman Spare(edit)
Satanachia Sigil
The artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare developed his own unique method of creating and using sigils, which has had a huge effect on modern occultism. Essentially, Spare turned the Medieval practice of using sigils to evoke entities on its head, arguing that such supernatural beings were simply complexes in the unconscious, and could be actively created through the process of sigilization.(5)(4)
The big difference with Spare's method was that he dispensed with pre-existing esoterica and external beliefs, so the sigils were no longer for controlling traditional demons, angels and what-have-you, but instead for controlling forces in the unconscious psyche of the individual operator.(4)
Spare's technique became a cornerstone of chaos magic.(6) It also influenced the artist Brion Gysin, who experimented with combining Spare's sigil method with the traditional form of magic squares:
Calligraphic magick squares were one of the techniques most commonly applied by Gysin. He would reduce a name or an idea to a 'glyph' and then write across the paper from right to left, turn the paper and do the same again, and so on, turning the paper around and around to create a multi-dimensional grid.. The same techniques and consciously driven functional intention also permeated his paintings. In a very real sense, everything he created was an act of sorcery.(7) Home alone 3 on amazon prime.

Chaos magic(edit)
A modern personal sigil.
In chaos magic, following Spare, sigils are most commonly created by writing out the intention, then condensing the letters of the statement down to form a sort of monogram. The chaos magician then uses the gnostic state to 'launch' or 'charge' the sigil – essentially bypassing the conscious mind to implant the desire in the unconscious.(8)(6) To quote Ray Sherwin:
The magician acknowledges a desire, he lists the appropriate symbols and arranges them into an easily visualised glyph. Using any of the gnostic techniques he reifies the sigil and then, by force of will, hurls it into his subconscious from where the sigil can begin to work unencumbered by desire.(8)
After charging the sigil, it is considered necessary to repress all memory of it: in the words of Spare, there should be 'a deliberate striving to forget it'.(5)
Grimorium verum sigils. In modern chaos magic, when a complex of thoughts, desires and intentions gains such a level of sophistication that it appears to operate autonomously from the magician's consciousness, as if it were an independent being, then such a complex is referred to as a servitor.(9)(10) When such a being becomes large enough that it exists independently of any one individual, as a form of 'group mind', then it is referred to as an egregore.(11)(12)
Later chaos magicians have expanded on the basic sigilization technique. Grant Morrison coined the term hypersigil to refer to an extended work of art with magical meaning and willpower, created using adapted processes of sigilization. His comic book series The Invisibles was intended as such a hypersigil.(6) Morrison has also argued that modern corporate logos like 'the McDonald's Golden Arches, the Nike swoosh and the Virgin autograph' are a form of viral sigil:
Corporate sigils are super-breeders. They attack unbranded imaginative space. They invade Red Square, they infest the cranky streets of Tibet, they etch themselves into hairstyles. They breed across clothing, turning people into advertising hoardings.. The logo or brand, like any sigil, is a condensation, a compressed, symbolic summoning up of the world of desire which the corporation intends to represent.. Walt Disney died long ago but his sigil, that familiar, cartoonish signature, persists, carrying its own vast weight of meanings, associations, nostalgia and significance.(6)
