Massive US under-employment...

Note that in the US if an individual works ONLY ONE HOUR A WEEK,  that person is officially considered employed!  “Employed person: US term for an individual 16 years old or older who,  in a given week, (a) works minimum one hour for an emolument or minimum 15 hours of unpaid work in a family business» (businessdictionary.com). In fact, in a few cases (in a family business) one may not even get paid and still be “employed”!

“According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of the total U.S. adult population that has a full-time job has been hovering around 48% since 2010” (EconomicCollapseBlog, Sept 22, 2016).  “In line with the definition of the BLS, part-time workers are persons who usually work less than 35 hours per week. In November 2016, about 28.42 million people were employed on a part-time basis.” (The Statistics Portal)

“Experts call part-time jobs "hidden unemployment" because these people are capable of working more hours than they can get...  Many part-timers are paid less per hour than full-time workers with the same responsibility and job. They're more likely to lose their jobs than full-time workers and they often have no health benefits or paid time off...” (CNN Money, April 25, 2016).

“America is shifting from a traditional work force, one where the majority of new employment is retained on a full-time basis, to a "gig" economy, where workers are severely disenfranchised, and enjoy far less employment leverage, job stability and perks...   The proportion of Americans workers engaged in “alternative work” soared during the Obama era, from 10.7% in 2005 to 15.8% in 2015. Alternative, or "gig" work is...  generally unsteady, without a fixed paycheck and with virtually no benefits» (“94% Of All New Jobs Under Obama Were Part-Time» - ZeroHedge, Dec. 25, 2016).

“The persistence of such large numbers of involuntary part-time workers is an indicator of underlying weaknesses in the U.S. labor market, experts say. Involuntary part-time workers are twice as likely as voluntary part-time workers to be forced to work on weekends and holidays, and to be given unfavorable work schedules and job assignments” (As jobs growth sinks in March, millions of Americans are desperate to work full-time, MarketWatch, Apr 7, 2017).

In my article «America the Beautiful!  Америка - прекрасная! -  и ее поклонники», I noted: «Если ты упорно искал работу, но перестал искать из-за безысходности ситуации (работы просто нет!) ты стал «обескураженным» («discouraged worker”) - или, согласно правилам Министерства труда США «минимально подкреплён к занятому населению» («marginally attached to the workforce”), но, официально, никак не  «безработным»!  Много-миллионы отчаянных  попадают в эту категорию. Если ты работаешь всего лишь один час в неделе, ты  - официально  работающий (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Бюро статистики труда США). Вот так Правительство США борется с безработицей».

Even by including all part-time employees as “employed” (although that person may work no more than just one hour per week!), real unemployment in the United States of America is at least 30%.

This is a terrible tragedy for tens of millions of Americans.
