Often myths and fairytales focuses on mothers making sacrifices for their children and condemn mothers who abandons their children. In some versions of the story, the woodcutter falls down from the horse because his mom gave him hot pumpkin soup which he spills on the back of the horse thus missing his chance to go back to heaven and see his children. In terms of fatherhood, one of the most common trope is that of absentee father which correlates to the lack of stories and examples of fathers nurturing their children like mothers do. Woodcutter does become the absentee father and cannot nurture his children but due to his sadness he turns into rooster and crows every morning, lamenting the fact that he cannot see his children. I feel conflicted in a sense that this story is such a cliche of toxic masculinity where father ends up abandoning their children because of his lack of care but the fact that he cries every morning makes me feel like this is a slightly different take on fatherhood?
