"Yeah. I am," She whispered back, more certain of that little tidbit than she was of just about anything else. Tilted her gaze up toward the ceiling, she gave Bexley another small shrug. "In my experience, people tend to be the most honest when they're angry. It's when all of those thoughts that creep into the back of their head that they wouldn't dare utter out loud on a normal basis, come flowing out and, if there is one word I have been called repeated over the course of the past two years and a half, it's that one," She explaining quietly. Her gaze fell back down toward Bexley as she gave her another small shrug. "When enough people tell you something to be true, you find yourself realizing that, it can't all be them whose wrong. Enough people and eventually you see that the problem is you."
"I get it," She nodded, reaching out and giving Bex's hand a small squeeze. A thankful look filled her eyes as Bex promised not to tell. "Nah. I'm not," She let out a small laugh at the thought. "I'm a big cry baby, but I don't actually want to die or wither up like a prune or whatever would happen if I don't at least take in coffee, you know? And I guess, but I don't really feel like I have anyone to go to about it? I guess Meena, but I kind of have this, maybe somewhat delusional mentality of wanting my teachers to like me and I know Meena's more of a boss than a teacher, but I still want to get the A, if that makes any sense? I tried to go to Aaliyah with questions but she kind of wound up hazing me instead. It was a whole thing and, I tried to ask Ken, but he also sort of implied that I should know all of this Vampire stuff already... But, what about you? Do you have any witches you feel like you can go to as mentors and stuff?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At that, Bex frowned. "You're not a monster," she said immediately, even before Bri finished talking. "At least, not because you're a vampire. And I can pretty much see that you're not a bad person, so, yeah-- you're not a monster." Bex did, of course, see the irony in her own words. But the difference was that Bex had killed people, had run away from her problems. Bex was a monster because of who she was and what she'd done, not because of what she was.
"You're not? Why not?" Bex shrugged. "Yeah, I was kind of a really sick child, so I had some pretty hefty dietary restrictions, and it just kinda evolved and stuck from there." Bex perked up, though, as Bri began to explain, and she felt that cold twist in her stomach. She could understand all too well. Maybe she didn't have to drink blood, but she understood. "I won't," Bex said when Bri finished, "I promise. I won't tell anyone. If I were in your position, I don't think I'd even be able to stand it in my coffee. I don't even like coffee. You're pretty strong, though, you know? For doing it any way. But-- but you should probably talk to someone else about this? I mean, I know its gotta be hard. I know. It's not good to be starving yourself like that. I-- I know that all too well."

7 in 10 transgender people age 18-24 experience an eating disorder. These disorders are so pervasive in the LGBTQ community that the Biden administration earlier this month awarded a multi-million dollar grant to psychologists pioneering identity-affirming eating disorder treatment for LGBTQ people. Trans men experience even higher rates of eating disorders than their female counterparts and the highest rates of any demographic group, according to a 2023 study from the National Library of Medicine. Experts say trans people disproportionately struggle with eating disorders because they face body dysphoria, societal stigma, and a deep desire for control amidst a world that often feels hostile and invalidating. [...] “Most people assume those impacted are young, white, thin, and female. [But] only 6% of people who struggle with eating disorders are clinically underweight. When somebody who is not that model then has to navigate recovery in the real world, they're also having to navigate this landscape that doesn't see them as a person who is impacted.” Cisgender, white women are the most likely to be asked about eating disorders by their doctors and receive treatment. Men have reported struggling to feel understood by therapists, feeling unwanted in the treatment environment and that their concerns are not taken into account. This means a lot of men—and especially trans men—are left untreated. [...] Cyan found it easier to be open about his eating disorder when he was feminine presenting, but since he transitioned, he gets nervous talking about it. “I feel like it’s taken less seriously because I look like a man, and it’s more embarrassing to have to deal with it as a man. When I was considering my gender, I always thought men don't have to care about what they look like. But that was not the case.” Cyan says men are held to standards of fitness and “pressure to be strong in a certain way.” “There's a sense of fitness that is still expected when it comes to peak masculinity. It’s to be muscular and strong and I thought that’s what I needed to be.” [...] When trans men receive gender-affirming care, studies point to a reduction in eating disorder behaviors. Another 2019 study found that when gender is affirmed and gender dysphoria is reduced, eating disorder symptoms decrease.
I want to note that even though the study mentioned here is a meta-analysis, that doesn't mean it's perfect. A lot of the data it's drawing from had fairly small sample sizes. I don't think the takeaway here should be "trans men have it WORSE than trans women" because ultimately, what DOES seem pretty solid is that all trans people have higher rates of ED than cisgender men or women. And all trans people are vulnerable to the influence of misogyny in developing eating disorders. The takeaway is that transgender men are especially vulnerable to disordered eating, that should be discussed a lot more, and transmascs need ED recovery resources that take anti-transmasculinity into account and take it seriously. And also, free transitions for everybody forever.

god it’s even easier for a celebrity to blatantly have an ED now than it was in 2004. cause you’ll have your fans defending you like “she’s just healthy and vegan and stop assuming things about people’s bodies she was actually super unhealthy at a healthy weight❤️”

It is WILD to me that people continue to think they can "gotcha" me into saying the science on weight loss doesn't say what it says. Like, it's not what the authors say; it's what the data reflect. And the data don't give one single hot shit about your reason for wanting weight loss. You can have a terrible reason or a great reason and it doesn't matter. The reason behind your desire for an outcome doesn't change whether the data support the likelihood of it happening or not. There isn't a secret Option C here. The options are A) try to make peace with your weight or B) fight it forever. And if you fight it, the data are pretty clear that you're worse off than if you make peace and take the best care of yourself that you can. You can hate vegetables, you can want it to be easier to find clothes that fit, you can be disabled and find physical exertion challenging, but it doesn't matter. There is no secret option where, because you hate vegetables, your body works differently than every other body that's been studied.
There IS a database of people who have managed to sustain long-term large-scale weight loss. They're so rare we study them extensively. In general, they eat severely restricted diets and exercise for at least an hour a day. I have no desire to recommend eating disorders to my patients. If staying thin is occupying time and brain-space you could be putting into other things that are more meaningful to you, do those other things.

I don’t really talk much about my personal history with eating disorders and especially my bulimic tendencies partially because I’m just not that emo about it like it genuinely doesn’t bother me anymore and partially because I’m still obese after all that and people just don’t wanna confront the fact that all that nonsense just doesn’t make you skinny. It doesn’t even work. Like not only is it bad and dangerous it doesn’t even work. Like. I went through all that and what did I get? A cavity.

If I have to read one more "I hate picky eaters, they have the taste palette of a 5-year-old" post, I WILL actually start killing people. You don't want to be around "picky eaters?" Fine, then get the fuck away from us. We're better off without your judgment.
"But wahhhh why won't they just try something new" Shut. Up. Look up how things like adhd, autism, depression, and many more affect eating. Look up food allergies, intolerances, and general sensitivities. FUCKING LOOK UP ARFID. Seriously I am so damn tired of people not knowing shit about arfid, refusing to research even when I tell them about it (most of my doctors don't even know anything about it even though they've known about my struggles for over two years!) And then you have the nerve to shame us for dealing with an eating disorder that is fuck all hard to work through cuz, again, no one knows fucking shit about it and they don't want to learn! My therapist reached out to an eating disorder clinic to find help for me, and the only goddamn one who even knew it existed was the director.
Stay the hell away from so-called "picky eaters" if you're gonna make post after post complaining about how annoying you find us, or how you just so badly want to go to restaurants with your friend but they eat like a child! Go alone, asshole.

i love you self shippers recovering from eating disorders and disordered eating habits. i love you self shippers that have been officially diagnosed and i love you self shippers that have not been officially diagnosed. i love you self shippers who are trying to unlearn everything they’ve been taught. i love you self shippers who are trying to let go of everything they’ve been told. i love you self shippers in small bodies, i love you self shippers in big bodies, i love you self shippers whose struggles are overlooked or dismissed because of the size of your body. i love you self shippers that have been in recovery for years and i love you self shippers that have been been in recovery for a day. i love you self shippers that dream of recovery. i love you. your f/os love you. they will be with you and they love you every step of the way.

osemanverse allergies and intolerances
a list of headcanons and why they are 100% correct
BLISS
obviously, bliss is lactose intolerant. cause nobody loves dairy more than lactose intolerant people.
ROWAN
rowan is allergic to cat hair because as we’ve established he is allergic to going to therapy, so naturally he’d also be allergic to the ark’s therapy cat. doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have both. pill up, bitch.
LISTER
lister is severely allergic to shellfish. reasons being that in my experience, shellfish are a more elite, rich people meal, something you’d order at a fancy restaurant, i.e. something lister wouldn’t have had growing up poor. however, once he comes into money, he would try some for the first time and almost die, which shows that his current decadent lifestyle is very unhealthy.
JIMMY
jimmy is coeliac but he doesn’t know it yet. for one, he is constantly fatigued, which could in part be related to — and reinforced by — a severe iron deficiency. also, he is canonically shown to suffer from disordered eating, since he tends to skip and forget meals. this mirrors what many coeliacs tend to struggle with (and i assume people with other allergies too, i’m just speaking from my own experience); if your food options are greatly limited, it’s easy to skip or straight-up forget a meal.
GEORGIA
georgia is coeliac but she doesn’t know it yet because i’m tumblr user georgiaswarr and i say so.
SUNIL
sunil is allergic to nuts. that’s an asexual and trans joke.
TORI
tori has seasonal allergies because we all know her as a winter girlie, so tori in spring (no pun intended but pun greatly appreciated) doesn’t sit right with me. or her sinuses.
MICHAEL
michael has a loooooot of allergies; wheat, dairy, peanuts, oats, just to name a few. we all know he was very ostracised and unpopular at truham, something that would be reinforced by his ‘weird’ and ‘annoying’ dietary restrictions. after all, which horrible teenage boy is gonna like the kid that got peanuts banned on school grounds?
FRANCES
frances is allergic to certain fruits such as bananas or kiwis. however, she thinks that’s just how they’re supposed to taste, they’re supposed to hurt a bit. you know, just how she thought studying and university was just supposed to be painful without reflecting on why those expectations caused her this much suffering.
ELLE
elle is allergic to nuts. that’s another trans joke.

you cannot call yourself pro-feminist if you’re going to fetishize eating disorders & anti-slavic sentiment. “slavic dolls” are just that– a fetishistic portrayal of extremely & unhealthily skinny women from slavic places. it is rooted in white supremacy as well, since western european culture is distinctly & obviously different from eastern european culture, thus unable of being grouped under the same category– slavic women are “exotic” & “different” enough, but also white enough to fit eurocentric standards of beauty. this portrayal outcasts the vast majority of slavic women with beautiful & visibly slavic features, taking up the small minority of slavic women who do indeed look the most similar to the average western woman: fetishizing slavic features & unhealthily underweight female bodies. this is, by every textbook definition, the commodification of female bodies, as well as idolization of patriarchal perfection & patriarchal beauty. you cannot be pro-feminist if you support & promote xenophobic patriarchal tools.
