Preparing Kids for Success: English Exam Preparation Strategies
Tumblr media
As children progress through their education, English exams become a significant part of their academic journey. Mastering the English language is essential for achieving good results in exams, and effective preparation is crucial. This blog will explore various strategies and resources to support English exam preparation for kids, with a focus on vocabulary building activities and the benefits of online English classes for children.
Understanding the Importance of English Exam Preparation
English exams assess a student's understanding of the language, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They often cover various topics, including grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary. Proper preparation is essential for several reasons:
Building Confidence: Adequate preparation helps students feel more confident in their abilities, reducing anxiety during exams.
Enhancing Understanding: Through consistent study and practice, children deepen their understanding of the English language and its nuances.
Improving Performance: Well-prepared students are likely to achieve higher scores, opening doors to future academic opportunities.
Encouraging Lifelong Learning: Mastery of the English language provides a foundation for continuous learning, as it is essential in both personal and professional contexts.
Vocabulary Building Activities
One of the key components of English exam preparation for kids is vocabulary development. A strong vocabulary enhances reading comprehension, writing ability, and overall communication skills. Here are some engaging vocabulary building activities to help kids expand their word bank:
Word Games:
Scrabble: This classic board game encourages kids to form words and learn new vocabulary in a fun way.
Boggle: A word search game that helps children think quickly and expand their vocabulary by finding words in a grid of letters.
Flashcards:
Create flashcards with a new word on one side and its definition or a picture representing the word on the other. Use these cards for quick review sessions and to reinforce learning.
Vocabulary Journals:
Encourage children to keep a vocabulary journal where they can write down new words they encounter. They can include definitions, sentences using the words, and synonyms or antonyms.
Contextual Learning:
Read books, articles, or stories with your child and discuss unfamiliar words in context. This approach helps them understand how to use words correctly in different situations.
Thematic Word Lists:
Create themed word lists around specific topics (e.g., nature, emotions, technology) and encourage children to use these words in sentences or stories.
Interactive Apps:
Many educational apps focus on vocabulary development through engaging games and quizzes. Some popular options include Vocabulary.com, Quizlet, and Memrise.
Online English Classes for Children
Tumblr media
In today’s digital age, online English classes for children have become an increasingly popular option for parents seeking to enhance their child's language skills. Here are some of the benefits of online English classes:
Flexible Scheduling:
Online classes often offer flexible schedules, allowing parents to choose times that best fit their family's routine. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for busy families juggling multiple commitments.
Personalized Learning:
Many online programs allow for personalized instruction tailored to each child's learning style and pace. This individualized approach can help children grasp concepts more effectively.
Access to Qualified Instructors:
Online platforms often provide access to experienced English teachers who can offer valuable insights and support. These instructors can address specific challenges students may face.
Interactive Learning Environment:
Online classes typically incorporate multimedia resources, such as videos, interactive quizzes, and discussion forums, to engage students and make learning more dynamic.
Diverse Learning Resources:
Online courses often include a wealth of materials, including reading assignments, practice tests, and vocabulary exercises, ensuring that students have a well-rounded approach to exam preparation.
Safe Learning Environment:
For students who may feel shy or anxious in traditional classroom settings, online classes can provide a comfortable space to learn and participate without the pressure of a physical classroom.
Strategies for Effective Exam Preparation
In addition to vocabulary building activities and online English classes for children, several strategies can enhance overall English exam preparation. Here are some tips for parents and educators:
Create a Study Schedule:
Establish a structured study schedule that breaks down study sessions into manageable chunks. Consistent daily practice is more effective than cramming close to exam time.
Practice Past Papers:
Familiarize children with the exam format by practicing past papers. This exposure helps them understand the types of questions they may encounter and build confidence in their abilities.
Incorporate Reading and Writing:
Encourage daily reading and writing to reinforce language skills. Reading a variety of texts, from fiction to non-fiction, broadens vocabulary and enhances comprehension.
Engage in Conversations:
Encourage open conversations at home, prompting children to express their thoughts and ideas. This practice develops verbal communication skills and reinforces vocabulary usage.
Join Study Groups:
If possible, arrange study sessions with peers. Collaborative learning can motivate students and help them learn from each other.
Monitor Progress:
Regularly assess your child's progress and adjust the study plan as needed. Celebrate achievements to keep motivation high.
Leveraging Technology for Learning
Technology plays a significant role in modern education. There are numerous online resources and tools that can support English exam preparation for kids:
Educational Websites: Websites like Khan Academy, BBC Bitesize, and Scholastic offer interactive lessons, quizzes, and activities tailored for children's language learning.
Language Learning Apps: Applications such as Duolingo and Busuu provide engaging platforms for children to practice vocabulary and grammar through gamified experiences.
Video Resources: Platforms like YouTube host educational channels that cover grammar rules, vocabulary, and reading strategies, providing visual and auditory learning opportunities.
The Role of Parents in English Exam Preparation
Parents play a vital role in their child's academic journey. Here are some ways parents can support English exam preparation:
Encourage a Love for Reading:
Provide access to various books that match your child's interests and reading level. Regular reading can spark curiosity and improve comprehension skills.
Be Involved:
Stay informed about what your child is learning in school. Attend parent-teacher conferences, communicate with teachers, and ask about ways to support your child's learning at home.
Create a Positive Learning Environment:
Establish a quiet, dedicated space for studying that is free from distractions. A positive environment fosters focus and motivation.
Celebrate Efforts:
Recognize and celebrate your child's hard work and achievements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement can boost their confidence and motivation.
Be Patient and Supportive:
Encourage your child to ask questions and seek help when needed. Your support and understanding can ease their stress during exam preparation.
Conclusion
English exam preparation is a vital part of a child’s educational journey, and incorporating effective strategies can lead to success. By engaging in vocabulary building activities, enrolling in online English classes for children, and utilizing technology to enhance learning, parents and educators can provide children with the tools they need to excel.

Phonics Games Online: Enhancing Learning for Young Minds
Tumblr media
Phonics is the building block of early literacy, where children learn the relationship between sounds and letters. Through engaging and interactive methods, phonics instruction makes reading more accessible and enjoyable. With the rise of digital learning, phonics games online have become an essential tool for parents and educators alike, offering a dynamic way to help children master this vital skill. From matching sounds with letters to decoding simple words, these games are designed to reinforce phonics learning in a fun, engaging, and interactive manner.
Why Are Phonics Games Online So Effective?
The shift toward digital learning has made online resources more crucial than ever before. Online phonics games tap into children's natural love for play, making learning less of a chore and more of an adventure. Here’s why they are so effective:
Interactive and Engaging: Children are naturally curious, and online phonics games allow them to explore and learn in an interactive way. Whether it’s matching sounds with letters or finding hidden words, these games keep their attention while reinforcing core phonics skills.
Immediate Feedback: Unlike traditional learning methods, phonics games provide instant feedback, allowing children to correct their mistakes on the spot and improve their understanding in real-time.
Adaptive Learning: Many online phonics platforms adjust the difficulty based on the child’s progress, ensuring that they are continually challenged without becoming overwhelmed.
Multisensory Approach: Online phonics games engage multiple senses—sight, sound, and sometimes even touch (for touch-screen devices). This multisensory learning helps solidify the connection between letters and sounds.
Convenience: With phonics games online, children can practice anywhere and anytime. Parents can easily integrate these games into their child’s routine, making learning accessible and flexible.
Phonics Lessons for Kindergarten: The Foundation of Literacy
Phonics is an essential part of early education, especially for kindergarteners who are just beginning their reading journey. Phonics lessons for kindergarten focus on teaching children the sounds associated with letters and how to blend these sounds to form words.
These lessons typically include:
Letter-Sound Correspondence: This is the first step in phonics instruction, where children learn the sounds that each letter makes. Activities may include flashcards, songs, or games that emphasize the relationship between letters and their corresponding sounds.
Blending Sounds: After learning individual letter sounds, children move on to blending these sounds together to form words. For example, blending the sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/ to say "cat."
Segmenting Words: Segmenting is the opposite of blending. Here, children break words down into individual sounds. For example, the word "dog" would be broken down into /d/, /o/, and /g/. This skill helps in both reading and spelling.
Sight Words: Phonics lessons also incorporate sight words—words that children must recognize without having to sound them out. Examples include words like "the," "and," and "is." These words often don’t follow regular phonics rules, so they are taught through repetition and memorization.
Phonics lessons for kindergarten are designed to be playful and engaging. Teachers often use songs, rhymes, and games to make learning fun while ensuring children grasp the fundamental concepts of phonics.
Phonics Activities for Kindergarten: Making Learning Fun
To support phonics lessons, educators and parents use various phonics activities for kindergarten that are fun, hands-on, and interactive. Here are some popular phonics activities that can help children practice and reinforce their skills:
Phonics Puzzles: Matching pictures to words, or letters to sounds, can be an excellent way for children to practice phonics. Puzzles are a tactile, hands-on way to reinforce the connection between letters and sounds.
Phonics Bingo: A classic game with a phonics twist! Instead of numbers, Bingo cards can feature letters, sounds, or simple words. This activity encourages listening and word recognition.
Sound Hunts: In this activity, children hunt for objects around the house or classroom that start with a specific sound. For example, if the target sound is "b," they might find a book, a ball, or a bag.
Rhyming Games: Rhyming is an important phonological skill. Games that focus on finding words that rhyme (like "cat" and "bat") can help children develop their phonemic awareness.
Word Building with Magnetic Letters: Using magnetic letters, children can practice building words on a magnetic board. They can start by making simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words like "dog" or "hat," and then move on to more complex words.
Storytime Phonics: Reading stories aloud and focusing on specific phonics sounds is another great activity. Encourage children to listen for certain sounds in the story, or to predict what letter or sound a word will start with.
Phonics activities for kindergarten are designed to reinforce the skills taught in phonics lessons while making learning a fun, hands-on experience.
Online Phonics Classes: Learning Anytime, Anywhere
As education becomes more digitized, online phonics classes have emerged as an excellent resource for parents who want to support their child's literacy development. These classes often feature a structured curriculum that includes videos, games, interactive lessons, and live sessions with instructors.
Online phonics classes provide:
Flexible Learning: With online classes, children can learn at their own pace. Whether they need extra time to practice certain sounds or are ready to move ahead, the flexibility of online learning allows for a personalized experience.
Interactive Content: Online phonics programs often include games, videos, and quizzes that keep children engaged and make learning fun. These interactive elements ensure that children stay motivated and interested in the lessons.
Live Instructor Support: Many online phonics classes also offer live sessions with trained instructors. This personal interaction allows children to ask questions, receive feedback, and build a connection with their teacher.
Trackable Progress: Parents can monitor their child's progress through reports and updates, helping them understand where their child excels and where they may need extra help.
A top provider of online phonics classes is Kiya Learning, which offers a wide range of phonics programs designed for different age groups and skill levels. With a focus on making learning enjoyable and effective, Kiya Learning has become a trusted resource for parents around the world.

Readerly exploration #1 & #2
Due: Aug. 28th
“Toward an Educationally Relevant Theory of Literacy Learning”
Takeaway: A student’s engagement is key! If a student does not engage in literacy or language, no learning will occur.
Nugget: Sometimes we don’t realize the simple things like how habits are best formed by associating a desired response with the appropriate stimulus. This all relates back to dynamic systems theory. When a human perceives something as appealing or motivating, they are more likely to act.
“Building a Literacy Community: The Role of Literacy and Social Practice in Early Childhood Programs”
Takeaway: It is so beneficial for teachers or aides to extend a child’s need to maintain sel- direction as well as their problem- solving abilities. This gives the child a sense of ownership and independence.
Nugget: I think it’s so crazy that teachers have the ability to recognize patterns in a young student’s writing/ print and they can use this as a guide in selecting appropriate reading materials and sound games to focus on that individual student.
Activity
For these readings I decided to learn something about the author(s) of the readings and note how what I’ve learned impacted my motivation and/ or purpose for the reading.
“Toward an Educationally Relevant Theory of Literacy Learning”:
Brain Cambourne is currently an associate professor and Principal Fellow at the University of Wollongong in NSW, Australia. He began teaching in 1956 and has since become one of Australia’s most eminent researchers for literacy and learning. He is best known for creating the 7 conditions for learning. Cambourne believes that these seven factors must be in place to provide an optimal learning environment for all students. It is clear that Cambourne is very passionate about this topic. He has spent over 20 years researching in finding an educationally relevant theory of learning. He knew that what he observed day to day in a classroom conflicted with what he knew these children could do. These children did not display the deficits of understanding and mastering skills. He knew he needed to act.
“Building a Literacy Community: The Role of Literacy and Social Practice in Early Childhood Programs”:
Susan J. Britsch is an associate professor of Literacy and Language Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University. Britsch is also a formal preschool teacher. She has published several other academic articles about children’s language and literacy development and about the ways in which teachers are able to research perspectives of young children’s behavior. Daniel R. Meier is a professor of Elementary Education at San Francisco State University. Dr. Meier works with local early childhood inquiry groups and teaches preschool in the area of language and literacy development. He, too, has written multiple articles and books on early childhood education, language, literacy education, international education, etc. Britsch and Meier both have expertise in the area of young children and you can tell they worked very diligently to write such an informative article. It is important to recognize that there is attention being called to direct instruction in reading skill development from preschool to third grade. Together, they were able to address and research the needs of young students. There is community in literacy and it can all be tied to notions of literacy teaching and learning as a social practice.

Reader Exploration #2
August 28, 2023
Cambourne (1995), “Toward an Educationally Relevant Theory of Literacy Learning Britsch & Meier (1999), “Building a Literacy Community: The Role of Literacy and Social Practice in Early Childhood Programs”
Cambourne’s message was that authentic literacy experiences are most impactful. Britsch and Meier's message was how early childhood literacy programs that allow children and parents to have ownership of their literacy and have inclusion and promote thinking processes are good for young children.
Throughout Cambourne’s article I kept asking myself “what is the best practice for teaching and teaching literacy to students?” I really liked how Cambourne incorporated his original thinking and theories of teaching. He proved himself wrong through his experience and research. His theories on how we should teach based on how children learn to speak was fascinating to me. He looked at how kids learn in their natural environment, through engagement, transformation, discussions and reflections for oneself and with others, and applying what is being taught/learned.
During Britsch and Meier’s article I found it interesting how in two totally different early childhood centers; the same study was being conducted and the same results were being said. My biggest takeaway from this article was the three critical themes of literacy learning, which are the importance of literacy ownership by the children and adults, seeing literacy as an inclusive process, and the role of thinking processes in the students' evolving literacy.
I chose to use Cambourne’s article on authentic literacy experiences. In order to read texts deeply in order to interpret and analyze the various layers of this article I decided to learn something about Cambourne and help use that information to draw conclusions of the motivations behind the reading or the credibility/quality of the writing done.
I used this website https://ed640xa.weebly.com/brian-cambourne.html and found some more information on the author. Cambourne is a principal fellow at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. Before he became an associate professor he taught for 15 years in mostly one teacher schools. He has become one of Australian’s most eminent researchers of both literacy and learning.  Cambourne’s major interest of research is in professional development for literacy education.
Reading more about Cambourne and where he is from really helped me understand the point behind his research paper. He came up with the 8 conditions of learning that the article talked about; immersion, demonstration, engagement, expectation, responsibility, approximation, use/employment, and response. Seeing that Cambourne was a very smart man with a post doctoral fellow of Harvard Graduate School of Education and all of his other researched he conducted throughout his years of teaching and professional development, it made me see that his article is very authentic. Like Cambourne said in his article how their needs to be a form of respect and expectations when it comes to learning (especially literacy) it made me have respect and expectations of his writing. Knowing all of the background he has, I can see that he is authentic and he knows what he is talking about. What he is saying is truthful and I need to take that with me into the classroom and my own pedagogies.

Australia politics live: Zelenskiy urges Albanese to attend Ukraine peace summit; half of gas exports are ‘royalty-free’
The Ukraine president told the PM he needs as many nations as possible to attend next month’s summit in Switzerland. Follow the day’s news live * Get our morning and afternoon news emails, free app or daily news podcast Almost half of year six and 10 students are falling behind in science, rising to six in ten Indigenous students, a new report by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority shows. The national assessment program science literary report surveyed students’ general science literacy skills and knowledge across a sample of schools in 2023. It found there had been little national improvement in outcomes since the tests began in the early 2000s, while significant gaps amongst disadvantaged cohorts had also remained stubbornly high. Some 57% of year 6 students attained the proficient standard in 2023, compared with 58% when the last test was completed in 2018. Some 54% of year 10 students reached the standard, compared with 50% the previous round. Amongst Indigenous students, 34% in year 6 and just 28% in year 10 attained the proficient standard. There were also significant differences between students with parents from the highest and the lowest occupational and educational groups. It’s critical we are arming Australian students with the science literacy necessary not only to be able to participate as active citizens in our ever-advancing technological society, but also to help overcome its challenges, minimise its risks and contribute to its development. If you engaged an agent to sell your house for the best price, but instead they gave it to their mate for free, you would be angry. This is exactly what Australian governments from both political parties have been doing with our gas resources for decades. Australians have missed out on better healthcare, education and public housing because the gas industry hasn’t been paying for the gas it exports. Children and America’s Literacy Crisis
Tumblr media
A Pew Research Center study found that nearly one out of four adult Americans goes at least 12 months without reading a book. The average American reads 12.6 books per year, down from 15.6 in 2016. Fewer adults than ever before are reading more than 10 books annually, with the decline most notable among college graduates.
The lack of reading among American adults can be connected to the national literacy crisis: More than 20 percent of the country is illiterate, while roughly 54 percent of adults have a literacy level on par with a sixth-grade student or lower. A Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies study found that Americans trailed Japan, Canada, Australia, Finland, and several additional countries in reading, as well as math and problem-solving.
The literacy crisis can be seen in the nation’s children as well. A study from the National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance found that only 33 percent of American students read at a proficient level. The organization has monitored child literacy for over 40 years, and while math scores have notably risen, reading scores have stagnated or decreased.
The importance of supporting literacy and instilling a love of reading in children from an early age cannot be overstated. Children who cannot read proficiently, or who struggle to read at all, are more likely to fail classes and accrue more absences. Students with low literacy are also more likely to act out in class, along with other behaviors that make it difficult for students to graduate on time, if at all. Adults who do not complete their high school education face a myriad of challenges, including a lower annual salary and a greater likelihood of various health risks.
One of the most simple and effective ways to help children improve literacy and develop a positive relationship with reading is to read with them at bedtime. Changing reading from an arduous task associated with school into a fun bonding experience makes all the difference for some children. Similarly, older family members can model good reading behavior, and improve their own literacy and vocabulary, by reading regularly.
Additional tips include providing children with access to libraries and library cards, remembering to bring reading materials on family vacations, and encouraging all types of reading, including magazines and comic books. It can also be helpful to read what children are reading and make further recommendations. A few of the most popular children’s books of all time include Where the Wild Things Are, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Hobbit, and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy.
On a national scale, lawmakers can look to states like Massachusetts, the national leader in child literacy, to help improve states with inferior child literacy levels, such as California, the state with the lowest literacy rate among adults. Individuals can contribute to many philanthropic organizations providing literacy services to children and adults throughout the nation, including Save the Children and programs managed by the Division of Adult Education and Literacy, part of the Department of Education.

The Power of Phonics: Building Strong Reading Foundations for Kids in Australia
Tumblr media
In Australia, the importance of early literacy has become more critical than ever. As the foundation of a child's reading and writing journey, phonics plays a crucial role in helping children understand how sounds form words, enabling them to read with confidence and fluency. From early years in kindergarten to online learning options, phonics education offers an array of strategies to support a child’s overall development in reading and language. In this blog, we will delve deep into the Phonics curriculum in Australia, provide insights into phonics for kindergarten Australia, share tips on how to teach phonics to kids, explore the rising popularity of online phonics classes for kids, discuss the connection between phonics and reading development, and highlight the best phonics programs for children—with special mention of the services provided by Kiya Learning.
Understanding the Phonics Curriculum in Australia
The phonics curriculum in Australia is designed to provide children with the essential tools to decode written language by associating sounds with letters. Phonics instruction is typically embedded in the broader literacy framework across Australian schools and is particularly emphasized in the early years of education. The curriculum focuses on:
Systematic teaching: Phonics is taught in a structured and sequential way, ensuring that children are introduced to new sounds gradually and in a logical order.
Blending and segmenting: These core skills help children to merge sounds to form words (blending) and break words down into individual sounds (segmenting), which aids both reading and spelling.
Explicit instruction: Teachers use direct and clear instruction methods, ensuring students are aware of how phonics works and how it applies to their reading and writing.
In Australia, the national phonics check is also used as an assessment tool for students in Year 1 to monitor their phonics progress. This screening test ensures that children are on the right track and helps identify those who might need additional support.
Phonics for Kindergarten in Australia
The early years of a child's education lay the groundwork for future academic success. Phonics for kindergarten Australia introduces young learners to the basics of phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and letter-sound correspondence. At this stage, learning is made fun and engaging through various activities that resonate with young minds.
Key aspects of phonics instruction in kindergarten include:
Phonological awareness: This refers to the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words. Children begin by learning to recognize rhyming words, count syllables, and identify the first and last sounds in words.
Letter-sound recognition: In kindergarten, children learn that each letter of the alphabet corresponds to specific sounds. This knowledge is crucial for them to begin reading simple words and sentences.
Visual aids and play-based learning: Kindergarten phonics lessons often incorporate the use of colorful visuals, flashcards, and playful activities like songs and rhymes. These activities keep children engaged and motivated as they explore the world of sounds.
At Kiya Learning, we offer specialized phonics for kindergarten Australia classes, ensuring young learners have the support they need to build a strong foundation. Through interactive lessons, we make phonics learning enjoyable while focusing on early reading skills.
How to Teach Phonics to Kids
Teaching phonics to children requires patience, creativity, and a structured approach. Whether you're a teacher, tutor, or parent, knowing how to teach phonics to kids effectively can make a significant difference in a child's literacy journey. Here are some strategies to keep in mind:
Start with Phonemic Awareness: Before children can learn letter sounds, they need to understand that words are made up of individual sounds (phonemes). Activities like clapping out syllables, identifying beginning sounds, and playing sound-matching games help develop this awareness.
Teach Letters and Sounds in a Specific Order: It's essential to introduce letters and their corresponding sounds in a specific sequence. Starting with simple consonants and short vowel sounds gives children the confidence to blend sounds and form basic words like "cat," "dog," and "sun."
Blending and Segmenting Practice: Once children know some sounds, teach them to blend these sounds together to form words. For example, the sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/ blend to form the word "cat." Additionally, teach them to segment words by breaking them down into individual sounds, like "dog" into /d/, /o/, and /g/.
Use Repetition and Reinforcement: Repetition is key in phonics instruction. Regularly revisiting letters, sounds, and words helps children retain what they’ve learned. Reinforcement activities like writing letters in sand, using alphabet magnets, or creating word walls can make learning more tactile and memorable.
Incorporate Fun Activities: Phonics doesn’t have to be boring. Include fun yoga activities for kids where they stretch into letter shapes or associate sounds with animal movements. Creative games, crafts, and songs will keep children engaged while they learn.
At Kiya Learning, our experienced educators understand how to teach phonics to kids in a way that supports their individual learning styles. Our phonics lessons incorporate multi-sensory activities to help kids master sounds while keeping the process fun and enjoyable.
The Rise of Online Phonics Classes for Kids
Tumblr media
With the rise of digital education, online phonics classes for kids have become a popular option for parents who want to support their child's literacy development from home. Online classes offer flexibility and convenience while providing access to quality instruction.
Key benefits of online phonics classes include:
Interactive learning platforms: Online phonics classes use interactive tools such as games, videos, and quizzes to engage children and keep their attention. Many platforms offer instant feedback, helping children recognize and correct mistakes in real-time.
Personalized learning paths: Online classes often adapt to a child’s pace, allowing them to focus on areas where they need the most practice. This personalized approach ensures that children do not feel rushed or overwhelmed.
Access to experienced educators: Online phonics platforms often provide access to qualified phonics instructors who guide children through their lessons and offer tailored support.
Convenient scheduling: With online classes, parents can choose sessions that fit their family’s schedule, making it easier to integrate phonics learning into daily routines.
Kiya Learning offers online phonics classes for kids that blend technology with traditional phonics methods. Our interactive lessons are designed to make learning engaging while providing each child with the tools they need to succeed in reading and writing.
Phonics and Reading Development
Phonics is an essential building block of literacy. When children master phonics, they unlock the ability to read fluently, which opens the doors to lifelong learning. The connection between phonics and reading development is undeniable, as phonics teaches children to recognize patterns, decode unfamiliar words, and understand the rules of spelling.
Decoding skills: Phonics gives children the tools to break down new words into individual sounds, enabling them to read unfamiliar words with confidence.
Spelling: By understanding the relationship between letters and sounds, children can apply phonics rules to spell words correctly.
Fluency: When children become proficient in phonics, they can read more quickly and accurately. Fluency is essential for comprehension, as it allows children to focus on understanding the text rather than sounding out each word.
Strong phonics instruction leads to better reading outcomes and ensures that children develop the skills needed for academic success. At Kiya Learning, we focus on both phonics and reading development to ensure that children not only learn to read but also enjoy the process of exploring new books and stories.

When choosing the right phonics program for your child, it’s essential to look for a curriculum that is research-based, engaging, and aligned with Australian education standards. Victorian culture and art
More access made British cultural products more important. Not only did they reveal much about the society from which they emerged, but during the Victorian period Britain was the cultural capital of the English-speaking world (including United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand). Victorian performance and print culture were rich and varied, a blend of melodrama, spectacle and morality.
Theatre thrived. Melodrama—which featured evil villains, virtuous heroines, and intricate plots were the most popular genre early on; later, sensation drama became popular. Even more popular were music halls, which featured varied programs of singing, dancing, sketches and more; these emerged in the 1850s, and by the 1870s there were hundreds across Britain, some seating thousands of people. Music halls attracted people of all classes.
Print culture was also large and diverse, aided by relatively high literacy rates. There were hundreds of magazines and newspapers available at ever cheaper prices. The 1880s saw the emergence of "the New Journalism," which drew in readers with pieces on violent crimes and scandals in high society. Novels were another key feature of Victorian print culture. By mid-century, Britons of all classes could afford and read novels. Some were aimed at highly educated an well-off people, others at less-educated readers looking for appealing and exciting stories. Penny dreadfuls and sensation novels, seen at their best in the work of Wilkie Collins, thrilled their readers. Victorian novels were often quite long, with complicated plots (often centred on marriages) and many characters. many especially those by Charles Dickens, are still read today.
