Marine Corps and Navy emblems adorn several panels at the Iwo Jima display in the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Each emblem represents a serviceman who lost their life during the battle.
March 26, 1945, marked the end of the 36-day long battle that resulted in over 26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 killed in action.
The battle for Iwo Jima also saw 27 Medals of Honor awarded to Marine and Navy personnel for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.

do you have any other ocs besides tsuna?
Oh, man. Thank you for asking more fun questions, inquisitive anon.
Well! For someone who says they don't have any ocs... after compiling them all that might be a lie LOL. But to be fair, they mostly revolve around Tsuna and only 2 are actually alts I play on 🤷
There's a list lmao. 🧵
Family.
Kartal Deryaoğlu
(DERE-yah-oh-loo)
Tsuna's father. A Hannish merchant specializing in the silk trade between Ilsabard and Hingashi. His return voyage to Yanxia was unable to anchor during the occupation in 1552.
Kartal meaning 'eagle' and "Deryaoğlu" meaning 'child of the sea'. His name represents the star Altair. His green eyes bring to mind the deep jungles of Thavnair.
Suzume Sui Wasaishi
Tsuna's mother. Suzume meaning 'sparrow', Sui being the surname given to all born from Sui-no-Sato, and Wasaishi meaning 'kimono tailor' refers to her occupation after becoming an assimilated Raen. Her blue eyes bring to mind the clear waters of the Ruby Sea.
Tsuna takes her mother's surname due to hatred of her father.
Being a tailor she represents the star Vega. Together they are a reference to Tanabata -- or star festival. Like Hikoboshi (Altair) and Orihime (Vega) who are allowed to meet once a year when they cross the milky way, Kartal and Suzume are separated every year by the Glass Sea due to his occupation.
Mihrimah Deryaoğlu
Mihri meaning 'sun' and Mah meaning 'moon'. She takes her father's surname. Tsuna's paternal sister. Relations between her mother and father are strained but she still visits and takes care of him in his old age. They're possibly separated. Nothing else is known.
Odgerel Ejinn
Odgerel meaning 'starlight' in Mongolian, and Ejinn is the name of a Xaela tribe that chooses to swim from place to place rather than walk or take boats.
Tsuna's danna-- or patron of her art-- when she was still a geiko in Kugane. A wealthy Xaela merchant who offered to pay off Tsuna's debts to her Okiya in exchange for her hand in marriage. They were set to be wed soon after she fled Kugane. Nothing else is known.
-> More on danna.
Azem Ourania
Tsuna's Azem. Ourania (Urania) was one of the nine Mousai (Muses), the goddesses of music, song and dance. In the Classical era, when the Mousai were assigned specific artistic and literary spheres, Ourania was named Muse of astronomy and astronomical writings. In this guise she was depicted pointing at a celestial globe with a rod.
I haven't figured out much about her but I like to imagine she worked with or close by Maira and Alkaios (when she wasn't disappearing for weeks on end) which lead to Nymeia watching over Tsuna's 'spark'.
Others.
Rael Eruyt
Not related to Tsuna.
Rael was a name of a Viera in FFXII and doesn't seem to be nordic but can mean 'a friend to God.' Eruyt being the forest in which she was born. In another timeline she is the bodyguard of a Warrior of Light where she acts as the stoic friend with the voice of reason.
Has the Echo but not Hydaelyn's blessing, and can hear the Green Word if the Elementals deign to speak to a wayward Viera. Is a natural survivalist and botanist, excelling in archery and salve-making. Hates technology. Might have had a lover that she outlived. Garleans might have razed her forest. Idk. Thinking about giving her a complicated Thing with Leofard or Gaius.
I break my rule of being lore-strict because I (mostly) go by FFXII lore for her and not XIV. I don't have anything solidified about her despite having her as an alt for many years. I'm still figuring out if I want her name to be Valtyr lol.
Pon-Ea-Kotor
Name very tentative. ‘Pon’ meaning small and House Kotor overseeing the Palace of the Dead. Feral forest child. Possibly mute or at the least very quiet and awkward. Wanders aimless through the forest like a ghost with her moogle friend. She's still in the workshop.
There's also a wildwood, midlander and highlander I've designed but they have no lore at all.
#asks ; playing postmoogle#Anonymous#xoxo talks meta#oh I really fucked this formatting#lore ; weaving a story.

Al

Husk . I Struggled so fucking much but for better reference; Wolverine. The thing on his chest is hair- lol and also the top of the Marine symbol as a tattoo. It's like an eagle on a globe with an anchor.

Nifty

And a doodle of Rosie I made that a bit ago

She looks the best UwU. She looks like a model and it's thanks to Velvet lol
Here's some other stuff for later
Like Nifty, Rosie and Al plotting revenge?
Pete: Hehe, I'm in danger

And Vark and Cavalier

I’ve been showing off my 20 gal but this is actually the one that started it all. It’s a little 10 gallon that my brother got while i was in the marines and now that I’m back home and he’s at school it’s my turn to take care of it.
We decided to completely redo it once I took it over, we kept the fish it already had but added a bunch of new plants and decor including one of my old eagle globe and anchors that I didn’t need anymore.

Unfortunately I don’t have any decent pictures of it since then but here it is right before I trimmed it.

After a couple of months and losing a couple plants(but thankfully no fish) it looks great, the zebra danios love it and you can see them racing around the tank pretty much 24/7. I did get a bit of a snail infestation so i had to pick up a couple of assassin snails to help deal with it but besides that it’s gone swimmingly.

The USMC is over 219 years of romping, stomping, hell, death and destruction. The finest fighting machine the world has ever seen. We were born in a bomb crater, our mother was an M-16 and our father was the devil.
Each moment that I live is an additional threat upon your life. I am a rough-looking, roving soldier of the sea. I am cocky, self-centered, overbearing, and I do not know the meaning of fear, for I am fear itself. I am a green, amphibious monster made of blood and guts who arose from the sea, festering on anti-Americans throughout the globe. Whenever it may arise, and when my time comes, I will die a glorious death on the battle field, giving my life to mom, the Corps, and the American flag.
We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the anchor from the Navy, and the rope from the Army. On the 7th day, while God rested, we over-ran his perimeter and stole the globe, and we've been running the show ever since. We live like soldiers and talk like sailors and slap the hell out of both of them. Soldier by day, lover by night, drunkard by choice, Marine by God!

here's an example of ChatGTP over-interpreting visual data; transformed my uniform from US Navy NROTC at Texas A&M to USMC. Modified the patch for the Naval Regiment to just a plain USMC Anchor, Globe and Eagle. Ditto the basic Anchor on the headwear...transformed into Anchor, Globe & and Eagle, too. Which does exist for Marine Option NROTC but I wasn't. I was Navy option.

Late at night, eyes blurred from spending the day in the hospital visiting his father, who was broadsided when another car ran a light, Mark crosses out “blood-red,” and replaces it with “bloody red.”

3 key takeaways from Davos from Ukraine’s economy minister

The discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos were a stark reminder of how interconnected the global economy is, and how Ukraine’s stability — or lack thereof — affects us all. From military aid to economic sanctions, the steps we take now will shape the future not just for Ukraine, but for the world.
The war Russia has unleashed on Ukraine is not only a threat to our country, but also a destabilizing force for the entire world economy. One of the clearest signs of this disruption was the unprecedented surge in global wheat prices, soaring to over $450 per ton in spring 2022, driving hunger across the globe. Or consider the speculative spike in gas prices last year when Russia attacked Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities.
Every missile Russia targets at Ukraine is a strike at the heart of the global economy. If we are serious about global stability, we must address the root cause: Russia’s aggression. As long as instability persists in Ukraine, it will reverberate around the world.
“Every missile Russia targets at Ukraine is a strike at the heart of the global economy.”
Here are the key takeaways from Davos that underscore the shared responsibility we all have in securing Ukraine’s future.
First, military and economic aid have been, and must remain, at the forefront of our efforts. In partnership with governments, businesses, and financial institutions, we’ve created a robust ecosystem that has kept Ukraine standing. This support drives recovery and development, particularly in defense technology, and it has allowed Ukraine’s economy to stay afloat in the face of unrelenting war. As “The Economist” rightly put it, Ukraine is winning the economic war — an accomplishment that belongs to all of us.
Second, sanctions and blocking Russia’s shadow fleet have long been vital tools in the fight against Russian aggression. U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments in Davos about Russian oil are a step in the right direction. The numbers back it up: According to the Kyiv School of Economics, Russia has lost a staggering $78.5 billion in oil export revenue since December 2022 due to sanctions.

The oil tanker Eagle S is anchored near Kilpilahti port in Porvoo, Gulf of Finland, on Jan. 13, 2025. (Vesa Moilanen / Lehtikuva / AFP)
The private sector must play its part too. I call on business leaders worldwide to withdraw from the Russian market. Such actions are as effective as sanctions, delivering a direct blow to the Russian economy. The idea that business is somehow apolitical is outdated — businesses are powerful forces that can shape outcomes, for better or for worse.
And third, a strong economy supports a strong military. That’s why our vision for a self-sufficient economy is grounded in five key steps: expanding export logistics, restoring energy capacities, confiscating Russia’s sovereign assets to support Ukraine’s recovery, investing in the defense industry and Ukrainian companies, and encouraging the return of Ukrainians to Ukraine.
While the Ukrainian government has focused on industrial policy — contributing to economic growth even in the third year of full-scale war, with a projected 3.6% growth rate in 2024 — private companies have an equally critical role in shaping long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
Security measures have already shown their value. Take the Black Sea Grain Corridor, for example. Initially blocked by Russia, the corridor was only reopened when we secured military protection for the routes and installed air defense systems to safeguard export infrastructure. This allowed Ukrainian exports to grow by 15% last year.
To kickstart Ukraine’s large-scale reconstruction and stabilize the global economy, Ukraine needs long-term security guarantees. This is not just a Ukrainian issue — it’s a global responsibility, one shared by Ukraine, its partners, and the private sector.
Editor’s Note: The opinions expressed in the op-ed section are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Kyiv Independent.

Davos heard Ukraine’s call, but will Europe seize the opportunity?
“We’re at yet another turning point,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told global leaders in Davos last week, “which some see as a problem for Europe, but others call a chance. Europe must establish itself as a strong global player, as an indispensable player.” Zelensky is completely right.…

10 November 2024
A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS
For 249 years, Marines have served as our Nation's sentinels of freedom. As we celebrate our Corps' birthday this year, I encourage all Marines to reflect on our legacy forged in blood on battlefields since 1775, and to rededicate ourselves to carrying that legacy untarnished into the future. Collectively, we who wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor have an obligation to uphold the ideals of self-discipline, warfighting proficiency, professionalism, and personal conduct that define what it means to be a Marine. I know you are all up to the task.
Twenty years ago this month, Marines fought and won the Second Battle of Fallujah, a brutal, grinding house to house fight, whose victory ultimately paved the way for the stabilization of the Republic of Iraq. Often in Iraq there were no true front lines, and by necessity, Fallujah was a battle in which every Marine fought, demonstrating once again our cornerstone philosophy that Every Marine is a Rifleman.
Our history bears witness to Marines of all stripes picking up their rifles and fighting for Corps and Country when the call came. From Wake Island to the Chosin Reservoir to Khe Sanh to Camp Bastion, every Marine fought. Our future battles will be no different. Our rear areas will be as vulnerable as our front lines and every Marine from our infantry battalions to our aviation squadrons to our headquarters and support elements will have to stand-to when called.
Preparing for the threats of the future requires the same exceptional standards and ironclad discipline that are the hallmarks of our Corps. Twenty years ago in Fallujah, our predecessors staunchly adhered to these virtues, earned our Nation's trust, and ensured the U.S. Marine Corps would remain the most feared fighting force in the world. It is our sworn duty to uphold those standards and stay true to our Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Though technology and equipment change, the Marine Corps' culture of excellence must not. The road ahead is far from certain, but our ethos will never change — Every Marine a Rifleman and Everyone Fights.
As I've said before, it is the honor of my lifetime to be a Marine and serve as your Commandant. I'm proud to stand alongside each of you, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for our Corps. When I travel to visit Marines here at home and deployed around the globe, I find absolute confidence that this generation of Marines has what it takes to uphold our Corps' legacy and prevail in any conflict we face. Happy Birthday, Marines!
