“Tickaroo’s SXSW Line-Up”
**Howdy partner! **
Here in Austin, TX there is a “new show” in town. Even if SXSW isn’t exactly new – it will be celebrating its 30th instalment this year – all the exciting performances, films and speakers certainly keep it fresh and young. It is definitely an event that you just can’t miss! Our own travels to SXSW all began at Expo Milano in 2015. As a part of the Bavarian Delegation in Milan, we were then invited to participate in SXSW at the German Haus or Bavarian Day. With an interactive photo booth concept and a livecast of the event, we quickly made many new friends and connections. This year we are looking forward to heading to Austin in Lufthansa’s FlyingLab and are once again proud to be part of the Bavarian Delegation. If you are also one of the lucky event goers but you don’t know where to begin (and how can you with so many good choices), we have narrowed down the playing field a bit. Here are our top picks for interesting and informative events and discussions.

The Frankenstein Athlete
Genetics and sports: never has the future of sports seemed more like a plot from your favourite sci-fi novel. As science progresses, so too does our understanding of how to use it to manipulate our genetic make-up to gain a controversial advantage. Two panels will be discussing different ways in which science toes the line between training and cheating. While the first panel explores better ways to train a person (and their brain), the second raises more of an ethical debate with regard to genetic manipulation. Both panels raise serious concerns, all of which are certain to lead to stimulating discussions.
Fans and their gadgets
Although these aren’t necessarily posted in any specific order, we were certainly impressed with the write-up for Do Stadium Fans Even Matter Anymore? Led by Claire Lewis (Lewica Ltd.) and Taylor Bloom (SportTechie) the discussion will centre around how fans engage with their favourite teams and how leaders in the sports industry must learn to bridge the gap between traditional viewing and technology in order to survive. As demonstrated by Tickaroo, its Livecast and especially its new ON.AIR feature, there are multiple ways to bring the game to the fans and the fans to the game, all that’s missing is that last-minute goal!
Run, (data update), run
Athletes are known for their incredible work ethic and are often told to give 110%. What would happen though, if coaches were able to analyse the data and judge to what degree the athlete was performing. Would this help the athletes to train better, help with their game strategy, or simply be too intrusive? Tom Haberstroh’s (ESPN) talk will explore this topic and the pros and cons of wearable tech.
Also examining the relationship between tech and athletes, is a panel discussion that is looking forward towards future sportspeople. How do young athletes, parents and coaches make sure that the next generation of potential sport stars are getting exactly what they need. Thanks to wearables and other scientific advancements, Raising the 21st Century Athlete is comprised of a strong mix of speakers representing different areas of expertise, all with the same goal: strong kids and strong athletes.
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s a drone!
Lights, cameras, tech and action – from start to finish drone races are the antithesis of boring. Nicholas Horbaczewski (CEO Drone Racing League) is presenting this up and coming eSport. Besides addressing the highs and the lows of the sport, other topics will also be addressed, for example the challenges and sky-high expectations that have been set thanks to video games and popular culture. If you’re not yet convinced how thrilling the races are, check it out for yourself!

After all of these engaging discussions, if you are looking to productively unwind a bit, feel free to drop by German Haus. Both Matthew Ulbrich and Thomas Andorfer will be there and if last year’s video is any indication, we can’t wait to see you there!
