How to start your day – Motivational Tips
Tumblr media
'Arise, awake and strive; stop not till your goal is achieved'.
Do you find yourself stuck in a regular cycle waking up tired and unmotivated? Do you think that life is monotonous and there is no excitement in your schedule? This article dives deep into the cognitive reasoning behind how you can become productive and successful in life.
A lot of students and working professionals of the modern-day have a pressing complaint with their lifestyles; Not being fresh and feeling drowsy in the morning.
Studies show that irrespective of sleep cycles and duration, people still feel uninterested and unmotivated. So why does this happen? I want to share a personal anecdote to help envision the actual process.
I remember the times in my life where I had innate motivation to 'nail it'; my first day at an internship, my college football finals, or my annual debating championship. When you further analyze such milestone events in your life, you see that you only care when you have stakes and personal investment.
Boarding schools in India have added benefits such as providing individual attention to each student, better infrastructure in terms of co-curricular activities as compared to day schools and diversity for overall growth of children.
To say, you are motivated about these things because their outcome profoundly influences you. Apply the same formula to life, and then you will find the root issue. It isn't easy to treat life as a stake because of its unpredictability, spontaneity and general long duration. Thus, the only reason you do not wake up motivated to go to school, as you would wake up motivated to go to a basketball game, is because you do not see any immediate casualties. The mind of a person convinces them that a regular day is 'normal' and there is nothing one can 'conquer'. That approach is natural but flawed.
So how do you tackle something biologically embedded into your behaviour? Simple, you cheat your mind and bring it in a state of excited accountability. What does this mean? Well if your mind only gets excited on targets, goals, and accomplishments, then make your 'normal' day into a 'conquered' day. This is much simpler to do than it sounds. For starters, break your long-term goal into short term trackable milestones. This will give you something to fight for every single day. Make a daily task list and track yourself. This will not only keep you motivated and consistent but will also instil discipline. Wake up every day with a goal and remember that no goal is too silly. My brother set a goal to learn one new word every day. Multiply that with 365 days and two years, and this 'silly' goal led him to secure a brilliant score on his SAT's.
Bottom line, I have not changed anything except your approach. Your long-term goal is still intact, but the difference is that now you live that achievement piece by piece every day and thus wake up to motivated. This is, however, just a baby step, you will need to plan more goals a day, track them efficiently and reward yourself regularly, but you get the picture.
'Doctors suggest that you need 8 hours of sleep'; how many of you have heard this? This statement was coined over a century ago when there was no internet, no globalization, no industrialization, and no mass media making this a ridiculously incorrect statement. How much you need to sleep is a more introspective question than scientific. Harvard scholars sleep for a mere 3 hours, whereas many investment portfolio managers get a sound 12 hours. Doctors do not recommend either, but both live quite satisfactory and successfully. Hence your sleep schedule should depend on how many hours you think you need to work productively. What is fixed, however, is consistency. Once you plan your sleep schedule, stick to it. If you choose to sleep 6 hours, do that diligently and accustom your mind and body to it. Remember, it's absolutely useless if you sleep very little and do below-par work for the rest of the hours. It is also redundant if you rest a lot and are unable to meet deadlines.
When you wake up in the morning, it is biological for you to be in a state of drowsiness temporarily. Hence, you need to implement some strategies to wake your mind up after you have physically woken up. First, get up and stretch your body in the sunlight; this helps you absorb the energy and freshness of nature. Secondly, try to listen to a positive tune or mixtape; it will set a tone to energize. It is quintessential to perform a basic exercise or even yoga before starting your work. This ensures that your body and mind are coherent and responsive. Having a healthy breakfast with fruits is also important as it gives you a good energy resource to bank on for the rest of the day.
In a nutshell, don't blame science what may seem a rather biological problem, it's all about attitude, approach and mindset when it comes to motivating yourself and treating each day as the one you would like to seize, Carpe Diem!
