Bluetooth SIG mesh is a Bluetooth technology owned by Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). It was launched in July 2017. Generally, it can be defined as computer networking that allows communication between many-to-many communiqué devices.

Characteristics of Messages Relayed In Bluetooth Mesh

1. All messages relayed must begin with an opcode as shown below;

2. All messages have the sender and receiver addresses.

3. They all have sequence numbers which are essential as they defend the network against all attacks.

4. They all have time to live (TTL).

5. They are all encrypted and authenticated using the following keys;

· Network keys

· Application keys

6. Each message sent should not exceed 384 bytes. However, most of the messages relayed are 11 bytes long.

BLE Mesh Communication Protocols

Bluetooth mesh uses a variety of protocol stacks during communication. The core stacks are divided into two;

· Host stack, which deals with high-level data and acts as a segment of the operating system.

· Controller stack

However, the most important component of the Bluetooth communication protocol is the Generic Access Profile (GAP). This element of Bluetooth mesh technology manages the scanning and broadcasting processes of all Bluetooth devices.

6. Replay attack protection

A replay attack is where an eavesdropper captures a message being transmitted and retransmits it later to make the recipient to do something that the invader is not allowed to do. The Bluetooth mesh security helps in preventing such episodes.

7. Trashcan attack protection

When faulty nodes are removed from the network, they can no longer use their network keys as the remaining nodes are issued with new keys. This helps in preventing trashcan attacks.

8. Secure device provisioning

The process of adding more nodes and devices to Bluetooth mesh network is safe and secure.

What Does A Wireless Mesh Network Do?

A wireless mesh network is a network device formed by several wireless radios with software that helps them work harmoniously without coordination. This technology is different from traditional networks, as it has no central coordination or computer to handle all the network traffic. Instead, the devices communicate with each other easily and efficiently.

The wireless mesh network has wirelessly connected routers, which act as wireless access points for its customers, such as smartphones and laptops.

These routers are connected via a backbone that resembles a mesh-like structure. For the customers to send or receive information, this mesh-like backbone network is used.  The routers also help these clients to access the network.

To connect to the internet, an external network, you must connect some routers to a wired network. These routers help in acting as gateways.

Types of Wireless Mesh Network

This technology is divided into two topologies;

· Partially-connected mesh network

· Fully-connected mesh network

Fully-connected is the one that creates a mesh-like pattern of network connections. In this technology, all nodes are connected to each other and communicate harmoniously. Also, the nodes must cooperate as they distribute information.

In partially-connected technology, some nodes will be inter-connected, and they communicate through hubs and switches.

The figure below shows how a wireless mesh network works in the process of sharing the internet.

   As you can see in the figure above, only one node is required to be wired to the internet in a wireless mesh network. It then shares an internet connection with all the nodes near it wirelessly. So, all these nodes require a power supply like solar panels or batteries but not wires to function outdoors.

Do Mesh Networks Really Work?

Yes. Mesh networks function perfectly in connecting the entire city to a network. It does this through wireless, reliable, and existing technology.

Unlike traditional networks, which rely on wired technology to connect users, wireless mesh networks rely on several wireless mesh nodes to connect users in a whole city to a network.

Advantages of Mesh Network

1. It’s Scalable

Every node in the mesh network acts as a router. It’s, therefore, not necessary for additional routers. So, you can conveniently increase the size of your network, depending on your needs.

For instance, if you want to add some desktops and smartphones to a meeting room, you can do it easily. The best part is the added gadgets will connect to the network automatically.

You can also add light sources to your conference room or other additional offices quickly as you control the whole network system without requiring extra management.

2. Can Easily Resist Problems

Another advantage of a mesh network is its self-healing capability. If one node stops functioning or loses the signal, it doesn’t affect the entire networking process. Other nodes can easily complete the mesh as the failed node heals itself.

The reason behind this healing is the capability of each node to send, receive, and translate information. The redundancy created in the process helps in keeping the nodes running even if one of them fails.

3. It’s Affordable

Generally, mesh networks use a few wires. This means that the installation cost is low. So, even if you want to set up a network that can cover a large area, you can easily afford it.

4. It’s Easy to Add A Range

You can easily add a range that you want your mesh network to cover. You simply do this by adding more nodes or connecting some of your nodes to gateways.

5. It’s Convenient

Mesh networks are suitable where there are no Ethernet wall connections. For instance, if you have a concert in an outdoor venue, this network is more appropriate. It’s also convenient in almost all transportation settings.

6. It’s Self Configuring

As said earlier, you can increase the number of nodes of a mesh network if you want to increase the range it’s covering. In this case, the added nodes don’t require any network administrator to adjust the network for them to work.

The network incorporates them automatically as they are self-configuring.

7. It’s Easy To Install

Normally, the nodes in mesh networks are easy to install and uninstall. This makes it easy to change the coverage area, depending on your requirements.

Disadvantages of a Mesh Network

1. Complicated Initial Network Set up

Setting up a mesh network from scratch can be very complicated and tedious. Establishing the perfect place to set up each node is also complex and time-consuming as you have to install them where there’ll be no latency problems. But once you’re done with the initial set up, it’s easy and quick to add more nodes.

2. Consumes More Power

Each node in a mesh network acts as both transmitter and receiver. For this reason, the nodes strain as they try to play both roles. So, for them to operate effectively, more power is needed.

This might be a small issue for large nodes as they are wired to the electrical system directly, unlike the small battery-powered ones.

3. Latency Problems

Latency is the time a message consumes to move from each node to the gateway. This time can affect the entire mesh networking setup. You can easily improve the latency issue by using a mesh network with additional memory, power, and bandwidth.

However, for low-power, wide-area networks, latency becomes a major problem for mesh networks.

4. Complicated Workload

Mesh networks are highly scalable and require adding more nodes depending on the needs. Complications arise when you have latency problems, and you’re required to add more nodes to help solve the problem. The entire network planning becomes more difficult as you have to deploy various equipment types for the network to function properly.

What Makes Bluetooth Mesh Different

The Bluetooth mesh makes home automation better than other wireless networks, especially WI-FI. Even though you can turn on your house power with your smartphone or laptop with WI-FI, Bluetooth mesh offers a better experience.

Response To Dangers of Underage Binge-Drinking Among Universities

It’s no secret that binge-drinking on college campuses, especially among underage drinkers, is pervasive and destructive. Binge-drinking is defined as having “5 or more drinks on a single occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women,” according to NIADA, the National Institute on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. As expressed in the media through newspapers, documentaries, and on social networking websites, excessive alcohol consumption isn’t only unhealthy for the person consuming the alcohol, but it also puts others at risk for accidental injury, detrimental decisions, and sexual assault. Below, we’ll take a look at some highly publicized cases of calamitous underage drinking and explore what school are doing to combat the issue.

In September 2016, the University of Pennsylvania off-campus fraternity names ‘OZ’ came under fire as a product of a party invitation email blast sent out to a number of Penn freshmen women. The email advised recipients to wear ‘something tight’ and encouraged the girls to act promiscuously through implication, as well as stating the intended service of alcohol to inevitably underage freshmen.

Upon receipt of this email, Penn students began to protest rape culture, plastering copies of this email throughout campus, along with the superimposed words, “THIS IS WHAT RAPE CULTURE LOOKS LIKE. WE ARE WATCHING.”

In response to issues like this one, and in an effort to keep students as safe as possible while partying on campus, Penn established a task force in February of 2017. The task force requires student groups, both affiliated and unaffiliated with the university, to register their events with the school’s office of Alcohol and other Drugs office (AOD). (VPUL, 2019) Once registered, third-party bartenders and bouncers are hired. The bartenders will only serve beer and wine at the event, and students are carded at the door, able to enter at 18-years-old, but only given an ‘of age’ wristband or hand stamp at 21-years old or over. If this policy isn’t followed, alcohol monitors or the Penn Police may approach the event and shut it down.

Northwest of the University of Pennsylvania at Penn State, drinking-related danger has plagued State College, PA. Following the well-known tragic fraternity hazing-related death of Timothy Piazza, which landed 3 affiliated men in prison, (Holcombe, 2019) the university outlines its guidelines of alcohol use and attempts to minimize future risk. Their policies state that alcohol is prohibited in all on-campus housing units, regardless of the possessor’s age. The Interfraternity Council also made the decision to contract with a third-party security company called St. Moritz to monitor parties, an entity present just minutes before Piazza fell down the fraternity’s stairs to clear the scene of the party. (Flanagan, 2017)

At Penn State, undergraduates must register all parties, and none of these parties may involve alcohol since it’s understood that most attendees at an undergraduate party will be underage.

Stanford University has implemented a policy which students colloquially dubbed ‘open door policy’ for the control of underage and binge-drinking and associated dangers on campus.

Stanford also recently dealt with a scandal related to excessive alcohol consumption with the assault and attempted rape of an intoxicated female student by student Brock Turner.

Stanford’s policy recognizes the fact that students will drink, and attempts to encourage them to do so responsibly. At Stanford, students must register parties, with deadlines of 3-30 days in advance depending on the type of party or event. Under no circumstances, even among graduate students all over the age of 21, may shots be served at a party. Undergraduate parties may only serve beer, wine, and other pre-packaged or pre-portioned alcoholic drinks, for example, wine coolers. (Stanford Office of Alcohol Policy and Education, 2019)

Stanford’s Office of Alcohol Policy and Education also outlines a number of prohibited behaviors related to partying. As stated, Stanford complies with federal law, prohibiting the consumption or service of alcohol by or to someone under the age of 21. Drinking games, hazing, and other activities that promote a high rate of alcohol consumption are not allowed. Additionally, all sober monitors must stay completely sober thought the event. (Stanford Office of Alcohol Policy and Education, 2019)

Stanford’s open door policy is similar to that of Washington University St. Louis. A Wash U. student interviewed for another article pertaining to the issue stated that, “‘The policy encourages freedom and trust between students and authorities.’” (Mariwala, 2015)

“Michigan’s Greek system promised to self-police,” reported the New York Times in an investigative piece pertaining to the issues of underage drinking. (NYT, 2016) The university has banned the sale of alcohol in and around the football stadium as a safety measure, as well as banning handles of hard liquor and kegs. Sober monitors much hold a certain ratio to other intoxicated guests at a party, and if any of these rules are broken, the university may intervene and students are subject to the implications of illegal activity. (NYT, 2016)

Another more hands-off measure used by universities such as Frostburg University involves social medial campaigning. The university has been involved in “sending regular emails and putting up posters for a campaign it calls "Reality Check." One says: “'Not Everyone's Doing It: 36 percent of FSU students reported they did not drink alcohol in the last 30 days.’" Another shows a young woman bent over a toilet, mouth open, with the caption, “'Glamorous, Isn't It?’” (Ludden, 2014)

Despite all of these various measures to help and encourage students to follow the law and lead healthier lives, the parties rage on, and risks to manage are inevitable.

In response to this reality, one constant among the schools listed above is the provision of detailed outlines of university and/or state enforced regulations related to medical amnesty.

Different schools involve this legal protection differently in conversation, but the bottom line is, medical amnesty removes a perceived barrier in calling for help when a student or their friend is intoxicated and demands medical attention. Students often feel concerned about legal

implications such as receiving a minor in possession charge if alerting emergency services about an intoxicated underage drinker or drug-user, and this policy removes that fear in an effort to protect students.

Stipulations to this law include potential legal implications for someone in possession of copious amounts of drugs, or as the University of Michigan’s University Health Service outlines,  the student is only legally protected “when the amount of the drug possessed is sufficient only for personal use.”

However, at the end of the day, this measure enables students to feel more comfortable and able to seek medical attention where necessary, and removing the concern of getting into legal trouble is a step that university and state officials alike believe will help promote healthier and safer campuses.

Sekai Project recently added dates and times to their schedule at the upcoming Animation on Display 2017 at Santa Clara Marriott in Santa Clara, CA from March 18th to March 19th. A list of merchandise they plan to sell at their booth #D18 can be found on their blog.

Sekai Project will also bring four guests. Look forward to meeting Kio Nachi (The Fruit of Grisaia, Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue, etc.), p19 (KARAKARA, Himawari!!, etc.), pan (Sakura no Reply, Ama Koi Syrups, etc.), and suimya (Ama Koi Syrups, Yomegami, etc.) at AOD!

Each artist will take up to 4 commission orders, which will be in black & white only. You can either request a character/illustration that the artist has done in their previous original works, or let them choose what to draw. Every year during the first week of October the Mississippi Gulf Coast is filled to overflowing with 8,000 hot rods of every description. From sunrise to well beyond sunset the cruising never stops. This year evening cruising was enhanced by a beautiful full moon with mild temperatures and a soft coastal breeze.

However, it seems Mother Nature had a different plan this year with hurricane Nate bearing down on the Gulf Coast. The threat of heavy rain and high winds shortened the event; rather than ending on Sunday, October 8, the event came to an end on Saturday morning. However perfect cruising weather was the order of the day for the entire week and this huge block party continued well into Friday evening. While the stiff breeze was a precursor of things to come, the storm would not arrive until late Saturday, providing all the cruisers ample time to head home. While there was some flooding and damage after we left, we were pleased to hear the storm damage was nothing like major hurricanes in the past.

While there were 7,957 registered participants this year, there is no doubt if the weather had cooperated Cruisin’ the Coast would have easily topped the 8,000 mark. Ford has always taken great pride in building reliable cars, and that extends to the hot rod world as well. It seems Ken had a total of 41 miles on the car when he left home in Spring Hill, Florida, driving to Cruisin’ the Coast in Biloxi, Mississippi. By the time he got back home the car had over 1,000 trouble-free miles on the odometer; you gotta love a well-built old Ford.

The total package takes you back to a simpler time, a time when GIs were busy resuming the good life. The vintage feeling is so strong, when you turn on the Alpine stereo you almost expect to hear Guy Lombardo, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, or Patti Page singing one of the hit songs of the day. All that and more is why we chose Ken Smith’s 1950 Ford convertible for our Best Ford in a Ford award at the 2017 Cruisin’ the Coast event.

The simple good looks of a 1950 Ford shine through the 1953 Caddy Artisan Ochre yellow paint. A subtle lowering, factory foglights, and rare 1952 Ford Crestline bumper guards add up to a fine, mild, custom look.

Much like the exterior, the inside focuses on improving rather than changing things. Full Spice Tan leather is sewn in traditional rolls and pleats, while square weave carpet and the LimeWorks steering wheel add a touch of class.

Ah yes, remember when cars came with a fullsize spare tire? Leather and carpet now cover what was once covered with a simple rubber mat. The Bud box stores tools and cleaning supplies.

Underhood a 5.0 Mustang motor breathes through a K&N filter and TrickFlow intake. MSD ignition and Ford Racing stainless headers help performance. To the untrained eye this may look like a stock engine bay, but notice the nicely filled and finished firewall.

The rear view is pure ’50s flavor with another set of those rare bumper guards in service. All-original trim has been repaired and polished or sent off for fresh chrome.

The devil is in the details. How about these cool side-view mirrors that appear to be stock but have built-in LED turn signal indicators? They flash when the turn signals are on and disappear when not in use.

Speaking of LED lighting the stock bezels hold much brighter than original LED lights. Factory optional backup lights remain in service. Note the perfect decklid gaps, this is one fine automobile.

Tech Tip: Six-Cylinder Fan Belt Squeal Do you have an A/C system on your six-cylinder engine that runs the alternator from a groove of the compressor? If it squeals when the engine is first started, allow the alternator to charge for a minute or so before turning on the A/C so there won’t as much load on the fan belt.

Bruce Kadel | Urbana, OH | 1956 Ford Mainline The Ford Mainline was the base model for 1956; it was also known as “the business coupe.” “Barebones” best describes the model as there was no back seat, glovebox, radio, or roll-down back windows. The clean, simple look continues with a Mustang II IFS, a 302 Ford motor, and Lokar-shifted AOD. Concessions to comfort include Vintage Air, a hidden stereo, and the rolled and pleated seat.

Kevin Phillips | Columbus, MS | 1940 Ford pickup This 1940 combines classic with contemporary. While the Coker wide whites are traditional, the LS2/4L60 combination under the hood is modern, as is the two-tone paint scheme. The truck rides on a Total Cost Involved frame with Pro-shocks on all four corners. Inside, rolled and pleated brown leather combines with Dakota Digital gauges in the stock bezel. An ididit column and shifter complete the package.

David Pritchett | Meridian, MS | 1933 Plymouth Coupe The House of Color Tangelo paint brought us in for a closer look so we could study the great fabrication on this coupe. Up front a Super Bell axle and four-bar mount to the custom frame and a 9-inch Ford rear mounts Goodyear-wrapped Billet Specialties wheels. A Chevy 350/700-R4 propels this Plymouth. Inside the cream leather, VDO gauges and Vintage Air combine with hand-formed dash details for a great look.

Floyd Dutton | Harrah, OK | 1958 Edsel Roundup This is one sneaky Edsel. Did you notice the top has been chopped, the B-pillars are canted, the missing door handles (once part of the side trim) are missing, and the entire roofskin has been replaced with a lower profile 1959 unit? Fatman dropped spindles, a 302 Ford motor and AOD trans, and Vintage Air have made the 65,000 miles of travel a pleasure. A 1957 Ford dashboard holds modified Mustang gauges.

Harold Catlett | Knoxville, TN | 1933 Ford Tudor sedan This timeless Tudor relies on the inherent good looks of the 1933 Ford, combined with a mild top chop, shaved door handles and mile-deep black paint over laser-straight panels. The hot rod stance is complements of a Total Coast Involved Engineering chassis and a great “rubber-rake.” A 502-inch big-block Chevy provides motivation while bright red leather combines with Vintage Air and Classic Instruments to complete the interior package.

Gary Clark | Dothan, AL | 1954 Chevy 210 The key to a great custom is often restraint. This Chevy custom features added grille teeth, a one-piece hood, frenched headlights, and a shaved decklid with frenched taillights. Factory skirts, 1957 Caddy caps, and Diamondback wide whites complete the look. Inside a 1959 Chevy dash is filled with Classic Instruments and Vintage Air, while under the hood a traditionally dressed, Holley-fed, 350 Chevy provides power.

Don Sasser | Atlantic Beach, FL | 1939 Ford standard woodie In 1939 Ford offered both a Deluxe and Standard version of the station wagon. This Standard model now rolls on Southern Rods & Parts Mustang II front suspension with an 8.8 Ford 2018 Explorer rear. Wire wheels and wide whites from Coker Tire add to the classic good looks, while inside flawlessly restored wood combines with leather seats. A 4.6 Ford motor and AOD tranny keep this woodie all Ford.

Mark Wall | Madison, MS | 1937 Chevrolet pickup This old hauler rides on IFS with QA1 shocks and QA1 coilovers out back for a comfortable ride and perfect stance. The body remains original and Mark’s wife fondly refers to the unique color as “Vomit.” We’ll just go with brown. Inside is a stunning interior with Vintage Air, Dakota Digital, and ididit column completing the cab. Hauling power comes from a modern LS1 4L60E combination.

Michael Boudreaux | LaPlace, LA | 1941 Willys coupe Starting with a near-perfect 1941 Willys, Michael added a chrome straight axle and a big Pontiac rear to the Willys frame with QA1 shocks on all four corners. Power comes from 348 inches of Mopar power hooked to a 727 tranny. PPG red paint and gold leaf lettering combine with Halibrand wheels to complete the gasser look. Inside is all business with Moon gauges, a rollbar, and Lenco shifter. Yes it’s street legal. Yes, it runs in the 10s.

Ernest Thompson | Louisville, KY | 1937 Ford Club coupe The 1937 Ford Club coupe is a rare car, seeing one chopped is even more unusual. After lowering the lid the remainder of the body remains stock with a painted grille. The coupe rides on a Chassis Engineering IFS up front and leaf spring suspension out back. Underhood, a 350 Chevy engine couples to a 350 tranny. Inside gray leather covers the bucket seats while Classic Instruments monitor the motor and Vintage Air keeps things cool.

LG V30+ launches in India at Rs 44,990; comes with a modified secondary display

LG's much-awaited flagship smartphone of the year, the V30+, was launched in India today at an event in New Delhi.

LG V30+, successor to LG V30, will be available in India December 18 onward via Amazon India.

The premium smartphone was previously launched at LG’s press conference at IFA 2017, Berlin.

LG V30+ comes with a large 6-inch 18:9 OLED FullVision display. The main camera on the rear features an F1.6 aperture that facilitates clearer and brighter shots.

"The second lens in the V30+ dual camera is an upgraded 13MP wide-angle lens," notes the press release. 

LG's new Cine Video mode lets a user take high-quality videos. The camera is capable of zooming in on any subject and not just zoom in on the centre of the frame.

LG V30+ runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Android 7.1.2 Nougat.

The dual-camera smartphone boasts of 16MP Standard Angle and 13MP Wide-Angle rear cameras and 5MP Wide Angle camera in front.

The smartphone is backed by a 3,300 mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support. The handset will be available in two exciting colours - Aurora Black and Cloud Silver. 

On the storage front, the handset comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage which is also expandable to 2TB with the help of a micro-SD card.

The smartphone also features Google Assistant, voice and face recognition and a fingerprint sensor which doubles up as the power button. 

The device is dust resistant and "can be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes without impacting the function," noted the media release. The V30+ also offers wireless charging. 

With respect to the 'second screen' feature, unlike its predecessors, the LG V30+ comes with a modified version. The AOD replaces the Second Screen when the display is off. It provides shortcuts to Quick Tools and Music Player without letting a user switch on the display.

LG V30+ is priced at Rs 44,990 and is set to compete with other flagship competitors in the market like Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5T.

KISS and Ash Williams will meet up when Dynamite Entertainment release the first issue of KISS/ARMY OF DARKNESS in February 2018. The new mini-series will be written by Chad Bowers and Chris Sims with art from Ruairi Coleman. The first issue will have multiple covers with Kyle Strahm, Goni Montes, and Ken Haeser each handling a cover. And since our first story was set back at Alan Shepard High, we’re looking forward to showing him some things that you can’t learn in school. At its second-ever privately held Made By Google event in San Francisco today, Google took wraps off its second-generation Pixel phone successors namely the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and a slew of revamped accessories. These devices showcase updated designs with some bold tech decisions such as the loss of the headphone jack, a move bound to be controversial in the modern smartphone tech scene.

With Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Google is attempting to disturb the market and acquire switchers from other name brands. The new handsets are packed with the world’s best hardware internals and software features. Like Nexus that came before it and last year’s Pixels, Google brought the house with its new Pixel 2 and didn’t disappoint. It’s not a bad time to consider upgrading to Pixel or any of Google’s new accessories (Daydream View, Google Home Max or Mini, Pixelbook, Google Pixel Buds, Google Clips)  if you have the cash Google demands.

Google has gone big with its Pixel 2 XL, a mammoth device with an Always On Display and a super large screen. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL finally have the IP67 water and dust resistance we noticed was terribly absent on the first-generation Pixels. There are even front-facing speakers where both provide sound output instead of one doing all the work and the other appearing as mere aesthetic. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are both pre-loaded with Android Oreo, the latest system update in the world of Android. The OLED panels return from last year’s models, but this time, we get “squeezable” dual-curve edges that are said to enhance the functionality of these devices. The squeezable edges were a home run with HTC, and we’ll see how they compare to what Google has implemented here on the Pixel 2 models.

A lot of changes Google has made this year are small improvements and refinements on last year’s models. There are some important changes (such as the AOD and IP67 water and dust resistance) that are welcome additions on the ‘Made By Google’ phones that many will appreciate. Take a look at the official photo gallery below and let us know what you think about Google’s 2017 family of devices.

Having a Diverse Friend Circle Aids in Quicker Recovery From Drug Addiction

Time and again, the same thought has been voiced by several writers, poets, authors and celebrities who consider good friends to be a gift of God. Friends can make or mar a person’s life forever. For example, an individual having a friend circle doing drugs will be inevitably drawn into a life of drugs sooner or later. In comparison, someone whose friend circle is not involved in drugs will stay clean.  

In the event that one is somehow drawn into the web of drug abuse, the chances of his or her recovery post detox and therapy depends on how and whom he/she interacts with after the rehab. Past studies indicate that spending more time with friends who are on the road of improvement or are engaged in meaningful activities hastens rehabilitation and chances of living a sober life later on.    

A recent study has reiterated the same. It explored the role of social networks in aiding recovery from addiction and indicates that transition from addiction to sobriety depends on the level of one’s social connectedness. The study was published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology in January 2017, and it raised the question, “Is it me or should my friends take the credit?”

Study findings

The study involved a total of 537 participants comprising 312 women and 257 men aged 15 to 76 years, who were assessed on the basis of a 15-minute Australian Life in Recovery (ALIR) Survey. The questionnaire was designed to find what the respondents experienced during their peak addiction time and what they experienced during their recovery. It was also aimed at assessing their overall quality of life.

The well-being of the participants was judged on the basis of their abstinence from drugs, the time they spent in recovery and their age. More than 80 percent of the participants of the survey had a drug or alcohol abuse problem for the past eight years. The participants’ social network was judged on the basis of:

number of important people;

the proportion of users with alcohol use disorder (AOD) in the social network;

the proportion of people in recovery in the social network;

multiple group membership.

A significant 60 percent of respondents acknowledged that while they were addicted to drugs, their friend circle chiefly constituted of people who were abusing drugs or alcohol. In comparison, a resounding 90 percent of respondents said that once they decided to get sober, the number of those abusing drugs also dropped.

Respondents who indicated that they had a more diverse friend circle experienced a better quality of life. On the contrary, participants with limited social circle indicated a poorer quality of life. The researchers also found that those whose friend circle largely comprised recovering people were more likely to get involved in support programs.

This is the first study to highlight that social circles have a positive role in addiction recovery process. It also stressed on the need to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences and not just those who are sailing in the same boat. This strengthens the social identity and boosts confidence.
