Top 9 EPM Metrics You Should Be Tracking for Better Performance
Effective Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) requires tracking the right metrics to ensure that your business strategies are on target and performance is optimized.
1. Revenue Growth
Revenue growth is a fundamental metric that indicates how well your organization is expanding its top line. Track revenue growth trends over time to assess the effectiveness of your sales strategies, market positioning, and overall business development.
2. Gross Profit Margin
Gross profit margin measures the percentage of revenue remaining after deducting the cost of goods sold (COGS). It provides insight into your business’s cost efficiency and pricing strategy.
3. Operating Expenses Ratio
The operating expenses ratio compares operating expenses to total revenue. This metric helps you evaluate how efficiently your organization is managing its operating costs relative to its revenue. Lower ratios suggest better cost control and operational efficiency.
4. Net Profit Margin
Net profit margin measures the percentage of profit remaining after all expenses, including taxes and interest, have been deducted from revenue. It provides a comprehensive view of your company’s profitability and overall financial health. Monitoring this metric helps you gauge the effectiveness of your overall business strategy.
5. Return on Investment (ROI)
ROI evaluates the profitability of investments relative to their cost. This metric helps assess the success of specific projects, initiatives, or capital expenditures. Tracking ROI ensures that your investments are delivering the expected returns and aligns with your strategic objectives.
6. Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) measures the cost associated with acquiring a new customer. By tracking CAC, you can evaluate the efficiency of your marketing and sales efforts. Lower CAC indicates that you are acquiring customers cost-effectively, which contributes to improved profitability.
7. Customer Lifetime Value (CLV)
Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) estimates the total revenue a customer will generate over their lifetime. This metric helps you understand the long-term value of your customer relationships and assess the effectiveness of your customer retention strategies. Increasing CLV enhances overall profitability.
8. Employee Productivity
Employee productivity metrics assess the output and efficiency of your workforce. High productivity levels often correlate with better organizational performance.
9. Budget Variance
Budget variance measures the difference between budgeted and actual performance. Tracking budget variance helps you identify deviations from financial plans and assess the reasons behind them.
Conclusion
Monitoring these nine EPM metrics provides valuable insights into your organization’s performance and helps drive better decision-making. By focusing on revenue growth, profit margins, operating expenses, ROI, CAC, CLV, employee productivity, and budget variance, you can enhance your strategic planning and operational efficiency.

Tutorial
We then had a tutorial with members of the EPM agency. Our project was still in early stages and quite undeveloped, however we wanted to produce some sort of discount app to help students find local deals. This would help students be more efficient and financially intelligent with their spending. We put together a short presentation with a further developed User Persona, a visual inspiration moodboard and a colour palette.
In the tutorial we were mainly given guidance with further idea generation. I made notes of potential ideas:
Local area info
Updates on travel delays
Could be a fitness-based app?
Work out a clear brand identity and tone of voice
Geo-fencing features?

These are the messages pages I designed. I created the main inbox page along with a saved tab, that we all decided would be useful so that so that users could easily access important conservation. I also designed the messages chat, along with how it would look if a user wanted some guidance on writing a message as this was an important function of the app and also what the review process would look like as after talking to EPM we felt it was necessary in order to help people know if an agency or another creative was a good person to work with or not.

EPM tutorial notes
Once we had a rough idea of what we wanted to create, we had a tutorial with EPM. Who offered us guidance on where to move next. We were encouraged to stick to Freya as our user persona. We were also encouraged to have the main focus of our app be surrounded by the university and consider how the uni could benefit from an app like ours.
A wire frame will be the first step in creating our app. This way we know which pages we need to create. We will need to delegate roles based on people’s strengths so that we can work together to create an app we are all happy with and have all worked on equally.

The Business Case for ESG in the Athletic Footwear Industry
ESG has emerged as the top theme among athletic footwear industry companies to bolster a healthier planet and boost governance. Footwear manufacturers have realized the upsides of aligning with environmentally friendly production methods. Venture capitalists, investors and other stakeholders are emphasizing shoe design, manufacturing and supply chain that conserve energy, reduce negative environmental impacts and are safe for consumers, communities and employees. Recycling of footwear, solid waste recycling, CO2 emission, social responsibility and use of renewable energies could be pronounced to propel ESG performance.
An uptick in ESG adoption and evolving business strategies have encouraged investors to use sustainability as an engine of growth. Investors recognize that companies with sustainable credentials could outperform their rivals and competitors. Companies are banking on recycled sources and carbon-negative foam complementing renewable energy and less material usage.
Key Companies in this theme
• Adidas AG
• ASICS Corporation
• Fila Inc.
• Under Armor, Inc.
• Lotto Sport Italia S.p.A
• New Balance Athletics, Inc.
• Vans, Inc.
• Nike, Inc.
• Puma SE
• Reebok International Ltd.
Environmental Perspective
Sneaker manufacturers are echoing the role played by the dominance of climate change concerns among shareholders and other stakeholders. Forward-looking companies have committed to a more sustainable future as they continue injecting funds into environmentally preferred materials (EPM) and durable design. Notably, New Balance is contemplating sourcing 50% recycled polyester and 100% preferred leather by 2025. It is worth mentioning that recycled polyester helps minimize dependence on fossil fuels, while preferred leather helps reduce environmental impact across the supply chain. It also aims to attain zero waste to landfill in its footwear factories by 2025. Adopting more sustainable options could gain ground as companies commit to ending plastic waste and promote sports shoes made from recycled materials.
Social Perspective
Footwear companies are grappling with rising e-commerce penetration, fast-changing consumer preferences and demand for sustainable product offerings. The need for safe labor practices, workforce diversity, customer engagement and safe working conditions has prompted stakeholders to foster their social profile. In 2021, Adidas adopted a new assessment system to boost a range of KPIs, including training participation and resolution of workers’ grievances. The Germany-based company has solidified its position in promoting fair labor practices. In 2020, the shoe manufacturer bolstered its engagement with Tier 2 suppliers to see that company practices are in line with fair labor practices. In 2021, the company added “equity” to its diversity and inclusion commitment, underpinning its DEI to foster an inclusive workplace.
Is your business one of participants to the Global Athletic Footwear Industry? Contact us for focused consultation around ESG Investing, and help you build sustainable business practices.
Governance Perspective
Transparency, sound corporate governance and risk & opportunity assessment have become invaluable to remaining competitive and enhancing sustainable success. Risk and opportunity management has gained ground to achieve financial goals. For instance, Nike’s Corporate Responsibility, Sustainability & Governance Committee (CRS&G Committee) oversees risks and opportunities, including reviewing investments, policies, activities, and strategies; offering guidance; and monitoring the progress toward and development of its Purpose targets. Prominently, NIKE Global Risk Management has been at the forefront of helping Nike in control and governance processes and build & maintain effective risk management. Amidst receiving flak for lack of DEI advancements, it set a five-year road map in March 2021 to create a diverse and inclusive workforce. The sneaker maker is gearing up to achieve 45% representation of women in leadership positions by 2025.
Incumbent players are cashing in on the rising footfall of sneakers across emerging and advanced economies. The advancements in low-carbon emission materials, design and technologies have led to energy-saving developments. To illustrate, in September 2022, ASICS rolled out a low-carbon emission sneaker with a carbon footprint of 1.95kg of C02e for every pair produced. These trends indicate the global athletic footwear market could witness a 4.9% CAGR by 2030, with a valuation of USD 127.3 billion in 2021. The immensely competitive nature of the sports apparel industry alludes to bullish investments in ESG initiatives.

A Refreshing Increase in Access to the Orbiting Lab
ISS - International Space Station logo. June 15, 2018 A new, simple and cost-effective way to conduct experiments and test technology aboard the International Space Station offers another option to make space more accessible for out-of-this-world research. A partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Space Application Services (SpaceAps) tests a new system for conducting research in space that lowers several barriers, including cost, development time and support. The International Commercial Experiment, or ICE Cubes Service, combines a sliding framework permanently installed in the space station’s Columbus module with “plug-and-play” Experiment Cubes. The easy to install and remove Experiment Cubes come in different sizes and often can be built with commercial off-the-shelf components, significantly reducing the cost and time to develop experiments. A ground model allows for integrated tests to verify all interface requirements and operational procedures.
Image above: Preparation of the experiment cubes for the International Commercial Experiment, or ICE Cubes Service. Image Credit: Space Applications Services. “The idea is to provide fast, direct and affordable access to space for research, technology and education for any organization or customer,” says Hilde Stenuit of SpaceAps, which designed and developed the facility and made it flight-ready for recent delivery to the orbiting laboratory. Following successful validation of the facility, the plan is to send the first batch of experiments using the system to the space station on an upcoming flight. These include a greenhouse used to observe plant growth rate and morphology under different lighting cycles in microgravity, an investigation of the effects of microgravity on bacteria in order to determine the feasibility of using the microorganisms to produce methane, and a kaleidoscope activated from the ground as a dynamic interactive art event. SpaceAps, which has more than 30 years of experience developing and coordinating experiments for ESA research, provides service support to users of ICE Cubes. Researchers can monitor and control their orbiting Experiment Cubes in near real-time, from their own facilities, using the complimentary mission control software provided by SpaceAps.
Image above: The sliding framework permanently installed in the Columbus module for “plug-and-play” Experiment Cubes. Image Credit: Space Applications Services. Ice Cubes Service plans to offer rides on launches approximately every four months, allowing experiments to run for shorter or longer time periods, an important feature for potential commercial users. Use of the system includes astronaut time and expert advice. “There are many benefits of doing research without the influence of gravity,” Stenuit says. “Removing gravity unveils effects not previously observed or not observable on Earth, allowing research that cannot possibly be done in terrestrial laboratories.” ICE Cubes reduces the preparation time for launch and offers users one point of contact and a simple, fixed pricing policy.
Image above: An Experiment Cube installed in the ICE Cubes Facility (ICF) in the Columbus European Physiology Module (EPM) rack. Image Credit: NASA. The system supports both fundamental and applied research in a wide range of disciplines, from pharmaceutical development to experiments on stem cells, radiation, and microbiology, fluid sciences and more. It provides the opportunity to conduct testing and validation of space technologies and processes in a true space environment. Because ICE Cubes can accommodate free-floating experiments in the ESA Columbus module, it can even be used to test guidance, navigation and docking equipment. The system also can support education experiments and demonstrations to inspire future generations of scientists and explorers. In short, ICE Cubes removes many barriers that limit access to space, providing more people access to flight opportunities. An international partnership of the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada, the space station facilitates growth of a robust commercial market in low-Earth orbit, operating as a microgravity laboratory for scientific research and technology demonstrations under conditions not available on Earth. Do you communicate like a broken telephone?
My telephone seems to always be broken but I am working on getting it fixed! I have to admit that the one area I struggle the most with in life is communication. What is my biggest communication challenge? I have a disability which impacts my ability to communicate effectively. I struggle with organizing my own thoughts which means both verbal and written communication are very difficult for me. I also have a great deal of difficulty with social cues which impacts my ability to pick up on and interpret non-verbal communication. My disability also impacts my ability to listen effectively. I have to really focus and concentrate to avoid distraction. All of this of course has an impact on my confidence which makes public speaking for me even more of a challenge than it is for the average person. I have tried many different strategies over the years to help with one or all of these challenges. When it comes to public speaking or delivering presentations I have to practice, practice, and practice. I practice on my own but I could also practice in front of the mirror or with another person. The better I know the content the easier it is to deliver. I could record myself and re-watch it to see where I need to improve (MindTools, n.d.). I could also start speaking out more when I am around others, just to gain more confidence in my ability to get my ideas across. To help with my listening I make a conscientious effort to maintain eye contact and I am initiating the conversation I try to do so in a quiet environment. Two strategies to help me articulate my thoughts on paper would be to have a scribe or use a graphic organizer (Shub, 2017). These are tactics I have used most of my school life and it has been very helpful. If no one is available I could always speak and record me ideas and then write them down when I play back, or I could use voice to text software and have it do the work for me. Then, once I do have my ideas down I can have someone proof-read for me and identify gaps. In my opinion it is better to communicate sad or bad information orally and ideally face-to-face. This gives you the opportunity to get immediate feedback, both verbal and non-verbal. Bibliography MindTools. (n.d.). Better Public Speaking – Becoming a Confident, Compelling Speaker.
