The Lonely Hearts Killers
The first half of the gruesome pair was Raymond Martinez Fernandez. He was born on December 17, 1914 in Hawaii to Spanish parents. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. As a teenager, he went to work on his uncle’s farm in Spain, married a local woman in Spain, named Encarnacion Robles, at the age of 20, and had four children, all of whom he abandoned after his later injury.
After serving in Spain's Merchant Marine and then British Intelligence during World War II, Fernandez decided to seek work. Shortly after boarding a ship bound for the US, a steel hatch fell on him, fracturing his skull and injuring his frontal lobe. The damage caused by this injury may well have affected his social and sexual behavior. Upon his release from a hospital, Fernandez stole some clothing and was subsequently imprisoned for a year, during which time his cellmate converted him to a belief in voodoo and black magic. He later claimed black magic gave him irresistible power and charm over women.
Martha Beck was born on May 6, 1920 in Milton, Florida. Allegedly due to a glandular problem, she was massively overweight and underwent puberty prematurely. At her trial, she claimed to have been raped by her brother. She went on to claim that, when she had told her mother what happened, her mother had beaten her, claiming that Martha was responsible. After Martha finished school, she studied nursing but had trouble finding a job due to her weight. She initially became an undertaker's assistant and prepared female bodies for burial. She then quit that job and moved to California, where she worked in an Army hospital as a nurse. While living in California as a hospital nurse, she eventually became pregnant. She tried to convince the father to marry her, but he refused and he tried to commit suicide over being with her. Single and pregnant, she returned to Florida.
Martha told people the father was a serviceman she had married, later claiming he had been killed in the Pacific Campaign. The town mourned her loss, and the story was published in the local newspaper. Shortly after her daughter was born, she became pregnant again by a Pensacola bus driver named Alfred Beck. They married quickly and divorced six months thereafter, and she gave birth to a son.
Unemployed and the single mother of two young children she placed a lonely hearts ad in 1947, which Raymond Fernandez answered.
Fernandez visited Beck and stayed for a short time; she told everyone they were to be married. He returned to New York City while she made preparations in Milton, Florida, where she lived. When she was abruptly fired from her job, she packed up and arrived on his doorstep in New York. Fernandez enjoyed the way she catered to his every whim but didn’t like her children and he ordered them to be taken away, which she did, abandoning them and handing them over to the Salvation Army and when he learned she had left her children for him, he thought it was a sign of an unconditional love. He confessed his criminal enterprises to Beck.
She posed as Fernandez's sister, giving him an air of respectability. Their victims, feeling more secure knowing there was another woman in the house, often agreed to stay with the pair. Beck also convinced some victims that she lived alone and that her "brother" was only a guest. Beck was extremely jealous and went to great lengths to make sure Fernandez and his "intended" never consummated their relationship. When he did have sex with a woman, Beck subjected both to her violent temper.
In 1949, the pair committed the three murders for which they later were convicted. Janet Fay, 66, became engaged to Fernandez and went to stay at his Long Island apartment. When Beck caught her in bed with Fernandez, she brutally attacked Fay's head with a hammer in a murderous rage. Fernandez then strangled Fay. Fay's family became suspicious when she disappeared, and Fernandez and Beck fled.
Beck and Fernandez travelled to Byron Center Road in Wyoming Township, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids, where they met and stayed with Delphine Downing, a 28-year-old widow with a two-year-old daughter. On February 28, Downing became agitated, and Fernandez gave her sleeping pills to calm her. The daughter witnessed Downing's resulting stupor and began to cry, which enraged Beck. Panicked, Beck choked the child but didn't kill her. Fernandez thought Downing would become suspicious if she saw her bruised daughter, so he shot the unconscious woman. The couple then stayed for several days in Downing's house. Again enraged by the daughter's crying, Beck drowned her in a basin of water. They buried the bodies in the basement, but suspicious neighbors reported the Downings' disappearances, leading the police to arrive at the door on March 1, 1949 and arrest Beck and Fernandez
Fernandez quickly confessed. The pair vehemently denied committing 17 murders that were attributed to them, and Fernandez tried to retract his confession, saying he made it only to protect Beck.
Their trial was sensationalized, with lurid tales of sexual perversity. Newspaper reporters described Beck's appearance with derision, and she wrote protesting letters to the editors. Fernandez and Beck were convicted of Janet Fay's murder—the only one for which they were tried—and sentenced to death. They were executed on March 8, 1951.

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 14 October • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1711, Woodes Rogers completed his circumnavigation of the globe. Woodes Rogers was approached by family friend William Dampier, who proposed a privateering expedition against the Spanish, to which Rogers agreed. He would command two ships, the Duke and Duchess, while captaining the first with Dampier as his sailing master. The voyage was rife with problems, from desertions and attempted mutinies, to supply shortages, sickness, and run-ins with the East India Company. Nonetheless, they continued sailing westward. While stopping for provisions at Juan Fernandez, they famously rescued the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk, who had been left behind over four years prior - on Dampier’s last expedition, coincidentally. Off the coast of Mexico, the privateers would capture the rich Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacion y Desengaño. Rogers was wounded in the face during the battle, and would carry a scar there for the remainder of his life. Later, during a battle in the Pacific, he would lose his brother. Rogers and his privateers would limp into Erith, a small, quiet, riverside village downstream from London, ending their three year long expedition. Rogers would later conclude his account of the voyage by stating, “This day at 11 of the clock, we and our consort and prize got up to Eriff, where we came to an anchor, which ends our long and fatiguing voyage.” . . . . . #piratehistory #piratehistorypodcast #piratesofthecaribbean #privateer #circumnavigation #pirates #pirateship #privateers #historyofpirates #piratemuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/CVA5iMmlNiQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Campanario De Dumaguete The Campanario de Dumaguete was built upon one of the four original massive watchtowers that parish priest Don Jose Manuel Fernandez De Septien built in the 1760s to discourage Moros from Pillaging the town. The two layers which are now known as the belltower or the campanario were added during the administration of Fray Juan Felix De La Encarnacion in 1867. #instagram #philippines #wheninphilippines🇵🇭 #TrackThatTravel #thebrokebackpacker #IamATraveler #travelwithme #Makurootography #WhenInDumaguete #Dumaguete #Travel #Vacation #solotravelingisfun #DumagueteCity #DumaGeTmE #DumagetMe2017 #Gala #SoloTravel #Solo #SoloTraveller #Watchtower #Belltower #Bell #War #Memories #Campanario #1760 #1867 #Past #History (at The Bell Tower in Dumaguete City) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwkgUt2AKHd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1b5k609e6hbbz

MLB roundup: Red Sox clinch playoff spot
The Red Sox became the first team to clinch a postseason berth this season, with pinch hitter Brock Holt’s three-run home run in the seventh inning sending Boston to a 7-2 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.

This is third consecutive trip to the playoffs for the Red Sox, which ties the longest streak in franchise history.
Holt, batting for Sandy Leon in the seventh, hit his fourth homer of the season. He has hit both of Boston’s pinch-hit homers on the year.
Chris Sale started the game for Boston, allowing one hit and hitting a batter while striking out two in one inning. The short stint was planned for his first start since Aug. 12. He went on the disabled list six days later with mild inflammation in his left shoulder.
Braves 4, Giants 1
Mike Foltynewicz became just the seventh major-leaguer this season to throw two complete games, limiting host San Francisco to six hits in Atlanta’s win.
Charlie Culberson hit a two-run home run in the fifth, helping the Braves extend their lead in the National League East to a season-best 6 1/2 games over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Foltynewicz (11-9) came within one out of becoming the first pitcher to throw two shutouts this season. Foltynewicz, who shut out Washington on June 1, walked one and struck out seven Tuesday. Atlanta posted its fourth consecutive win while San Francisco lost its 10th in a row.
Cubs 3, Brewers 0
Jose Quintana fanned seven batters in 6 2/3 scoreless innings, and host Chicago held on for a shutout of Milwaukee.
Chicago increased its lead to two games over Milwaukee in the NL Central with less than three weeks remaining in the regular season. The St. Louis Cardinals also are in the mix as they remained 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs.
Quintana (13-9), who gave up three hits and walked two, matched his single-season high for victories. The left-hander won his third straight decision and allowed two runs or fewer for the fifth outing in a row.
Cardinals 11, Pirates 5
Tyler O’Neill hit a three-run homer and Marcell Ozuna had three RBIs in St. Louis’ blowout win over visiting Pittsburgh.
St. Louis won its third straight, moving to within 1 1/2 games of Milwaukee for the top NL wild-card spot. Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (15-4) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings.
Pittsburgh starter Joe Musgrove (6-9) struck out eight and at one point retired 14 in a row, but he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in six innings. Corey Dickerson drove in two with a single and a double for Pittsburgh, which lost its second in a row.
Twins 10, Yankees 5
Joe Mauer capped a six-run fifth inning with a grand slam, and Minnesota roughed up New York in Minneapolis.
Mauer’s grand slam, the fifth of his career, gave the Twins a 10-1 lead and helped the Twins beat the Yankees for the first time in the last nine meetings, including last season’s American League wild-card game.
Didi Gregorius also hit a grand slam in the sixth and tripled as the Yankees fell to 4-4 on a nine-game road trip. The Yankees saw their lead in the race for the first Al wild card trimmed to two games over the Oakland A’s.
Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 3

Ketel Marte drove in four runs, Zack Greinke pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and Arizona beat Colorado in Denver.
David Peralta homered for the third-place Diamondbacks, who moved within 2 1/2 games of first-place Colorado in the NL West. The Rockies maintained a 1 1/2-game lead on the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers.
Greinke (14-9) allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five in 6 2/3 innings. Yoshihisa Hirano got the last three outs for his first save.
Indians 2, Rays 0
Edwin Encarnacion and Yan Gomes homered, and rookie Shane Bieber picked up his 10th win as Cleveland snapped Tampa Bay’s franchise-record, 12-game home winning streak.
Bieber (10-3) struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just three hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings. He improved to 6-0 in 10 career road starts.
Encarnacion and Gomes each had two hits for Cleveland, which sliced its magic number to three to clinch the AL Central title. Encarnacion’s 30th homer of the season in the sixth extended his streak of seasons with 30 or more home runs and 90 or more RBIs (96) to seven, the longest active stretch in the majors.
Astros 5, Indians 4
Tony Kemp and Tyler White hit two-run homers, Jose Altuve supplied a solo blast, and visiting Houston edged Detroit.
Kemp, Altuve and Yuli Gurriel each had two hits for the Astros, and Josh Reddick scored twice. First-place Houston maintained its three-game lead on the A’s in the AL West.
JaCoby Jones hit a three-run homer for the Tigers, who have lost the first two games of the three-game series. Jordan Zimmermann (7-7) gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings.
A’s 3, Orioles 2
Matt Chapman, Khris Davis and Stephen Piscotty each drove in a run as Oakland defeated host Baltimore in the opener of a three-game series.
The A’s have won five consecutive games. The Orioles have dropped five games in a row.
The Orioles could not do much against Mike Fiers, who went six innings and allowed one run on four hits. Fiers (12-6) struck out seven with just one walk. The right-hander improved to 5-0 in seven starts since the A’s acquired him in an August trade with the Detroit Tigers.
Reds 3, Dodgers 1
Brandon Dixon and Scott Schebler hit home runs against their former organization, and Luis Castillo pitched 6 1/3 strong innings as Cincinnati continued its winning streak against visiting Los Angeles.
The Reds, in last place in the NL Central, are now 6-0 against the Dodgers this season. They won all four games at Dodger Stadium in the first half and have won the first two games of the current three-game series. The Reds can make it a perfect 7-for-7 with a victory in the series finale Wednesday.
Dixon and Schebler were former Dodgers prospects until a trade before the 2016 season sent them to Cincinnati. Dixon’s home run in the second inning was his fifth of the season, while Schebler hit his 16th one inning later. Castillo (9-12) gave up one run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.
Marlins 5, Mets 3
Jacob deGrom continued to go unrewarded during a record-breaking season when the New York ace took the loss despite allowing just two runs over seven innings as the Mets fell to visiting Miami.
The Marlins, who hadn’t played since Saturday due to back-to-back rainouts, won for just the fourth time in 12 games. The Mets have won six of nine.
Slideshow (7 Images)
DeGrom (8-9) allowed three runs or fewer for the 26th straight start — the longest single-season streak in baseball history. Leslie “King” Cole had a string of 25 such starts for the Chicago Cubs in 1910. DeGrom gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out nine as his major-league-leading ERA rose from 1.68 to 1.71.
Nationals 3, Phillies 1 (Game 1)
Spencer Kieboom hit his first major league home run on the first pitch after losing a tooth, and batterymate Erick Fedde threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball, lifting Washington to a victory over host Philadelphia in the first game of a doubleheader.
Phillies right-hander Nick Pivetta (7-12) took a one-hit shutout into the fifth inning of a scoreless game before Kieboom walked to the plate with one out and spit out a tooth that had become dislodged shortly before entering the batter’s box. The catcher then belted the first pitch he saw for his first homer in 117 plate appearances.
Fedde (2-3) turned a 2-0 lead over to the Washington bullpen after limiting the Phillies to two hits in his 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out a career-high nine. The win was his first since June 29.
Nationals 7, Phillies 6 (Game 2, 10 innings)
Juan Soto produced a crushing blow to Philadelphia’s playoff hopes, smacking a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning that gave visiting Washington a sweep of the teams’ doubleheader.
Soto’s heroics came after each team had rallied from three-run deficits to produce a 6-6 tie, with the Nationals getting three in the top of the ninth to extend the game.
Soto, who walked and scored as part of the ninth-inning rally, homered twice, scored three times, had three hits and drove in four runs.
Angels 1, Rangers 0
Eight pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout in Los Angeles’ victory over Texas in Anaheim, Calif.
Jose Fernandez hit his first career major league homer in the second inning, providing the Angels all the offense they would need.
After the Angels’ first six pitchers threw seven hitless innings with three walks allowed, Blake Parker began the eighth inning and retired the first batter before Isiah Kiner-Falefa lined a 91 mph fastball into right field for the Rangers’ first hit of the night.
Padres 2, Mariners 1
Wil Myers doubled home the go-ahead run off Edwin Diaz with one out in the top of the ninth inning as visiting San Diego defeated Seattle.
The Padres have won all three games they’ve played against the Mariners in 2018 and will go for a season sweep Wednesday afternoon.
Hunter Renfroe led off the ninth with a line-drive single off Diaz (0-4) on an 0-2 pitch. Eric Hosmer then lined a single to left, sending Renfroe to second. After Diaz struck out Franmil Reyes, Myers doubled down the left field line, scoring pinch runner Travis Jankowski.
Royals 6, White Sox 3
Rookie Brad Keller gave up just one run in seven innings, and Hunter Dozier drove in two runs as host Kansas City knocked off Chicago.
Keller (8-6) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six. He retired 13 of the final 14 batters to face him in winning for the fourth time in his past five decisions.
Whit Merrifield collected two hits, two runs and two stolen bases for Kansas City.

New Post has been published on http://pba-live.com/pba-hits-p200m-target-thanks-to-late-windfall-from-ginebra-meralco-games-at-ph-arena/
PBA hits P200M target, thanks to late windfall from Ginebra-Meralco games at PH Arena
THE PBA tries to sustain its financial gains from the previous season as it vows to make the league more competitive in the upcoming season that opens with the Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
After earning P200 million in gate receipts in the 2015-16 season, the league reported that it saw a three-percent increase in sales in the recently concluded season.
“Yes, we are higher compared to last season,” PBA finance head Odessa Encarnacion said in the press launch on Wednesday. “Three percent higher than last season.”
The numbers reportedly didn’t look promising until the last Governors’ Cup Finals when the Ginebra-Meralco matchup drew a combined 144,173 fans in the last three games of the best-of-seven series at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
That late windfall was enough for the league to reach its target and breach the P200-million mark again.
With that, incoming league chairman Mon Fernandez is hoping to pick up from where the league left off by featuring more competitive games this season.
“Definitely, the biggest value of PBA is entertainment. As long as we make the match-ups competitive, this will make the PBA more valuable,” Fernandez said.
Asked if there are innovations for this season, Fernandez hinted of the league’s plans.
“There are a lot of plans, but we cannot reveal yet,” Fernandez said. “Definitely, what the board promises you is we will have a more exciting year and we’ll continue to delight the millions of fans of the PBA.
“We promise that with your support, we will continue to make the PBA very relevant to the Filipinos,” he added.

Ranking the MLB divisions from toughest to easiest
It’s a general fact of life in Major League Baseball that some teams simply have more difficult roads to the postseason than others do. In 2016, the American League East produced three playoff teams and a fourth with a record over .500, while the Chicago Cubs won the National League Central by 17.5 games and had competition from only one other team over the .500 mark. Being in a weak division can give you something of an easier pass to the postseason, while a tough, competitive group can really toughen you up and give you a harder road to October.
With that in mind, we’ve ranked MLB’s six divisions from toughest to easiest entering the 2017 season.
1) American League East
There may have been an exception or two, but in general, the AL East would top this list going back a decade. Once upon a time, this was just the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Yankees have fallen from grace slightly, but everyone else has risen. This is the only division in baseball in which every team in it has made at least one postseason appearance since the start of 2012.
In 2017, at least three, and probably four teams can dream of October. The Red Sox have made the moves to cement their stranglehold on the division by adding Chris Sale to the equation, and it’s not far-fetched to think David Price will be a bit more comfortable in his second year in Boston. Sure, they’ll miss David Ortiz, but they’ll still have enough offense to make the playoffs.
The Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees are in the picture, too. The Jays have lost players, but still have a powerful offense and improving pitching staff. The Orioles return many of the same players that won them 89 games in 2016. The Yankees can make noise if they get enough improvement from their younger players, too. Even the Rays are no pushovers; they’re likely the worst team in the division, but in other divisions, they could easily wind up a .500 team. Every game here will be a battle, and the winner will have earned it.
2) American League West
There’s a bit of depth to the AL West that makes it tougher than it looks on the surface. A big part of that is the fact that I’m expecting a better showing from the Houston Astros in 2017, who will push the Texas Rangers; the Seattle Mariners may be a bit overrated, but they remain a factor that could bother the top teams.
Remember, only two divisions had three teams with records above .500 — this one and the AL East.
The bottom of the division leaves a bit to desire, but even the Los Angeles Angels can offer Mike Trout. The Angels aren’t a good team, but as long as they have the best player in baseball on the roster, they can pose problems for anyone they play.
3) National League West
Home to the classic Dodgers-Giants rivalry, expect to see those two teams battling it out again for the division crown. Both are, at least in theory, good enough to contend for the World Series, which already makes this a division to watch. While these are probably the only two legitimate playoff contenders housed here, there are some interesting teams near the bottom, too.
The Colorado Rockies have made moves to improve, and even if we’re not talking playoffs yet, it’s easy to see them posing more of a challenge to their division rivals. The Arizona Diamondbacks will be healthier with A.J. Pollock back, and if a few players improve there — Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller come to mind — they can build on their 69 wins as well.
The San Diego Padres don’t exactly figure into the equation here, as they’re expecting to be among the worst teams in the league, if not the worst.
4) National League Central
The Chicago Cubs are here, and that’s enough to make anyone take notice. The rest of the division has fallen off significantly from where it was even two seasons ago.
The St. Louis Cardinals are trending in the wrong direction, as are the Pittsburgh Pirates. Neither is well-equipped to challenge Chicago for division supremacy, with the Pirates in particular having a player in their ranks who are at least a little bit disgruntled and disillusioned.
The other thing working against the NL Central is the fact that the bottom of the division is transparently in rebuilding mode. The Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds are works in progress, and they make no secret of it.
The NL Central is a very top-heavy division that stands a good chance of producing only one playoff team, just as it did in 2016. Of course, the division’s strength gets a slight boost when the top team is a World Series winner, as the Cubs were a season ago.
5) American League Central
The AL Central has long been one of baseball’s shallower divisions, and it remains hard to figure out in 2017.
The Cleveland Indians are the obvious standout here, and they’ve brought in Edwin Encarnacion to make themselves even stronger. Two teams beneath them are at least intriguing. The Detroit Tigers were in contention to the final day of the season in 2016, but their pitching staff needs to hold up and they’re ultimately a very top-heavy team whose best days may be behind them. The Kansas City Royals came back to earth, too, and they simply haven’t been able to make a lot of additions. To make matters worse, the tragic death of Yordano Ventura has unquestionably shaken the organization to the core. And while it’s a minor concern in comparison to the loss of a teammate, the reality is Ventura was a good pitcher, and replacing him won’t be easy.
The Minnesota Twins are the wildcard here. They were the worst team in baseball in 2016, and even now, it’s hard to figure out what to make of them. There’s a lot of young talent there that could theoretically improve. The Chicago White Sox, meanwhile, are in a full-scale rebuild; while their moves set them up fantastically for the future, 2017 won’t be a good year for them.
It’s hard to see anyone seriously challenging Cleveland anyway.
6) National League East
It seems hard to believe that a division which boasted two playoff teams in 2016 would be ranked the worst in baseball, but that’s what we have here.
The Washington Nationals and New York Mets are very good, and both could make it to October again. In fact, both could make some serious noise when the playoffs come around if they are able to get there.
So what’s the difference between this and the AL Central and other divisions? Get past those two and there is absolutely nothing.
The Miami Marlins are still reeling from Jose Fernandez’s tragic death and simply don’t have the talent to contend in 2017. The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies are both rebuilding.
Washington and New York will, more or less, be able to beat up on everyone else and do real battle when they face each other. There’s simply no depth in the NL East. The Mets and Nationals will be worth watching, but they won’t be challenged by anyone but each other.
