Emy.
Emily Rodriguez. How can i begin to describe the incredible human being she is. With her mentality and her heart , you could not guess her age. She is very independent and helpful and beautiful and just an all around kind person. She is the only child of immigrant parents who came to the US in hopes and dreams of providing a better life for themselves and their child. Emily was born and raised in Durham, NC and has been a blessing since then. From being born during an emergency c-section because the umbilical chord was choking her, she spent her first months of life at Duke Hospital where she stole the hearts of everyone who came across her. Helping at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from a very young age as well as attending their private middle school and being a altar server for five years, she is now in a youth church group named RESPETO, her faith in God is something unbreakable.
Emily is currently a senior at Riverside High School. Always taking the opportunity to further her education by taking honor classes as well as taking electives that are new to her such as foods or orchestra and chorus.
Emily has the purest heart. Helping the family in the humblest way, whether she helps babysitting or just by being a listening ear. Fun fact: Emily was the first person I came out to when I was 13, I am 21 now. She was only 10 at the moment and the very first thing she told me was “its okay, i still love you.” and those words will never leave my mind or heart. She made it so easy to be who I am and feel confident about it.
Emily is also the biggest Ellen fan! Watches every show, even the reruns, and records all of them! She shares Ellen’s tweets, posts, and videos with the family every chance she gets! She plays all of the Ellen games whenever the family gets together. Ellen is her number one inspiration and hopes to be at generous as she is.
Emily’s world was turn upside down when her father was arrested and taken to an immigration detention center, Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, to be exact. Her father was arrested in early April and the court date was extended over and over and over again. Besides having to worry about her fathers journey, her mother, my godmother, was diagnosed with a heart problem and would suffer many incidents at home where Emily would have to stop whatever it was she was doing and call 911 and assist her mom until the paramedics arrived to take her to the ER.
Being the only english speaking person at home and having to deal with the toll of having your father, the one who provided majority of the income, so far away from home and with the fear of him being deported as well as having your mother in and out of the hospital with her job pending since her heart condition was not allowing her to work, it is a lot for any 16 year old.
After eight months of lawyers and courts and traveling to Georgia to her dad, Emily’s father lost the case and was scheduled for deportation. Hearing this news and having to see Emy not have her father there for her 17th birthday or for her completion of Drivers Ed as well as receiving her permit or not present for thanksgiving and the holidays, was heart breaking.
My godmother had a successful surgery and started treatment for panic and anxiety attacks as well as regular appointments with her primary doctor. Emily also started therapy to talk about what was in her mind since we were afraid she would fall into depression because of all that was happening , especially after she suffered from an anxiety attack herself. But regardless everything that was occurring, she kept her faith strong and remained faithful to God and remained being that kind hearted soul.
With graduation coming up and college applications being sent, Emily wants to put a hold on her education because she wants to work and help her mom bring in income to pay the rent for their house as well as many many other bills. Emy is such an intelligent young lady wanting to attend UNC Chapel Hill or UNC Greensboro or Duke but being so selfless and wanting to help her mom and her family. I’ve spoken to her and told her that I want her to continue her education that her dad would want her to continue her education as well, that there are many scholarships and ways she can be given money to attend a university without having to worry about how she will be able to pay for her own tuition as well as having bills on her mind. Although having to stress out and stay up late some nights to finish her homework or to study for a test while at the hospital doesn’t seem ideal, she worked so hard to be able to receive A/B Honor Roll.
I am beyond proud of everything my cousin has accomplished and I would love for Ellen to see all the hard work she’s been doing and continues to do. Her father will not be here for her high school graduation in June and just the thought of that breaks my heart. But Emily keeps on smiling and always reminds me that “Everything happens for a reason and it is all a plan of God.” It is still crazy to me how she remains standing even on her worse days and how someone at that age not only had to be worried about her losing her dad but losing her mom as well. Please Ellen, help me continue her education, help me motivate her and reward her for everything she has done and for being one of the strongest soldiers I know.
