How were marriages amongst royals arranged?

Eheheh alright, giant royal post!

Asgore/Toriel: they were childhood sweethearts! Asgore was in line to take the throne through his family, and appointed toriel as his co-ruler after the crash despite their separation at the time. They’re soulbonded romantically, and caused quite a stir in undertale when they eloped way back

Winter/plum: neither were part of the family of the past underswap ruler, but were actually both princes competing for who gets the throne. They agreed to marry in order to win against a third rival and took the vow together when the last underswap ruler retired. The two did try to make the marriage work, but separated peacefully after the crash when there was no more reason to stay together. Both are still close friends and allies

King/summer: king was next in line, and he had wanted to marry summers younger sister, but the other goat monster was whisked away by another noble before king could properly court her. She was kind for an underfell monster, but a bit… simple. Summers family wanted their competent child on the throne and summer and king were trapped together in an unhappy marriage until they were able to get it annulled after the crash

Spring/tatters: spring was already a royal when tatters proposed to her. He was a general in the royal guard and her best choice among many suitors. He did love her, but it was only business to spring. After the crash, she demands a divorce as marriage contracts weren’t necessary to be a political power anymore. Tatters respected that and went through with it, but was sad when she still didn’t want to try for a real marriage. They both respect each other and respectfully keep their distance

Empress/ivory: they were forcibly married by their families to fulfill a requirement of the last ruler of fellswap gold. This made empress and ivory eligible to take the throne. Empress pulled a coup as soon as the royal vow was started taking it on her own and banishing ivory. He still had enough political pull by the crash though that he was elevated to an official status by then. They are VERY happily separated

Medusa/snapper: Medusa was already on the throne when she met snapper, a captain of the guard. Unlike spring and tatters, while their relationship was political at first, it eventually blossomed into a blazing romance. Snapper and Medusa have always shared the same goals, and that common ground made trusting the other easily. They’re still happily soulbonded

Eros/charity: Eros was the royal of underlust, and charity was his best friend/advisor. Eros is 100% asexual and charity is aromantic. Even if those weren’t a factor, the two see each other as siblings and would never consider the other as a possible romantic partner. Eros stepped down appointing charity as the lusts representative since she lives the culture better than he does. He represents the farm monsters these days

Satin/velvet: satin and velvet were an arranged marriage in lustswap as the previous ruler couldn’t decide between a candidate between two different factions of nobles. The two are both peaceful sorts, and so in order to keep themselves happy they mutually agreed to open the marriage, only acting as a couple in public. They still have this arrangement and are quite comfortable with it

Vamp/dutchess: they both claimed to have fallen madly in love when they first laid eyes on each other. Vamp was a rich uprising merchant, dutchess was a rich uprising merchant. Their union of passion brought about a money powerhouse and they climbed the social ladder together until both were appointed princes in lustfell, and took the throne together. Many say that their love for each other hasn’t waned one bit over the years

Zeus/hestia: they’re siblings! So while they are ruling partners, theres definitely no marriage lol

Venice/swan: they married to avoid arranged marriages, and to their shock, they were named the successors to the throne despite not trying for it lol. It all worked out in the end though and both the dancetale royals are very dedicated to their jobs. They did separate after the crash though. They’re best friends, not lovers. And they want to keep it that way

Scope/silk: scope may have been the royal, but the only love he had was for SCIENCE! Silk was his classmate way back and one of the few monsters who knew how to speak scopes “language”. Neither were ever together, but both work as a great team. No marriage there.

Founder/fey: the nomad royals were also childhood sweethearts, and were chosen as next in line as one of the more competent couples. They were only “leaders” for about a decade before the crash so while they’re on the older side, they’re quite inexperienced compared to the others

Poseidon/salacia: the seafell royals were originally a love match. Poseidon was already on the throne when he made his long time on and off lover Salacia his wife. Unfortunately Poseidon is a whore and had many other on and off lovers. In retaliation, Salacia did as well, and both royals have fathered a slew of illegitimate children, two with the same person even. They tried to make it work, but Salacia was done with Poseidon’s empty promises after the crash and broke the soulbond. It’s a big mess still.

Lulworth/lapis: the seatale royals married originally as Lulworth didn’t have much support as a new leader when he first took the throne. Lapis was from an important family and helped balance him out. They both kept it respectful and truly did try to make the marriage work, but when other royals after the crash started separating, they sat and talked it over, and decided they should too. It was for the best.

Seahorse/orca: seahorse and orca were both princes next in line for the throne. Their families wanted them to unite in a marriage contract. They gave their families the middle finger and took the royal vow together without any marriage needed. Both are still great friends to this day lol. The rest of the royals could learn a thing or two from them

Thunderstorm/snowfall: oh they’re another very bonded happy pair. Thunderstorm and snowfall were already married when thunderstorm was offered the title of royal after the crash. Their clan in birdtale was the largest so it made sense to pick someone from there. He took it, and appointed snowfall as his second as the one he trusts the most

Gallery/melody: while they were an arranged match, with gallery already being a royal at the time, they didn’t separate after the crash. Neither love the other, but they’re comfortable in their arrangement and see no need to change it

Hercules/nebula: like gallery and melody, they were arranged and while there was no romantic love, they worked well together. Nebula and Hercules both want a family someday so peacefully separated after the crash to open up the possibility of a romantic relationship with someone else some day

Saturn/Mars: like zeus and hestia, Saturn and mars are sister and brother, so no marriage lol

Delphyne/Fafnir: despite being a “tale” verse, Delphyne, the toriel, was ruler first before meeting Fafnir. He was a secretary for her, and they really tried to keep things professional, but they were just drawn to each other. The two married in secret, and came out to their clan in Draketale when they had their first child together. They’re still happily soulbonded

Cupid/valentine: in order to take the throne that she desperately wanted, Valentine married Cupid, the next in line. Cupid is such a pain in the *ss that every one was relieved that someone would put up with him. They are VERY happily separated now as valentines way of putting up with Cupid was being just as mean to him as he was to her.

Rhea/Tiras: Rhea was already leader of her au when she met tiras. And he was so pretty that she decided to keep him~ thankfully for every one involved, Tiras is more than a pretty face so he was able to be elevated as a royal himself after the crash. He’s quite dignified when he’s working on his own, but gets all flustered more like a consort when his lovely soulmate and fellow royal is in the room~

Devotion/desire: devotion always had desire as her second in command. They never married as devotion never wanted to play the marriage game that the nobles desired. She had her au in a chokehold so no one ever pressed. It’s quite tragic really as desire is madly in love with her.

Idun/tyr: the drakeswap royals are siblings, so no marriage there! They were picked as representatives because their clan in their AU was the most technologically advanced! They were more qualified than the other candidates by knowlege alone

Jigsaw/marionette: the bauble royals were coworkers in their old au. The bauble monsters were pretty scattered and uneducated at the time outside of crafts, so not a lot of candidates to pick from. These two stood out though. They make fun of the political marriages of the other royals by officially marrying and immediately breaking up so they can have legal joint custody of their pet cat

Titanic/ Olympia: Olympia was next in line to be royal through her family, and her father wanting to make sure she had the best match possible made a contest of strength for her suitors, wanting to keep the royal family strong. Titanic, who was her secret boyfriend at the time, entered and came in 7th. Not liking those results, Olympia beat up the rest of the suitors and declared him as first place. Her father wisely didn’t argue lol

Cheesecake/meringue: cheesecake and meringue are actually nephew and aunt! Cheesecakes father was the original first royal of the flavor monsters after the crash, but when the country stabilized, he retired realizing he’s just not cut out for the job. As the next prince in line, cheesecake was appointed making him the first prince to move up to royal in post-crash ebott! His auntie has been training him up these last few years. They’re a close team!

Gloom/fog: they’re twins! They came from the largest coven of the grimms and were agreed on as the representatives from a vote between all the other covens. No marriage obviously

Shakespeare Weekend

William Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice, is volume twenty-three of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. The play is believed to have been composed between 1596 and 1598, and is mentioned in Francis Meres's commonplace book in 1598. James Roberts, the printer for Shakespeare's theatre company, entered the play in the Register of the Stationers Company on July 22, 1598 and he printed the text as a quarto for the bookseller Thomas Heyes in 1600. This first edition's title page states that the play had already been acted "divers times" by the company. The Roberts/Heyes quarto became the basis of the text published in the 1623 First Folio, which adds a number of stage directions, mainly musical cues.

The LEC Merchant of Venice was illustrated with reproduced watercolors by the Greek-born French artist Rene Ben Sussan, who became a principal illustrator for LEC publications through the 1950s. In a description of the six illustrations he did for this edition, Ben Sussan writes:

The principal character in The Merchant of Venice is not Antonio, the merchant, but Shylock; therefore Shylock is portrayed on the frontispiece. . . . The plate in the first act shows the heinous figure of Shylock confronting Antonio, and Bassanio the image of perfect friendship. In the second act a merry scene of Venetian carnival and Jessica's elopement are depicted. The third illustration shows fair Portia, personifying all the beauty and intelligence of the Renaissance, and Bassanio about to choose a casket. The fourth shows the Court of Justice, the Duke surrounded by Magnificoes, Shylock and Portia in the tense contending moment of the trial. The last plate is an illustration of the garden in Belmont -- the night, the musicians, Jessica and Lorenzo express the romance, Launcelot the merriness of the epilogue.

The volumes in the set were printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish, and each was illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

She was happily married to her husband who she had known since her teenage years by encountering him late one night. Though they had many trials and tribulations throughout their time together, they grew close over the years and eventually eloped when Evelina emerged into her mid 20′s.  Her husband was part of an underground mafia, which made it strictly forbidden for the members to have any ties to those outside of the ring. Despite that risk, they remained together in secret until they were discovered about 5 years later. (She was never aware of her husband’s ties to a mafia yk.) To not risk compromising the activity within the syndicate with an outsider, they attempted to murder her. However, her husband protected her to allow her to escape, and unfortunately was killed in the fight. Fleeing from her home, and weighed down with grief, she needed somewhere to turn to. Being a now widowed woman with nowhere to go, she searched for a new career. And surprise surprise, she joined the WVBA a while after she came to New York in order to grow stronger. No one would be able to overpower her. No one would make her grieve again. As for her personality, she is generally reserved. She doesn’t speak to anyone, and doesn’t usually seem interested in speaking with others even when spoken to. Though she may seem cold, she can be helpful (like a mother) if she is truly needed. Basically, she’s not all that distant, and can be like a motherly figure when she does interact with the other girls. She’ll do simple things like help with their hair/makeup and with other tasks around the circuit. Never speaks but does somewhat care.

johanna barker is the daughter of a killer and a lunatic, raised by a vulture. she is the glue that holds the narrative together. a rapunzel-like figure, she has been abused by her guardian ever since she was adopted. things have only gotten worse, however, since she was twelve she has been restricted to the house. after an incident that happened when she was fourteen, she was forced to inside her room. however, like the fairytale girl, she is clever in finding a way to escape. at the heart of the story, johanna is a survivor. while others around her are doomed by the narrative, she is doomed to live. now, she is the wife of a sailor. happy now...at least, she's determined to be.

it is nearly impossible to talk to johanna while is under the care of the judge. only the select few members of staff, turpin and occasionally, bamford are allowed to speak to her. the girl is a mystery to others in upper-middle-class london. unless your muse is a maid or one of these others canonical characters ( or anthony! ), they will not be able to speak to her.

she is a shy girl. socializing was taught to her, not something she learned. fingers are often twirling around stray curls or she is biting her lower lip. her voice is soft and polite and her mannerisms seem to be concealed to herself. but her stubbornness is apparent. johanna isn't afraid to stick up for loved ones. she is passionate about certain things such as birds and is keen to go on tangents at the slightest mention. of course, this ramble will be followed up with an apology.

while she is now a housewife, johanna doesn't really know the first thing about running this sort of household with no staff and no external help. she cannot cook and has just learned how to clean properly.

physically, she holds a very obvious beauty. long yellow curls and a pale face. however, upon further inspection, it is also obvious that johanna is rather sickly. your muse will not notice all of the bruises or most of her scars, but she is often sleep-deprived and very skinny.

what they’ve been up to recently:

nine months in an insane asylum. after refusing to marry her guardian and him finding out about her plans to elope with anthony, she was sent to fogg's asylum for lunatic women where she spent a total of nine long months there. this included nearly two months in the most abusive ward and a stint in the infirmary following events that happened there.

becoming a wife. it took three weeks for them to receive their government paperwork in the mail. during this time, she and anthony stayed in an inn on the outskirts of town where he could still access the docks for work. johanna was paid to assist two sisters in their soap-selling stand in a marketplace. after they were married, they moved to plymouth and rent a cottage. she is adjusting to her new life and new freedom as well as trying to put her trauma behind her.

where to find them:

night walks. these are common as johanna suffers from intense nightmares/night terrors and insomnia. she often walks along the coast.

plymouth! this is where she lives, after all! most of her in-laws settle around or in town, as well. the cottage is a little ways out of main street, but she is a wife and has wifely business to attend to.

paris. this was her dream place to visit. once she and anthony have enough saved, they get to go for a few nights and she still finds it as magical as she dreamed.

venice. no offense to paris, but this may be her favorite place she's ever been. there's nothing like san marco's. what other place in the world offers a ton of pigeons that just land on you?

bath. one of her in-laws live here and anthony is a family man! their visits are few and far between, however, johanna adores the city.

members of staff at fogg's. maybe a nurse is more sympathetic. maybe a doctor whose a huge freaking jerk. a colleague of fogg himself who is studying. a reporter doing a story on how wonderful the conditions are. whether downright evil or slowly befriending johanna, i need this dynamic. this goes for both modern and historical backgrounds.

fellow sailor's wives. understand how scary it is to let your husband sail into the unknown. make blankets together. have little events and social gatherings. *also their sailor's!

in-laws. the hopes are a strong line...and a wide one. whether a cousin, you married into it, or they don't remember why you show up to family reunions, they will welcome you with open arms. johanna is still adjusting to this part of her new life. who knew families could be so loving?

the barkers/the averleys. speaking of family, benjamin and lucy had them too! canonically, she doesn't know any relatives but in modern verse, she is aware of them. reach out to johanna, try to make a connection, invite her to lucy's funeral, etc. i can't promise she'll try very hard back as she is Struggling, however, it does mean a lot to her.

single parent friends. or not single, but fellow parent friends! this is specifically for her single mother verse. she needs friends who understand what she's going through. let their kids have playdates and for the parents to sip tea together and have a chat.

everyone in hawkins. fellow teenagers in the church choir or enemies or teachers and all those in-between. does your muse figure out that she's pregnant before graduating and use it against her? or do they want to meet the baby? were they kinda friends in childhood? are they in the same class together? are you a librarian and have noticed that she's come in an awful lot lately? or even a friend that she makes once she escapes from hawkins? stress the girl out more or be a saving grace!

fellow victors. for t.hg verse! are you on your way to the capitol on your victory tour or are you a seasoned mentor whose seen it all? district four is a career district, what about her neighbors in victor's village?

good citizens of the capitol. turpin's old friends or acquaintances. the ones she's desperately trying to avoid whenever she's in the capitol but they always seem to find her. former and current stylists who've worked on her. there are plenty of people who congratulate her after she wins. plenty of people who are still in the capitol.

others in panem. fellow folks in district thirteen, fellow nurses in thirteen or patients in the med bay, mentees, fellow tributes, former neighbors in district four, friends of anthony in four, the few surviving descendants or those who are covey themselves ( this is part of johanna's ancestry ), people who knew benjamin and lucy, etc.

buy soap from her. when she's still near london and a few years post canon. johanna eventually learns how to make soap. she begins selling it shortly after as a sort of passion project.

need a sock mended? a ribbon adjusted? a button sewed back on your shirt? johanna loves to get out her needle and thread. she often repairs things for anthony's friends and other sailors passing through. depending on who you are, it might come at a coast, but always a reasonable one. she doesn't have all the time in the world!

one note: despite johanna's background in medicine, i'm not particularly interested in threads where your muse shows up to her needing medical care. she's not that kind of doctor. she works with children and what could be considered more "secretarial" things are a large part of her job. she isn't putting pressure on wounds and telling your muse not to die on her! unless of course, we've plotted something out beforehand or we are writing in her panem or g.rishaverse aus.
