Vivo recently launched the new Vivo X50 Series of smartphones. There was the Vivo X50 Pro which is a high-end flagship and the Vivo X50 which offers value for money while not skipping the most essential features. The camera is the USP of the all-new Vivo X50 and the phone surely performs on par expectations. The Vivo X50 base variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage is priced at ₹ 34,990, while the top variant with 8GB RAM & 256GB storage is priced at ₹ 37,990. I got the base variant with 8GB RAM & 128GB storage and I used it for like almost two weeks till now. Here’s my full review of Vivo X50.

The specs of the phone look impressive on paper, but do they really reflect on the performance of the phone in day to day life? Let’s find out.

Built & Design

Vivo X50 has a glass and metal body with glass on both the front and the back with an aluminum side rail. The phone is quite slim with a thickness of just 7.49mm. The corners maintain a subtle uniform curve. The Vivo X50 feels quite premium to hold and it’s not heavy.

On the front, the Vivo X50 has a 6.56 inch full HD AMOLED panel with 2.5D glass and a punch-hole camera. There’s an in-display fingerprint scanner. On the back, at the top left corner, there is the rectangular camera module that blends well with the overall footprint of the phone. The camera module houses four camera sensors along with an LED flash. On the right side rail there is the power button and volume rockers while on the left edge, there is the SIM card tray. The bottom of the phone houses the USB-C port for charging and data transfer, which is also used for connecting audio devices as there is no headphone jack. Along with the USB-C port, there is the speaker grille.

Display

As mentioned earlier, the Vivo X50 has a 6.56 inch full HD AMOLED panel with 2.5D glass. The display offers a resolution of 1080×2376. The screen-to-body ratio is impressive with 92.8% as there are very slim bezels around the display. The display offers DCI-P3 Color Gamut & HDR10 producing rich & accurate color and a wider dynamic range for video content. The display is bright and vibrant and the sunlight readability is good enough.

As it’s an AMOLED panel, you can be sure that the display will be consuming less power compared to an IPS LCD panel. The display has a refresh rate of 90Hz so that everything feels very smooth and I particularly enjoyed scrolling through Reddit and Twitter on this device. The touch response time is 180ms, so it helps in tasks like gaming. There is an in-display fingerprint scanner that is fast and accurate. Overall, I’m quite pleased with the display on the Vivo X50 with a high refresh rate.

Performance

On paper, the Vivo X50 specs don’t impress everyone, but everyone forgets that this phone is more focussed on photography. However, in real life, the performance is quite good for everyone. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 730G chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM. I used the phone mostly for tasks like browsing the web and social media, emails, streaming music, and video content, and some gaming. During regular tasks, there are no noticeable lags.

Multitasking works like a charm and there are no issues while switching between the already opened apps in the background. The RAM management is quite good with no aggressive behavior killing idle apps in the background. I also played games like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, 8 Ball Pool & Clash Royale. While you can easily get the best kind of performance in games like Clash Royale and 8 Ball Pool, in heavy games like PUBG Mobile or Call of Duty Mobile as well the gameplay experience was satisfactory. During heavy gaming sessions, the phone heats up just a little bit but the temperature range is within the comfort zone.

Camera

Vivo X50 is a camera-centric phone and I was already expecting a lot. Gladly the phone didn’t disappoint me at all. However, Vivo has made quite a different kind of lenses for its X50. There is a primary Sony IMX598 48-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.6 aperture. The primary sensor has got Optical Image Stabilization. Along with that, there are three more lenses- an 8-megapixel 120° ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture, a 13-megapixel portrait lens with f/2.48 aperture and a 5-megapixel 1.5cm super macro with f/2.48 aperture. The Vivo X50 offers a 2x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom.

The main camera captures sharp impressive shots in broad daylight. The colors are punchy, saturation levels, and the dynamic range is good. Even in low lighting conditions, the main camera with f/1.6 aperture managed to click some good pictures. The 8-megapixel wide-angle camera captures decent shots. There is a dedicated depth sensor and with it, I experimented a bit and tried to take some shots while the lens is covered and even without that bokeh lens the phone managed to pull off some nicely composed portraits. The macro lens works fine, but it could be a lot better if Vivo could add at least an 8-megapixel lens.

In terms of video, the phone is capable of recording videos at up to 4K at 30 fps and the output is awesome I would say. The combination of OIS and EIS makes it possible for anyone to record videos while holding the phone and walking, without degrading the video quality.

The Vivo X50 offers quite a few camera modes including extreme night vision for super low light photos. This mode helps a lot while taking shots under very low light. There are also a few night filters to enhance photos. There is also a Pro Sports Mode, assisted by Motion Auto Focus which offers quick exposure and shutter speed for taking shots of moving objects for some amazing shots. It’s quite hard to explain everything in writing so here are some camera samples for you. Look and judge yourself.

In terms of selfies, the Vivo X50 comes with a single 32-megapixel punch-hole camera with f/2.48 aperture. The selfie shooter clicks some nice sharp shots with a good amount of detail and the camera also works well in dim environments, making it a good contender against many other phones which offer a good rear camera setup but suck in terms of selfies.

Software

Vivo X50 runs Android 10 out of the box with Vivo’s own FunTouch OS 10 skin on top. FunTouch OS 10 is a blend of the old and new, as it retains some of the old, most-loved features while bringing a new fresh look and improving the user experience. The FunTouch OS 10 is much improved and packed with features.

The new FunTouch OS 10 brings performance improvements, quick sharing features, new system dynamics, and minimalistic design. The Vivo X50 also brings DocVault which uses the Government of India’s Digilocker platform as an authorized partner. It’s very useful for easily managing documents on the go.

There is the system-wide dark mode which reduces strain on the eyes and as Vivo X50 comes with an AMOLED display, the dark mode would also help save power. There is also the new Desktop Mode where the phone would switch to a desktop mode when you connect your phone to an external monitor. Along with these, there are other features like easier file sharing, new privacy-focused settings, multitasking via floating windows, and much more. The UI has improved a lot when we look back and the overall experience with the FunTouch OS on Vivo X50 has been really good.

Battery

The Vivo X50 packs a 4200mAh battery which seems to be quite good. The phone saves quite a bit of power if you use dark mode. However, if you normally use the phone without the dark mode, then also, you can get a full day usage easily and may need to plug it in by the end of the phone. I mostly charge my phone overnight but when I forgot to plug it in once, then also, by the time I wake up and leave home, I could easily get the phone charged up to 78% thanks to the ultra-fast 33W charging.

Final Verdict

Vivo X50 is a phone that you can rely on for video creation. The camera on the phone is really good, the device feels premium and due to the design, the phone quite reminds of Huawei. A high refresh rate AMOLED panel, solid battery, and stable performance, along with superfast 33W charging make the Vivo X50 phone quite a complete package for most users.

iPhone 11 Full Specs, Review And Price

The prominent changes from the iPhone XS are that the models feature a new triple-lens rear camera system and the new A13 Bionic chip. The iPhone 11 Pro is Apple's first iPhone to feature a "pro" designation, which was previously reserved for larger Apple products. The model is the first iPhone to include an 18W fast charger in the box and a Lightning to USB-C cable allowing connection to current Mac computers.

Design

The iPhone 11 Pro is available in Gold, Space Gray, Silver, and Midnight Green, a new color previously not available on iPhones.  Similar to the iPhone XS, there is a display cutout at the front that includes the 12MP TrueDepth camera system and speaker. There is also a new rear camera design with three cameras and a flash in a larger, square-shaped bump, which is the most visible difference compared to the iPhone XS. The Apple logo is now centered on the back of the device with no text, and the glass has a frosted matte finish, unlike the glossy finish found on the 8/8+, X, XR, XS/XS Max and 11.

Hardware

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max both have an A13 Bionic processor. Both phones have three internal storage options: 64 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB. They also both have 4 GB of RAM. Both models are rated IP68 water and dust resistant and are resistant for 30 minutes in a depth of 4 meters. The warranty does not cover any water damage to the phone. Also, like previous iPhones, both phones do not have a headphone jack and come with wired EarPods with a Lightning connector. The iPhone 11 Pro is the first iPhone to be sold with an 18-watt fast charger in the box as opposed to the 5-watt charger in the iPhone 10 and previous iPhones 

Display

The iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8 inch OLED display with a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels (458 ppi), while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 6.5 inch OLED display with a resolution of 2688x1242 pixels (458 ppi). Both models feature a Super Retina XDR Display with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a notch at the top for the TrueDepth camera system and speaker. Apple describes the display as having a "mini Apple Pro Display XDR" on a phone. They also have a True Tone and wide color display supporting HDR with 1200 nits of brightness. The screen has an oleophobic coating that is fingerprint-resistant. 

Camera

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max both include a triple-lens 12MP rear camera array. There is one f/2.4 ultra-wide-angle lens with a 120-degree field of view and 2x optical zoom out, one f/1.8 wide-angle lens, and one f/2.0 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom in. The iPhone 11 Pro supports 4K video up to 60 fps and 1080p slow motion at up to 240 fps. The phone also features an audio zoom feature which focuses audio on the area that is being zoomed in on. All of the cameras support video although only the wide and telephoto come with Optical Image Stabilization. It supports a Portrait Mode supporting depth control and an advanced bokeh effect. The phone also has an automatic Night Mode allowing the camera to take brighter pictures with reduced noise in low light environments. There is also a redesigned camera app that adds new features such as a scroll wheel for choosing between the different lenses and long-pressing the shutter button to take a video. Apple has also announced a new Deep Fusion feature which will take advantage of AI and machine learning for image processing. Both models also have a 12MP TrueDepth front camera with an f/2.0 aperture. There is a burst mode, image stabilization, HDR and a portrait mode with supporting an advanced bokeh effect. The frontal camera also supports stabilized 4K video recording up to 60fps. Apple has added slow-motion video recording to the front camera in 1080p at up to 120 fps, a feature which Apple refers to as "selfies". Similar to previous iPhone models, the TrueDepth system is also used for Face ID and Animoji. Media says iPhone 11 cameras open up possibilities for shooting that have not been on iPhone before, especially when it came to taking wide-angle portraits and improved portrait-mode shots.  The front and back camera can be used simultaneously, allowing the taking of two photos at the same time.

Software

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are initially shipped with the iOS 13 operating system. The phone also comes with Siri, Face ID (through the TrueDepth camera), Apple Pay, and supports Apple Card.

Weekly poll: is the OnePlus Nord a great phone or just overhyped?

The prices of OnePlus flagships have been rising year after year, so the company decided to add a mid-ranger to its roster – the OnePlus Nord. The phone brings many of the company’s trademark features while switching some things up to hit its €400/£380 price tag. It’s INR 28,000 in India and if you’re patient, you can get one for INR 25,000 in September.

Let’s get the chipset out of the way first, it’s a Snapdragon 765G. It doesn’t have the CPU or GPU computing power of the 800-series chips, but it does support 5G. That matters in some European countries and may matter elsewhere too, assuming more 5G networks sprout over the next 2-3 years.

That’s how long the phone will be supported – 2 years of OS updates (it starts with Android 10) and one more year of security patches. OnePlus phones typically get 3 years of OS updates, e.g. the OnePlus 5 and 5T from 2017 got Android 10 recently.

The company didn’t skimp on RAM and storage – the base version is configured with 8/128 GB and you can get 12/256 GB. That cheaper version for India we mentioned will be 6/64 GB and will launch exclusively on Amazon in September.

The screen is a 6.44” Fluid AMOLED panel with 90 Hz refresh rate and 1080p+ resolution. It’s basically a slightly smaller version of what the OnePlus 7T and 8 have. Well, except for the pill-shaped punch hole, OnePlus’ first dual selfie camera.

Comparing selfie cameras, the Nord wins over its siblings. The main front cam has a 32MP sensor (compared to 16MP on the OP8 and OP8 Pro) and there’s an 8MP 105° ultra wide camera next to it. The main cam can record 4K at 60 fps, while the others can’t even do it at 30 fps.

The 48MP camera on the back is essentially the same as the OP8 camera – 1/2.0” sensor, f/1.8 aperture and OIS + EIS. There’s no zoom module like on the 7T, instead the phone relies on the high res sensor to provide 12 MP 2x zoom shots.

The 8MP ultrawide camera is a downgrade, the OP8 has a 16MP sensor. Neither can focus at close distances (like on the 7T duo), so both phones have a dedicated macro cam with a measly 2 MP sensor. The 5MP depth sensor added to the Nord is technically an advantage over the OP8, but not a huge one.

OnePlus released the OxygenOS 10.5.1 update just after the phone itself, enabling 4K/60 fps video recording with the rear camera, matching the 8-series. You’ll have to wait for our review to find out if the S765G chipset leads to different image quality of EIS stability.

Finally, the Nord has a 4,115 mAh battery, only slightly smaller than the 4,300 mAh power cell inside the OP8. Both support Warp Charge 30T and both lack wireless charging.

So, there’s not much to separate the OnePlus Nord and the 8. Well, except for price, the 8 is still €700. Is that Snapdragon 865 really worth the €300? Before you answer, let’s have a brief peek at the non-OnePlus competition.

The Oppo Reno4 Pro 5G will launch in India on July 31. We still don’t know the price, but this one has a 6.55” 90 Hz AMOLED, the same S765G chipset, a 13 MP telephoto (2x) camera and 65 W fast charging. It uses ColorOS instead of OxygenOS, which some may consider a downside.

The Realme X50 5G (aka X50m) is similar too, except it trades the AMOLED for a 6.57” 120 Hz LCD. This one is already available in Europe, priced €350 for the 6/128 GB model. Again, Color OS instead of Oxygen.

The Motorola Moto G 5G is another S765G phone and costs €400 if you want the 6/128 GB model. It runs clean Android 10 (with My UX enhancements), displaying it on a 6.7” 90 Hz LCD. The camera department is very similar to the Nord, the battery is larger (5,000 mAh) but charges slower (20 W).

So, is the OnePlus Nord your first pick for a mid-range phone? Or did the company overhype it?

After month-long leaks and talks, OnePlus has unveiled the much-awaited OnePlus Nord today in a first-of-its-kind AR launch event. Along with the OnePlus Nord, we also have the OnePlus Buds true-wireless earphones. So here is all you need to know about the OnePlus Nord and OnePlus Buds.

OnePlus Nord: All You Need to Know

OnePlus Nord is the company’s very first mid-range phone in the last five years. And let us just start by how it looks. Well, if you will notice, it is very much like some of the pre-existing smartphones out there in terms of design. You have a vertical camera module at the back with the OnePlus logo in the middle.

Design and Build

There is a punch-hole cut out for the dual front cameras on top left of the screen. You have the alert slider on the right. OnePlus Nord has a 6.44-inch Full HD+ Fluid AMOLED display that has a 20:9 aspect ratio, a resolution of 2400X1080 pixels, and comes with a 90Hz refresh rate. It also has sRGB support and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

The build is all metal and glass, and the colors look really great. As it is a mid-range phone, OnePlus decided to not give wireless charging support on this one. You get two colors- Gray Onyx and Blue Marble

Hardware and Battery

The OnePlus Nord is powered by Snapdragon 765G and comes with 5G support. The Snapdragon 765G will be paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.0 storage. OnePlus will be using UFS 2.0 instead of UFS 3.0 for this one to cut some price.

One of the best parts of any OnePlus phone is the fluid software and yes you will be getting OxygenOS 10.5 based on Android 10 out-of-the-box.

To cut some price for this smartphone, OnePlus did not get any IP rating on this one but it should be able to handle some spills and light showers.

As Nord has 5G support and a high refresh rate, to power the phone it has a 4,115mAh battery that comes with Warp Charge 30T fast-charging support and a fast charger supplied in the box. The phone can charge from 0% to 70% in about 30 minutes via USB Type-C port at the bottom.

Cameras

Now let’s talk about the cameras, on the back, it has a vertically place quad-camera setup with a 48-megapixel(f/1.75) Sony IMX586 sensor that is present on the OnePlus 8 as well. So you get OIS and EIS for good video stability. Then you have an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens with 119-degree FOV, a 5-megapixel depth sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro sensor at the back.

You can capture videos with 4K resolution @30fps, you have Pro mode, RAW image capture and more.

Availability and Price

The OnePlus Nord will go on sale in India on August 4 via Amazon India, OnePlus.in, and offline partner stores. There will be three variants coming to India:

The 6GB + 64 GB variant will arrive in September as suggested by Amazon listing. OnePlus Nord is one of the best mid-range phones in a while. It seems that the company has worked on every aspect of the phone to make it one of the best in the price range.

OnePlus Buds: All You Need to Know

Along with smartphones, OnePlus is also working on its audio devices lately, and now along with the OnePlus Nord, they have also unveiled their first truly wireless earbuds called the OnePlus Buds.

Design

The OnePlus Buds come in a round-shaped case that seems to have a matte finish. You can see the battery indicator at the front and the device switch/pairing button on the back.

The earbuds have that very common half-in-ear design and these will give you kind of AirPods vibes if you look at them when someone is wearing them. The earbuds are very lightweight with each earbud weighing around 4.7 grams and the charging case weighing around 37 grams.

Sound and Battery

OnePlus Buds have 13.4mm dynamic drivers. Along with these, you get the Dolby Atmos, Bass Boost, and Dirac Audio Tuner support too. There are microphones on each earbud that will do the environmental noise cancellation and shall have a very clear voice calling.

The charging case will have 430mAh battery capacity and each earbud will have a 35mAh battery. OnePlus claims 7 hours of continuous playback on the earbuds and the case will be able to boost battery life for up to 30 hours.

OnePlus says that a charge of 10 minutes will be enough for the case to give 10 hours of playback. The case takes 80 minutes to fully charge the case and earbuds from 0%.

Connectivity and Controls

OnePlus buds connect over Bluetooth 5.0 and can operate within 10 meters of range. You also get the Google Fast Pair support, which means as soon as you will open the case of your OnePlus Buds, you will see the pop-up to pair the earbuds.

For mobile gamers, there is some good news, OnePlus Buds comes with Fnatic Mode support that can reduce latency up to 103ms so you will have better sync.

You also get customizable touch controls on the circular part on the earbuds. Double-tap to Play/Pause, long press to call Google Assistant, and some other stuff too.

Availability and Pricing

OnePlus Buds will be available in three colors- White, Gray, and Nord Blue. OnePlus Buds will be priced at INR 4,990 in India and will likely go on sale on August 4 according to Amazon listing. These earbuds will be available in Amazon, OnePlus.in, and Flipkart.

OnePlus will not be launching the OnePlus Nord in the US, but it will be launching the OnePlus Buds in the US for USD 79 in two colors- White and Gray. The Nord Blue is exclusive to India and Europe for now.
