Drabble #85

I asked @kitaychan a little while ago for drabble ideas & she wanted SicIre in the rain to flee her horrid weather. So what better setting than summer in Scotland for that?

"You did not pack for this, you did,” Harry half-asked, half-plainly stated as he stood in front of a big puddle that covered the entire path.

The rain drummed on the umbrella he held over himself and his lover, a gaudy Tartan thing that had sparked very intense discussion about the invention of tradition and the commodification of heritage. It surely was as sound an umbrella as any other.

“I packed for summer,” Michele replied. His arms tucked snugly, almost aggressively, into his elbows as his shoulders hunched his neck a little to support his grim stare for the water in front of him.

“Summer in Scotland, my love,” Harry replied. “You packed for an average of 20 degrees.”

“I now understand Patrick’s general disposition better,” Michele replied and Harry almost cackled.

“He’s quite a sunny man, for being from the North, but maybe that’s just that way in Ireland. Should have met Ben, I hope the devil still hasn’t heard he’s dead.”

Now Michele snorted, but Harry kept his grin. Michele lifted his head with the soft smile on his lips that made looking at him more fun than at the hillside in the distance or the city behind him.

“I can’t believe they dared to put this faux Greek temple ruin up here and remind me of much better places to be right now,” Michele said after he had looked in silence for a few moments at the National Monument.

“What, you’d rather look at the fake medieval reminder of the English overstaying their welcome?” Harry said and nodded towards the Nelson Monument with a grin.

Michele followed his look, but his smile turned into a frown on his forehead and confusion in his eyes after a few seconds. “In what way is it a reminder of the English?”

“It’s a Nelson monument,” Harry explained. “They’ve popped up all over the UK after the Battle of Trafalgar – Nelson’s Pillar is what the Spire in Dublin replaced, I think I’ve told you that before. Got blown up in 1966, by who, who knows?” Harry shrugged, the smile with the teeth showing as cheeky as a schoolboy as he shook his head. “And, speaking of Ben, there was also a Nelson’s Arch in County Cork, that one also got it in 1966. We don’t do that shit in Ireland.”

“Clearly,” Michele said.

The rain drummed on the umbrella, the only noise that reached of fellow parkgoers, huddled into their raincoats, was their steps on the wet earth.

“Alright, let’s get back to the MacAllisters,” Harry said and put an arm around Michele’s waist. “Hold fast, darl.”

“Harry, what’s your pla-“ Michele’s question ended in a surprised inhale of air as the other lifted him off the ground and waddled through the wet grass to the side of the puddle.

“There we go.” Harry put Michele down again. “And look, not a drop of puddlewater on you.”

Michele shook his head and smiled again, so softly, his eyes not on Harry to keep up the act. His heart didn’t hammer against his ribcage because of the surprise and it was wet enough in Scotland already, he’d save the melting over his dearest for later.
