Blog Post 7: Do individuals end up adjusting the level of capital they believe they could attain? Different structures in society seem to suggest differently (Jennie Lee)
In the reading, Webb brings up the concept of cultural fields and linked it to Bordieu’s idea of capital which she described as a social relation that may not be universally accepted. Webb suggested that capital authenticity could be dependent on the amount of power one has. She also noted that people with less power tended to adjust the level of capital they believe they could possibly attain through the process of reproduction as their class position creates a ‘practical’ limitation of sorts. Webb also brought up the concept of the habitus, which refer to the values and dispositions gained as a result of our cultural history that eventually help us see, and hence respond, to the world in certain ways.
I wanted to touch on her argument that people with less power had the tendency to believe that they are unable to attain certain levels of capital as their circumstances places a ‘practical’ limitation on them. She brought up a few ways in which reproduction could happen, one being misrecognition where individuals think that it is only natural for them to face symbolic violence, even though it disadvantages them in the competition for capital. I disagree because I believe that there are certain institutional structures in place that help to alleviate this problem. For example, our meritocratic system could be a testament to how there are structures in place in society that disregard existing amounts of capital accumulated by a one’s family and rewards solely based on hard work, suggesting that there is no limit to the amount of capital one can achieve due to their background.
However, I also do agree with Webb that agents adjusting their expectations with regard to the amount of capital they think they are likely to attain is still a very real phenomenon despite efforts to reduce it. This could be due to some other structures we have in place. For example, using the same context of Singapore’s education system, despite priding themselves on being meritocratic, there is also a rule that gives utmost priority admission to a primary school if the student is a Singapore Citizen living within 1km of the school. Based on Edupoll’s proprietory research, Nanyang Primary School, the top primary school in Singapore, is coincidentally located in Bukit Timah which has been popular with Singapore’s business and political elite for a long time. This suggests how families with larger amounts of financial resources are indeed in better positions to groom their children into accumulating greater amounts of capital later in life simply because their existing capital affords them certain privileges, such as the ability to provide their children with better school amenities.
In all, I find it hard to say for sure that if individuals really lower their expectations of capital gain as different structures in place seem to suggest contradictory stances. I feel that it boils down to what the individuals makes of the structures and the amount of emphasis they put into each. For example, if he or she believes greatly in the meritocratic system and that every school is a good school, this individual might not have lowered expectations for his or her ability to accumulate capital even if her family is not well-to-do.
