The last panel of each strip for their Arcanist in a Nutshell comics? Isolde seeing Kakania in the vulnerable moments in her Small Room, and Kakania (an aspiring psychiatrist) seeing Isolde (her last patient and the one who changed everything) during work. Both in front of a mirror, Kakania in clear and content weather as Isolde basks in light. (They both hope for the others presence in a way. Isolde wants to be with Kakania again who she sees as light, and Kakania wants clear weather with NO more rain and content skies with Isolde.) Kakaniaā€™s table has lost its light, but itā€™s completely straight. While Isoldeā€™s table is full of life, but her table is tilted (Notice how when you put them together, Kakania is covering up the way itā€™s tilted). Tea party etiquette dictates that the potā€™s spout is pointed towards the person who last poured the tea. Each of their tables are prepared for a guest.

[behind the scenes Isolde]
In her newest performance costume, Isolde enjoys a quiet tea with Miss Kakania.

it just fascinates me how kakania is a morally upstanding type of person, truly caring for society and wanting to improve it, leading to her complaints about it. she's not somebody who fits perfectly into contemporary society and has oftentimes defied it. whereas isolde is the type of person who just kind of ... adheres to her own moral compass, defining to herself what she considers to be the right thing to do and taking a course of action based on that. as a result, we get those moments where kakania complains about the injustices deeply rooted within society, striving to fix it, but isolde ends up taking it somewhat literally and going "i can get rid of these unpleasant things for you. that's what you want right? where do i start?" and going to extreme ends that not even kakania would go to. because isolde lacks the moral limitations that kakania has. but in isolde's mind, since it's in line with what kakania strives for, then surely it should be no problem, right?

Has anybody already said that Kakania is most likely based on Anna Freud, Sigmund Freud's daughter? Not only she's an avid defender of Freud's theories, but both were probably born around the same time (the plot takes place in 1914 and Kakania is 19 years old, the same age Anna was around that time). Also, Anna Freud never was with a man and lived together for decades with Dorothy Burlingham, another famous psychoanalist and the grand daughter of the founder of Tiffany & Co. Just another thing to consider.

On Isolde and Many Doors (and One Key)
Thinking about Isolde and how she feels like she is constantly trapped in a small cramped room full of 1 million doors. Each door represents a presence that haunts her, an identity that lives inside her that calls to her from beyond the grave, a new mask to dawn.
Tumblr media
If every person in the world were to have a room, most would have just one door, their own. But not Isolde.
Isolde feels like an empty vessel who is only there to serve as a point of entry for other people and their spirits. She has been forced to become so repressed by her environment, upbringing, and her nature as a medium that she finds it easy to forget herself. Her ā€œselfā€ is not someone she has ever been allowed to know.
The room grows increasingly smaller, claustrophobic and strangling her with pressure as the amount of doorways in it only increase, every new person she meets a new doorway she is plagued with, a new voyeur who has granted themselves full access to her life and her body. Something she is now willing to let them do. It is easier that way. Easier to let someone else command her vessel, something that never solely belonged to her to begin with. An escape from all the pressure, the expectations, the perfection demanded from her. It is something she should do. The duty of someone like her. Something to hide her wretched face from view, to give the people what they want, to uphold her familyā€™s legacy. A performance that was never allowed to end. Each new door lead right back to that.
Tumblr media
The only exception is Kakania. The only person Isolde believes has ever really seen her as more than a host for other identities or something to mold into shape, prop up as a set piece. A perfect lady. The star of Vienna. A tragic heroine. A dangerous hysteric witch. A curse manifested. The only one who was ever interested in finding Isoldeā€™s door and that door alone. When she is with Kakania, a new door does not appear in that ever shrinking empty room, although at first she expects it to. For the first time she meets someone and is not greeted with a new ghost to haunt her. Not a door. But a key. A key that Isolde knows can unlock her own door, even when she herself cannot find it.

Isolde's udimo being a nightingale with a rose on its chest reminds me of the story of The Nightingale and the Rose, and how much it parallels Isolde.
Tumblr media
The Nightingale stabbed its chest with thorn and sang to death so the Student could obtain a red rose and realize his dream with the girl he loved. But after being heartbroken, the Student abandoned the rose to focus on studying logic and philosophy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isolde as the Nightingale... Kakania as the Student... Manus and Heinrich as the Tree promising the red rose... the red rose symbolizing Kakania's dream... and Kakania abandoning/refusing Isolde's realization of her dream that has been twisted by Manus...
Do you. Do you see my vision
