I have been to the end of the rainbow and, yes, there is gold there. This is a painting of the place where the Rainbow River meets the Withlacoochee River. This is where cool, fresh, spring water connects to the slightly warmer tannic tinted waters flowing north. Limnologists call this a confluence. Locals call this Dunnellon, Florida. Look at it on Google Earth and you can see a slight change in color. Better still, ride in an aluminum canoe with your bare feet pressed against the floor and you will feel the temperature change as you leave one river and enter the other. Oh, and the gold? Just go there and look at God’s beautiful earth. You’ll feel it, you’ll see it, and you’ll be richer because of it. I painted this digitally using the Procreate app with the dry brush.

ENDURANCE ICON TREASURED MOMENTS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS 2024 WAHO TROPHY FOR USA
As the American registering authority for the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO), the Purebred Arabian Trust (PAT) is proud to announce that it has awarded the 2024 WAHO Trophy to the purebred Arabian mare and endurance racing icon, Treasured Moments. The fourteen-year-old mare by legendary race sire, DA Adios+ and out of Hidden Treasure, was bred by the Alan Kirshner and Deborah Mihaloff’s notable Cre Run Farm in Doswell, Virginia, and is proudly owned by Heather and Jeremy Reynolds of Dunnellon, Florida.
“Treasure,” as she is referred to in the barn, began her career in 2014 on the racetrack wearing the recognizable colors of Cre Run, one of the world’s most prominent breeding programs for Arabian racehorses. (Cre Run is the only program in the world to have bred a horse that has won three million-dollar races in the span of one calendar year, as an example.) Treasure ran seven times as a four-year-old, with one first and three seconds and earnings of $11,315.
In November 2014, she caught the professional eye of Heather and Jeremy Reynolds, avid endurance riders at the top levels of the sport, and Treasure exchanged her racetrack life for the world of endurance.
Since then, the celebrated pair have recorded over 3,000 competition miles and countless wins together, including two Tevis Cups, one Haggin Cup, and the 2021 Italian Championships, which marked the first time an American horse has won overseas since the 90s. Treasured Moments is also a recipient of the Robie Cup, a medallion that is issued to horses upon the completion of five Tevis Cups. The medallion’s equine figurehead is Wendell Robie’s mare, a paternal great grand dam to Treasured Moments.
Additionally, Jeremy and Treasure incorporated a new dynamic in 2023 – competing bridleless. In fact, the two won the 2023 Tevis Cup in an incredible 15 hours and 14 minutes, and they did it minus a bridle. It was a poignant image that spoke to their profound partnership.
The WAHO Trophy program was initiated in 2005. Each worldwide registering authority of WAHO is granted the ability to choose its respected trophy recipients. Trophies are not necessarily awarded annually and are given out at the discretion of each country. Requirements for trophy recipients include:
- The horse must be living, not deceased.
- The horse must be bred and still registered as a purebred Arabian in the country of its designated authority.
- The horse must have reached a significant level of achievement as deemed by its designated authority.
- The horse must, in some way, have achieved excellence as a breed ambassador or, in the case of older horses, achieved the same through its immediate progeny.
Only five WAHO Trophies have been awarded in the United States prior to Treasure Moments. One of those five recipients is her sire, Darley Horse of the Year, DA Adios+ – also bred by Cre Run Farm.
“We are so proud that Treasured Moments is being given this award,” said Deborah Mihaloff of Cre Run Farm. “Treasured Moments is only the sixth horse to receive this award in the United States. To think that one of the six is her sire, DA Adios+ (that we raised and raced) makes it extra special. Treasure could not have achieved the levels she did had it not been for her owner, rider, and partner, Jeremy Reynolds. They are truly one. She could not be loved more. And that is a breeder’s only wish.”
Bob Fauls, chairman of the Purebred Arabian Trust, concurs.
“The PAT is supportive of all disciplines associated with the purebred Arabian horse,” he said. “South America, the Middle East, Europe…. We’ve had the tremendous opportunity to travel the world and see endurance horses perform. Of all the disciplines, the Arabian horse is king in endurance, and yet it often receives so little recognition. Because of that, it was a great honor for us to be able to recognize this particular horse and its owners. Treasured Moments is one of the most recognizable endurance competitors in the world, both inside and outside the endurance community. The fact that she now joins her sire, DA Adios+, as one of the few recipients of the WAHO Trophy, makes it additionally sweet. The board of the Purebred Arabian Trust heartily extends its congratulations to Treasured Moments and her team from birth to present on this most deserving award.”
“Treasure never ceases to amaze us,” said Jeremy Reynolds. “The first time I met her, it was love at first sight. She loves competing. I feel honored to have such a horse in my life. I wish everyone could have an Arabian Treasure like her.”
Treasured Moments and Jeremy Reynolds were presented with the 2024 WAHO Trophy by Bob Fauls and PAT Vice President, Howard Pike, on January 7, 2024, at the Reynolds’ Florida home. The horse-and-rider pair continue to actively compete and are pointing their efforts to the 2024 FEI Endurance World Championship this September in Monpazier, France.

Zachary Snyder, Florida inmate U34139, born 1990, incarceration intake in 2012 at age 22, sentenced to life
Murder, Attempted Escape from Correctional Custody
Facing a possible death sentence if found guilty at trial, Zachary Lee Snyder pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Friday for killing a woman he called "Grandma."
Snyder, 22, was accused of murdering 66-year-old Doris Babcock at her Dunnellon home in November 2009. He agreed to a plea agreement with the State Attorney's Office in exchange for a life sentence. "Are you pleading guilty because you are in fact guilty of that charge?" Judge Hodges asked before accepting his plea.
Snyder nodded and said yes.
He also pleaded guilty to attempting to escape from his Marion County Jail cell in January 2011 and faces a five-year prison sentence on that charge. It will likely run concurrent with the life sentence.
On the night of Nov. 13, 2009, a sergeant with the Marion County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Babcock's home after her husband, Cecil Babcock, a long-haul truck driver, had tried to call his wife while he was on the road in Kentucky. After multiple failed attempts to reach her, the sergeant was sent to the Dunnellon home to check on the woman. Snyder answered the door.
"One thing that he (the sergeant) noticed were some pretty substantial cuts on the defendant's hands," said Assistant State Attorney Rock Hooker in court Friday, as he went over the factual basis for the murder charge.
Snyder reportedly told the sergeant he cut his hand while filleting a fish.
In previous testimony during a hearing, the sergeant said he noticed spots of blood on Snyder's jeans and other blood spots around the house. Pieces of the living room carpet were torn up and a portion of the bedroom carpet had been cut out.
After Babcock had taken him in, Snyder reportedly lived in the house on and off for five years and moved out on his own three weeks before the killing.
At the crime scene, Snyder turned over six of Babcock's credit cards when authorities asked him to empty his pockets and had the woman's car keys attached to his key ring.
Hooker said in court that authorities found a pair of boots at Snyder's residence with Babcock's blood on them. They also found three to-do lists that all started with "kill Mrs. D (Doris Babcock)."
The handwriting on those lists were analyzed and determined to be Snyder's, Hooker said.
Babcock's charred remains were found in a burn pit outside her home. A piece of her torso found confirmed that it was her body.
At the time of the incident, Snyder told authorities he was burning trash.
Experts determined from the remains that Babcock died as a result of several stab wounds to the chest and the death was ruled a homicide, Hooker said.
After spending some time in jail, Snyder asked to speak with a detective and then wrote a five-page letter confessing to the crime and later gave a videotaped confession to detectives.
Dressed in an all-red jail uniform, with his hair cut short, Snyder appeared calm and relaxed as the judge questioned him about his competency during the hearing.
Unlike previous appearances in court, he was less talkative and only said that his attorneys were going to provide him with the discovery documents in his case.
One of Snyder's attorneys said he pleaded to the charges nearly three years after the incident because he was concerned about Babcock's family sitting through a trial.
"His biggest concern was that he didn't want to put the family through a trial," said Steven Laurence, one of Snyder's defense attorneys.

‘I'll chop you in the neck’: Man accused of threatening neighbor again, with an axe this time, report says
DUNNELLON, Fla. – This case takes having a neighborly dispute to a new level. A man in Florida told police “he heard a loud banging noise coming from the front of his yard” and when he looked, he saw his neighbor had come “over to his property and threatened him with an axe.” That was on Sept. 15. It wasn’t all, and it was far from the first time, according to the arrest report. “Approximately…

Exploring Inverness Florida: Where Downtown Waterfront Parks Shine
A pair of limpkins balanced on a tree branch over a sparkling blue lake with edges laced in flowering yellow pond water lilies. Spanish moss hung in a softly swaying curtain around the long-legged birds. Around them, the sounds of cicadas joined in a heated chorus, and beneath them, an alga-encrusted cooter turtle paddled in the water. A pair of limpkins find a shady perch by Liberty Boardwalk Trail. Photo by Sally White All this nature exists only a short stroll away from the historic downtown of Inverness, Florida. Known as Citrus County’s ‘Small Town Done Right’, the City of Inverness coexists with green space and local parks that showcase this region’s outdoor beauty. Three of the City of Inverness waterfront parks, Cooter Pond, Wallace Brooks, and Liberty are located downtown on the Inverness throughfare of the 46-mile Withlacoochee State Trail. The Withlacoochee State Trail is Florida’s longest paved multi-use recreation trail, stretching from Citrus Springs near Dunnellon to Trilby in Pasco County. Three Amazing Waterfront Parks to Explore in Downtown Inverness Florida Cooter Pond Park The first Inverness waterfront park we explored is Cooter Pond Park. The cooter is a type of turtle and they are prolific here. Instagram gets littered with pictures of the boardwalk trail traversing the 25-acre pond in front of the local Citrus County Sherriff’s Office. With views of the dome of the historic courthouse in the view from behind, visitors can stroll along the boardwalk, built in the early 2000s, and see cooter turtles, bluegills, wading birds, and alligators. Flowering water hyacinths provide shade and refuge to aquatic life on the sunny Florida days at Cooter Pond Park. Photo by Sally White. Water hyacinths decorate the pond with clusters of purple flowers bursting among the green, their shady floating islands making the ideal refuge for fish on a hot sunny day. In the distance water spraying from a fountain makes the perfect pond centerpiece. A paddle launch at Old Mills Road invites the adventurous to launch their kayaks and canoes for a paddle through the pond, but many visitors prefer the .07-mile boardwalk hike. There is a shaded pavilion near the US Highway 41 South entrance, but otherwise, this is a full sun walk. The .07-mile boardwalk trail around Cooter Pond provides ample opportunities for viewing the local wildlife near downtown Inverness. Photo by Sally White A thick swathe of marsh and cattails separates the trail from the Sheriff’s office and helipad, but if you stop to look, you may spot wildlife among the cattails. Park near the Cooter Pond boardwalk entrance of this county park to enjoy this walk. This park is open from sunset until dusk and fishing is allowed. In the evenings the boardwalk is lit up with rainbow-colored lights making for a unique visual experience. Cooter Pond Park is located at 181 US Hwy 41 South in Inverness, Florida The 46-mile Withlacoochee State Trail cuts through the center of Wallace Brooks Park on Lake Hernando near Inverness' downtown. Photo by Sally White Wallace Brooks Park Wallace Brooks Park was named in 1968 in honor of Wallace Brooks, the oldest African-American citizen of that time and an industrious resident who worked for the Atlantic Coastline Railway of Inverness. It is one of the most relaxing Inverness waterfront parks to visit. With a boat ramp, boat house, and fitness training area, Wallace Brooks Park is an integral part of Inverness’ green space. Nestled along the curve of Lake Henderson, the 422-acre Citrus County lake and part of the Lake Tsala Apopka chain of lakes this local park features water activities. Boaters launch their boats and anglers cast their lines here in hopes of catching a prize-winning largemouth bass. Pit-stops on the Withlacoochee State Trail, the waterfront parks of downtown Inverness are bicycle friendly and there are ample bike stands to use while you are exploring the parks. Photo by Sally White. Wallace Brooks Park is only 6 minutes away from Cooter Pond Park, a short 0.3 hike or bike ride, although parking is available here. Restroom facilities are on-site as well. If the water calls you, take the Liberty Boardwalk Trail from Wallace Brooks Park to the adjacent Liberty Park. A shaded boardwalk path leads you along the edge of Lake Henderson and through a swamp of cypress trees. You can enjoy vista views of the lake, or take in the cypress knees and water lilies beneath the boardwalk shade. You may spot turtles and wading birds and even an alligator or two. Wallace Brooks Park is located at 321 E. Dampier Street in Inverness, Florida The scenic and shady Liberty Boardwalk Trail along Lake Henderson joins Wallace Brooks Park to Liberty Park. Photo by Sally White Liberty Park If you happen to have children with you, the call of laughter ringing in the air might make you leave that boardwalk trail to visit one of the coolest playgrounds around. The bright colors and Seussical-looking equipment of Liberty Park Rotary Centennial Playground can bring out envy in adults as their kids scoot down the chutes and climb up the ladders with a sense of wonder. Another of the six Inverness waterfront parks, Liberty Park has a more urban feel. Four-acre Liberty Park uses the beauty of Lake Henderson as a backdrop. With rolling greens inviting picnics and impromptu frisbee and football games with friends, this sunny environment invites all to simply relax. The Liberty Park Rotary Centennial Playground has got to be the coolest playground in the area. Photo by Sally White The annual Great American Cooter Festival (now called the Cooter Music Festival) has been held at Liberty Park since 2004. This year they’ll be cranking up the tunes October 4 - 6 to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Parking and restroom facilities are available at Liberty Park. Liberty Park is located at 268 N. Apopka Ave in Inverness, Florida. The Train Station, located by the Liberty Park Playground is the place to go for coffee, ice cream, and snacks while you're out enjoying the waterfront parks of Inverness. Photo by Sally Whtie The Train Station at the Depot District Exploring these three Inverness waterfront parks can make a person hungry or thirsty and when you didn't bring a picnic, head over to the Depot District for a snack and indoor fun at the Train Station. You can grab a coffee or ice cream and play a game of duck-pin bowling, ginormous connect-four, or corn hole at the centrally located Train Station behind the playground at Liberty Park. The newly renovated historic train station was originally built in 1892 as a stop for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The Train Station is located at 218 N. Apopka Ave in Inverness, Florida The Depot Covered Market The Depot Market holds bi-monthly farmer's market events on the first and third Saturdays of the month under the covered shade. Photo by Sally White If you follow social media about Inverness, you’ve probably seen pictures of the Saturday Farmer’s Market at the Depot. The Depot is literally steps away from Liberty Park Playground and adjacent to The Train Station. Stop by for fresh produce shopping at the covered Depot market on their farmer’s market on the first and third Saturdays of every month from 9 AM to 1 PM. On Saturday, September 14, 2024, there is a Citrus County Business Expo put on by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce. NatureCoaster helped sponsor the event and we will be there with free area maps and NatureCoaster stickers. The Depot is Located at 300 N. Apopka Ave in Inverness. It was about 20 years ago when Robin MacBlane and I first met singer and songwriter Jon Semmes, from Dunnellon. He and his Mom, Mim, came to the radio show for an interview. Yesterday we met Jon again for the first time since that interview. Jon offers Singing River Tours on a pontoon boat that travels on the Withlacoochee River and the Rainbow River. Robin, her Mom, Bev, and I went on that 90 minute river tour with a group from St. John Lutheran Church, and had a great time. Here is a painting of Jon singing a song about Florida. I painted this digitally using the Procreate app and a combination of the turpentine brush and the dry brush.
