A long (spoilers included) review of Dunki.
Because I think I should just write it all out.
Starts with classic Hirani flavour. A main character on a wheelchair plotting an escape. And they succeed. Mannu runs away to meet her lawyer to ask about her visa condition. The answer is negative but she's desperate to be back home now. So comes the names of Hardy, a guy who she hasn't met in 25 years now.
Cue Hardayal Singh Dhillon, in all his greys and old age cramps running a race and also winning it but well a call from Mannu, who cares about a damn race. He answers no I'm not coming to get you and she smiles saying 'kand' ho gaya hai. And how can the 'Banda' refuse.
This was the introduction of a tale so simple, yet so real. Why do people leave their homes? The homes even with the poverty still has the warmth and love. But what could be more glaring than poverty for unemployed youth. Sometimes it's heartbreaking love, a love so powerful that people decide to end themselves instead of trying to survive through. That's Sukhi and Jassi's subplot, which only propels Hardy to decide on the donkey route, a decision that'll change all their lives forever.
And so starts the dunki, shown very aesthetically if I might say the horrors and the dangers. But you know your leads survive so you hold on. They wade underwater, scared and tired. They hide in freezers, cold. They walk through the desert among skeletons and evilness. Mannu has a cathartic experience here. And you wonder what exactly is the point of going through all this trouble without any guarantee. But they manage to reach their destination.
And now awaits another horror. Immigrants are looked down upon. They aren't humans in the eye of the citizens and don't get the dignity to live like humans either. Toiling through odd jobs, sending fake pictures to assure their families and to give them a better life is their only cause now. But Hardy doesn't have any of that. He's there for Mannu, so he starts the point of going back. But necessity is larger than lives for some people.
So they get caught and the rest seek asylum but Hardy can't lie, won't lie that it was his country that's unsafe for him. So he's sent back.
Fascinatingly dark that deported people get to travel safely back to the places they tried so hard to escape. It's along the same line as punishing people attempting suicide. This helps no-one.
Anyway 25 years pass offscreen. We get to know in passing that the families back home are doing well enough but our 3 asylum seekers are not getting the visa to return home. But trust Hardy, he can do it.
And Hardy does, with a bit of cunning and so much old man charm, the old man does it for his Mannu. But Mannu is dying. And ah well. What beats a tragic love story.
What beats a movie with so much heart and love and pain underlying the humour and constant laughter.
You just end up sitting a bit longer in the theatre and hoping to gather your thoughts because there's so much and yet there's this numbness. Is it because you saw the best movie, maybe. There's no best movie as per me honestly. Is it because this topic is way too real but so far from your reality that it shocks you a bit more. Is it because you love the man frontlining these moving images and you can see no fault.
Honestly I don't even want to conclude. If I could I would like to hug Sukhi right after the phone call, and Hardy after the court and at the terrace. But I'm guessing Hardy will be fine. Wo sambhal lega apne ko. Mannu I hope you had happy moments, even if they were the bare minimum.
#dunki#long review or just me trying to explain to myself some stuff#who cares#Rajkumar Hirani#this might be his most honest film#srk#shah rukh khan#man keeps outdoing himself#tapsee pannu#my heart beats for Mannu#vicky kaushal#sukhi I just want to hug you#anil grover#that one scene of him crying in desperation#vikram kocher#dadi ki kasam khane ke baad bhi nahi sudhra ye

Biz Talk: The box office business of Fighter and Dunki indicates a BIG divide between Urban centres and Mass pockets
URBAN CENTRES VS MASS POCKETS: THE BIG DIVIDE… The BO response to Dunki [Dec 2023] and Fighter [Jan 2024] - both driven by star names, on and off screen - clearly indicates the big divide in film biz today.
The fault doesn’t lie with the moviegoing audience, but filmmakers / storytellers, who aren’t able to deliver content that strike a chord with audiences beyond metros… The disparity in film biz is for all to see, with urban centres embracing the films, but mass centres staying away from it.
Let’s face it, the outcome of Dunki as well as Fighter is underwhelming, despite the merits… The BO numbers should’ve been much, much better and while the makers will recover the investment thanks to non-theatrical avenues, even book profits, the industry needs to open its eyes to the fact that you need to make films for all-India audience, not restrict it to a handful of metros.
The participation of mass pockets in film biz is most vital for the well-being and sustainability in the long run… Even in the 1970s and 1980s, I distinctly remember, the mass circuits were major revenue generators and the contribution from these circuits would take the film to the winning post… Several films would fetch handsome prices for re-issue rights - even after 5/10 years of first release - since these films would attract repeat audience in theatres… Sadly, the repeat audience is missing today thanks to the stories we choose to narrate, which clearly alienates the mass circuits.
In the past, Pushpa [Hindi version] found takers, despite its presence on OTT… In the recent times, 12th Fail and Animal continue to attract footfalls in cinemas, despite the presence on OTT platforms… Additionally, the Nostalgia Film Festival - organised by YRF, showcasing popular titles like Dil To Pagal Hai, DDLJ, Darr, Mohabbatein, Veer Zaara and RNBDJ - is a huge success… There’s a strong message for filmmakers here.
The audience wants well-made, entertainment-driven content and it’s important that we hear them and cater to their demands, if the BO has to flourish.

Box Office: Dunki enters double digits, Salaar (Hindi) grows, over Rs. 20 crores come on the last day of 2023 :Bollywood Box Office — Bollywood Hungama
In a year that saw numerous all-time records been set, the last day saw satisfactory results come in. Over Rs. 20 crores were collected between Dunki and Salaar: Part 1 — Ceasefire (Hindi) on Sunday and given the fact that the year’s beginning wasn’t good at all with only Pathaan kicks-tarting the proceedings say deep down on 25 January with so many barren days before it, one can’t complain with the way 2023 has come to a close.
To think of it, both the films have seen a mixed response coming their way. Moreover, the clash has hurt both of them. Still, now they have got into a sustained mode though honestly, it has to be seen how the two run from here on right till 25 January when Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter arrives. Yet again, Siddharth Anand is the director and Deepika Padukone is the leading lady (after Pathaan), so the onus could well be falling on them to get big bucks coming at the box office.
Coming to what’s playing currently, Dunki gathered Rs. 10.80 crores more at the box office with family audiences getting back to theatres, especially at the urban centres and key multiplexes. That has pushed the total to Rs. 175.57 crores. The film should cross Rs. 200 crores between today and tomorrow. On the other hand, Salaar (Hindi) is running primarily on the strength of the masses in interiors and that’s what ensures that a near double digit score came in with Rs. 9.25 crores been collected. The Prabhas starrer now stands at Rs. 117.95 crores and while Rs. 140 crores would be crossed eventually, the race would be towards Rs. 150 crores lifetime total.
Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources

Public Reviews
Salaar's story is just right—not too complicated, not too simple. The movie's dark tone and impressive visuals capture the intense moments well. It's cool that they skipped random dance scenes; the story flows better. Prabhas did well, but it's not his best. The second half could be edited better, and Shruti Hasan's acting isn't great. The action scenes are the best part—very cool and memorable. Overall, Salaar is a solid 4-star film, especially if you like dark themes. One of the best action movies in 2023, directed by Prashanth Neel, is thrilling and full of energy with just a few flaws. The film beautifully portrays the strong friendship between Prabhas and Prithviraj. The action scenes are reminiscent of KGF, and the cinematography is excellent. Prashant Neel's unique style shines through, making it feel like a comeback for Prabhas. It's a powerful mix of action and emotions. Firstly, for those criticizing without watching, I've got one thing to say. Now, onto the story—it's gripping, with goosebumps every 10 minutes. The BGM is fantastic. Prabhas makes a strong comeback with his powerful presence. Prithvi Raj delivers his best. Shruti Hassan has a small role. Prashant Neel's direction defines violence. In conclusion, it's a masterclass deserving of 5/5!
Free Tickets Giveaway:
Nikhil Siddhartha is giving away 100 free tickets for the 1 am show at SriRamulu Theatre. A treat for die-hard fans of Prabhas.
Director's Insight:
Prashanth Neel shares his vision for Salaar, emphasizing its unique world, massive action, strong characters, and emotional storytelling. Get a glimpse into the director's creative journey. In a nutshell, Salaar is an action-packed treat with some drawbacks. If you love Prabhas or high-octane action, it's worth a watch this weekend. Is Salaar a sequel to KGF? No, Salaar is a standalone film, not a sequel to KGF. How is Prabhas's performance? Prabhas delivers a powerful performance, especially in action sequences. Is it suitable for family audiences? The abundance of violence might not be suitable for all family members. Why the A certificate? The film aimed for a U/A certificate, but rules changed, leading to an A certificate. How different is Salaar from other action films? Salaar offers a unique storyline and intense action, setting it apart from the usual action fare. Also checkout: Read the full article

Salaar Part 1: Ceasefire vs Dunki – Here's why the Telugu film may not screen at these theatre chains in the south

SHOCKING: Near House-Full shows of Hanuman replaced with that of Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram
Last month, the screen sharing issues over Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki and Prabhas-starrer Salaar became the talk of the town. Bollywood Hungama was the first to report the viral news that Salaar makers had decided to pull their film from PVR Inox and Miraj properties in the South after they accused the multiplex chains of ‘unfair trade practice’. A few hours later, thanks to the impact of the article, all parties renegotiated the deal. It was expected that show-sharing would take place. Alas, it didn’t happen. Instead, exhibitors were asked to play either of the two films. As a result, some opted for Dunki while others decided to play Salaar. However, what unfolded in the Telugu industry over the last few days is much more shocking than Salaar vs Dunki screen sharing fight.
On Monday, the exhibition sector across the country got a shock when the famous Prasads Multiplex, Hyderabad cancelled nearly sold-out shows of Hanuman and replaced them with that of Mahesh Babu-starrer Guntur Kaaram. The social media was abuzz with pictures of the famous theatre’s booking page. Earlier, Hanuman had 15 shows and later, the 1:00 pm, 1:30 pm and 7:50 pm shows of Hanuman were cancelled. Meanwhile, Guntur Kaaram was earlier playing in 7 shows. Later on, it got four more shows. A similar scenario was also reported in other centres in Telangana.
An exhibition source told us, “It’s unheard of to see a show, which is nearly house full, being replaced by shows of a film which is not doing as well. This is unacceptable and it would have been understandable if Guntur Kaaram had a huge demand too. However, it hasn’t performed as per expectations while shows of Hanuman are full everywhere. The demand for it is crazy and yet, it’s getting a raw deal.”
Another exhibition insider commented, “Theatres have the power to reduce or increase shows. But this happens as per the demand and supply usually. In an ideal scenario, Hanuman’s shows should have increased while that of Guntur Kaaram should have reduced since the latter is a crowd-puller. But in this scenario, the opposite has happened.”
On Saturday, January 13, a complaint was filed with the Telugu Film Producers Council (TFPC) by Hanuman’s makers alleging unfair theatre practices. TFPC released a statement stating that Mythri Movies Distributors LLP (the distributor) had made an agreement with some theatres in Telangana to screen Hanuman from January 12. But some theatres did not honour the agreement and failed to show the film. Hence, the distributor and producer, Niranjan Reddy, filed a complaint with the TFPC.
The statement remarked that “The theatres did not screen the movie Hanuman as per the agreement. The distributors and producers suffered huge losses. So these theatres must immediately start showing the movie Hanuman and bear the loss so far”. It also said that “Such moves affect the entire Telugu film industry which runs based on faith, morality and justice”.
Hanuman and Guntur Kaaram were not the only Telugu releases during the Sankranthi festival week. Venkatesh-starrer Saindhav released on January 13 while Nagarjuna-starrer Naa Saami Ranga arrived in cinemas on January 14. Hanuman, nevertheless, has emerged as the dark horse as it collected more than Rs. 50 crores in four days and is set for a huge run. Even in Hindi, it has performed beyond expectations.
Meanwhile, On Tuesday, January 16, Prasads Multiplex is playing just 6 shows of Hanuman while Guntur Kaaram has been provided with 8 shows. Interestingly, on Wednesday, January 17, the situation will be reversed as the modern mythological entertainer will have as many as 10 shows while the Trivikram-directorial has been allotted only 6 shows.
