When devastating wildfires swept through Southern California in January, 14-year-old Avery Colvert knew she had to do something. What she didn’t expect was for Meghan Markle and the Archewell Foundation to lend a helping hand in what Colvert says has turned her charity, Altadena Girls, from a temporary relief effort into a full-blown nonprofit organization.

When Avery's stepdad told her that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s foundation wanted to get involved, Colvert says she “just started to break down crying.”

“Meghan is so incredibly kind,” the Altadena Girls founder continues. “She was so excited to help.”

Colvert says she finds the claims “ridiculous.” “They’re like, ‘Oh she came in and she just dropped her stuff off and left. People weren’t there,” she shares, explaining that Meghan “came in with bags of clothing from her own closet” and “was there for multiple hours in a day.” The duchess even “got stylist training” so she could help girls choose outfits and accessories.

“For all the girls that were coming in, they got to be styled by Meghan Markle,” Colvert continues, noting that some clients “came in and just completely broke down” when they saw the duchess there.

The Archewell Foundation’s support ���has continued beyond just that day…They’ve continued to open lots of doors for us & make connections.” When it came to Altadena Girls’s new permanent space, which opened in Pasadena last week, Archewell even helped them “to secure the building.”

In celebration of International Day of the Girl, Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, visited Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara to engage with young girls about their experiences growing up in the digital age. She was joined by⁣ Larissa May (founder & executive director of Half the Story), and Dr. Stephanie J. Hull (CEO of Girls Inc). (10/2/24)

This visit coincided with the announcement of contributions from The Archewell Foundation, Pivotal Ventures, and the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation to support a partnership between Girls Inc. and #HalfTheStory, aimed at delivering essential digital wellness programming to girls in underserved communities across America.⁣

⁣Meghan Markle joined the girls for a screen-free afternoon of games, friendship bracelets, coloring, and some frank talk about social media. The Social Media U curriculum that Meghan helped test out last week with middle school–age kids was designed with the help of its teen advisory board. “We really wanted to make sure that the teens at “Half The Story” were able to give their input on the type of experience that we would create. Ultimately, we thought the best way to do that was to create a space of vulnerability,” May says, adding that it was even more powerful with the duchess in the room. “With Stephanie and Meghan, we talked about what it really means to grow up in this digital age.” ⁣

⁣“We did an activity where we talked through a bunch of scenarios, and Meghan talked about being one of the most bullied people in the world,” May tells Vanity Fair. “We had girls wave these little emoji signs and talk about how each one of these scenarios would have impacted them emotionally.”⁣

⁣Girls Inc. is a network of 75 organizations across the US and Canada, which reaches about 114,000 girls annually with their programming and leadership training.

She really was convinced she was a star When H and M left royal duties behind, I think Meghan really believed that they would soar above the real royals. She had seen the huge and welcoming crowds, and really thought that the welcome was because she (and maybe even H) were just so amazing! She had proof now that she really was as special as she had always thought! It was true, people would have adored her all of her life if they had only known who she was! Yeah, well.The point has been made before. She was benefiting from the popularity of the royal family, not her own allure. Her personality type will never believe that, and we are now seeing that played out over and over. Her behavior proves to me that she thinks as long as she can get photos, video, etc. of her being her own unique and irresistible self, she will make headlines, make waves, make men desire her and women wish they could BE her. She obviously still thinks there's a chance. I don't know what it will take for her to finally understand: Meghan, it was never YOU who inspired the adulation. You have removed the one and only thing that made you interesting. Royalty. Sadly, in the whole process, we have all found out the type of person that she is. It was really something that should have been kept hidden, it's so unappealing. We'd never have found out if she hadn't insisted on foisting herself upon the world with her grabbiness, self-important speeches, her me, me, me, look at me attitude.
