DuPont Cyrel to present tech solutions at Labelexpo Americas 2022

DuPont Cyrel will present the latest technologies and solutions, alongside hundreds of live demonstrations to improve label printing/converting and create new business goals, at Labelexpo Americas 2022, which will take place in Chicago from 13 to 14 September 2022.

“We consider the show a great opportunity to get closer to the label converters and reinforce our solutions for a more sustainable printing in flexo,” Tucker Norton, Cyrel general manager at DuPont, said.

At its Stand, DuPont will focus on high-performing innovative technologies to address label converters’ challenges to achieve their sustainability, productivity, and quality goals.

Cyrel Fast is a thermal platemaking system that consists of a thermal processor and a large variety of photopolymer printing plates for flexible packaging, labels, and other applications.

The system offers superior productivity and performance while helping to reduce processing cost, time, and environmental impact compared to the existing solvent method.

By eliminating the use of solvents, including water, from the platemaking process, the Cyrel system requires no drying time. The plates can be ready for print in under 45 minutes.

The system is an achievement of more than 20 years of continuous evolution and investment into this platform and has resulted in more than 1500 installations globally. And this year, they hit the 200th installation of its latest version, the Fast 2000 TD.

The recently launched Cyrel lightning plates technology received the 2022 FTA Technical Innovation Award.

The new plate family is optimized for UV-LED exposure units to fully use this system’s capabilities. The benefits of the plates include a further optimized match between access time and plate performance while not compromising the print quality.

Solutions for sustainability challenges

Recently, DuPont published the 2022 Sustainability Report that reinforces the company’s sustainability strategy: to help power its transformation as a premier multi-industrial company and to strengthen its portfolio to deliver long-term value creation.

Notable 2021 accomplishments highlighted in the 2022 report include -

* Achieved DE&I performance above benchmarks with 26% gender diversity and 34% ethnic diversity of DuPont senior leaders.

* Delivered strong safety performance in the top 25% of peer companies for Total Recordable Incident performance and Process Safety Tier 1 and 2 incident rates.

*Increased transparency by developing TCFD Index for climate risk assessment and reporting.

* Reduced waste in operations and along the value chain by diverting 1,230 metric tons of material from landfill and upcycling into higher-value applications resulting in a 52% increase over the prior year.

* Committed to investing $20 million in the Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s Black Economic Development Fund to incentivize economic activity and wealth-building opportunities for Black-led businesses.

* Partnered with ‘water.org’ to impact more than 100,000 lives in 2021 and improved drinking water access and quality for more than 5 million people through innovative municipal water treatment projects since 2019.

DuPont Artistri inks advantages digital printing for packaging

With a long history in technology and innovation, DuPont is the manufacturers and innovators for digital printing inks. The Artistri ink jet inks portfolio is printed worldwide in a variety of customer segments and applications ranging from textile printing (apparel, home furnishings, outdoor signage), commercial and packaging printing (such as books, corrugated board, and now packaging film) and, where the portfolio began, in home and office printers.

“The attractiveness of digital printing over analog print (offset, gravure and flexographic) is growing year after year with inks playing a strategic role in this process. Bernd explains that recently, DuPont has committed to bring the advantages of digital printing into package printing. With more than 45 years of experience in packaging through Cyrel solutions, DuPont is supporting customers in tag and label, corrugated board and flexible packaging on their transition from analog to digital printing. Above all, DuPont is committed to developing digital ink solutions to help the sustainable growth of packaging, including a full range of food compliant ink products for the various customer segments of packaging.

“Flexible packaging needs to deliver more short run orders with increasingly shorter production times, making the combination of digital printing with traditional systems an attractive solution”, Bernd adds. According to Bernd, bringing digital inkjet to this customer segment is not without major challenges. Converters look for high speed solutions on a wide range of substrates (PE, PET, OPP and other) with the appropriate drying rate critical to the quality and durability of the print. In addition, considerations of direct and reverse printing, the use of white ink, the application of very different finishing methods (lamination, cold seal and other methods), and primer considerations, all factor in to the challenges of a water-based ink jet solution.

DuPont’s belief is by combining its print technology experience (inks, dispersions, polymers, primers) with that of the other value chain participants, solutions will be developed and that the digital transition in flexible packaging will increase in the coming years.

Sustainability is a ‘must’

Another dimension that water-based inkjet inks brings to packaging printing is sustainability. Consumers, along with brand owners and retailers, are sensitive to the environmental impact of packaging. Brand owners and printers are focused on lowering the environmental footprint and improving the sustainability of their packaging solutions while keeping high level of printing quality and printing consistency. Aqueous pigment inks, such as the Artistri line of ink products, help provide a key component to address the sustainability demand of digital printing.

DuPont’s relationships along the value chain help with addressing the current and future customer demands and allows the application of product and process features developed from 30+ years of ink jet development. “We understand that success depends on the ability to work collaboratively across printing, including printing press manufacturers, drying technology manufacturers (hot air, IR, NIR), substrate producers, print head suppliers and pigment & chemical suppliers”, emphasizes Bernd.

DuPont Artistri inks are widely used in textiles today (home textile, apparel and garments) with a product range that includes both roll-to-roll and direct to garment (DTG) printing pigment inks. Aqueous pigment inks for textiles are delivering benefits to customers in terms of economics (no post process capital and investment/cost, reduced time to market), application (can be applied to all fabrics and have a better UV fastness than dye-based ink), and lower environmental impact (no or little water usage, lower power consumption and low chemical footprint).

Afflatus – a flexible packaging prepress house committed to sustainability

We first met Noida-headquartered Afflatus several years ago when it was a prepress house supplying high-quality gravure cylinders for the flexible packaging of the country’s leading brand owners. The company is the largest cylinder maker in India with plants in Noida, Chennai, Vapi, and Kolkata. It’s an organization that has always been in a growth mode while at the same time it seeks to achieve global standards in color management, automation, and sustainability.

When we wrote again about Afflatus in 2016 it was after it had installed the Think Labs robotic cylinder preparation and engraving system. The Think Labs FX2 is not only productive with its automation but a very high-quality engraving system for legible text in small sizes and high contrast in halftone images. At the same time, since it is capable of reducing cell depths to as little as 5 to 7 microns. It has achieved excellent results at cell depths of 12 microns with the benefit that the same color densities can be achieved using much less ink on the modern gravure presses running at 300 and 450 meters a minute and even higher. The sustainability of flexible packaging improves with the reduction of the ink layer by 20% and parallel reductions in the use of solvents and volatile organic compounds, while the curing or drying process requires less heat further lowering the carbon footprint of the entire process.

Afflatus enters flexo prepress

After our story about the FX2 robotic system, we wrote about Afflatus investing in its first flexo prepress system, the Esko CDI Crystal 5080 XPS imager just before the LabelExpo India event that took place in Greater Noida in 2018. This was purchased and installed not only with the full suite of Esko software but also with the fully automated DuPont Cyrel 3000 modular processing line. Only recently were we able to visit the Afflatus plant in Sector 68 in Noida where we saw what we can only describe as the most magnificent flexo prepress installation that we have ever seen.

Every aspect of the flexo prepress and plate making system is automated with cameras mounted within the DuPont 3000 processing line for visual monitoring on a giant monitor. The system with its highly automated Kongsberg table for cutting flexo plates is extremely productive and produces more than 120 photopolymer flexo plates daily.

Our conversations with Afflatus vice-president Arun Pandey are generally wide-ranging across technologies and industry concerns from sustainability to human resources and even the overly competitive pricing that has now come to the flexo plate market as well. While he says that flexo plate pricing could be better structured by the industry, it is clear that Pandey is looking quite far ahead in terms of global quality and sustainability issues for both gravure and flexo.

Automation, digital ERP, an app and AI are being put to use

Discussing the supply of cylinders and plates during the pandemic lockdowns and after, Pandey described in considerable detail the systems and infrastructure the company was able to put in place to combine work from home for skilled technicians in prepress with that of the strictly organized hands-on technicians who had to man or simply monitor the output devices and processing equipment. “The installation of the second Think Labs automated robotic system at the Noida plant, for cylinder prep and engraving and finishing certainly helped, as did the automated Esko and DuPont systems for flexo, as did many of our significant precautions and arrangements over the past 19 months. We were also fortunate to have a highly skilled and compact workforce,” he said.

Another achievement in the past couple of years is the integration of Afflatus’ production floor across its plants country-wide. Through its digital interface with all the production units there is better control on the consistency of the output and timely commitments to customers. This has been recently been taken a step further, with the company having its own app to keep clients and the management and production teams updated on every SKU’s status. The company has incorporated several innovations including chips embedded to identify and track and trace each cylinder. At our meeting, Pande explained his vision to take the automation concepts further by adding artificial intelligence to make the current system more productive and efficient.
