A few weeks ago we released Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett performing “Beat It” by Michael Jackson and it’s almost at 1 million views! To celebrate here’s another tune that I’m sure you’re gonna dig. “Jam” is the fourth single off Michael Jackson’s 1991 album Dangerous.
About Jonathan: Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett has recorded and/or toured with some of the greatest pop artists of our time, including Elton John, Janet Jackson, The Jacksons, Cameo, Lionel Richie, George Michael, Kenny G, Doug Miller, Peter Cetera, Bill Meyers, and Cirque du Soleil, besides guest appearing at popular television shows like The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, Saturday Night Live, and The Arsenio Hall Show.
Among his biggest musical feats, none come close to his extensive work with the all-time greatest pop artists of the last 100 years: Madonna and Michael Jackson. Jonathan toured extensively with Madonna and recorded drums for several of her albums, including “True Blue” and “Like A Prayer”. As for the king of pop himself, Jonathan was his drummer for The Destiny Tour, Triumph Tour, Victory Tour, 1988 Grammy Awards with Michael, HIStory Tour, Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration, This Is It, & Cirque’s Immortal World Tour.

Sarah Thawer: Exploring Indian Grooves On The Drums
youtube
Win A Free Snare Drum »
When it comes to percussion, Indian music relies heavily on the use of a varied array of hand drums. However, over the last several decades, many drummers have studied and discovered ways to bring the drum-set to Indian music by transforming the rhythms to work in the context of a full kit – and that’s exactly what Sarah Thawer will teach you in this lesson.
Don’t be daunted by the title! Sarah’s approach to playing Indian rhythms on the drums is very modern and digestible for the average drummer. Don’t forget to download the PDF sheet music so you can follow along!
Lesson Index: 0:00 – “Building” by Sarah Thawer 3:15 – Introduction 5:38 – Rhythm #1a 7:15 – Rhythm #1b 10:28 – Rhythm #2a 12:00 – Rhythm #2b 13:10 – Rhythm #3a 14:14 – Experimenting with sound sources (#4) 16:06 – Rhythm #5 17:52 – Rhythm #6 19:27 – Adding a stack to the Kherwa (#7) 21:34 – Kherwa Fill (#8) 24:02 – Garba Groove (#9) 26:02 – Dadra Groove (#10) 28:40 – 6/8 Groove (#11) 30:59 – “GAIA” by Kaz Rodriguez
About Sarah: Sarah Thawer has been making a name for herself since setting foot on stage to perform for the very first time when she was only 6 years old. A self-taught drummer at heart, Sarah has found great success by embracing the world of formal education, by studying jazz and world music at York University where she was the recipient of the Oscar Peterson Scholarship, the highest award given by the institution, in addition to graduating with the Summa Cum Laude distinction. All her accolades and work ethic have taken her to share a stage with world-class artists including AR Rahman, Ruth B, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, Del Hartley, and D’bi and the 333, just to name a few.

How To Tell A Good Drummer From A Bad Drummer
youtube
Win Mark Guiliana’s Signed Book & Album! »
To become a good drummer you have to go beyond your technical skills on the drum kit. If you only focus on playing the drum parts you want to play and/or the more technical ones, you’re doing it wrong. In this lesson, Brandon Khoo will teach you what your general thought process should be behind sculpting a great drum part for any song. This is what separates a novice drummer from a professional drummer.
And remember… This doesn’t mean to always keep things simple. If you think the music calls for you to chop out – go for it! Your number one goal should be to compliment the music while also leaving room for the other instruments when need be.
Click here to watch Brandon Khoo’s full Drumeo lesson on “Drum Fills That Make You Sound Musical”.

A Guide To Hi-Hat Fanning
youtube
Win A Free Yamaha Snare Drum »
Hi-hat fanning is a drum trick made famous by legendary drummers such as Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, and Jojo Mayer. It produces a unique sound and is a definite crowd-pleaser with it’s visual flare.
Reuben Spyker is here today to provide a thorough, step-by-step guide on how to get comfortable with hi-hat fanning and start working up to those top speeds. He’ll start with the basic stick grip, the general arms movements, how to apply basic rudiments, and other small variations for some drum fill ideas.
Side note: be careful. It’s pretty easy to whack your hand on your hats while practicing this trick. We are not responsible for any injuries or potential finger amputations.
If you’re digging this lesson, please leave Reuben a note in the comment section below the video! Reuben is one of the community managers here for Drumeo Edge. He’s such a talented drummer and a ton of fun to have on the team here.
If you’d like to keep tabs on him a bit more, be sure to check out his Instagram page here.
