Cutting Over

After replacing my Drobo with a Synology NAS, I learned that iMovie won't open movie libraries on NAS. That's annoying, but I understand that there's a lot involved in ensuring integrity of video edited over a wireless network. It makes sense for that to be considered a pro-level feature. I purchased Final Cut Pro when I got my Mac Studio. I'm now in the process of converting all of my iMovie libraries.

I first assumed that I would be able to open them directly in Final Cut, but it wouldn't do that. So, I figured I could import them into Final Cut, but that wasn't possible either. After a little Googling, I learned that you have to open the libraries in iMovie and select "Move to Final Cut Pro" from the File menu. This means that I have to copy every library from the NAS to my local drive, open it in iMovie, and send it to Final Cut, which creates a new library file on my local drive that I then copy back to my NAS. I have one library per year since 2003. Several of them are hundreds of GBs. I'm talking about many terabytes of data here. Even on my gigabit WiFi network, it can take over an hour to copy a single library.

Would it really have been so hard for Final Cut to just open and convert the libraries?

Long Live My Data

Last week, I gave a eulogy for my longtime companion Drobo. I had an empty, Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS923+ on my desk and a Drobo 5D containing over 16 TBs of data striped across five drives. I didn’t want to have to buy all new drives, so I had a puzzle on my hands.

I figured out that I didn’t actually have to move 16 TBs. A chunk of that was my Time Machine backup. I had close to 2 TBs of space available on my internal drive. And, I knew that I could remove two drives from the Drobo without losing data. I figured I’d start by copying as much off as I could to my internal drive first, then move the 10 TB drive into the DiskStation. This took several hours, but it gave me peace of mind to know that the Drobo shouldn’t have any trouble redistributing data across the remaining drives.

The DiskStation isn’t as easy to use as the Drobo. First, I had to attach the drive to a tray. That wasn’t difficult, but you could just slot a drive into the Drobo. Once the drive was attached to the tray, it slid right into the DiskStation. The Drobo is smart enough to just take whatever drive you slot in and make it available. On the DiskStation, I had to create a “Storage Pool”. Again, this wasn’t difficult, but I had to find my way through their robust, and therefor complicated, UI while following written instructions. It isn’t an intuitive product.

Once I had the storage pool set up, I was able to connect to it from the OS and mount it as a remote drive. Then I started copying data to it. Over the course of a few days, I was able to copy all of my data from the Drobo to the 10 TB drive in the DiskStation. I ended up moving my Photos library, a little over 800 MBs, to my internal drive, as Photos won’t do iCloud syncing from a NAS.

When the Drobo was empty, I ejected the remaining drives and moved all but the 2 TB drive into the DiskStation. I understood that I had to add them to my Storage Pool, but it wasn’t providing the option for that. After hunting through Synology’s documentation and doing some Googling, I found that the DiskStation isn’t as flexible as a Drobo. You can use drives of varying sizes, but the order in which you add them matters. When adding a new drive to an existing Storage Pool, it has to be the same size or larger than the largest drive in the pool. This was not explained in the instructions I read for initial setup. Unfortunately, I started with my largest drive.

I’ve created a second Storage Pool with the 8 TB drive and two 4 TB drives. I should be able to copy everything from the 10 TB drive onto those and then add the 10 TB drive to the second Storage Pool. That will be several more hours of work, but then I’ll have data redundancy again, protecting against drive failure.
